We haven’t been keeping up with this. A few of us were sick and a few of us were lazy.

- The Pens beat Montreal on Wednesday night, 3-1.

- Jeff Jimmerson was exceptional while singing Oh Canada.

- Sid (1G-1A), Billy G, and Gonch all scored for the Pens.

- Talbot got his first point of the season with an assist on Sid’s goal.

- It was surprising how few penalties there were with how physical the Pens and Canadiens played.

- The Pens fell to the Islanders yesterday, 3-2.

- Brentson was in net for the Pens; Malkin and Cooke had the Pens’ goals; Engelland and Staal both got in fights.

- The Pens could’ve got more shots than 21, for sure.

How are those for recaps?

The Pens are playing the Rangers tonight at Mellon Arena.

- The most important news is that Engelland and Lovejoy have been reassigned to Wilkes-barre to make room for Goligoski and Letang’s return. Goligoski has been out with a lower body injury since 11/14, and Letang has been out with a shoulder contusion since 11/7. McKee is now our only starting defensemen still sidelined with injury (finger infection); he is hopeful to return Monday or Thursday. (Penguins Getting Healthy Heading Into December)

- I’m going to keep my eye on Gaborik (19+14=33) tonight. He’s second in scoring so far this season, trailing Joe Thornton. Coach Dan has talked about using Staal and Cooke to try to settle Gaborik. (Pens Report 11/28/09)

- TK is expected to return in the near future, but still no word on Kunitz’s lower body injury.

Injuries are, of course, a part of any hockey season. Dealing with guys on your roster listed as day to day or on the injured reserve are a part of the fantasy owner’s life. More often than one likes to consider, one finds oneself scrambling through the list of available players trying to find a replacement for a guy who just went on the IR. Worse yet, the guy one loses is usually someone who was doing quite well for you.

The compressed NHL schedule for the 2010 olympics in Vancouver has certainly taken its tole over the first quarter of the season. I have had to deal with more than a few of my guys being listed as DTD. I’ve been lucky in that Ryan Smyth has been the first guy during the season that has been listed as on the IR (Marian Hossa was on the IR coming into the season, but is expected to play tonight in San Jose). So, I basically gain Hossa back, but swapped him for Smyth on the IR. Smyth had 23 points in the first 22 games and had been one of the guys who consistently was getting me points. Although I could have just stayed with what I had, I chose to drop Bryan Little and pick up Kyle Okposo of the Islanders. I think Little will come around for the Thrashers, but with the injury bug seeming to become more common, I need production every week.

According to Yahoo, they have some 88 players listed as injured. This includes names like, Vesa Toskala of the Maple Leafs, Niklas Cronwell of the Redwings, Dainius Zubrus of the Devils, Cory Stillman of the Panthers, Rene Bourque of the Flames, Alexander Semin of the Capitals, Ryan Smyth of the Kings, Jay McKee of the Penguins, Fernando Pisani of the Oilers, Devin Setoguchi of the Sharks, Mike Knoble of the Capitals, Chris Kunitz of the Penguins, Brian Gionta of the Canadians, and several others. The “damage” to fantasy owners is surely diverse and painful. The rough part is that it is most likely going to continue. Even as the NHL will shut down during the olympic break in February, those players honored enough to represent their respective countries will have a rather grueling tournament over that span. Consequently, as a fantasy owner, I think every week is going to be an adventure this season.

I think the debate has been made over the adjustment the league makes to accommodate the olympics. It is great for the NHL to have their talent on showcase in front of the world. This cannot be argued at all. However, the question remains how “fair” this is to the players themselves. You see teams playing a number of games over a brief period of time, like 6 games in 9 nights, as the Isles are in the midst of facing this week. It is really no surprise that we are seeing guys going down to injuries with this kind of pace. The game of hockey is physical and tough enough, but when you compress a schedule, it only increases the chances of guys getting hurt because of the general wear and tear. However, this is how it is, and we, as fantasy owners, just have to deal with it and make the best of it.

Grabovski & co. let another one get away

Can we just throw in the towel already? Seriously, wouldn’t the world of sports be so much better off without Toronto’s crew of embarrassing franchises? The Leafs carried the torch tonight at the ACC, managing to lose 4-3 to the Islanders in overtime despite out-shooting them 61-21.

The Leafs battled back from a 3-0 deficit, clawing away after Vesa Toskala left with an “injury” late in the second period after giving up goals on three consecutive shots. The Monster faced six shots the rest of the way, coughing up the winner to Josh Bailey in overtime after a turnover gave the Islanders an easy give-and-go right on the doorstep.

Phil Kessel, Wayne Primeau and Niklas Hagman all scored for the Leafs, with Hagman’s tying things midway through the third. Kessel had 12 of Toronto’s 61 shots, but had his best scoring change (well, I guess his second-best, since he potted the best) deflected from about a foot out a minute or so before Bailey’s winner.

Of course, the NHL’s ridiculous points system will reward the Leafs for again losing in overtime, the seventh time Toronto has picked up a dirty point in 22 games this season. At 4-11-7 and tied for last in the league, the Leafs are in Tampa Bay to face the Lightning Wednesday.

It wasn’t a spectacular fantasy week, but Da Dummboyz beat the Moose Men 9-3-2 and moved back into 2nd place. The Skullchuckas are still on top of the league with 133 points, while Da Dummboyz have 112 points. Behind me, the Hanson Brothers have 107 points, and the Lamp Lighters and Butt Scratchers are tied at 105 points. The Puckhoggs are at 101 points, Brewer Sucks! have 97 points, the Moose men sit at 88 points, the Normans have 85 points and, in last, the Wild Vikings total 59 points to round out the standings at this stage.

The only categories I lost were assists 17-14, PIM 28-24, and PPP 11-9, while we tied with 1 short-handed point and 0 shut outs. Tuomo Ruutu and Jay Bouwmeester had 4 assists (Ruutu having all 4 in a single game), while Jonathan Toews had 2 goals and 2 assists. Kris Versteeg had a 3 goal week with 2 coming against the Flames in the same game. Tomas Plekanec had 1 goal and 4 assists, and, Olli Jokinen, Mikko Koivu, and Scott Neidermayer had a goal and 2 assists, to lead the way for the Moose Men. Fortunately for me, Alex Ovechkin’s return this week only had him score a single goal. Other than the shut out category, I, at least, rebounded with some good goaltending, even as I had Luongo and Anderson matched up against one another a few nights ago and Vancouver got 5 passed Anderson to beat the Avalanche 5-2.
As for the Islanders, back to back losses in Minnesota and Saint Louis on Friday and Saturday evenings put the skids a bit on their seven game road trip. A bad mental mistake by the defense at the end of the game cost them against the Wild with just about a minute left in the 3rd period. The offense has seemed to stall a bit. One more game in Toronto tonight and they are home again to face the Flyers on Wednesday evening.

So, Da Dummboyz are matched up against Brewer Sucks! this week. We shall see if we can pick up ground on Don.

So as I feared. The weekend, indeed, spelled disaster for Da Dummboyz. No offense from the boys and my goaltending did not recover from the Raycroft experiment nor Mason’s pounding from the Redwings. Thus, in the end, the final matchup loss was 8-3-3 and a drop from 2nd place into 3rd.

In the standings, the Skullchuckas are, obviously, still on top now with 112 points. The Butt Scratchers now are in 2nd with 96 points, and then Da Dummboyz have 92 points (40-32-12). The Puckhoggs and Lamp Lighters are tied with 89 points, Hanson Brothers have 86 points, the Moose Men are at 80 points, Brewer Sucks! sit at 77 points, the Normans come in at 67 points, and the Wild Vikings are in last totaling 52 points.

Brad Boyes topped the offense with 2 goals and 3 assists for the week, while Travis Zajac had 5 assists, Jonathan Toews had a goal and 3 assists, and Evgeni Malkin returned Saturday to have a 3 assist evening. Ryan Smyth had a goal and 2 assists, and Dan Boyle topped the back liners with 1 goal and 3 assists. Besides Corey Perry having a 2 goal and 2 assist week for Don, ironically, John Tavares of the Islanders killed me with 3 goals and 2 assists. The only categories Da Dummboyz took were assists (24-16), game winning goals (1-0), and games started for goaltenders (6-4). We tied with 8 goals, 10 power play points and 0 shut outs, while my other goaltending stats were a disaster.

The Islanders played 3 of their first 7 games on their current road trip, winning against the Hurricanes on Friday, but losing in overtime to the Caps on Wednesday and then losing in a shoot out to Florida Saturday evening. However, it’s still 4 out of a possible 6 points. They won last night against the Bruins to actually make that 6 out of 8 possible points. Tavares continues to impress, while the surprise, Matt Moulson, who Da Dummboyz picked up on Sunday (Andrei Kostitsyn was dropped), scored 2 goals last night to raise his total to 10 for the season. Trent Hunter returned to the lineup on the road trip and has a goal in each of the last 3 games. As an NHL note of interest, the Hurricanes, after losing to the Islanders in overtime on Friday thanks to a Kyle Okposo goal, snapped their 14 game losing streak on Sunday by beating the Minnesota Wild 5-4.

This week, Da Dummboyz are facing the Moose Men. At the moment, I’m down 12-2. However, of course, it’s only Tuesday ….

My computer committed suicide and is on the DL for 2-3 days but I'm 99.437% sure I'll be posting a game story tonight. I should have my computer back by the Bruins next game minus 3000+ iTunes songs (including Nutty).

The Bruins (8-7-4) will look to rebound against the Islanders (7-6-7) from a devastating 6-5 OT loss against the Penguins in which they let in the game-tying goal with .4 seconds left in regulation, and coughed up an easy overtime goal.

The Bruins are riding a two game losing streak, but both losses have been polar opposites. The Bruins dropped a 1-0 game in the shootout against Florida on Thursday despite putting 40 shots on net and Thomas posting 23 saves in a stellar effort.  The Bruins game on Saturday night was an old fashion shootout that saw the Bruins lose 6-5 in overtime.  The teams traded goals all night and the Bruins looked like the sure victors until a Bill Guerin shot beat Tim Thomas just before time expired.  Thomas then coughed up the puck behind the net and allowed an easy walk-off win for the Pens.

The Isles are 2-0-2 in their last four games but have had a nasty habit of squandering leads during that stretch.  Despite holding leads in their last three games, the Isles have let their opponent back in the game and have extended each game to overtime.

Some stats that stick out.

The Bruins have 11 goals in their last eight games, including Saturday’s five goal losing effort.  Before that game, they  put up six goals in seven games.

John Tavares leads all rookies with 8 goals and 18 points (3G 4A in last 4 games) leading the Isles to 21 points (the Bruins only have 20 points).

No new injury news for the Bruins and Lucic was skating once again today.

The Islanders injuries are:

C Doug Weight who is out 4-6 weeks with an upper body injury.

D Radek Martinek is out for the season with a torn ACL.

G Rick Dipietro hasn’t played in 11 months, and won’t for at least a few more weeks.  Good signing Isles.

The starting goalies are Tuukka Rask and Martin Biron.

No surpise we’ll see Tuukka after Saturday night.  As much as Thomas probably wants to get back out there and redeem himself after some bad miscues, the no-brainer is to start ‘Cool Hand Tuukk’. Marty Biron still has the capabilities to steal a game despite starting the year at 2-5-2 as evdidenced by his .913% and 2.83 GAA.
