<title><![CDATA[International Standard ISO26000: Guidance on Social Responsibility]]></title>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>The purpose of this blog is to start a discussion about the International Standard ‘Guidance on Social Responsibility’ (ISO 26000) which is currently being drafted.</p>
<p>The ISO established a multi-stakeholder working group in 2005 to develop ISO 26000. The multi-stakeholder approach involves experts from more than 90 countries and 40 regional organisations, representing different stakeholder groups, including consumers, government, industry, labour, and NGOs.  The Standard is due to be published in late 2010 (at the earliest), and a draft version of the Standard has been circulated for comment.</p>
<p>The stated aim of ISO 26000 is to occupy the middle ground on the social responsibility continuum between legislated controls on one end, and complete freedom for organisations at the other end.  The Standard will attempt to provide “common guidance on concepts, definitions and methods of evaluation” whilst still enabling flexibility.</p>
<p><strong>Key points</strong></p>
<p>Importantly, ISO 26000 is a voluntary standard. It is <strong>not</strong> a management system standard (unlike ISO 9001 and ISO 14001) and we understand that it will<strong> not</strong> be a certification standard.</p>
<p>Seven core subjects are outlined in the Standard to assist an organisation to define the scope of SR, identify relevant issues, and set priorities. These subjects are:</p>
<ul>
<li>Organisational governance;</li>
<li>Human rights;<strong> </strong></li>
<li>Labour practices;<strong> </strong></li>
<li>The environment;<strong></strong></li>
<li>Fair operating practices;<strong></strong></li>
<li>Consumer Issues;<strong></strong></li>
<li>Community involvement and development.<strong></strong></li>
</ul>
<p> </p>
<p>Other key considerations in the Standard include:</p>
<ul>
<li>Comprehensive engagement of stakeholders;</li>
<li>The assessment of an organisations sphere of influence;</li>
<li>The development of specific and measurable indicators to chart the progress of social responsibility; and</li>
<li>Effective communication of social responsibility.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong></strong></p>
<p><strong>Implications </strong></p>
<p>In its current, draft format ISO 26000 is voluntary and non-prescriptive, and it is as yet unclear just how organisations will demonstrate use and adherence to this Standard.</p>
<p>The philosophies and principles outlined in the Standard are broadly reflected within AGL’s sustainability program. There are many parallels between the Standard and a number of other initiatives which AGL is undertaking:</p>
<ul>
<li>The Standard recognises the importance of reporting, and promotes the effective communication of social responsibility through the provision of transparent, comprehensive and balanced information to stakeholders. This philosophy is also embodied in the GRI framework and the AA1000 assurance standard, both of which are used to guide AGL’s approach to sustainability strategy and reporting.</li>
<li>ISO 26000 reinforces the need for independent verification of data, and recommends the application of robust reporting standards to enhance the credibility of sustainability reporting. This coincides with the findings from a number of studies on the state of corporate sustainability which show an upward trend in the adoption of both the GRI and the external verification of sustainability reports.   </li>
<li>The Standard also recognises the importance of engaging stakeholders, and AGL mechanisms such as the Customer Council and the Climate Council provide valuable communication pathways for maintaining and improving relationships with our stakeholders.</li>
<li>The importance of developing measurable performance indicators and metrics to chart an organisations progress against social responsibility is clearly stated in the Standard, which supports our continuing work in this area.</li>

<p>GHG, GRI, ISO 14000 and 26000&#8230;With all the social and environmental reporting going on these days, how can events choose an appropriate tool to track and report results? The easy answer isn’t the way out – yes, all these environmental indicators are currently optional so you don’t NEED to report any – because you are already looking to set a higher standard and hold your event accountable for achieving positive results. And importantly, successfully implementing almost all of these standards now requires independent, third party accreditation, which greatly enhances the validity of your environmental program.</p>
<p>Let’s start with the basics. First you’ll remember the 9000-series quality management (six sigma) standards from the ISO (International Standard Organization) in the 1980s. More recently, the ISO extended its standards to include ENVIRONMENTAL management standards, the ISO 14000-series. Now, coming into effect in 2010, the ISO’s 26000 standards will provide SOCIAL (CSR) reporting standards.</p>
<p>The 14000 series of standards do not dictate what exact environmental indicators you must report but rather states processes you must have in place. For example, ISO 14001 and 14004 ask if there are adequate environmental management systems in place, 14015 governs environmental assessment(s) of the site area, 14040 covers Lifecycle Assessments (LCAs), and 14062, 14063 cover your environmental communication processes. Any one of these can be accredited by a third party.</p>
<p>The future 26000 guidelines will be similar to the 14000 series in that they will not dictate specific measurements or indicators, but rather ensure a system is in place to measure Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). However, the 26000-series scope is much broader, since it covers not just environmental but equality and economic management, and they WILL NOT be accredited. That is, a company can use 26000 guidelines, but can never say they are “ISO 26000 certified” as they can for other ISO standards. Likely because of the extremely broad scope of the 26000, the ISO decided not to limit their applicability by any means, leaving the implementation entirely voluntary.</p>
<p>The ISO guidelines are inherently compatible with GRI and GHG protocol standards. As mentioned before, ISO provides assurance that the correct SYSTEMS are in place; GRI and GHG specify what exactly should be tracked and monitored.</p>
<p>The GRI (Global Reporting Initiative), developed in the 1990s, provides indicators for “sustainability” reporting, and covers environmental and social guidelines within an “ecological footprint”. The GRI indicators thus have a scope similar to the ISO 26000 guidelines, although the GRI focuses more in specific indicators rather than the reporting and management processes.</p>
<p>Lastly, the GHG Protocol is also compatible with ISO guidelines. Like the GRI, the GHG Protocol provides specific indicators for reporting, although unlike the GRI, the scope is limited to environmental greenhouse gas (GHG) indicators.</p>
<p>Since both GRI and GHG have specific indicators for environmental performance, and some companies use both, here the complication arises. The difficulty is aligning GHG definitions with their GRI equivalents, especially on carbon emissions. This is frustrating since tracking and reporting carbon (here I consider all carbon or carbon equivalents as CO2) has become the “big kahuna” indicator to report in recent years.</p>
<p>While this discussion can proceed much longer, I provided a brief chart (below) to compare the GHG and GRI indicators for carbon and energy emissions. Next week, we’ll cover in more detail how to align these reporting processes internally in your organization.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>In February 2009, <em>Ethical Performance</em> announced that the long-anticipated ISO standard on social responsibility is on the way.</p>
<p>The International Organization for Standardization published a 109-page ‘committee draft’ that promises to eventually become the international standard.  After national committees in 90 countries closely scrutinize the draft, comments on the draft will be discussed and changes may be made in a meeting in Canada from May 18th to the 22nd. The resulting standard, known as ISO 26000, is expected to be published in September 2010.<br />

Drafting for this standard began in 2004 and has been a painstakingly long process due to the ISO’s desire to establish a worldwide consensus on its contents among representatives of business, NGOs, unions, governments and consumers.</p>
<p>Unlike most other ISO standards, ISO 26000 is being developed as a collection of guidance notes rather than as a certification standard. While it will not lead to certification, it is intended to establish principles and offer advice to organizations hoping to implement social responsibility programs.  The standard, which will be applicable to all organizations&#8211;not just companies&#8211;includes guidance on areas such as engaging stakeholders, integrating social responsibility throughout an organization, climate change mitigation, anti-corruption, sustainable consumption and community involvement.</p>
<p>Companies are already lining up to use the standard, like Kuwait National Petroleum Company, which has made complying with ISO 26000 a key component of its new three-year CSR program. </p>
<p>These documents seem to be heading towards a new global standard in CSR, a concept that may change business and organization strategies as we know them.</p>

I takt med pågående globalisering och påvisade klimatförändringar tycks jordens befolknings sociala villkor, om än lågt rankat, äntligen ha kvalats in på agendan. Företagare med framförhållning har nu förstått att de måste nischa in åtminstone en del av sin verksamhet för att med hjälp av rättvisemärkning och socialt ansvarstagande kunna bemöta den ständigt ökade efterfrågan på rättvisemärkta produkter. En given anpassning till världsläget, kan tyckas.</span></strong></p>

Så varför skulle rättvisemärkning och certifiering för socialt ansvarstagande gå något annat öde till mötes? </span></strong></span></p>

Con esto, la RSE (Responsabilidad Social Empresarial) se convertiría en una medida internacional, pero de carácter voluntario.</span></p>

<title><![CDATA[Introducción al término RSC]]></title>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>La <strong>Responsabilidad Social Corporativa,</strong> cuyas siglas son RSC, también se conoce como Responsabilidad Social Empresarial (RSE) o Responsabilidad Social (RS), pero todas estas acepciones hacen referencia al mismo concepto. Aunque es un término que empezó a oírse no hace mucho se remonta al S.XIX, por lo que se obvía que pueda tratarse de una simple &#8220;moda&#8221;.</p>
<p>Podríamos definir RSC como &#60;el compromiso <font color="#ff6600"><strong>voluntario</strong></font> que asume una empresa para ejercer de forma ética y participarr en el desarollo sotenible del entorno social, medioambiental y económico&#62;. También puede entenderse como el &#8220;deber moral&#8221; que tienen las empresas de devolver a la sociedad parte de lo que obtienen de ella. </p>
<p>He resaltado la palabra <em>voluntario</em> porque hasta el momento no hay ningún decreto ley que la regule, y ¿a qué se debe su falta de regulación? pues a una falta de entendimiento entre el Gobierno y el tejido empresarial. El motivo de que las empresas se niegen a aceptar una ley regularadora de la RSC se debe a 2 motivos principales:</p>
<p>1º ya existen leyes que regulan los temas en materia social, ambiental o económica, por lo que sería regular lo ya regulado.</p>
<p>2º es una ventaja competitiva que diferencia a unas empresas de otras. Si la RSC se convirtiera en una ley de aplicación general las pocas empresas que actualmente están enfocadas a la RSC perderían esa diferenciación respecto al resto.</p>
<p>En general, los <font color="#008000"><strong>prescriptores</strong></font> de la RSC lo que defienden es que sería peligroso para la sociedad que las empresas sólo se dedicarán a llenar sus arcas únicamente en beneficio propio. Mientras que los <font color="#993366"><strong>detractores </strong></font>opinan que lo que sería peligroso es que las empresas gestionaran temas concernientes únicamente al Estado igualándose sus respectivos poderes.</p>
<p>Aunque no son muchas las empresas enfoncadas a la RSC parece que el sector se está despertando. Cada vez hay más memorias de RSC, más patrocinios de eventos benéficos y sociales o de acciones con fines altruistas. Ya sea por un motivo o por otro, los empresarios parecen haberse dado cuenta de la importancia de esta filosofía. </p>
<p>La RSC es algo cada vez más cercano y a pesar de no tener ninguna ley específica que la regule, exiten normas que la contemplan como la <em>ISO 26000</em> o el <em>Global Compact</em> propuesto por la ONU en el año 2001. También existen rankings de las empresas más responsables, como el <em>MERCO.</em></p>
<p>Alguno, como yo que vengo del mundo de la publicidad, puede pensar que la RSC no puede entenderse sin la sombra del marketing porque por muy altruista que sea &#8221;esconde&#8221;  un beneficio evidente para la empresa. Quizá para alguien de rr.hh este pensamiento es totalmente descabellado y frío pero, en mi opinión, presentarse ante la sociedad como una empresa socialmente responsable da puntos en términos de imagen, lo que se traduce en un beneficio económico.</p>
<p>A pesar de ello, pienso que aunque la RSC tenga un punto marketiniano en beneficio para la empresa, al menos devuelve algo a la sociedad que hay muchas, la mayoría, que ni eso. Además, casi nada en esta vida se hace simplemente por mera filantropía todo tiene un interés oculto que beneficia más a unos que a otros, y yo pienso que tanto mejor que ambas partes salgan beneficiadas a que sólo sea una de ellas.</p>
