Note: This requires the application Speed Download from Yazsoft I recently freed myself from Firefox

Note: This requires the application Speed Download from Yazsoft

I recently freed myself from Firefox, but I do miss some of the extensions I used. One of them allowed me to download YouTube videos but only in the Flash video format (.flv). From there I had to either watch them via VLC (which is a great app) or convert them with iSquint (which is no longer maintained) to watch them on a portable media player like an iPod or Zune. There are other options, including sites that convert files in various formats. The problem I had with using online sites was the speed – sometimes it would take forever to convert the file while other times it would convert quickly but the download would be slow.

My personal preference for downloading anything is using a download manager because of various features, from resuming downloads to adding additional connections that can speed up the download (unless a site limits downloads by IP address). My download manager of choice on the Mac is Speed Download, and I just found out about a capability that gives it another plus in my book. Speed Download can download YouTube videos in a .mp4 format for easy viewing. Here’s how to do it:

1. Go to the YouTube page hosting the video you want
2. Right click anywhere in the browser window except on the video
3. Go to Speed Download > Download YouTube video
4. Go to ~/Downloads/Music (default Speed Download setting), or where ever you specified in Speed Download’s Preferences
5. Watch movie

Since YouTube has updated their weside to accommodate the wider HD format I’m finding that my usual tools for copying video down — to transfer to my iPhone for later viewing — is broken. I found the following javascript code snippet at several site (so I’m not sure whom to properly credit with it). Create a bookmark and instead of entering a URL, enter this code instead …

javascript:if(document.location.href.match(/http:\/\/[a-zA-Z\.]*youtube\.com\/watch/)){document.location.href='http://www.youtube.com/get_video?fmt=18&video_id='+swfArgs['video_id']+'&t='+swfArgs['t']}

You might also try installing this code by drag-dropping this link onto your bookmark bar to create a bookmark!

Navigate to a YouTube video page and then click on the bookmark to download an .mp4 of the current video to your computer’s download location. Then look to your download window to monitor the .mp4 file being downloaded. You’ll need to rename the “video.mp4″ default filename immediately after the download is finished, before you forget what it was!

Troubleshooting: If this doesn’t work it might be because you linked to YouTube from a referring site that has added some code to their link — claiming the referral. Copy-paste the URL link given inside the destination page on YouTube into a new browser window. Now try the script/bookmark given on this page.

—

If you’re working at somebody else’s computer just navigate to the YouTube video and edit “pwn” into the url directly in front of “youtube” and hit enter (e.g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TmIqy-Zk030&feature=rec-HM-fresh+div become http://www.pwnyoutube.com/watch?v=TmIqy-Zk030&feature=rec-HM-fresh+div) you’ll be diverted to a shadow website that’ll do all the work for you.

—

How to download Google video when it doesn’t offer the usual “Download video – iPod/PSP” button?

Warning: The solution I’m about to propose is not work safe or suitable for minors!

Copy-paste the Google video into a form field at bestube.com — the field next to the “download button”. The site will search for the video and come back with download options such as “Download for Flash Player (.FLV) here”. Use your favourite tool (e.g. iSquint on a Mac) to convert the .flv flash to .mp4 or other preferred video format.

So why the warning? The site post image previews of the videos it downloads for others — frequently it’s pornographic.

Niinpä on aika ottaa oikeus omiin käsiin. Welcome to the dark side!

AVIsta on syytä tietää eräs seikka.

Ensimmäistä mainoslinkkiä ei välttämättä kannata klikata, ja “free no virus no fake” on ilmeisesti Windows-krakkereiden käsitys huumorista.

http://www.techspansion.com/

http://www.isquint.org/

http://www.techspansion.com/visualhub/

Mainitsin aiemmin DVD:n.

http://handbrake.fr/

Muutamia muunnoksen perusperiaatteita

H.264 -pakkaus on tuskaisen hidasta.

Jee!

In the midst of summer in Alabama, a get-away is in order. This year, we chose a to bareboat charter a sailboat in Maine. We chose a classic wood yawl with a tiller.

Maine is a fabulous place to sail. Lots of inhabited and uninhabited islands and coves to explore. Lots of sailboats on the water dodging the colorful lobster pots scattered everywhere.

For cameras, I took my D80 for digital and FM3A for black and white film. My husband took his Canon Powershot G9 and our daughter took her D40. In addition, we took our Flip video camera. Because of it’s small size and ease of use, it gets thrown in the camera bag regularly. Our Flip video files won’t import into iMovie 08, so we convert them first into MPEG-4 files in iSquint. It’s a free application that works well enough for the purposes that we need for this quality of video.

With limited ability to recharge batteries, we were happy that all of us made it through the week on a single battery for each camera. For the video camera, we use Eneloop batteries which we have had great success with. They come pre-charged, hold their charge for long periods of time, and are rechargeable. I can not recommend them highly enough.

Here are some of the sights along the way:

I’m using Miyu for Mac OS X right now to make subtitle files for the BBC documentary Wild China. MIYU generally works very well. It is freeware so you don’t have to pay for it. You can save the subtitle file in many different formats, or you can export the AVI with the subtitles rendered. Nice options. It can only read AVI, and MP4 files as far as I know. However you can also use iSquint software to quickly convert almost any kind of video file to MP4. I would suggest doing this and rendering the .srt file with the original video using VLC if you need to have the subtitles rendered on top of the video permanently. I also use the iSquit free software to upload files to Youtube.

I recently upgraded to Leopard. It only took me almost a year to get around to doing it, yet I was still stoked about using the latest and greatest. I had to make the decision—Archive and Install or Fresh Install. After the first go around, I realized that my Tiger install was bloatted with apps. So I took the plunge. I backed up what files I could and decided to do a fresh install.

This go around I desperately needed to limit the number of applications to the essential applications that I couldn’t live without. The following is a carefully considered list of the the third party applications that make me a happy mac user.

Quicksilver

I didn’t understand the power of this little app at first, but after digging through, watching video, and customizing some things, I’ve come to find that it’s indispensable to me. I use it mostly as an application launcher but Quicksilver is so much more.

Firefox

This one’s a no-brainer. Firefox just has so many useful extension it’s painful for me that it’s just more useful on an everyday basis than Safari (Sorry, Jobso). I know, you say, Safari is faster. I’ve found that Safari is indeed much faster than my Firefox 2.0 for the Mac. However, I’ve been revving up Firefox 3 Beta 5 and it’s almost as fast. And it has those handy dandy add-ons. Plus, the star bookmarking just deads Safari. Damn you, Mozilla. Damn you.

MacTheRipper

DVD ripping software at its simplest. In best Samuel L. Jackson voice “Yes, they deserved to be ripped and I hope they burn in hell!

Unison

I’m a little slow. It only took me like 10 years for usenet and newsgroups to catch on. I use Giganews for bandwidth, Newzleech to find nzb files and Unison as a newsreader. Unison is THE newsreader for Mac. If none of this makes sense, head over here.

Perian

Don’t get me wrong, VLC is great. Why use it if there’s a pre-installed application in Leopard that can play most vids, with a little help. That’s where Perian comes in. Install this and you’re stock Quicktime application gets an engine upgrade, racing stripes and fat custom tires. You can play FLV, Divx, H.264 and most AVI formats. Add Flip4Mac to the equation also and you can leverage Windows Media (WMV) also.

Miro

Mrs.funkdigi and I dropped our Dish Network service. It was becoming a beast and in these days of economic slowdown, paying for a service that’s not ala carte (the way things should be), I couldn’t see paying over $120 for TV I wasn’t watching. I found out about Miro (formerly Democracy) and soon nixed satellite. Miro offers tons of content, like Joost, put has the added benefit of torrent integration. With Tv Rss I’m able to access only the shows I’m interested in.

Remote Desktop for Mac

On Tiger, I was using Parallels as a crutch. Parallels is a superb virtual machine product and coming from my Dell, I thought I’d find that I wasn’t able to get things done with just my Mac. So, I had Parallels as a backup in case I couldn’t do something on a Mac that I used to be able to do on my PC. Well, as I’m sure many of you Mac users already know, that wasn’t the case. During the time, I needed to Remote into my office machine if I happened to work at home. I found Remote Desktop for Mac (a Microsoft product LOL) and ditched Parallels.

iSquint

iSquint is a simple video converter that lets you compress video to a size suitable to you iPod or iPhone. It’s fast, has a small app footprint, and its reliable. It also can automatically add the converted file to your iTunes library. Battlestar Galactica on the subway. Rejoice!

The UnArchiver

A quick and dirty zip, rar, etc. unarchive tool. Again, nice and small.

iLife

I know, it’s beast sized. There are other applications that can be used to substitute just about every app in iLife. Oh, and it’s pricey. I tried my best not to reinstall, but wifey wan’t to use a slideshow for our re-wedding and I also need to edit a track to loop a couple bars of D’Angelo’s Higher. I found myself wanting to use iLife again because it is so well integrated into Leopard and just easy to use. So I’ll do the slideshow with iPhoto, burn the DVD with iDVD and use Garageband to create the instrumental. *shrugs*

Today, for instance, I learned waht I’m calling the “iSquint” trick: a way of downloading YouTube, SuperDeluxe and other flash videos onto the desktop and then flipping them for Quicktime. This one’s for the Mac.

Safari

A quick eye

HOW TO:

Download and install iSquint.

Pick a YouTube or Superdeluxe video you want to have forever and ever… or until you need to wipe your hard drive, you little scamp!

Click the link and the video starts auto-loading, now open the activity window (option-apple-A) and look for the current web page.

Find the .flv file. It’s likely to be the biggest and to still be downloading.

Option click it. Boom. It will start downloading into your download stack or wherever you have your Safari downloads go. This will happen while the window is still going.

Take the file out of the download bin and drop it into iSquint. Pick a target folder and hit start.

Now you have the flash video in .mp4!

I’m sure this has been documented somewhere (LifeHacker, whatever), but I’m glad to have heard this one word-of-mouth and now you have t-

Oh.

Right.

Note that I haven’t figured out a way to use it with my beloved Hulu. I think their eldritch magicks (read: proprietary formats) aren’t compatable with this trick.
