Travel experts from British Airways have selected their top 10 destinations for 2010, taking into ac

Travel experts from British Airways have selected their top 10 destinations for 2010, taking into account landmark sporting events in 2010 such as the FIFA World Cup, Commonwealth Games and Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Istanbul is expected to be one of the most visited European destinations in recognition of its recent title of ‘European City Of Culture’.

Richard Tams, British Airways head of UK & Ireland sales, said: “Customers recognise that there’s a world of opportunity out there – from tiger safari in India, to the FIFA World Cup in South Africa and the bright lights of Las Vegas. ”In 2010, holidaymakers will have more choice of beach destinations than ever, especially with our new services to Punta Cana, Sharm El Sheik and the Maldives.”

BA’s top 10 destinations for 2010:

Cape Town, South Africa
Nearly half a million supporters are expected to visit South Africa during the FIFA World Cup in June. Sue Botes, British Airways’ commercial manager in South Africa, says: “Cape Town has always been a popular destination; we expect the World Cup to push it to the top of the longhaul league table as the best place to be in 2010. We are already preparing for the event and have additional flights in place, as well as our local carrier Comair to connect fans to destinations around the republic.”

Istanbul, Turkey
As European Capital of Culture for 2010, Istanbul is Europe’s hotspot in the New Year. Offering great value for money and something for everyone – from beaches and bazaars to the breathtaking Bosphorus. Secret music gigs, rooftop bars and underground clubs dominate the social scene for the party-hard locals. In a search for value for a holiday currency, people will continue to travel beyond the eurozone next year. In the Mediterranean, Turkey will remain a favourite .

Las Vegas, USA
Not just a haven for partying – Las Vegas is firmly established as a family friendly destination with everyone from U2 to Cirque de Soleil performing on the famous strip.

Vancouver, Canada
Canada will play host to the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games in February and March. British Airways athlete Zoe Gillings is the UK’s number one snowboarder and hopes to compete in the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games. Zoe said: “Vancouver is one of the best all-year round destinations for snowboarding and Cypress Mountain in West Vancouver is one of my favourite spots to train.

Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
Punta Cana is one of the emerging destinations for holidaymakers in the New Year. Known for its golf and spa facilities, the island is one of the best-kept property secrets in recent times. Boasting a five-mile oceanfront, local hangout Cap Cana is rumoured to be the new playground for the rich and famous.

Dubrovnik, Croatia
Known as the ‘Pearl of the Adriatic’, Croatia offers privacy and tranquility making it a popular hideout for the jet set, including recent visitors Bill Gates, Jay-Z and Beyonce. Mirjana Dostal, British Airways commercial manager Croatia, said: “Dubrovnik holds many attractions and delightful boutiques, with each corner of the city offering a unique experience. However its cluster of private islands have made this a new favourite destination for Hollywood A-Listers to get-away.”

New York, USA
New York has always been hip, but the New Year will give us yet more excuses to plan a trip. Due for theatrical release in 2010 are two film sequels celebrating Manhattan – ‘Sex and the City 2’ and Oliver Stone’s ‘Wall Street 2’.

Stockholm, Sweden
Recently voted the best city in the world to live in, Stockholm has become the model city for others to follow. Europe’s epicenter of biodiversity and ecology will celebrate its official title of ‘European Green Capital’ in 2010, making it a popular choice for eco-tourists.

The Maldives
Set in the Indian Ocean, this tropical paradise will be one of the hottest destinations for holidaymakers and honeymooners in 2010. Collections of coral reefs boast unrivalled facilities for diving, while the picture postcard beaches offer chill-out bliss to the maximum.

Delhi, India
Thanks to the growing trend for ‘tiger safari’, nearby destinations Bandhavgarh Wildlife Sanctuary and Kanha National Park provide another reason to get off the beaten track and visit Delhi in 2010.
Judy Jarvis, British Airways regional commercial manager South Asia said: “There has never been a better time to visit India. Next year marks two special occasions – 80 years of British Airways flying to India and the first time Delhi will host the Commonwealth Games. With 45 weekly flights to five destinations, we offer an unrivalled service.”

After the last days bad experience, didn’t want to tread too much on my feet, and not wanting to regret my not visiting at least a few touristic spots, headed to a tour agency which was just a minute away from the hotel.Got myself two tours ,one for the same afternoon and the other for the next day early morning. The best thing about the tours was that, the buses come and pick you up from your own hotels lobby plus payment is accepted on the buses through credit cards as they carry the wireless Point Of Sale machines. ( I got a bit unsure when the guy said you can pay by card to the office through the bus, so I thought I would withdraw cash from an ATM and pay cash to the office). Since there was plenty of time for the bus to come and I had to withdraw cash, the person in the office adviced to go near to the blue mosque where I could find an ATM and I could probably visit BASILICA CISTERN, the underground water channel/reservoir built in history by usage of people in that time. I did as he said, had some talk with the staff from cafe lokum ( cafe lokum became a place where I used to go everyday for lunch/dinner and got a lot of info on the methods of getting myself to the malls in Istanbul).
Went back to the hotel area and decided to try a new place to eat, ordered myself a mixed grill and met an over smart know-it-all staff member( the kind of people I don’t like). Finished eating and reached the hotel exactly right before the bus came.
The tour had two USPs , Dolmabache Palace ( the palace where there founder of the Turkish Republic lived) and the highest point in Istanbul {which was over the Asian side(residential side of Istanbul},palace was so -so and the highest point was so-so too. Met an aged Australian lady, who was quite happy to meet a Pakistani speaking english( had a random thought, on how good an opportunity it is promote your country being with tourists from all over the world by behaving humanely).
Walked to the Cafe Lokum had dinner and chatted with them on how wanted to visit
Nis(h)antas(h)i again ( the area where I had stayed the first night),upon which I was told, why not go to Kanyon Mall ( the open mall). And I asked them how can I reach, so one of the guys told me if I visited him tomorrow he’d let me know on how to reach the mall.I’d say the day had gotten over but before I go towards closing the post it is appropriate to mention the modes of public transport available in Istanbul.
Taxi-Metro-Tram-Bus-Metro Bus- Mini Bus ( Wagon in Pakistan) , makes it quite accessible doesn’t it .
See you on Day 5.

The Turkish airline industry has continued to see significant growth this year, with growth in traff

The Turkish airline industry has continued to see significant growth this year, with growth in traffic at all Turkey’s main airports. New reports from several organisations and individual airports point to growth in both domestic and international traffic through Turkish airports this year – of up to 40% in some cases.

Firstly the most impressive growth is in Istanbul’s Sabiha Gökçen, with traffic up 41% so far this year. This is based on a 50% growth in Domestic traffic, and a 20% growth in international traffic. Sabiha Gökçen is now the fourth busiest airport in the country and is likely to overtake Izmir in 2010, especially as it recently opened its New International Terminal.

Istanbul’ Ataturk airport is also doing well, with a 3% growth in international traffic in the first half of the year. According to the report this is because of new international routes started by Turkish Airlines, to Benghazi (Libya), Gothenburg (Sweden), Mashad (Iran), Nairobi (Kenya), Sao Paulo (Brazil), Toronto (Canada) and Ufa (Russia), and more. Domestic traffic fell 3% at Istanbul Ataturk.

This growth continued in subsequent months, and by the end of October international traffic through Istanbul Ataturk was up 6.6%.

Country-wide traffic increased by 4% in the first half of the year, with passenger numbers growing at 11 of the country’s top 12 airports in the second quarter. This was based on a 10% growth in domestic traffic, with international traffic down just 3%.

This growth has accelerated in the second half of the year. According to DHMI traffic to Turkish airports increased by 14% in September, and by 10% in October, including a significant growth in international traffic. Country-wide traffic for the 10 months ending October was up 5.2%, on an 11.9% increase in domestic traffic, and a 0.1% increase in international traffic. The latter a significant turnaround from the 3% contraction in the first half of the year.

The increasing traffic to Turkey’s airports backs up recent reports from the World Tourism Organisation and the Turkish tourism ministry, of rising tourism to Turkey in the first half, and first three quarters of 2009.

Europe wide airport traffic has been increasing in recent months. Analysis of schedule data provided by the world’s airlines to OAG reveals that seat capacity at Europe’s over 600 airports at the beginning of the winter season is down just 2% versus the same period last year.

Popularly known as the strategic place where the ‘East’ meets the ‘West’, Istanbul in Turkey, is a historic and fascinating city, which bridges the continents of Europe and Asia. Situated on the west of the Bosporus strait, which is responsible for joining the Black sea and the Sea of Marmara, Istanbul has a diverse history that is packed with tradition and ethnicity of its various conquerors.

Istanbul is supposed to have been inhabited right from the primitive times, and excavations conducted in that place have unearthed several evidences, that date it somewhere between 5500 BC and 3500 BC. Records also point to the fact that the modern Istanbul was actually a small Thracian fishing village called Semista in 1000BC, which also had a port by name of Lygos.

By 667 BC, a Greek ruler by name of Byzas, from Megara, established his kingdom here, on the advice of an oracle of Delphi, and named it Byzantium. But it was besieged by the Romans in AD 196, and became part of the Roman Empire. The ravaged city was rebuilt by the Roman Emperor, Septimus Severus, and temporarily given the name of ‘Augusta Antonina’. But in 306 AD, Emperor Constantine the Great made Byzantium the capital of the entire Roman Empire, and from then on, the city was called Constantinople. The Byzantium Empire was more or less influenced by Greek culture, and was also a hub of Greek Orthodox Christianity, which resulted in the construction of several magnificent Christian architectural wonders, the prominent among them being the Hagia Sophia, which remained the world’s largest cathedral till 1850.

The Roman Empire passed through much turmoil due to attack from various sources, especially the Barbarians, not to mention their internal problems, and finally, in 532 AD, during the reign of Justinian I, the city was totally destroyed due to anti government riots. Though much favored for its ideal location, that made trade and transport between continents an easy affair, this very factor also proved to be the doom of Constantinople. For several hundred years hence, it had to face a lot of assault from the Arabs, Nomadic, Persians, as well as the Fourth crusaders, who periodically occupied it.

At last, in 1453, Constantinople was attacked and conquered by the courageous Ottoman Turks led by Sultan Mehmet II, who renamed it Istanbul. It continued to function not just as an important cultural, political and commercial hub, but also as their main centre for military operations too, till World War I, after which it was occupied by the Allies.

Sultan Mehmet II was supposed to have given the city a cosmopolitan social outlook. After deporting the remaining Byzantine population, a great many changes were made to the existing architecture in general. The old world Christian city was gradually transformed into a Muslim conurbation as the Emperor started rebuilding all churches so as to convert them to mosques. The great mosque and the Fatih College were built on the old burial grounds of the erstwhile Byzantine Emperors at the Church of the Holy Apostles. The Hagia Sophia too was converted to a mosque. But to his credit, the Sultan held a cosmopolitan outlook and for the greater part, allowed people of all faiths to settle in the vast city, and made effective use of their varied skills. Tolerance was a great virtue that was practiced by Sultan Mehmet II, and it was reflected all over the empire.Istanbul acquired a status of great importance in the eyes of all Muslims, after the conquest of Egypt, and its glory increased from leaps and bounds in the hands of its various rulers, many of whom were great patrons of art and architecture.

Although the capital of Turkey was changed from Istanbul to Ankara by Kemal Ataturk, in 1923, Istanbul still retained its attractions and continued to expand majestically. But gradually, due to the mass exodus of the various nationalities, especially after the war between Greece and Turkey, it became a prominent Muslim nation.

The many historic monuments of yesteryears, that are to be found there, like the various museums, castles, palaces, mosques, churches, etc contribute greatly to the increase in the tourism industry today. In fact, many of its historic architectures have been added to the UNESCO’s list of world heritage sites. Though no more a capital city, Istanbul, which is considered to be Turkey’s cultural and financial center, still retains its old world attraction and continues to generate its own individual history through out the ages.

KİMSE BEKLEMİYORDU BOBO ATTI

Beşiktaş’ın ikinci golü kimsenin beklemediği bir anda geldi. Siyah-beyazlı takımın attığı ilk golden yalnızca 3 dakika sonra Bobo takımını iki farklı üstünlüğe taşıdı. Ekrem’in pasıyla ceza sahası içinde topla buluşan Bobo, arkasında Lugano olmasına rağmen kimsenin beklemediği bir anda dönerek vurdu ve topu ağlarla buluşturdu. 2-0.

UĞUR NOKTAYI KOYDU

83. dakikada İbrahim Üzülmez’in ceza sahası içinde bekleyen Uğur İnceman’a doğru çıkardığı pasta sarı lacivertli savunma çizgi halindeydi! Uğur’a sadece dokunmak kaldı ve top filelere gitti. 3-0.

Fenerbahçe’de, sakatlığı bulunan Güiza, Beşiktaş’a karşı derbi mücadelesinin kadrosunda yer almadı. Dün akşamki antrenmanda sol ayak topuğunda ağrı oluşan İspanyol forvetin, bugün yapılan kontrollerden sonra kadroya alınmadığı öğrenildi. Cezalı Bilica da Beşiktaş’a karşı derbi mücadelesinde takımını yalnız bıraktı.

Sakatlanan Emre Belözoğlu yerini Vederson’a bıraktı. Daum ikinci hamlesini ise golleri bulabilmek adına yaptı. 66. dakikada risk alan Daum, orta sahadan Mehmet Topuz’u çıkartırken, Semih’i oyuna aldı.

Since the Ottoman royal harems were filled with women from both the Mediterranean and the Baltic

Since the Ottoman royal harems were filled with women from both the Mediterranean and the Baltic – Italian families even casting their daughters on the Adriatic to be picked up by the sultan’s sailors — my Turkish husband jokes he finally brought me back to Istanbul where I belong.

I don’t know, in the span of history and forgotten connections of family, anything’s possible. My Lithuanian family name, echoing a town and river on today’s Belarus border, also sounds a lot like the imperial Turkish bloodline of Osman.

As a fourth generation immigrant, I’m so far removed from who and where I come from I’m visited by ghost urges from genes and culture long ago severed. Today I post at expat+HAREM, the global niche about how the mysteries of our extended lineage often crop up as synchronicity, wanderlust, and quirks of taste.

For instance, why does this Northern California girl raised on turkey burgers crave the beet soup borscht? When I feel kinship with my Ukrainian, Estonian, Jewish, Italian and Greek friends, what do their wide brows or brown eyes, their stoicism or talkative personality, remind me of? Do they mirror the mix that is me?

What ethnic or regional mystery reverberates in you?
