Before I start out this very special blog post, I would like to comment on what a wonderful job Jordan and Melina did planning a destination wedding from across the globe! From the scenery, to the details to the intimate feel of the wedding, everything was done impeccably and it made everyone realize what a very special event we were all taking part in. With that being said, Jordan and Melina were married at the beautiful Castello Del Trebbio, in Santa Brigida right above Florence. Here is some more info about this stunning venue,storiaaziendaingleseridotta, STORIAGRUPPOTREBBIOinglese-1. I’ve been to Italy before, Rome and Venice a few years ago but nothing like this. I was a young traveling back packer staying in hostels, this time I was there for work, I was staying at a private villa and I was in the gorgeous country side, a short train ride away from Florence. It was an amazing experience. Allow me to please walk you through the day first in words and then in photos. I started out the day with getting ready photos, the girls’ villa was brimming with excitement and could feel the wonderful energy. Our next venture was a “First Look”. When I met with Melina and Jordan about a month before the wedding to finalize details, when we worked all of the timing out, we figured we would have an hour in between the ceremony and reception to do family formals, bride and groom portraits, bridal party stuff etc. Which is normal and pretty much how most weddings go, as I was laying in bed that night running through the day in my head again, I thought “That is not enough time”. For a wedding here in the states I can always make it work although I usually recommend a first look to my clients, most of the time an hour can get the job done. But I explained to Melina, I felt like for a destination wedding in such a beautiful locale, we should allow a lot of time for bride and groom photos, I did not want this wedding to feel rushed. So Melina took my advice and did the “First Look” and I was so happy that she did! We had plenty of time to do some wonderful photos of her and Jordan, as well as bridal portraits. Her make-up and his suit were fresh and it was a nice way to relax and get their minds into the moment and not worrying about the ceremony, although I do have to say that they were 2 very relaxed and laid back bride and groom After the “First Look” we walked to the Castle where the ceremony was held in the court yard. Yes, they were married in the Courtyard of a castle!! How fantastic to be able to tell your children that! The ceremony was perfect, short and sweet. BTW, the light was amazing that day. Soft, diffused and just great the whole day. After the ceremony we did our family formals, bridal party photos and then headed to the restaurant where dinner was held. Now, unlike most American weddings, this was not just an hour and a half dinner where everything was done according to specific times and the wedding coordinator was running around making sure everything was done to the minute, nope, when you’re in Italy you sit and enjoy your food and wine. 5-6 courses, you laugh, you talk, you eat, you enjoy life. It was wonderful. The food was delish, although I didn’t try the rabbit And the wedding cake, which was a real Italian wedding cake, was possibly, the best dessert I had ever tasted!! complete with a couple on a vespa cake topper! After dinner everyone headed a few feet away into the dance room. And believe me, dancing was going on for sure!! Everyone stayed late into the night, let loose and just had a great time. Needless to say it was a wonderful wedding and the trip of a lifetime. Congratulations to Jordan and Melina. May your lives be filled with love, light and happiness.

We are just back from one of our friend’s marriage, and this was in Poland, where we experienced the unique atmosphere of a 2 days of party.

The same days, we assisted in tv to the Royal Wedding…so this is the theme of the week…

I was then thinking of some adverts I saw in the local agencies for weddings in Italy. Crowds of relatives coming from Ireland and Uk use to go to Amalfi Coast, Sorrento, Venice, Rome and on the Lakes…well, good choice!

Italians too they use to marry in May, and when it’s possible they tend to go to picturesque locations too, but most of the times is in the main church in the city of the future wife.

Typical traditions of this day are launching rice to the married couple, when coming out of the church, cutting the husband tie during the restaurant time, dancing tarantella, eating from 2 pm to 8-9 pm and making lots of pictures in the nature with all the relatives.

You can easily recognize that there is a wedding going on in Italy, because the procession of cars accompanying the spouse’s car is making so much noise honking the horns loudily…

Usually the amount of amazing food you eat that day is enough for at least a couple of days…!

Elora’s big day finally came and went…and a beautiful bride she was.

My first Italian wedding and I actually made the bride late! I was following one of the bridesmaids and then lost her half way through town. With two Canadians in the car I was on my own for directions. Luckily I had enough sense to grab my invitation with the map on it…but I still managed to drive around in circles until my mobile rang…and it was the bride waiting in her car. “Where are you?”, “ummm, well I’m lost sort of…” I’m in Bogliasco, but can’t seem to find the church. Are you waiting for us?” “Yes, get your ass here pronto!” “I’m on it, but can you first give me directions?”

And so the story goes, I found the church and now she is officially a Mrs. : )

Phew! I’m glad Bogliasco is a small village!!!

Good news! I finally got my Passport. As long as I’m not deported, in a month’s time I have my first official Italian wedding to attend. I’m pretty excited about it and only wish that my husband was going to be here to be my date. Isn’t that why we pair up in the first place, to have a guaranteed date at these types of things?

Anyways, I will go it alone and hope not to be sat at the “kids table”. Although, my Italian language skills would be more at par. I think the last Catholic Italian/Canadian wedding I attended was my sister’s in 1989. And although I remember having fun at her wedding, I also remember being quite drunk before dinner from too many shots in the receiving line (apparently it’s an Italian tradition to toast each guest-250 to be exact-although I suspect my brother-in-law made that up just to liven things up a bit and I stupidly took this tradition literally). Go ahead, insert all the blonde jokes you can!

I certainly don’t plan on a repeat performance, however I’ve also heard that weddings over here are quite different and perhaps I should consider a loose-fitting dress. If it’s anything like Christmas and every other family gathering I’ve been to then I shall expect a marathon lunch followed by me rolling out of the restaurant 6 hours later in a dazed fog and desperate for a nap.

I know the wedding is taking place in a charming seaside village. Do you think it would be inappropriate to take a refreshing dip in the sea between courses? I mean honestly, I’m dateless, who’s gonna notice? ; )

As you may or may not know, Arcularius Events is a Three-Sister Team. The three of us, Catriona, Mairead, and Marianna, love combining our unique strengths to create events that are truly one of a kind. We would like to take a moment to introduce ourselves, because you are sure to meet (at least) one of us if you hire or work with Arcularius Events! This week, we’d like to introduce the youngest of the three sisters, Marianna.

Marianna has worked with Arcularius Events for the past two seasons as our Associate Wedding Planner. As a recent graduate of UC Berkeley with a double major in Art History and Italian Studies, she is passionate about all things Italian and can assist couples who want this romantic culture to be a part of their celebrations.

Since graduating, Marianna has been working at the de Young Museum in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park where she works in customer service and education. Her specialty is public speaking, so she helps introduce large school groups to the museum and its special exhibitions.

Marianna will soon be joining Arcularius Events full time, where she will assist with day-of coordination and behind-the-scenes organization. She ensures that design elements are set up according to plan and that every detail is attended to. Since she loves working with people, Marianna is our go-to girl when guests need direction or assistance. She is a vital part of our Three-Sister Team, which we will continue to introduce in just a few days!

Weddings, Wine & ...Womance

The things I’ll do for a good alliteration..

So I went to my first Italian wedding this weekend, and I don’t think anything could have prepared me for the massive amounts of food, wine and love. It was Constantine’s cousin’s wedding to another Italian so it was a double-feature of incredible proportions. Let me give you a brief run-through of the day:

Pre-wedding Brunch
Ceremony
Post Ceremony Lunch
Reception – this made up of an antipasti buffet, six-course meal and sweet table.

Sensing a trend? There was enough food there to last me the year! And what meals there were; antipasti of fresh cheeses and delicious grapes, homemade sweets, every variety of cured italian meat, fresh roasted lamb; a main meal of seafood risotto, truffle pasta, veal and lobster tail and finally a sweet table laden with such decadence that I had to avert my eyes in order to avoid the temptation of Death-by-Gluten (but oh how worthwhile it would have been!)

I nibbled and tasted my way through what courses I was able to eat, but I was almost thankful for my various intolerances as they kept me light on my feet for an epic, epic night of crazy dancing.

The bride was beautiful, of course. There’s nothing more significant to me than the expression on the groom’s face when he sees his bride for the first time. There’s no time for composure in that split second, instead I treasure the awe and overwhelming gratefulness that I have seen in some grooms’ faces; the expression that reads: You’re mine. I can’t believe you’ve chosen me.

After dinner, fueled by excessive glasses of mulled wine (I LOVE the idea of a winter wedding, by the way, I’ll include a recipe for this at the end of this post), martinis and endless glasses of champagne, I was all over the dancing with Constantine and his family. I don’t think I’ve ever had so much fun on a dance floor. You should of seen the Zios and Nonos strutting about with their wives. The band played one song in particular several times and it was met with the bounciest dancing I’ve ever seen. I went online for the lyrics and found them just as charming as the people dancing to them:

Charmed? Skip past this paragraph if the beginning of this post was too cheesy to stomach, I’ll make up for it with a recipe for that wine in just a minute.

What if I told you that while we were dancing, Constantine was whispering to me. He was telling me how much he loved me and giving me the tenderest kisses you can imagine. When I’d be near him he’d reach for me for a just a second to touch my arm or my hand. Sometimes, when I’d be talking to one of his (wonderful, hilarious, desperately Italian) family members, he’d pause to kiss my shoulder as he walked by. His grandparents exchanged smiles every time they saw us, and countless people asked us if “we were next.” This of course is going to be a long time coming considering we are fledgeling adults still struggling through university. I’m not worried about what will happen between now and then, however. They say there comes a time when you know you’re with ‘the one’. I know now that I’ll spend many dreams imagining the look on his face when it’s my turn to walk down the aisle.

Alright, alright. Thank you for bearing with me. Weddings are such an emotionally-charged event that I’m still in a swoony state of mind. Days later I’m still finding myself on a furtive

hunt for pictures of beautiful brides and their engagement rings. This is one of the many reasons why I’m pleased that Constantine doesn’t read this blog. The idea of my looking at diamonds could be a little intimidating. Of course, who doesn’t do this from time to time? It’s not a desperate, overly-romantic indulgence at all. And besides.. it’s not like I have a particular setting in mind.. ^~

(Just in case you were wondering, that there is my absolute favorite: a pear shaped diamond with two baguettes set in platinum. Not that you were indulging in my guilty pleasure yourself, tee-hee.)

Alright, so now that you’ve feasted your eyes on a recipe-less description of incredible food, consumed an alarming amount of virtual cheesiness while I waxed on about my love for love, and finally observed my private (secret) love for all things wedding, I think you’ve earned the recipe for the delicious mulled wine we enjoyed at the reception.

Aromatic Mulled Wine

This made my loft smell like Christmas all day (: It’ll remind me of the wedding every time I take a soul-soothing sip.

Ingredients

1 bottle of fruity red wine
1 cup of sugar
1/2 cup of brandy ^~
1/2 cup of water
2 large oranges, thinly sliced
1 large lemon, thinly sliced
2 apples, cored, peeled and thinly sliced.
1/3 cup of raisins
2-3 cinnamon sticks
4-6 cloves, whole
pinch of nutmeg

Preparation (easy!)

Place all ingredients into a saucepan over low heat and simmer, stirring occasionally. Your wine is ready to enjoy when the sugar has dissolved and the rich liquid releases it’s deliciously wintery smell.
If you’re expecting friends and family for dinner, I suggest that you prepare this so that it is piping hot and fresh when they walk through the door.

If you are a Michigan State Spartan, you should be pleased to hear that yesterday, the Pope himself blessed Michigan State University! And no, that is not a lie. We got up extra early yesterday and traveled down to spend the day in Vatican City. It reached a high of 90 here yesterday and we watched the Papal Audience in St. Peter’s Square in the scorching sun. I have never sweat so much in my whole life like I did yesterday, it was disgusting.

Seeing the Pope was amazing and I took some incredible pictures. I also got a video of the five minute English interpretation and naturally, the very last group blessed was MSU so when I post the video, watch it to the end! I will upload photos/videos soon so keep an eye out for that.

From there we got lunch, toured the many, many museums within the Vatican Museum with Susan Sanders and lastly, saw the beauty of the Sistine Chapel. We weren’t allowed to talk or take pictures so naturally Susan told us everything about it while we were there and I got some great pictures I will post for you soon!

Today Aubrey and I went for another run. It was once again amazing but I’m worried my sweat tastes sweet because I am covered in bug bites and Aubrey is fine. Yuck. Tomorrow we are catching the bus at quarter to 7a.m. to go to catch the train to Cinque Terre. Our professor Tom is taking us hiking through the mountains and cliff diving. It will be another super sweaty trip but one I am highly looking forward to. All my roommates and a few other people will be traveling after that but I’m coming back to Rome to shop and catch up on my Independent Study project.

My roommate back home, and my dear friend since kindergarten is engaged so I am researching traditional Italian wedding customs. If you know of anything that you could tell me about traditions/how the weddings compare to American weddings/customs/gifts, any information would be useful. I would like to ideally get her a traditional Italian wedding gift while I’m here so Kerrie, if you read this, hope that works out!

I’ll update again soon with news from Cinque Terre and any findings I have on Italian wedding customs in case you too are interested. Hope you are doing well, miss you as always and I will be home 2 weeks from tomorrow. Gosh time is flying by! Ciao!!
