The camera is never around when you need it.

I have a Flip Camera (that I LOVE) that always seems to be on the floor above or below where I need to be to record momentous occasions with the boy. I am an audio geek, so I usually have my iPhone and my iTalk app at the ready. We’ve managed to catch a few cries, babbles and other sundry sounds associated with a small child. But, we’re at the stage (walking) where you kind of have to have the camera to capture it. Sure, mom and dad can yelp with delight as the boy walks, but it just doesn’t seem to have much caché as actually filming it.

As alluded to earlier, I LOVE my Flip. Without sounding too much like an advert (no, I’m not being paid to write this — just a friendly gift suggestion), I would highly recommend it as a gift for the dad on your list. They’re not terribly expensive and they make it easy to shoot and grab the video. You can even capture images as stills. It’s also extremely intuitive. One could say that I’m technically inclined, but it is nice to be able to see universal icons on the camera that are clear and easy to understand.

The trick, though? Just keep it in your pocket. Don’t be like me and say, “wait, let me run upstairs again to get the camera so that we can try to stage what was otherwise a very spontaneous and precious moment.” It usually never works. If we try to have him walk when we’re rolling, he usually tumbles to the floor and crawls over to the red light on the front of the camera — with a big smile on his face, of course. Because that just seems to be the way he rolls.

Hvad gør man?

I use iTalk some of the time as a voice recorder. I used it several times during interviews for my d

I use iTalk some of the time as a voice recorder. I used it several times during interviews for my doctoral research. But twice now, I’ve had my iPhone freeze in ways that threatened my data. There’s virtually nothing online about this, as far as I could find. But I think I’ve found a way to preserve the data. I’m writing this post in the hopes that others might find it helpful. The short answer: open up the “Applications” app, and install any and all updates. That might make all your applications available again.

First, the problem: Occasionally, the iPhone freezes in such a way that requires you to force-shut-down, by holding both the top button and the button just under the screen. This weekend, in D.C., my touch-screen became unresponsive. It allowed me to see that Jen was calling, for example, but wouldn’t let me answer. I force-shut-down and restarted it, which only resulted in the little Apple icon, nothing more. I happened to be across the street from a two-story AT&T center, so I ran in there, where a woman plugged it in to her computer. That brought the phone back to life. This was much like what had happened to me before at home: if you plug it in you might get certain basic features back. Phone service, texting, Internet… anything that comes built in will work. But any applications that were added won’t; you tap on it, and it acts like it’s opening for a second, but then immediately quits before it can get started.

The first time this happened to me, I plugged it into my computer, turned on iTunes, and “reset” the phone. DO NOT DO THIS unless you’re okay with losing your data. Doing that, I lost all my iTalk recordings, with no hope for recovery. (Thankfully, this was before I did my interviews.)

THIS TIME, I knew better, but still thought I’d lost my data. I plugged into iTunes on my Mac after I got home. What I wanted was for it to do something that would reset the software without telling it to “reset,” which seems to give it the green light to delete your data. Fortunately, a software update was available. I updated. Still wouldn’t let me open applications. Facebook, Pandora, iTalk… nothing that wasn’t built in would open.

Finally, I opened up the “Applications” app, where I had five updates waiting for me (though iTalk was not among them). I told it to “Update All,” which it did. Then I tried to open one of the apps that had been updated: Facebook, maybe. It opened. I tried another, which I wasn’t sure had been updated. It opened. So I tried opening iTalk. And it opened, with all my data there.

So my guess is, crashing interrupts the iPhone’s ability to communicate with secondary applications (those that the user selects and installs), which can be restored by either resetting the iPhone or by using the Applications app to install any updates. This method appears to preserve your data.

Of course, the safe thing to do is install iTalk on your computer and immediately transfer them off your phone. But if you’re bothering to read all this, that seems obvious to you now…

var gaJsHost = ((“https:” == document.location.protocol) ? “https://ssl.” : “http://www.”);

try {
var pageTracker = _gat._getTracker(“UA-11682536-1″);
pageTracker._trackPageview();
} catch(err) {}

Griffin is offering an app for your iPhone (or iPod Touch) called iTalk. iTalk turns your iPhone into a dictating machine. Best of all, the ad-supported version of iTalk is free. You can avoid the ads by paying just $4.99.

I’ve not personally seen iTalk in action, but from Griffin’s description, it certainly sounds like a useful tool for your iPhone at a very affordable price.

Just imagine you went out to a mamak stall and upon reaching your pocket you found out that you have

Just imagine you went out to a mamak stall and upon reaching your pocket you found out that you have left your handphone at home. I know a few would stay and said “oh it’s ok” but I know for some that would just rushed home – just too scared to leave their handphone behind. Let’s face it, in the new era of technology, handphone is an essential tool to keep you connected – One would simply feel incomplete if they don’t have it along with them. Heck, even a cleaner or maid have one of those nowdays – and they can watch TV with it too!

Let’s face it, we have too many providers offering their so called best affordable services to all. But if you are a person like me, you would try to find an alternative cheaper solution to your needs.

And here is where the ITalk from Telekom kicks in!

I bought one quite some time ago during their RM0.25 per minute promotion call from mobile to mobile (the promotion is still valid by the way) for RM10 and since then, had helped me to save better on phonecalls.

It’s actually very easy. Just purchase the card (also acts as a starter pack if you are wondering) that comes in RM10, RM20 or Rm50. There will be a self guide at the back of the card with a toll free number to register from either landline or mobile phones. It’s pretty self explanatory so I think I’ll just skip that part here.

To start using, first you need to dial the toll free number and wait for a callback. Once you received the callback, you can start dialing the number of the recepient and press # (don’t press dial button on your phone or else it will initiate a conference call and you would waste your mobile bill for nothing). And that’s it, start talking

But of course, with every cost saving features (well, most of them anyway, not all) there will be drawbacks and there’s no exception to this one either.

First, you need to remember the number that you wish to dial before calling the Italk toll free number.

Second, due to the Italk automated response system, there is no time for you to switch to your phonebook whilst Italk is waiting for you to response back with the number (I personally have a small span of memory to remember things quickly – hence when I open my phonebook, I will only remember the first 6 or 7 digits / eg. 012-123… / and need to switch back to phone, and then back to phonebook to get the remaining entries, which, at this point of time the Italk system will announce the number is incomplete or something and I would need to start over again). So the best thing is to have a pen and paper handy to write down that number!

Third, I’m not sure if it’s a unique case with my phone, but when I’m low on battery, it seems that the automated Italk system failed to hear what I dialled, and kept giving me an incorrect result – forcing me to dial straight from my mobile operator instead. There are also a few circumstances where the other party did not hear me clearly and vice versa, but I guess that’s conditional and subjective to the mobile operator line quality and strength – so I have nothing to say much about it (although I know how much we like to rant about Telekom and TMNet)

I heard there’s a new pack with a sticker which you stick on your SIM card, and that you can actually dial straight from your phonebook to ITalk, although I have not tried that myself and found it’s a bit paranoid to stick something straight to your SIM card… I mean, who knows what else it can do!

Calling mobile to mobile is cheap, and mobile to TM landline is cheaper, I usually get around 40 minutes talktime on a RM10 ITalk card, compared to roughly RM14 or more if I were to use my mobile operator normal rate.

I am a prepaid user, therefore by using ITalk, I can save more. There had been numerous promoters tried talking me into getting a postpaid line, but I refused as my bill is lower than their minimum subscribed plan per month.

If you are a prepaid user or just need to save some bucks on the long run, then ITalk is the smart way to save

My iPhone’s fifth screen is probably the most important and most used screen on my phone, with the exception of the main screen. Here I keep apps for blogging and editing content, apps for bookmarking and sharing, social apps, and other very useful apps. And the apps on this screen may be used in tandem – for instance, I might modify a photo with Scribble before I post it using WordPress or Kyte.

Yammer

Yammer is like a Twitter for companies or organizations. With Yammer, you use the status paradigm to communicate with your organization, or group or subset thereof, with organizational tools to help monitor/control/structure the communications for productivity. This may sound pretty bland – but if you have a company using Twitter at all, you should consider moving company communications to Yammer as the productivity focus is useful and refreshing.

In addition to the Yammer site, you can install a desktop app or a Firefox plug-in to keep you abreast of your company’s chatter (you’ll soon hear audible “Yams” all around the office). Add in the free iPhone mobile Yammer app, and you’ve got yourself a killer business application.

Pros:Easy to update and read other’s updates. Offers most Yammer site functionality.
Cons:Have to manually refresh lists too often to see the latest comments, particularly in threaded conversations.

Yammer asks “what are you working on?” and keeps the answers to your company.
Yammer is creating a LinkedIn around a particular company rather than around a person.

LinkedIn

Linkedin is a social network for your business network. For me it’s a fine source for posting jobs, finding jobs, and helping friends find jobs.

Pros:Solid app for updating LinkedIn status.
Cons:Limited app features, with focus upon simple status updates. Missing many key site features.

LinkedIn network updates in all their connected glory.
Yep – like Yammer they ask what you’re working on… but unlike Yammer, the point is to reach through your network, not discuss company business.

Citysearch

Citysearch has been around for ages – and this is essentially why it’s on my iPhone. The content is rich with editorial reviews, user reviews, and other useful articles (best bars, best drinks, etc…) If only they’d allow remote reviews through a mobile app (Yelp could learn from this too) this would be indispensable. As it stands, it’s a good place to go when you’re on the go and wondering where to go.
Pros:Strong reviews, good extra content, locative based service is excellent.
Cons:No tie-in with citysearch.com account information. No remote reviews/ratings.

I know, I know – Citysearch is old news grandpa.

kyte producer

Kyte Mobile (as talked about in my last article) is a syndicated channel version of YouTube – and Kyte Producer is how you create content for the channel while out and about. But wait, you say, how do you create video off an iPhone? You don’t – sorry. But you can create typical blog content (text and photos) and upload them to your otherwise vlog. It’s interesting to see that Kyte gets it isn’t an either-or proposition – and this app is as good as you’re going to get on an iPhone.

On a related note, check out the live Kyte mobile vlogs… it’s mind-blowing stuff.

Pros: Update your Kyte channel on the go.
Cons: Can’t create video content. Mobile preview is awkward.

Create a mobile Kyte blog… sorry, but we all know iPhone doesn’t have video.

popurls

This is a bookmark of the mobile version of popurls.com. Popurls is an extraordinary news aggregation site and their mobile version is invaluable for those times when you’re looking for news or entertainment.

Pros: Great mobile news aggregator
Cons: Would be nice to have the popurls account customizations on the mobile version.

Digg

Another bookmark of a site – Digg.com. Digg is a social bookmark site where popular links bubble to Digg’s front page. The mobile version is pretty good – allowing you to view your history and Digg stories up.

Pros: Digg on your mobile. Login to your account for limited additional functionality
Cons: Can’t comment or submit articles remotely. Can’t view all comments associated with an article.

Digg mobile isn’t an app – but it should be.
Scribble

You know what they say – if you just do one thing, do it well. Scribble let’s you scribble on photos – simple as that. The other saying that comes to mind here is “you get what you pay for.” It’s a free app – so I’m not complaining at all… it does it’s job well.

Pros: Scribble on photos and save results to your library.
Cons: It’s free – can’t complain.

Scribble on your photos.
iTalk

iTalk is an app by Griffin that allows you to record audio on your phone. What’s interesting here is that you can record 3 different levels of sound quality – useful in particular for those times when you want to record music.

Pros: 3 different sound quality levels
Cons:need separate iTalk Sync application to transfer files

iTalk uListen.

Google Reader

This is a bookmark to the mobile version of Google’s Reader service. The site is so smooth you’d swear it was an app – it’s a great example of using the web platform to your advantage. And since Google Reader has integrated with Facebook feeds, I’ve been completely addicted.

Pros: Great mobile RSS reader that when you account for some of the integrated functionality (again the FB integration) makes for a compelling site
Cons: Missing feed management

Google Reader is a fabulous RSS reader and a shocking iPhone app given that it’s just a mobile site.
Evernote

I first became aware of Evernote when I bought a jumpdrive and Evernote came pre-installed. Now, I’m a big fan of MS OneNote, so I understand the value of note-taking software, but was initially skeptical of Evernote’s offering. Of course, the mobile app closed the deal – Evernote on iPhone is a killer killer app… something you’ll find yourself using again and again for everything from snapping whiteboards or taking dictation to shopping lists or remembering where you parked.

Pros: Access your Evernote notes on your iPhone or create new notes using audio, photos, files, or text. Evernote service offers great cross platform integration through desktop and web apps.
Cons: Won’t someone please offer a horizontal view when editing text? Please pretty please?

Evernote on the iPhone is purdy and is the perfect personal assistant. I use the Griffin Clarify as my case, and have to say – it’s a must have.

Box.net

I use Box.net for file sharing and I’m really happy with the service. It’s reliable, and flexible – you can use it for content delivery, or use it to track whether that doc you asked someone to read was actually accessed. The iPhone app offers sharing capabilities and limited view capabilities – which is fine since most of the files you probably won’t want to directly use on your iPhone.

Pros: Box.net on-the-go. Access your files on the iPhone.

Cons: Needs a better PDF viewer. Horizontal view, anyone?

Share and view your Box.net files. Honestly, after trying to read a PDF on my iPhone I quickly understood the market for the Kimble.

Translator

What can I say about this one – it’s a free translator. Nothing too great about this app – it translates text-to-text… no voice, no audio, no frills. But I’m sure one day I’ll find this useful – so here it is on my phone.

Pros: You had me at free.

Cons: Basic functionality. No idea how accurate the translations are.

Translate this…

Bloomberg

I was very surprised with this app – I had been using Yahoo Finance mobile, but Bloomberg just blows it out of the water. The information is much more in-depth, more usable, and the charting is spectacular. Never thought I’d see a pretty finance app, but here it is…

Pros: Full featured, lots of details, horizontal chart is excellent

Cons: Could be more integrated with other 3rd party sharing services or some sort of web-based account.

Bloomberg has the latest news and can be customized with an impressive array of categories and locations.

WebMD

WebMD, the ubiquitous medical information site, will soon be a ubiquitous iPhone app…. this is my prediction. The app is simply too useful and deep – it isn’t a rehash of the site on an iPhone, but tailors to the particular health use-cases one might have… first aid, for example. Pharmaceutical, for another. It’s a great app, and for hypochondriacs, a source of endless anxiety I’m sure.

Pros: Deep information and thoughtful presentation.

Cons: Flexibility can be confusing – this should almost be 3 separate apps.

Brightkite

Brightkite is a social network similar to Loopt in that it’s focused on your location and the location of your friends. I don’t really find the service very useful personally – but I still use it as a novelty… and I find it’s maybe not a better service than Loopt, but certainly less creepy. I find most of the people who are in need of this kind of social network are ‘looking for something’ if you know what I mean… if you don’t, post a pretty picture of yourself somewhere and see what happens (note: it isn’t pretty).

The iPhone app itself is pretty functional – offering check-ins and remote photo postings and maps of the locations of your friends.

Pros: Rich app offering much of the web experience – comments on postings, photo uploads, friend invites, messages

Cons: Creepy service… don’t believe me – try searching for a name.
