More 100 members and friends of the Foreign Trade Association had a day of fun and raised money for a worthy cause on a recent fall day. The day began with a Shot Gun “Best Ball” golf tournament at Rio Hondo where close to 100 golfers had a great time catching up with colleagues and showing off their best shots. Everyone was a winner, but those taking cash prizes at the gala dinner following the tournament included the foursome from Horizon Lines with first place low net, Purolator taking second low net, and Avalon Risk Management in third. Long drive winners were Fred Woolfork, Worldwide Flight Services for the men and Nancy Hiromoto, Citizen Watch Company, for the women.

Closest to the pin winners were Heather Morris, Port of Long Beach, for women and Rob Romain, Puralator, for the men. The day held something for everyone with some fabulous raffle prizes including a Citizen watch, Pioneer DVD computer writer, walkie-talkies, iPOD Nano, gift certificates and gift baskets, books and TV DVD series.

17, inciso I, c/c o 18, caput, ambos do CPC.

Arnold Schwarzenegger in LA

LOS ANGELES — California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on Monday launched the California Green Corps (CGC) to promote the state’s emerging green economy. The CGC, part of the state’s efforts to utilize federal economic stimulus funds and public-private partnerships for green jobs training, will place at-risk young adults aged 16-24 into jobs in California’s emerging green economy, Schwarzenegger said in a statement.

“President (Barack) Obama and I share similar priorities right now when it comes to helping the economy rebound and creating a greener California and America,” said Schwarzenegger.

“In California we will utilize federal economic stimulus funds and public-private partnerships to help stimulate our economy while initiating actions to improve our environment.”

The governor said green jobs are exactly what the economy and environment need right now, and the CGC targets that need while helping at-risk young adults realize a brighter future.

Investing at least 10 million dollars in federal economic stimulus funding from the U.S. Department of Labor and an additional 10 million dollars from public-private partnerships, the initial phase of the CGC will consist of a 20-month pilot program reaching at least 1,000 of California’s at-risk young adults, according to the statement. The program will consist of a minimum of 10 regional Green Corps throughout the state, with at least one regional Green Corps located in each of California’s nine economic regions. All programs will be public-private partnerships that include green job training, a stipend, an educational requirement and community service, the statement said. To help ensure the success of the Green Corps, it will be housed under California Volunteers, an agency in a unique position to leverage federal economic stimulus funding and to work with public- private partnerships and across state agencies, said the statement.

This program furthers the goals of California’s Green Collar Jobs Council which was created when Schwarzenegger signed Assembly Bill 3018 one year ago. The Council is charged with developing a comprehensive approach to address the workforce needs associated with California’s emerging green economy.

On Thursday, June 4, 2009, ConocoPhillips and Banning High School (BHS ) Student representatives, George Kolarov, head counselor for the BHS International Trade Education Programs (ITEP) Academies at the PORT school group were present for the ceremonial launch with Carol Rowen, CEO, ITEP, which received a $10,000.00 check from Platinum Sponsor ConocoPhillips Community Relations Director, Tony Cordero. ConocoPhillips has been a longtime supporter of ITEP.

Rowen says the new recycling business is collaboration between the Port of LA International Trade Academy (ITA) at Banning High School and ConocoPhillips. The business will be student-run and it is the brainchild of Tony Cordero. CP has a cafeteria on their facility and way too many cans, bottles and paper. Cordero was looking to start a recycling program and as everyone collaborated, he suggested that it be a business run by the BHS students. That’s when ITA stepped up. So, the bins are on the CP campus and the students will manage the program and the ITA will be the recipients of the money raised by the recycling project.

“I would not be here today if it were not for the Port of Los Angeles and the international trade industry and others who have support our growing organization over the years,” said Carol Rowen, CEO & Founder of International Trade Education Programs (ITEP)

LOS ANGELES – CA, May 19, 2009 — “Whoa, I can’t believe it,” said Founder & CEO Carol Rowen, International Trade Education Programs (ITEP) when her named was called out as the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce’s 2009 Winner of the 76th Stanley T. Olafson Bronze Plague Award today (Tuesday, May 19, 2009) at The 83rd Foreign Trade Association Annual World Trade Week Luncheon & Trade Fair.

The Stanley T. Olafson Bronze Plaque is give each year to an outstanding member of the world trade community in SoCal who has contributed above and beyond his or her job requirements throughout a long career in international trade. The criteria for the award are:

International experience
• Contributions to the community
• Involvement on boards/organizations
• Interaction with today’s youth through teaching, mentorships and workforce education

The First STOBP award was first given by the LA Area Chamber of Commerce in 1933, Olafson was President of the Foreign Trade Assn. of SoCal in 1928.

“I would not be here today if it were not for the Port of Los Angeles and the international trade industry and others who have support our growing organization over the years,” said a teary-eyed Rowen. “There are a lot of people who have faith in what we are trying to do for economically challenged high school students.”

Keynote Speaker Derek Shearer, chevalier professor of Diplomacy & World Affairs, Occidental College, Los Angeles, congratulated Rowen during his address to about 300 plus attendees. “The Foreign Trade Association should put more pressure on California, the City of LA, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and the LAUSD board to include international trade as part of the regular curriculum, and not in just two or three high schools, but all of them. ITEP is doing a good job,” Shearer said, noting that many graduating students lack education on International Trade and the world around them.

Carol Rowen, a longtime activist and businesswoman, founded the International Trade Education Program in 1999. The non-profit organization introduces high school students to careers in maritime trade, transportation and logistics.
