I bought Phoenix’s It’s Never Been Like That a year late.  When I graduated from college at the beginning of May, I found myself, for the first time, subletting my apartment for the summer, packing up all of my worldly possessions from college, and driving back home for the last time.   The album came out in 2006.   I picked it up in 2007, about one month before I flew to Philadelphia to begin my two year commitment to Teach for America.

It’s Never Been Like That was that perfect fresh blast of soft and pop music I needed for the summer.  I spent many nights driving down the canopy roads and thinking about the choices I had made up to that point, the choices that had gotten me to being back home in Tallahassee before I started a job I had no qualifications for, a job where people just told me, “It’s so tough.  You have no idea”–all the while Phoenix was playing in the background.  (So was MGMT.  But what self-respecting semi-hipster indie-fan didn’t have them spinning all summer long?)  I waited in Tallahassee for almost two months.

The nervousness of my impending future/disaster (…it’s so tough…) played in my head.  It reeled over and over again.  Possibility after awful possibility played in my head as I permuted the possibilities of the future my decisions had led me to the former here and now.

Then, all of a sudden, I was in Philadelphia.  Phoenix was still playing on my iPod, and I was desperately listening to anything to calm my nerves.  I was aloof in a place where people weren’t allowed to be aloof.  I was in TFA.  As a requirement you are asked to be social all the time, to participate, to be active, to meet people, to schmooze, to engage, to question, to discern, and to do a whole host of other verbs.  I walked in the crowd, headphones in.  No clue where I was going, but confident the group would get me to where I needed to go.

   I even doubt tomorrow will be as easy as it was

I was ambivalent about TFA.  I didn’t exactly buy their sales pitch once I became a   member of their organization.  I doubted what they were really about, I didn’t want to get involved with them much, and it seemed as though the more I rejected them, the more they rejected me.  (NOTE:  This is only tacitly true.  Once I, later, began accepting them, they became more accepting of me.)

The rest, as I shall say, is history.  Last September came and went, and here I am a year older.  Phoenix is still with me.   And now they have a new album, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, to sustain me and relate to my life.  When the lead singer Mars hits it, he hits it right.

The question is, which lyrics will define this year?

i rarely do this sort of thing, but in the case of this video, the combination of my affinity for mall punk (okay fine, paramore) coupled with phoenix’s fantastic it’s never been like that album make for an overly indulgent viewing experience for me.

“Lisztomania” by PHOENIX

Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix is sure to be another soundtrack to my summer.  I can’t even begin to explain how much LOVE I have for this band.  I found out about them when I traveled to Paris in high school, and I promised myself I wasn’t leaving France til I had Alphabetical in my hands.  Victory was mine, and I spent the 8 hour flight back listening to it on repeat.

So gooood.

La primera vez que fui a Francia tenía 16 años. En el año 2000, la globalización musical que hay ahora estaba todavía en desarrollo. Nos ceñíamos a las novedades que nos ofrecían las discográficas y las emisoras de radio. Sé que suena arcaico, pero pensadlo, no hace tanto tiempo desde el boom de Emule y The Pirate Bay.

Por aquel entonces, nuestros vecinos tenían como gran estrella a Alizée, que llegó a nuestro país años después. Fue así como me di cuenta de que en España ibamos con retraso para todo, y para la música también. Muchos éxitos que tenían en el país galo, nos llegaron a la península bastante tiempo después.

Así es que en Francia descubrí al grupo Phoenix. Una banda underground que logró convencerme rápidamente y que se consagró entre mis imprescindibles con sus discos Alphabetical y It’s Never Been Like That.

Y para mi regocijo interior ahora vuelven con un nuevo disco… Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. Escuchemos, pues, estos sonidos sacados del Versalles más indie (y no hablamos de la Maria Antonieta de Sofía Coppola, aunque haya utilizado alguna canción para su mítico Lost in Translation).

En attendant le 25 mai pour la sortie du quatrième album de Phoenix intitulé Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, ces quatre français ont décidé de vous faire patienter en vous permettant de télécharger gratuitement un de leur titre : 1901.

Vous allez donc pouvoir découvrir ce morceau ici où il semble que le groupe a décidé de revenir aux sources avec des sons plus electro-rock comme dans United, ce qui n’est pas étonnant vu que c’est Zdar de Cassius qui, comme avant, est à la production de ce dernier opus.

Están confirmados para el Primaver Sound 2009, son franceses y su anterior trabajo, ‘It’s never been like that’ mola a más no poder. El próximo trabajo llevará por título, ya lo dijimos, ‘Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix’ y hoy han desvelado una de sus canciones. Podeis escucharla en su myspace y descargarla en su web oficial o pinchando en la foto que nos ilustra. La canción, que se llama ‘1901‘, podría haber formado parte de su mencionado y molón ‘It’s never…’. Es quizás algo más killers que la media de aquel álbum pero mantiene la mayoría de las señas de identidad que mostraron entonces. Es divertida, optimista y pegadiza. Personalmente tengo especial predilección por el apartado vocal de esta banda, esto es, Thomas Mars, dueño de una voz aguda y afinadita, con personalidad y gancho.  Abajo un video.

Cuando Chris Cornel se presentó en Chile ese ya mítico 10 de diciembre, un par de horas antes, se subió al escenario una de las bandas que me han tenido rallando la papa desde que vi una de mis películas favoritas, Lost In Translations (Perdidos en Tokio), Phoenix.

Si usted señora señor, no sabe quien cresta es Phoenix, wikpedia se lo dice “banda formada en el 99 en el suburbio parisino de Versalles, dentro del mismo movimiento que vio nacer a Air y Daft Punk a finales de los 90. Phoenix empezó haciendo un remix del sencillo “Kelly Watch the Stars” de Air. Se volvieron rápidamente un éxito subterráneo gracias al sonido loungy/mellow y sin pretensiones de su álbum del 2000 United”

Como leyeron en el primero párrafo, yo los conocí en el 2003 ¿o 2004? Por la canción “Too Young”, que aparece en la película Perdidos en Tokio, cuando Bill Murray y la exquisita Scarlett Johansson la bailan en una fiesta.

Como Phoenix cachó que la mayoría del público presente iba a ver a Chris Cornel su show lo hicieron más rockero, y vaya que les salió bien. El batero casi mata a esa pobre batería. La canción Long Distace Call, sonó más rockera que nunca, tanto, que terminaron ganándose a todo los chascones fans de Chriss Cornel.

Además sonaron canciones como It’s Never Been Like That (obvio), Too Young (obvio), y Consolation Prizes. Algunos reclamaron porque no tocaron Everything is Everything, pero para mi, es una canción menor, así que me dio lo mismo.

El dato Innecesario: El vocalista de Phoenix, Thomas Mars es el novio de Sofía Coppola ¿Qué nos dice esto? Que si tienes una banda y quieres aparecer en el soundtrack de una película, tienes que comerte a la Directora.
