This post is my 501st, so I thought to myself what can I do to celebrate such a milestone? Actually the 500th post would have been a better one to celebrate but I missed that with all the excitement of the Olympics clouding my view. So is the number 501 meaningful in any way? well yes it is; it’s the score that most darts matches count down from. So does that help me come up with a theme for a celebratory 501st post on this blog? A darts theme on a music blog? Is it possible? Can it be done? Will this idiot stop rambling and get on with it? Well indeed I will. Welcome to my special darts themed post to celebrate issue 501! Let me add that when I say darts-themed I do mean that in the loosest sense possible!

So I thought I’d choose three darts related songs, one to represent each of three darts used in every turn at the oche. With the first dart I have hit, rather obviously, Darts the group. This band had quite a bit of chart action in the late 70s. They had a run of seven consecutive UK top 20 hits from 1977 to 1979. This included three that stalled at number two, sadly this meant they never reached the top spot. Those nearly number ones were; “Come Back My Love”, “The Boy From New York City” and “It’s Raining”, all from 1977. Their cover of the classic “Duke Of Earl” was produced by none other than Roy Wood off of the Move, Electric Light Orchestra and Wizzard. Another glam period connection is that Rob Davis the guitarist from Mud was briefly a Dart. That was before he went on to reach amazing heights as a songwriter including song such as Kylie’s “Can’t Get You Out Of My Head”. The song I have chosen from Darts is one that also sums up summer so far in the UK this year; “It’s Raining”

For my second dart I am selecting Franz Ferdinand, the band as opposed to the famous Archduke. Their first single was released in 2003 and was called “Darts Of Pleasure“. Interestingly it was released on the Domino label, another popular pub game. Alex Kapranos of the band has said in interviews that the song is actually about seduction and that the darts of pleasure that hit you are in fact words. It was written by Kapranos and band colleague Nick McCarthy. The single peaked at number 44 in the UK charts in 2003. however their follow-up, the festival friendly “Take Me Out” was a smash. It was their biggest UK hit reaching the heady heights of number three. It also made the top twenty in Canada, Ireland and New Zealand, along with a creditable number 66 on the US Billboard chart. So now you can enjoy “Darts Of Pleasure”

For my last dart I had no other option in my opinion other than Dexys Midnight Runners. In 1982 the band released a cover version of Van Morrison’s song in praise of the late, great Jackie Wilson; “Jackie Wilson Said” (I’m In Heaven When You Smile)” The song reached number 5 in the UK charts, Morrison’s version was never a hit in the UK but did make the US top 75. Dexys played the song on the BBC’s Top Of The Pops show in 1982 and the screen behind them displayed a picture of darts player Jocky Wilson rather than supreme soul singer Jackie Wilson. For many years it was thought that this was a cock-up on the part of the Top Of The Pops production team. However Kevin Rowland has subsequently revealed that it was the band who asked for a picture of Jocky Wilson. Apparently they often referred to the song as Jocky and if this is true it just goes to prove that underneath that supposedly serious demeanour Mr Rowland has a damned good sense of humour! So here is my final dart, hitting a double top to win with a classic from Dexys!

Now that we’ve come this far, I’ll be showing off some must haves in the new wave region of the 80s. This serie will be in four parts, ranging from today up until Sunday. Featuring both well-known and obscure gems from the new wave past. Just so that you can have your obligatory reading and some well-needed tips for your music-pool. Not that you’d have a need to expand it after visiting Invisible Guy, but I’ll show you some things that you’ve never heard of but should’ve heard. Hopefully this will be a listening pleasure and hopefully you’ll find tips suitable for yourself. As I said in the latest episode featuring minimal wave: the numbers mean nothing.

9. It’s Raining - quirky, happy and up-tempo new wave. Coming from the US, consisting of Stephan Vernier, Brad Ross Fairman, Matthew Smith and Chris Lindensmith. They released two EPs and a full-length album, and I’ve chosen their EP Radioland (1984, Certain Records). I picked the song Radioland, because of the lo-fi percussion in perfect harmony with dreamy synths and fast riffing. It sounds like a love-story gone wrong, and I like the singers voice a lot.

8. International Sin - your perfect blend of new wave, darkwave and goth. This time, we’ll move to Europe, more precisely: France. This band consisted of Thierry Hilaire, Vincent Morand, Laurent Chaix (also involved with the Des Jeunes Gens Mödernes compilation), J-André Orlandi (producer for Strahler), Didier Marty and Mali Mango (backing vocals on Yalil). Unfortunately, this is one of those bands whom only released one album. So I picked their debutalbum (and only album) Out (1986, Contorsion). I chose the track Matin De Paris, because it embodies everything that International Sin is all about. A perfect edge around the dark wave elements, a small hint of post-punk influence and a heavy dose of gothic atmosphere (via the bass and percussion).

7. Great City - welcome to the more experimental, disco-ish and schizofrenic side of new wave. I don’t really know much about the members or those behind this music, but I can tell you that I was blown away by their unconventional approach to new wave. Surely, something you must hear. So, this is also one of those bands who have only contributed with one release and then disappeared from the map completely. This one is essential, so pay attention: I chose their one and only self-titled album Great City (1986, Impressive Records). I decided to pick the most unconventional and weird song they have, namely: Too Much Tunder. Mostly because I love the vocals and the weird synths circulating around the percussion and minimalistic bass.

6. Actuel - almost a psychedelic blend of new wave and rock. Straight from the awesome country named US of A, consisting of: Gary Rabasca, Søren Berlev and Steven Anderson (contributed to multiple records, among those: Di Leva – Jag Är Du). I picked their debutalbum Monuments (1984, Actuel Records). And I chose their song No Regrets because of the dimension of it, the swooping bass and the melancholic atmosphere makes for a great song, accompanied by Steven Andersons lovely voice.

5. The Toilets - bass-driven, dark and heavy new wave. Straight from the Netherlands, consisting of: Gerard Terwisscha Van Scheltinga, Peter Waterlander and Paul Dokter. So these damn Toilets have managed to influence me in a bad way, or should I say: dark way. I never knew that new wave could be so dark and grim, but now I know something new at least. They released three EPs, a split and a full-length album when they were active. So I decided to pick one of their less anticipated, or should I say: more unknown releases. It’s titled Boxjunction (1980, Top Hole Records), and is one of the earliest new wave gems I’ve had in the recommendations so far. I picked the song titled Life At The 12th, a less up-tempo song than the self-titled Boxjunction, but it still manages to kick some butt in that department. The flanged riffs accompanied by the slow but escalating drumming is awesome.

The trip was extra long because of all the rain. I was stuck in a bunch of traffic so I stopped at a McDonalds for lunch. Usually I would have ate while driving.

I get to Austin between 3:30 and 4:30. I don’t remember too well. The first thing I do is get some food because all the braking and accelerating made me hungry. I go to the Hill’s Cafe, with a friend, and get corn nuggets.

After this early dinner, we head over to the mall. We wait around until the movie we want to see is about to start and then go watch that. That was that day.

Day 6 started with the drive home. It was another long ordeal because of the continued rain. An 18 wheeler flipped over and was causing a lot of traffic. This time I did eat my McDonalds on the go. I also stopped at the Chez Stop for some kolaches. They are delicious.

I got home around 3:30. I ate some kolaches and watched some Breaking Bad. Then I played Spanish Scrabble ( I won ). Then I went to dinner and now I’m home.

2002-2003: Debut

I’m prone to falling when surfaces are slippery. I have fallen a few times on our porch. I fell in the shower not too long ago. I flipped on a wet tennis court. Water does not help my mobility. Just ask how well I swim.

ahh major things due by on Wednesday. Three things are on my mind. First, group project tomorrow. Second, class on Monday is going to be brutal. Third, major documents due Wednesday along with a 2 minute public speech thing.

I’m also have an inkling that something is going to happen with the car. It’s been too long since anything happened to it.

Laundry. I’m running out of the, essential, clean clothes. I might get started on that early in the morning. I don’t think I can wait and try to do it on Monday.

(I thought I could place the following sentences somewhere and have it make sense, but I can’t. I don’t do two typical laundry things. I don’t separate my colors from my whites or use fabric softener. I’m keeping them because they are important to how I do my laundry, but they aren’t essential to today’s post.)

I like to take my clothes out to dry, so today wasn’t a good day to do laundry anyway.

It never rains. It pours.

And the way I don’t even I can’t asdfghjk. This’ll probably be nothing, and I will just remain alone for the remainder of my sad, pathetic life.

My pops came into my room and said he knew where to watch the boxing match online. I checked out his website but it was misspelled so it was trying to sell me books. I found the correct spelling and the correct site.

So we went spent the night watching boxing.

Now this post isn’t about boxing. It’s about how I stopped studying for my test Monday to spend some time with pops. It was a moment we have never had together because we’ve never had pay per view.

Pops is a good guy. I’d go as far as to say righteous. Sure he gets mad quickly and yells, etc. but he doesn’t lie, or cheat, or steal. He has good moral fiber.

So he wanted to watch some pay per view boxing. Is there anything wrong with that? Can’t he for the first time in his life watch it?

Just in case there is something wrong with that, I take full responsibility for it. I found the website. I used my computer to access the internet. The internet is under my name, sort of (It’s under a Luiz Hernandez). I connected the computer to the TV. I did it all. I could just as easily NOT have found the website.

Is that so wrong? Maybe.

In my defense, a story.

I have seen 30 Minutes or Less 3 times in theaters. I wanted to watch it again, so I went to 3 different Redbox locations. At the third Redbox location the guy in front of me took the last copy. So I went home, and after 10 minutes, found it online. I started watching it. I got about 30 minutes into the movie when I checked my Redbox App and found out that it was available at one of the Redboxes I had previously been to. I rush over to get it and continue watching where I stopped.

Was that so wrong? I had already given them (5 tickets at 10 dollars a pop) almost $50. Do I not deserve to watch it as many times as I please? With $50 I could have both the Blu-ray DVD and the regular DVD! I should be able to watch it for free after I give them that much money.

Been taking it pretty easy this week. Monday was nothing, Tues did boxing at lunchtime, Wed Pilates (which didn’t kill me – surprise surprise!), and that’s it really. The leg feels good enough to go for a little waddle on at least, but I’m enjoying lying flat on my back on the puter listening to the birds outside being excited cos it rained last night.

My eyes are feeling all buggy though, I may take an antihistamine. And I really should get up and make a coffee. And maybe some breakfast.

Today, 154.2, and I’m happy with that. Despite feeling like it’s not moving at all for weeks, it actually is, and I’m way happy with that. It took years to go on, it’ll take years to come off. One lady I follow on Tumblr has been losing weight for 4 years. I am hoping I won’t have to wait that long till I’m at my comfy place – which, incidentally, doesn’t really have a weight or a date. I’m just going to keep going till I’m done.

Awwww…. another one off to MS. This time none other than super hallyu star Bi. My one time crazy obsession. My one time love. Although I have not followed his news for the longest of times, he still occupies that one small corner in my heart. He who led me into crazy drama fandom (Full House), he who lured me into K-pop, he who made me believe that hard work does pay off if you believe in yourself.

Altho I don’t feel an extreme gush of sadness seeing him enter MS (probably used to it now), I do feel tad empty seeing his fans sending him off in tears. Farewells are always hard to endure. But like they always say, you part for a new beginning. It’s not the end.

Just hope that when he comes back in 2 years, he’ll be better, and better and buffer (haha, maybe not, cos he’s already so buff).

Yup, you’ve gotta go. But rest assured, we’ll be looking forward to your comeback! An-nyeong Bi! Take care and see you in 2 years!

Well yes it is and at times one wonders if some automobile giant has done some kind of a match fixing with ‘Indra’, the God of rains. Now for those who wonder why I am throwing up utter inanity, they need to rethink. Even more so those who have been witnessing the rains that are reeking havoc in most parts of our nation. And whatever little was left is taken care of by our ‘mustaaidh’ government agencies ensuring that if it rains a little more than usual, cities turn into Venice!

May be they do it as a part of the larger game plan which the common man does not comprehend (just like any other move of theirs!) as some tourist promotion tactic, but then without boats to venture out or navigate, it does get a tad impractical.

Well coming back to why I suspected an automotive giant to have conspired with Indra. Who knows if ‘Maruti’ is planning a convertible vehicle, wherein all it takes is a push of a button to see it turn into a boat.

May be this one is going to put an end to the sleepless nights the government agencies seem to be getting. No, no, not in tackling the problem arising out of torrential rains and inapt/ choked drainage system, but how to dodge the public and evade all responsibility that they seldom own up.

Now having a boat is perhaps a permanent solution to the problem and even otherwise it will be good, for given the water logging its impossible to get on to the road to register protest of any kind.

And I even suspect the present government might have done some kind of ‘yagya’ to please ‘Indra’. For that seems to be the only hope left for them so far as preventing ‘Anna’ and gang, from sitting on a hunger strike (in support of their version of the hyped Lokpal bill) was concerned.

Well whatever be the reason but the common man is the one who as usual gets to face the music, whether it is the holy wrath or the government’s inaction’s aftermath.

And yes lest I forget, its an earnest request from my side to the concerned authorities planning an artificial lake in Jammu that kindly look into the ones that are already there thanks to the choked drains and an
appalling sewer system of the city, unless and until that was how the artificial lake is being envisaged!
