Time to talk about The Offspring, one of the best punk/alternative rock bands I know. They formed back in 1984 under the name of “Manic Subsidal”, and in 1985 they changed their name to The Offspring (I think it was a good choice). They have a great sense of humor in their songs, but they can also be very serious at times.

Probably their most successful album is Smash, which is their biggest selling album and set the all-time record for most units sold by an independent label band with 16 million units sold. Smash was also their most punk rock album and only their second album.  A “smashing” hit (pun intended) from the album is Self Esteem. It’s like a comedic song about a person who has no self esteem.

The album that followed was Ixnay on the Hombre, one of my favorite albums. Dexter said “Ixnay on the Hombre” means “F*** authority” and “F*** the man.” The album was different than Smash  because it wasn’t as punk rock, but more mainstream. The album includes Gone Away, a song Dexter Holland, the lead singer, wrote about the death of a loved one. Another hit is All I Want (I really like this one) which is about sticking it to the man. The message of the song is pretty much saying, “Hey government, stop trying to control my life! Thats all I want!’ Another song in the album is Change The World, which talks about how people always promise that they are gonna change the world, yet they do nothing to work on that goal. For example, when congressmen say “Vote for me and I will do this and that”, and in the end, they don’t do what they say.

From my knowledge, they have 9 albums and another one coming out in 2010, but i’m too lazy to talk about all of them. Maybe in another post. 

Other songs I love from The Offspring are: “Dammit, I Changed Again” “You’re Gonna Go Far Kid” “Hammerhead” “Why Don’t You Get A Job” “Pretty Fly For A White Guy” “Stuff Is Messed Up” “Can’t Repeat” and a lot more! So please give them a chance and check out their songs.

Ixnay on the Hombre é o quarto álbum de estúdio da banda americana The Offspring, lançado dia 4 de Fevereiro de 1997. Foi o primeiro álbum lançado pela gravadora Columbia Records, exceto na Europa, onde foi o último da banda lançado pela Epitaph Records, devido a desavenças entra a banda e o co-fundador da gravadora, Brett Gurewitz.

Sobre as faixas do álbum destacam-se as canções “All I Want“, “Gone Away” e “I Choose“, que foram lançadas como single.

 1997, και οι Offspring κυκλοφορούν τον δίσκο Ixnay On The Hombre, το πίο υποτιμημένο punk album των τελευταίων αρκετών χρόνων.  Είναι το κύκνειο άσμα των παλιών Offspring, του νεανικού punk, και της δε πα να γαμηθείτε (αμερικανίνο στάιλ, καμία σχέση με το μπρίτις δε πα να γαμηθείτε) φιλοσοφίας.

Ηχογραφημένο με το βάρος του Smash απο πίσω, τις
αμερικάνικες δισκογραφικές να περιμένουν λεφτά,
το mtv να θέλει κάτι viewer-friendly είναι θαύμα και το
πως κυκλοφόρησε. Σημειωτέων, τον επόμενο ακριβώς χρόνο,
ήρθε το Americana με το mtv-friendly sound,
τους πιο politically correct στίχους.

Αντίθετα, το IOTH είναι ενας καθαρός punk δίσκος που θυμίζει
περισσότερο Pennywise σε συνδυασμό με λίγο Dk και μεγάλη
επιρροή από τον Cobain και την παρέα του
, bonus vocals από τον ενα και μοναδικό Jello Biafra,
backing vocals από τον Davey Havok (AFI), τραγούδια
με τίτλους “The Meaning Of Life”, “I Want It All”, “Cool to Hate”.
Και είναι μεγάλο κρίμα πολλοι να αγνοούν ακόμα και ότι υπάρχει,
ενώ άλλοι να κατακρίνουν τους Offspring για τα μετα-Americana κατορθώματα.

Σίγουρα δεν είναι ενα album που απευθύνεται στον μουσικόφιλο 30αρη ++, αλλά κάπως περισότερο
για τον 14-18άρη που θέλει να βρει τον εαυτό και την ταυτότητα του. Που σιγα – σιγά θα ξεφύγει από την Βίσση και θα δει τι γίνεται παραπέρα.
