Ye Olde World data mining at Biblioteca de la Real Academia de la Lengua Madrid...

A long long time ago in a land called 2006, AOL proudly released three months’ worth of aggregated search data from 650,000 of its users. Oops. It was a PR coup extraordinaire and a real eye-opener for those of us who thought our online data was safe.

You can still search it now, for academic interest or casual data-voyeurism… for example, bung an innocuous word into AOLStalker, e.g. “trees” and pick a user:

Agent #41194 searched AOL for “flowering trees”. How nice. But you can also see they searched for “texas prison inmates”, “ballreich potato chips”, “slutinc” amid just a few other mangled, misspelt search requests.

With just four searches I think I can build a profile: user #41194 is a bored, hungry, horny worker in an Arboretum with a criminal record and green thumbs. (I jest, but what was many a truth done in?)

Other users were far more freaky: user 927 was looking for so much twisted crap (as well as orchids) that I’m loath to reproduce it on my tasteful blog; just read The Consumerist’s darkly hilarious post on it here and weep.

But knoweth this, fair reader: every time you use a regular search engine, your search data are recorded. Your search terms, the time of your visit, the links you choose, your IP address and your User ID cookies all get stored in a database.

This is not really a joking matter for those concerned about privacy. Thankfully, a slew of search engines have sprung up dedicated to preserving anonymity or privacy.

Ixquick doesn’t record its users IP addresses and deletes all user data within 48 hours. It was awarded the first European Privacy Seal in July 2008.

Scroogle disguises the Internet address of users who want to run Google searches anonymously, as well as giving users the option of having all communication between their computer and the search page be SSL encrypted.

So don’t feed the beast that is the data-mining industry, people, just Scroogle it!

Want privacy with regards to your internet searches? Consider checking out Ixquick, claiming to be the only metasearch engine that does not store your personal data. That’s not all. It claims to be the worlds most powerful metasearch engine and search results will be more comprehensive and accurate than other search engines.

As a metasearch engine it uses the results of several other search engines:

While I am happy with the meta search capabilities, I have at times been less impressed with the fact that I did not see an immediate option to go over all search hits for instance by search engine. Ixquick makes a relevant selection for you. At the same time, when you are in a hurry it can be very refreshing to not have to go through all the clutter. There are options of web, phone, video and picture searches and it allows for boolean search.

A Ixquick result is awarded one star () for every search engine that chooses it as one of the ten best results for your search. So a five star () result means that five search engines agreed on the result.

This is significant because search engines choose results in different ways, and each approach works well in some cases and poorly in others. A result with many stars was chosen for many different reasons, and is a consensus choice of many search engines.

Also, while irrelevant Web pages can be “optimized” to fool a single search engine’s algorithm, it is much harder for a page to fool all the search engines.

Privacy
Ixquick does not store IP adresses and uses anonymous user information to improve quality. 2 cookies are stored that save your search “preferences”, which you can change, and a “exclude repetitive results cookie. The preferences cookie experies after 90 days. If you liked what you saw, you can opt to download the Ixquick toolbar for IE and Firefox. There is a deskbar available for Windows computers. As a search engine or even metasearch engine this is not my favorite in terms of results but it is very convenient for those times you may want or need to protect your privacy when searching. I have been using this tool for a few years now have found it at times very helpful and convenient.

Exalead was allgemeine Suchmaschinen angeht.

Also erstmal eine halbe Seite runterscrollen. Arg.

Man kann also sehr wohl ohne Google auskommen.

Was weiß Google jetzt über Rüdiger?

a) Was er kauft

b) Wann er wie lange online ist

c) Was er geschäftlich und in seiner Freizeit macht

d) Was ihn interessiert

Nachtrag:

Google Apparently, within the next two weeks Google is planning to release a new version of Google C

Google

Apparently, within the next two weeks Google is planning to release a new version of Google Chrome that will include the ability to sync bookmarks between different computers.

“The synchronisation will be managed through a Google account”, said software engineer on the Chrome team, Tim Steele in a mailing list posting on Friday.

Sync or synchronisation is an act of causing software to operate simultaneously. So Google wants to synchronise Chrome with bookmarking software, much like our favourite bookmarking site del.icio.us.com

Google sees this venture as far more than just updating a list of links. In fact, it’ll be using the Google Talk (gtalk) infrastructure to handle the service.

Synchronizing will help one instance of Chrome to behave more like another, for example being able to retrieve more easily the address of a website that a user already visited on another computer

However Peter Kasting, another Chrome programmer, would’ve liked Chrome to have “history/visited link/omnibox syncing than bookmarks,” he said in a posting. Now if they do sync passwords and browser history, it’ll be quite a risk.

Privacy?

Now I have not used Google Chrome yet (so this not making a promo for it because they’re not paying me) but the issues of privacy are quite pertinent.

There are millions of users that are already storing information via search history on Google’s servers. With Chrome’s synchronization feature, however, you would also store a complete record of all of your comings and going on other parts of the Internet on Google’s servers.

Not so long again I discovered that there are search engines, like Dutch based search engine ixquick, that do not store data.

I’m sure you’re thinking this is not new. Indeed it isn’t, in fact there are companies that do the same as Google Chrome, such as the likes of Xmarks, Bookmarksync, Netvous etc. However, what is important to think about is how this will affect us in future and what is means for future innovations.

Core message

This week’s post on Chrome raises some interesting pointers. In a networked personal and business computing environment, users want to be able to enjoy a similar experience regardless of the computer or device being used.

Google Chrome browser is Google’s first step in the direction of creating an interface not just for the web and computing.

The idea is that if more users will access their data directly from the Internet as opposed to a computer?s hard drive, then Google will provide both the interface (Chrome) and Operating System (Chrome OS) that will run on many devices.

In doing so, Google is going head to head with Microsoft and Apple ? not just in the browser market but the OS market too.

The beauty of Google Chrome

It is a unique system that provides real-time automatic bookmark synchronization between all your different browsers, computers, and operating systems.

Add a bookmark to Internet Explorer at work, and it will automatically be sent to your Firefox browser at home and your Safari browser on your Mac!

Moreover I read that it supports Unicode, so it works for bookmarks in all languages and it encrypts your bookmarks so you can securely access them anywhere in the world on any PC or via your PDA, mobile devices, RSS feeds, and publish your favorites using JavaScript.

This can change the way we deal with computers and our work. Personally, I think it could be very useful to students since we move around doing research papers, essays etc.

But then one could ask who needs another hyper-responsive utility just for synchronizing bookmarks or browser history lists when we’ve go delicious.com?

Is Google Chrome pushing a hidden agenda? What I do know is that I’ll be watching Google like a hawk and see when it officially becomes of their plans. Futureye signing out.

Cet a

Google Basic Search Help site officiel

More Search Help site officiel

- Google Insight for Search

Voir aussi: SearchWiki: make search your own

1. Katherine Albrecht is a babe. But I digress. She is also one of the leading privacy advocates in the United States and she is waging a campaign against Google, that cute HUGE outfit that keeps all of your queries and associates them with your IP address forever. That sweet little search engine company that in 2006 came up with the cool idea to have your computer’s built-in microphone be used to listen to the ambient sounds in your room and then give you advertisements based on what TV show you are watching. Yeah, that company. This is also the company that has come up with Google Latitude so your phone can be used by your “friends” to track your every movement. She notes that Privacy International says that the software on your phone can be turned on by someone other than you. Gee. How sweet. Google also wants to use your medical searches to predict flu outbreaks.

So what’s a bird to do? Well, Ms. Albrecht (did I mention that she is a babe?) recommends that you can at least stop using the Google search engine so that Google can’t log any more of your search data. She also recommends the search engine by a company named Ixquick which, according to her and to its website, does not ever record any IP addresses and deletes queries with 48 hours. We’ve been using it exclusively at Mantiq al-Tayr for the past week and find that Ixquick is a great search engine. For example, if you enter “Anonymous Arabist” in the engine, you immediately get links to pictures of dead cats. Just kidding. The first two hits (after the ad links) take you to that artful, tasteful and relevant blog. So give it a try.

2. This dog is dead.

This is why. Ms. Albrecht has been campaigning against RFID chips for many years. More than this cute little doggie’s life is at stake. But it is sure is a sad story.

3. These people are morons. More on their ilk later.

In October 2006, a former CIA case officer claimed that Google is very involved with the CIA. Robert

In October 2006, a former CIA case officer claimed that Google is very involved with the CIA. Robert David Steele also claimed that the CIA provided Google with seed money when it was starting out.

That’s all bad enough, if true. But now Google is playing politics in Washington D.C.

Google CEO Eric Schmidt campaigned for Barack Obama and was on the Obama transition team along with three other Googlers. Now, Google is ready to capitalize on its backing of President Obama and pursue its agenda in the nation’s capital.

Rumors have recently circulated that Google is lobbying for a law allowing the sale of electronic medical records (which we will all be compelled to have if that part of the Obama “stimulus package” remains intact) – a rumor that Google denies:

Google does not sell health data. In fact, one of our most steadfast privacy principles is that we don’t sell our users’ personal data, whether it’s stored in Google Health, Gmail, or in any of our products. And from a policy perspective, we oppose the sale of medical information in the health care industry.

The thing is, Google doesn’t have to sell your medical data to advertisers. All they have to sell are certain keywords like “diabetes”, “pregnancy”, “cancer”, and so on to advertisers much as they do now with their AdSense program.

The difference could be, however, that Google could know what health concerns you have based on your electronic medical record. You could then receive targeted advertising whether you are actively searching those terms or not. Don’t believe me? Wait for it.

So how can you search the web without Google? Easy!

Ixquick Protects Your Privacy !
The only search engine that does not record your IP address.

Your privacy is under attack !Every time you use a regular search engine, your search data are recorded.
Your search terms, the time of your visit, the links you choose, your IP address and your User ID cookies all get stored in a database.

The identity profiles that can be constructed from this cloud of information represent modern day gold for marketers.
But government officials, hackers and even criminals also have an interest in getting their hands on your personal search data.
And sooner or later they will…

I just switched from Dogpile to Ixquick for better privacy. So far, my searches are returned very quickly and with better results than Google or even Dogpile.

Switch today and take a stand against Google tyranny!

Different rules apply to different browsers and nations. I can only speak from personal experience.

Different rules apply to different browsers and nations. I can only speak from personal experience. I use proxies for two reasons, by passing web filters, and getting around bans from forums I’ve trolled. Everything you do on the Internet leaves little clues behind that all point vaguely in your direction. Every search shows your interest or affliction, every website leaves your filthy foot prints on it’s white carpet, everywhere you go you leave a steaming lump of offal called an IP address.

“Trolling” is what fishermen do when they allow their bait to trail behind the moving boat until some gullible fish takes the bait.

Now most people have a dynamic IP and have no real reason to use a proxy except to cover their illegal activities. At least that’s the way it was 10 or so years ago before everyone got broadband. Now you still have a dynamic IP more than likely, but it’s probably only apt to change about once a month or sometimes once every three months like mine is. Now there are still very few real reasons to use a proxy for the average user, but never-the-less I’ll cover some real ones.

Chances are good that if you work at a company that requires it’s employees to use a computer to do menial tasks that require accessing a webpage and you tried to go to your favorite sites instead, you’ve encountered something similar to the Barracuda web filter. Web filters are like firewalls and in many cases are firewalls that keep you from going on MySpace and Facebook during work hours. The things these filters block are normally updated by one giant list at some cold server room with the additional list kept by your System Administrator. Now your System Administrator seems like a cool guy on the smoke breaks, but he probably won’t unban Facebook or MySpace so you can network instead of doing menial tasks. That’s where a simple web proxy comes into play.

I would advise you of my super secret web proxies, but I don’t want my enormous fanbase going and getting my proxies blocked, so just do a search for “web proxy” on google or Altavista or whatever you are using these days. Just don’t be upset when they release your IP to the Feds with all your search history exposed for the world to see. That’s right, I think. try out the new thing! IXQUICK!

IxQuick is a foreigner’s anonymous metasearch engine. It doesn’t store IP addresses even on anonymous users.

Your IP address is linked to you by your ISP and can (normally with a warrant) be used to find you!

Web proxies are well and good enough on their own, but what I really want you to know about is real proxy use. I would like to recommend portable Tor for this guide as it’s already set up, can be carried around on a thumbdrive and uses the Tor network to proxify you. Tor by itself is complicated enough for me not to want to explain it at all, but rest assured you can find plenty of info about it on their download site.

Go to WhatismyIP.com and it will inform you of your IP of course.

I am going to assume you are using my browser of choice, Firefox, for the rest of this tutorial, but just understand that you set up proxy values in Internet Explorer through “Tools”>”Internet Options”>”Connections”>”Lan Settings”.

Open up Firefox, click on “Tools”>”Options” then click on the tabs (it may be under “general” or “advanced” depending on the version) until you see “Connection Settings”. Click on the “Connection Settings” button and you should see a few settings to choose from. 1. Direct Connection to the Internet 2. Auto-Detect proxy Settings for this Network and the real winner 3. Manual Proxy Configuration.

Proxy setup in firefox

Select the third option and the options beneath will light up and become editable. In the first box labeled “HTTP Proxy:” Enter in 127.0.0.1 and port 8118 then hit “OK” Now run Portable Tor. Once portable Tor is connected and running try going to WhatismyIP.com again and see the difference. If it’s still the same than something went wrong, go back and try again. When you get tired of browsing through Tor you can go back into the settings again and change the connection back to number 1. Direct Connection to the Internet and click OK again. You will now be back to normal.

There are thousands of proxies available online some free, some pay. I won’t list any here, but a quick search on goo…er...Ixquick.com should get you the info you want right away. All you need to use the public proxies is change the 127.0.0.1 with their IP address and change the port with their port number. When you see their IP it may be listed as something like “64.15.0.0:80″ well the IP is the 64.15.0.0 and the port is the 80. That’s what the “:” designates. The default proxy port is 8080 port 80 is the default HTTP port, or the one which websites are served to and through.

Now my Internet ninjas, go forth and be peaceful. try not to do anything that you need a proxy to hide behind and try not to get fired for using the Internet for personal reasons. One more good idea is not to access anything personal through a proxy, you never know who runs the proxy after all.

Dr. Albrecht will head U.S. media relations for Ixquick.com. Ixquick bills its self as the worlds most privacy friendly search engine.

Dr. Albrecht has a decade of experience as a researcher, activist, and media commentator. She is best known for her work on privacy issues associated with RFID and retail data collection. Dr. Albrecht is co-author of the book “Spy Chips,” has a daily, syndicated talk radio show, and has written articles for Scientific American and the Denver University Law Review.

I’m excited to be working with Ixquick because I’m a huge fan of their
product,” said Albrecht. “Ixquick.com guarantees to delete all search
data so it can’t be abused by Big Brother bureaucrats and snoopy
marketers. I’ve been using Ixquick as my own search engine for months,
and I can’t wait to tell others who care about privacy as much as I
do.”

While checking out news at the Earth Times. I came across a rather interesting article regarding a Dutch Search Engine, IxQuick, The article talks about it being the first company to get the European Privacy Certificate. Then something caught my eye. Here is the excerpt:

“Just ten days ago a New York court ordered YouTube to transfer data it had stored, to Viacom. This incident only confirms what IxQuick has been saying for a long time – only erasing data can guarantee privacy.”

Well, because of the terabytes of data that flow across the internet at any given moment its no wonder that I had somehow missed this particular article:

Court Orders YouTube to Give Viacom Video Logs

One of the ironies of the IxQuick article was that it mentioned that the YouTube had been ordered to transfer its data ten days ago which would make it the 4th of July, Independence Day!

Anyway, both articles are well worth reading as they pertain to the privacy issues that we must confront on a daily basis. The way things are going privacy is quickly becoming a thing of the past and subject to more and more government intervention. Soon we will have one big Government Police State similar or greater than the old German Stasi!

As for IxQuick I have already added it to my Firefox list of search engines.

Dutch search engine wins first Euro-privacy award – Feature
Amsterdam – Dutch search engine IxQuick Monday became the first company to receive the newly-established European Privacy Certificate. The award, expected to become an important instrument in privacy and data protection legislation, was given to IxQuick by the European watchdog for data protection in Kiel, Germany. More…
