Daylight savings time sucks… I always hate the weekend of the time change because I have a hell of a time adjusting to it every year.

Friday started off pretty bad when R called me and I had to go to J1’s school to pick her up as she was complaining of stomach pains. Not sure what it was, although part of me thinks she wanted a mental health day. Saturday R’s brother and family arrived and the kids had a good time playing a trick-or-treating.

Sunday after the cousins left I took J1 to a birthday party where I discovered that in the community that J1 attends school I am a very young father… Generally 15 years younger. It became very evident when I was jumping on the bouncy houses with J1 and the other dads looking at me like I was insane. What bunch of old farts.

Last night J2 was having a rough time because I forgot to turn on her humidifier… She repaid me by vomiting all over me and staying up till 1am. Good thing she is cute

Some days your children will do thing that make you ask yourself why the fuck you had children at all. Yesterday was one of those days. J1 had a field trip and apparently on the bus ride to the event something happened and she bit another child on the face.

What the fuck?

So because of this we are pulling her out of her preschool program, which breaks my heart because I think the program is really good for her, but if she can’t control her behavior it becomes an issue. She’s also losing out on some activities we had planned for the weekend… And the most troubling part of this is that she appears really disconnected from the whole thing… While R and I were talking to her she asks when she can sign up for swim lessons.

What am I suppose to do to fix this?

Four days into my US holiday I was leaving the quiet surroundings of Newport and heading to New York with three of the lads. The main purpose of the trip was to attend All Points West, a music festival held in Liberty State Park in New Jersey. Another cause for excitement was the fact that this was going to be my first visit to NY. It’s kinda weird going to a festival on your J1, it’s like and experience within an experience. Usually I’ve had to settle for festivals when a trip abroad was not feasible for whatever reason.

The festival was a three day event without camping facilities which suited us, as it enabled us to stay with friends in Queens and so soak up more of New York. We eventually left Queens on Friday with a ridiculous amount of alcohol in our system for roughly 2.30pm(we’d been informed there was a 7 drink limit in the festival and so planned accordingly). I’m not usually one for being drunk at gigs but when on your J1….

 Anyway as it turned out the rain was so torrential that it sobered us all up just as Vampire Weekend took to the main stage. It seems fitting that the only wet and miserable day was by far the best of the weekend. After VW played an enjoyable set (I’m not a huge fan) we made sure we had a prime location for the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s, one of the bands I was most excited about. The New York based trio proved to be the highlight of the weekend. A typically frantic performance by lead singer Karen O coupled with excellent sound and crowd-pleasing set-list blew everyone away…it even stopped raining!

We hung a little further back for Jay-Z, who to his credit put on a very entertaining show. It was sickening for me that the Beastie Boyshad to pull out, the had been the main pull factor for me. Jay-Z opened with a tribute to the trio in the form of “No Sleep ‘Till Brooklyn” which ran perfectly into his big hit, “Brooklyn, We Go Hard”. During his show I observed that’ it’s near impossible for a white man to dance to rap without looking like he’s trying to be black, and that’s fine when you’re clubbing in Havana’s, but when your in Jersey City it’s a little disconcerting.

The second best act of the festival also came on the Friday in the form of electro/house duo MSTRKRFT. I’d never listened to them before and had barely heard of them but their performance ranks as my favourite dance gig to date.

The sun came out for Saturday. With less necessities on our “to-see list” we made sure we were in on time to catch Arctic Monkeys. Playing songs off their new Humbug album the indie outfit showed a marked progression in both sound and stage presence from their early days. They also treated the crowd to old favourites like Flourescent Adolescent and View from the Afternoon. Our next priority was Canadian dance act Crystal Castles. The duo fronted by eccentric and downright sexy singer Alice Glass had the crowd fixated with their loud and aggressive sound as well as Alice’s erratic shouting. unfortunately we had to miss the end of CC to catch Tool. The Californian rockers were their usual loud selves and played with precision even if their performance was lacking in imagination.

unforseen delays on Sunday resulted in us missing The Gaslight Anthem and We Are Scientists, the former a band I’d love to see live as I’m just getting into them, the latter I’ve already seen but would have enjoyed another show. Thankfully we were in time for Mogwai,one of my favourite bands. Some onstage disagreement and a more limited set rendered their performance less enjoyable than their show in Dublin earlier this year, but I still savoured the 16 minute classic Mogwai Fear Satan. As with the two previous nights the festivities were played out by a dance act, a great idea for any festival in my opinion. Legendary French DJ Etienne de Crecy drew the festival to a close with an old-school electro set and a dazzling light show.

Each night ended with a ferry back to New York and the most fantastic view of the Manhattan skyline at night, an experience almost as enjoyable as all the music slapped together.

An essential part of the Irish college experience is the J1. 3 months working in The USA and doing your utmost to tarnish the good reputation of the Irish over there. Having spent 3 months last summer in sunny Vancouver on the West coast of Canada, I felt I had done the whole J1 thing. Ok, so it wasn’t the USA but it was the closest thing and was the best summer of my life. As a firm believer of moving on to new things and new experiences, I desperately searched for a companion this summer to tackle eastern Europe on an inter-railing holiday. Alas, my search proved in vain as literally all of my friends were hell-bent on a J1 summer. Resigned to the fact that it was either the US or Ireland, I agreed to go to Newport, Rhode Island for 5 weeks at the end of summer.

Having been home a week and a half my only regret is that I didn’t go for the whole summer. The 5 weeks in the east coast of America were truly amazing. Hampered by the fact that my friends and I fell just short of the legal drinking age, we rarely opted for the nightclubs and bars of the small seaside town, choosing instead to bring the fun to us.

As a small army of students had travelled form Cork to Newport and all had made friends with co-workers etc. we were guaranteed a decent crowd at any party thrown. Newport is notorious for its’ strict enforcement of noise regulations and sure enough by the time I arrived in late July my housemates had already been smacked with a hefty fine, for a house party that sounds nothing short of epic. In my brief encounters with the Newport Police force they did seem somewhat power-crazy. As big fish in a small pond they relished any opportunity to abuse the authority they had.

For me it was convenient arriving late in the summer. By then some of my friends had quit working so my days weren’t spent sleeping in until 5 when the workers stumbled home from “work”. Also by that stage my trusty companions had developed an arrangement with the nearest liquor store, every night a sizeable order of Natural Ice beer and Castillo rum was put in and delivered right to our door step. One shudders to think of the consequences such a system would have in this part of the world! A strobe light had also been procured and was stored in our basement. Ah the basement, it sounds a convenient addition to any house…it is not. The place had a rather uninviting oder, was inhabited by damp couches and mattresses and had the general ambiance of a homeless shelter. Be that as it may, when the right crowd was there and we were all suitably intoxicated it was the perfect location for a homemade rave and marathon sessions of landmines.

Drinking games are all the rage over there. The only drinking game we’re accustomed to is; down the shoulder in an ally and get into the club before it kicks in. Adapting to local culture and customs, we soon became beer-pong and landmines enthusiasts. Having stayed in Boston with a group of friends on one particular weekend we were happy to repay the favour late in the summer.

Their arrival coincided perfectly with the surprise visit of our friends who were on a road trip across the east coast and the end of employment of my housemates. With our house bursting at the seems and the summer drawing to a close our J1 began to resemble a 6th year holiday. Everyday spent on the beach, the drinking began around 5/6 and we had to outdo the previous nights consumption; “right lads, tonight we’re going for 210 cans…oh Jesus!” Before we knew it, twas time to pack our stuff and head back to Boston for one last blow out before catching our plane home.

Stand out memories; New York, All Points West, family meals at 20 Narragansett Ave. The melting heat of Ann street, The comfort of Spring st, the late-night banter at Via Via Pizza, free petty-cabs with Bobby, moving renditions of Imogen Heap, epic barbeques, boozer on the beach, an intense game of beer-pong culminating in a 2-story drop an almost broken ankle justified by seriously flawed logic, shitfaced at dockside on Sunday nights, talking shite to girls in Boston, drinking even more than usual in Boston, massive sing-song in Boston, cycling home from clubbing hammered, Hardy Bucks, little Calcutta/Slumdog Millionaire, pushing the big blue van.

Not bad for only 1/3 of a J1!
