Ich bin heute trotz akuten Geldmangel mit ins Kino gegangen um die Twilight Vortsetzung New Moon zu sehen. Dank meines Schülerausweises war es dann doch günstiger. Wobei sich auch der normale Preis gelohnt hätte.

Zum Inhalt werde ich natürlich nichts sagen. Die die das Buch gelesen haben werden ihn kennen und der Rest muss ihn sich anschauen. Es lohnt sich. Für die die das Buch gelesen haben kann ich nur sagen das die Umsetzung von Buch auf Film gelungen ist.

So und nun zum Grund warum ich überhaupt über den Film blogge wenn ich eh nichts verrate. Der Grund ist das hier:

Jack Black ist einfach nur der Hammer. Im gesamten Film läuft er, mit ein oder zwei Ausnahmen, mit nacktem Oberkörper rum und der ist einfach nur GEIL. Unsere gesamte Gruppe war einstimmig der Meinung das Jack geil ist und Edward nicht mithalten kann. Außerdem sind wir der Meinung das Bella blind, extrem blöd oder beides sein muss, wenn sie sich für Edward entscheidet.

Also Leute schaut euch den Film an. Es lohnt sich. Schon allein wegen Jack

Last night, my husband and I enjoyed the zany antics and fun music of “Shark Tale” on DVD.  Geared to older kids, the movie is still too mature for kiddo.

Vegetarian kids will love that Lenny the Shark (Jack Black) shares their outlook on life, and all kids can benefit from this movie’s message about the importance of being true to yourself and accepting those you love.

You may want to talk to your kids about how this movie challenges stereotypes (with a vegetarian Great White shark) and how it perpetuates them (portraying “Italian-American” sharks as mobsters).   Also, consider visiting PETA’s FishingHurts.com to get the inside scoop on what shark behavior featured in the film is cartoon fiction and what’s based on reality.

I’ve been watching High Fidelity today.

(Quick summary for those who haven’t seen it, lifted straight from wiki because I’m lazy… The plot of High Fidelity centers on Rob Gordon (John Cusack), a self-confessed audiophile whose flair for understanding women is less than par for the course. After getting dumped by his current girlfriend, Laura (Iben Hjejle), he decides to look up some of his old flames in an attempt to figure out what he keeps doing wrong in his relationships.

He spends his days at his record store, Championship Vinyl, where he holds court over the customers that drift through. Helping Rob in his task of musical elitism are Dick (Todd Louiso) and Barry (Jack Black), the “musical moron twins,” as he refers to them. Armed with an encyclopedic knowledge of all things musical, they compile “top five” lists for every conceivable occasion, openly mock the ignorance of their customers, and, every so often, actually sell a few records.)

While I’m not really a John Cusack fan, and the brief yet irritating appearances of Catherine Zeta Jones do nothing for me, I still really enjoy this movie and it’s because of all the record store scenes. I love the mockery and open hostility that Barry (Jack Black) displays towards their customers and how he refuses to sell records to those he deems unworthy. It’s mean and elitist but also bloody hilarious.

While I like the whole movie, the part I’m always hanging out for when I watch it is the record launch at the end, an event that Barry and his new band muscle in on, despite Rob begging them not to participate, fearing that they’ll be awful and everyone will leave. Barry turns up looking all snappy in a suit and they immediately launch into a great cover of Marvin Gaye’s ‘Let’s Get It On’ and blow the crowd away. It’s a fantastic scene.

O que eu mais gosto nesse filme? A mania de fazer listas.

Top five things I miss about Laura:  1 - Sense of humor. Very dry, but it can also be warm and forgiving. And she’s got one of the best all time laughs in the history of all time laughs, she laughs with her entire body.  2-  she’s got character. Or at least she had character before the Ian nightmare. She’s loyal and honest, and she doesn’t even take it out on people when she’s having a bad day. That’s character. 3 – miss her smell, and the way she tastes. It’s a mystery of human chemistry and I don’t understand it, some people, as far as their senses are concerned, just feel like home. 4 – I really dig how she walks around. It’s like she doesn’t care how she looks or what she projects and it’s not that she doesn’t care it’s just, she’s not affected I guess, and that gives her grace. And 5; she does this thing in bed when she can’t get to sleep, she kinda half moans and then rubs her feet together an equal number of times… it just kills me. Believe me, I mean, I could do a top five things about her that drive me crazy but it’s just your garden variety women you know, schizo stuff and that’s the kind of thing that got me here.

Or was I miserable because I listened to pop music?

I have been working with Vanda North on her Mind Chi project – you will hear a lot more about this next year as there is significant media interest in the work that she and Richard Israel are doing.  https://mindchi.com/Mind_Chi_Home_Page.php  Without going into details about my own circumstances I have learnt to appreciate a powerful lesson.  Being a fairly action orientated person, when I have needed to change my state I have done something physical.  However, I have learnt that I can do this with thought alone. 

We have two mental Chi that chatter away in our heads, one mischievous Chi that will give us a hard time about all sorts of stuff and one good Chi.  The trouble is the mischievous Chi is more verbose, and extremely loud in comparison to the good Chi.  So based on a premise by Jack Black I have created my own virtual house where I can go to escape the bad Chi and hang out more with good Chi. 

So far I have six rooms in my house:  I enter my house through a fairy door.  It is green and is in my back garden half way up the back wall, situated among the climbing clematis and wisteria. 

The first room is the amphitheatre which is my quiet place.  Some people think this is an oxymoron – so let me explain.  I sit at the top of the pure white amphitheatre with a cobalt blue sky surround and all the odd thoughts that come and go through my head, still do.  I hear them but because I am so far away from the stage on which they are acting, I cannot engage and whilst the mischievous Chi still witters it can no longer engage with my conscience thought.

The second is the car lot.  Here I can park all the problematic thoughts that I can’t solve right now.  The parking lot allows me to leave any problem for a short time yet I know I can return to it later when the parking ticket has run out. 

The third and probably most important room is the spare bedroom.  This is where I can put to bed the problems I have no control over, but worry me none the less.  Like all problem children, there is a good chance they will challenge the curfew but it is easier to remain resolute when you have decided the curfew in the first place.  Then back to bed they go.

The fourth room is the play pen.  This is where I go when I can’t sleep at night.  It is an empyreal place where I can be as creative as I like.  At the moment I use it for the creative writing I don’t seem to get done during the day.

My fifth room is the only one I have lifted from Jack Black’s ideology.  This is because I cannot create anything that better resembles where I need to be.  This is the energiser room.  Sometimes I need to go here just to get myself started – especially if I have been procrastinating over an issue for too long a time.

And finally, my sixth and favourite room is the autumn room.  I love autumn.  It is my most favourite time of year.  Here I can look at the colours and feel warmth kissing my cheeks, my neck and my lips.  I can scuff the scruffy leaves on the floor; I can pick up conkers and peel horse chestnuts, kick over acorns and gaze at red berries galore.  This place brings a smile to my face.  I love it. I am really happy here.

So, Brutal Legend came out and it was awesome.  For those of you who don’t know, it stars ack Black as a roadie who goes back in time to a world right off a metal album cover where music is the most powerful weapon. It also features the voices of Ozzy, Lemmy, and other metal legends.

I played it and I beat it and it took me about 12 hours to do so on the normal difficulty.  I spent a lot of time doing side missions, stopping to defend my metal head peeps, and hunting with one of the gay guys from The Sara Silverman Program (I know he’s not really gay, and I think he’s hilarious).

But then I get to the multiplayer.  And before I really get into my review of the multiplayer, let me sum up a letter Tim Schafer released himself on the Double Fine website:  Brutal Legend is NOT a RTS game.  It’s an adventure/action/hack and slash game with RTS elements to enhance your gaming experience.  You should use double team attacks A LOT (an attack you can use when you’re near one of your own units), and be very aggressive with your troops.  If you play the defense, you will lose.  Also noted by the Schafe, you really shouldn’t split up your army.  Travel with your large group of troops and get into the thick of the battles.

Alright…I’ve seen a lot of things before, and I love Tim Schafer’s creativity and his impressive catalogue of work, but this is a little weird.  How many times do we see someone release an open letter to gamers letting us know that we might be playing his game wrong?  That would be like J. D. Salinger responding to everyone calling Holden Caulfield a masochist and telling them that they missed the point and the book is really about what it means to be human.  Who is really going to care?  If that’s how you read it, that’s how you read it.  And if you play Brutal Legend online like an RTS, then that’s how you play it.  Sorry, Tim, but honestly, if you didn’t want people to play your game like an RTS, then you shouldn’t have made it so easy to do so.

In fact, “easy to do so” might not be the correct phrase here…it’s more like “essential.”  Honestly, I suck at RTS games, and when I heard Brutal Legend was an RTS as far as multiplayer goes, it made me shy away.  Running through a rock and roll world, killing metallic-tusked mammoths and riding half motorcycle/half boars sounded awesome, but I HATE playing RTS games online (see my blog next week on RTS for the reason why).

But I beat the game, so I had to go online.  Logically it was the next step.  So, I go through what is probably the BEST START MENU IN VIDEO GAME HISTORY and I find multiplayer.

To my relief there is a practice mode where you can play against the computer.  I start on easy, I win.  I move up to normal and win.  I try the “Kinda Brutal” difficulty, and I clean house.  I try on Brutal, and I win.  Maybe, just maybe, I’ve finally found an RTS with which I can contend online…?

No.  As of today, my record is 0-2, and it should have been 0-3, but my system…um…crashed?  Sure, that’s what happened…right before my stage was torn down.   Sorry, whoever I was playing against.  You deserved that win.

So, let’s go over what Schaffer said.  Does it pay off to be in the thick of the battle?  Of course.  Your avatar has the ability to power up your troops, debuff your enemies, drop Zeppelins, and melt faces.  Also, the double team attacks are awesome…if you’re the computer.  Honestly, I can never seem to get many solid results from some of these attacks.  Some are great, and I use them all the time, but attacks like the mosh pit and the Razor Girl attacks seem like they should be doing more even to the most basic opponents.  But overall, yes, it does pay to drop into the battle, fight off the other avatar, and drop a few riffs to blow some cats up.

Does it pay to keep your army together?  Well, yeah, because you’re going to need all the support you can get.  Also, if you’re playing as the Tainted Coil, some characters get bonuses just by being around their teammates.  But, wait a second, who is that attacking my merch booth (the BL equivalent of a gold mine or other resource bay)?  Oh!  Look!  The AI has let one set of its troops move away from the main battle, and they’re attacking my shit!

Ok, let’s talk about this, because Tim Schafer said we were playing this game wrong and looking at it all wrong and that we’re not supposed to split up our troops and we’re not supposed to play this like an RTS!!!!!!  So WHAT THE F!?  Why is your AI programmed to split the f up and attack my shit on two fronts?  Ok, I know, it’s not a big deal.  I just flew over there and knocked those guys out, but that’s not the point.  If you don’t want this to be an RTS game, you really shouldn’t be programming the AI to play it like one.  Basically, you’re forcing people to play it the way you didn’t want them to.

.

Also, how are you encouraging people to keep all their troops together?  Well, for the Tainted Coil, SOME troops get bonuses for being together in a large group, and I believe some other units function the same way in other factions, but the truth is, to win this game, you need to split up.  It is ESSENTIAL to play this like an RTS.

.

This brings up the question: could anything have been done to make this game less like an RTS?  Yes.  How’s about every time you drop into battle, your troops get a little attack bonus?  I know, there are solo’s you can play to do this, but it should just be inherent to the situation; you show up, your guys fight better. If this was the case, I’d be on the ground A LOT more.

.

Also, my car doesn’t fire any bullets or have any turbo like in the single player game.  Why not?  If you’re going to keep it in the multiplayer mode, make it worth my while.  Why would anyone use the car when you can fly around much faster?  I’m never on the ground long enough to make it matter that I drive around because I’m flying all over the place trying to see what the enemy is doing and where they’re going.

That’s another thing.  Why no map?  Maybe my dots are yellow, theirs are red, and then I won’t have to fly the fuck all over the place just to see where people are going.  That would let me stay on the ground a lot more and enjoy the battle.

.

He is defiantly right about one thing, you NEED to play offensively.  If you don’t, you’re going to reach your very low maximum amount of units early or you simply won’t be able to get enough fans to buy anything that can defend against an army that is constantly killing off its lower level units and replacing them with the bigger badder troops.

.

I got my ass kicked by people I’m sure kick a lot of people’s asses at RTS games.  That’s what really sucks.  Didn’t they read the letter?!  No, and why would they?  The only people who probably read the letter are people like me who got their asses kicked and then went online to see what they did wrong.  And what do they get?  Some bad advice from the man himself.  Ok, maybe it’s not all bad, but you FOR SURE have to split up your troops, and you FOR SURE have to play it like an RTS.  Maybe it’s not your standard RTS, but it is, very much, rooted in the RTS vein of gaming.

Mr. Schafer still made an amazing game, no matter what kind of game it is.  It is fun, it is imaginative, and it’s full of energy that a lot of games lack.  If you don’t like RTS, stay away from the online play, but still try to enjoy the single player mode.  It’s worth your money.

(After I wrote this review I went back and I tried to find all the hidden goodies in the single player world.  I ran into even more trouble.  The world is very hilly and rugged.  It wouldn’t be an issue if I could just put a marker somewhere in the world and travel to that spot, but in the game you can only put a marker on places you’ve already uncovered and other missions.  Since it’s so easy to get turned around, since there’s no on screen map, and since you don’t even have a compass, you have to look at your map at least 34 times just to get to the simplest of places.  This game has it’s flaws for certain.)

I give it a B-.  The creativity, the energy, the acting, and the art is that good.  But come on!  You can’t give me a compass?!

Here’s another duo, Tenacious D, performing “Explosivo” in 1998 on what looks like a Comedy Central show.  And did the creators of Hancock rip off his get-up from Jack Black’s accessories here?  Who’s to say?

Next up is Bauhaus performing “Stigmata Martyr”.  Not sure what year this was filmed or how long the band had been together at this point, but it looks like an early capture.  Quality is a bit choppy, but a gem nonetheless.

And here’s my favorite “early performance” on Youtube - Steely Dan performing “Reelin’ in the Years” sometime in the early 70’s.  The video reads it was in 1978, but apparently that’s when this performance aired and not when it was filmed.  By 1978, Steely Dan had become strictly a “studio band”  but this video showcases their live capabilities. 

And those are my selections for now.  One day, I’m sure I’ll stumble upon some early videos of Pixies or Wilco and will have to add them to the list.  Until then, enjoy these selections hand-picked for your viewing pleasure.

Hoje é dia de pré-estréia da película, e é claro que nossa equipe vai estar lá.

Para este feriado a dica da semana é especial, se preparem para filas, só  na rede cinemarck, mais de 124.980 ingressos da pré-estréia fora vendido. Somando todas redes do Brasil foram vendidos 297.600 mil ingressos, todos antecipados!

Mas não é só por aqui que os vampiros enchem os cinéfilos de expectativa. De acordo com o Fandango, um dos sites de venda de ingressos mais populares dos Estados Unidos, “Lua nova” é o filme de maior arrecadação em pré-venda desde sua fundação, em 2000. As vendas antecipadas dos ingressos desbancaram grandes produções como o terceiro episódio de “Guerra nas estrelas”, “Harry Potter e o enigma do príncipe”, “Batman – o cavaleiro das trevas” e do próprio “Crepúsculo”.

O marketing do filme foi um pouco diferente, pois como podemos ver, os fãs queriam informação sobre o filme todo dia. Apesar desta última semana ter sido massivo, já alguns meses em todos tipos de mídia se vê os rostos dos trio protagonista de Lua nova, quando você foi na banca de jornal e não viu a cara do Robert?

Lack of time and serious sleep deprivation have prevented me from updating with my aforementioned “exciting” sentence diagramming series and studied take on career anxiety.

Wonk, wonk, wonk…laaame.

But because I know that flashy moving pictures get people’s attention, I’m going to, once again, pull a shameless lazy post over your eyes and present a video that I find confusing, terrifying, and beautiful. It’s  like a blend of a Dr. Seuss drug hallucination and an 80s workout with all the elegance of  running underwater. Whoa.

So, as Jack Black George Washington would say, “Keep your looking balls on the picture radio and prepare to get your nuts smashed!”

Chi non sente la mancanza delle VHS?  Bè, le videocassette appartengono al nostro passato ma con tutte le loro piccole scomodità rendevano la visione di un film un’ esperienza dall’esito incerto e unico. Essì perchè ,oltre all’obbligo di riavvolgere il nastro,  la temibile smagnetizzazione era sempre in agguato e periodicamente perdevamo i pezzi pregiati delle nostre collezioni vintage. Ma a nessuno è mai venuto in mente di sostituire i vecchi nastri rovinati con dei piccoli remake self-made, idea che invece è venuta ai protagonisti di Be Kind Rewind che fanno del maroccamento un’ arte.

Non a caso il regista è un certo Gondry (chettelodicoafare)che ha fatto della creatività il motivo dominante dei suoi film (vedi anche L’Arte del Sogno) e della sua esistenza e anche qui nel rifacimento di piccoli e grandi capolavori del cinema da sfogo a tutto il suo estro. E allora anche noi ci possiamo sentire dei piccoli registi e ,realizzando improbabili effetti scenici, sfidare le mega produzioni hollywodiane, perchè no?!

Brütal Legend é um jogo de ação em terceira pessoa que faz uma paródia do universo do Heavy Metal colocando o jogador na pele do “roadie”  de uma banda famosa, Eddie Riggs, o título traz grandes nomes do cinema e da música, como Jack Black, Lemmy Kilmister (vocalista da banda Motörhead) e Rob Halford (vocalista da banda Judas Priest) e o grande Ozzy Osbourne  que dublam alguns dos personagens do game.
A história do Game começa quando Eddie Riggs(Dublado por Jack Black) se machuca, quando afinava sua guitarra, e o seu sangue escorre ate a fivela “amaldiçoada” de seu cinto, a fivela ganha vida e transforma-se em um monstro terrivel que leva Riggs aparentemente para o céu, aonde as muralhas são feitas de milhares de amplificadores empilhados, aonde pode-se encontrar guitarras gigantescas enterradas no chão, e cada vilão ou herói parece ter sido retirado diretamente de clipes dos grandes clássicos do Metal.
Em Brütal Legend ação não falta, seja detonando demônios dirigindo o grande “Deuce” , detonando os seus inimigos com um Machado de dar inveja a alguns vikings ou simplismente “derretendo” os seus inimigos através dos Bravos solos de Eddie na sua fiel Gibson Flying V  Clementine. Alias como se usa um solo para derrotar seus inimigos?? Simples no jogo ao realizar o solo a uma espécie de Mini-game que no qual você deve apertar cada uma das notas nas sequências certas para conquistar os poderes oferecidos pela guitarra como disparar raios ou “derreter” o rosto de seu inimigo.

Eddie, Ophelia no Deuce

Falando em “Deuce” o carro destruidor de Eddie ele é a melhor forma de se percorrer o mapa e também destruir alguns monstros pelo caminho, pois ele pode receber upgrades como lança-chamas e mais alguns que o tornam mais violento do que ja é, apesar de a ação ser de grande referência no game a história é o ponto mais atraente, pois ela é cheia de mudanças repentinas o que nos faz ficar travado muitas horas so pra saber oque vai acontecer um pequeno exemplo de como é a história:

“Logo no início da trama, quando Eddie resolve ajudar a bela Ophelia e o estereotipado Lars — que, para todos o efeitos, poderia muito bem ser uma caricatura do Dave Mustaine —, a missão é resgatar “headbangers” que vem sendo explorados para quebrar pedras em uma mina.
Com um discurso que parece retirado de uma cena perdida de “Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny”, Eddie convence os pobres e explorados “bangers” de que eles estão sendo explorados; de que deveriam sim bater as cabeças, mas não para quebrar pedras, e sim para agitar ao som do bom e velho heavy metal.
Em um segundo momento, Ophelia jaz moribunda, e apenas um curandeiro conhecido como Kill Master pode fazer alguma coisa. Acontece que o curandeiro não é ninguém senão o inconfundível Lemmy Kilmister, do Motörhead (sim, por isso o trocadilho com Kill Master). Mas, para salvar a pobre Ophelia, Jack precisa sair à cata da teia de uma aranha metálica, o que permitiria ao Kill Master tocar um som ainda mais pesado.” (trecho retirado do site Baijaki jogos)

Brütal Legend é realmente uma obra, pois além da grande história e do grande elemento ação temos as trilhas musicais que nos trazem grandes musicas jamais esquecidas das bandas Black Sabbath, Motörhead e Judas Priest. Emperor, Manowar, Def Leppard e SlayerBlack Sabbath, Motörhead e Judas Priest. Emperor, Manowar, Def Leppard e Slayer entre outras (lista de bandas e musicas).
Ah e claro não posso esquecer de falar que o jogo com toda certeza não seria o mesmo se não tivesse como dublador de Eddie  Riggs Jack Black (que realmente destroi *-*)

Due cavernicoli, scacciati dal proprio villaggio, si imbattono in due fratelli: Caino e Abele.

Chi ci avrebbe scommesso ? E invece Anno uno, funziona, eccome. Sarà per la capacità dietro la macchina da presa di un buon artigiano della commedia, Harold Ramis, regista di Ricomincio da capo e qui anche sceneggiatore; sarà per il produttore, Judd Apatow, una vera conferma nel panorama comico americano (sono suoi anche Molto incinta e il recente Funny People); sarà perché quando si trova una buona coppia in una commedia, il più è fatto. E Jack Black e Michael Cera fanno scintille. Sarà quel che sarà ma Anno uno funziona, molto più e molto meglio di tanti innocui, prevedibili film demenziali. E funziona forse perché dal filone demenziale e volgarissimo dei vari Sex Movie, Epic Movie etc, il film di Ramis prende le distanze. E’ vero: non manca la volgarità e non saranno in pochi a storcere il naso vedendo tirati in ballo – con esiti divertentissimi – Caino, Abele e Abramo e Isacco, ma il tono è bonario, tutt’altro che insultante o gratuitamente offensivo come tanti film proprio del filone. Apatow e soci si divertono un sacco, e fanno anche divertire un sacco con gag che non brilleranno per finezza ma rappresentano anche il repertorio classico della comicità. Si ride un po’ di tutto, ma – è questo è uno degli elementi di successo dei film targati Apatow – soprattutto con tutti. Si ride con ingredienti semplici: bisogni corporali, peti; una sequenza dissacrante ma simpaticissima sulla nascita della circoncisione presso gli Ebrei, una seconda parte, giocata tutta su doppi e tripli sensi, ambientata invece a Sodoma. L’intreccio, solo apparentemente anarchico, in realtà ben controllato dagli sceneggiatori, è da tipica commedia degli equivoci in cui ha libero sfogo il talento e la fisicità di Black, ben accompagnato da un allampanato Michael Cera; il ritmo non manca così come appaiono efficaci i caratteristi e le ‘spalle’, primo fra tutti David Cross nei panni di un folle Caino. Una buona commedia, positiva e un po’ matta, un altro tassello in più dell’Apatow-pensiero. Si ride tra amici; si ride perché si è amici. Vedere il finale per credere. E ridere.

I’m going to try to make this a quick review tonight. It’s not because I don’t care enough about the D: on the contrary, I happen to think they’re one of the funniest musical acts in history and one of the best satirists when it comes to the pomposity of rock music. Jack Black’s atrociously charismatic lyricism combined with Kyle Gass’s virtuoso guitar playing makes for comedy that happens to be musically accomplished to boot. I’m just going to make this short because this is the kind of movie where you already know if you’re going to like it. It’s a musical comedy that is rock-oriented and Jack Black oriented. If you like the things they did on the HBO show or their first album, you get more of the same, and if you didn’t, then you’re probably very much in the dark as to why any of this is terribly funny.

We learn here the origins of the D, a rock duo that came together when rock prodigy Jack meets older, more experience guitar player Kyle busking one day and admires his handiwork. Kyle at first is annoyed by this nobody who has seriously latched onto him, but he grows a fondness for the plucky kid, and eventually they learn to rock wonderfully together. They form a bond and a friendship that will carry on through the coming years, and their music perfectly represents this new-found camaraderie. But they need something special to break into the big time, something that will set them apart from the millions of other bands who play open mics nights as their regular gigs. An opportunity appears from a mysterious store owner, who lets them in on The Pick of Destiny, a magical pick made from the horn of the Devil that will allow for any guitarist to play on an entirely different level. The pick is being held at a rock and roll museum, nobody at the museum knowing its true power, and the two hatch a plan to take it from under everyone’s noses. Along the way, their mental alacrity, their physical prowess, and even their friendship will be tested, because the road to the Pick of Destiny is littered with obstacles. But with the assistance of their only fan, Lee, can they avoid death or a break-up and become rock heroes?

It’s a pretty funny flick that really got dropped by fans and casual moviegoers alike when it came out, probably due to all the other Holiday blockbusters edging it out at the time, not to mention the fact that their last album was five years prior, and they were striking while the iron was freezing cold. But still, all things considered, it’s a good comedy. The jokes are pretty strong, most of them involving how pompous they are in the face of their total obscurity and the fact that rock music is so full of shit sometimes. They love to use the idea that you can rock SO HARD that you can change the physical properties of objects, like “I’m gonna ROCK your face off!” or “I’m gonna kill him with ROCK!” like it’s fucking kryptonite. Rock is just as bogus and self-important here as in the real world, and the gags do a good job of representing that. And while there are a few slow scenes that don’t pan out comically, the overall feel is still very positive, especially in the songs that move this musical along. They’re all for the most part, really good songs, well-made and catchy with all the tasty riffage that we expect from Tenacious D. The songs are a little too attached to the movie, sometimes, and can’t really live very long on their own, but as long as you’ve seen the movie once, you can at least cope with it and enjoy without living in total confusion. My favorite song? A little track called Master Exploder where Jack Black actually blows a guy’s head off with his ROCK!

Kyle and Jack have a good rapport together that translates well onto the screen. A big draw to this is their seemingly ad-libbed humor is that they actually like each other, which seems to be mostly a fleeting thing in comedic pair-ups these days. They play well off of one another, especially in the latter half of the movie where they interact more with one another. Like real friends, they just feel right together, and there’s no amount of coaching you can do to get as close and as natural with someone else as you can see with these two. It’s a real buddy duo for a really good buddy adventure movie. There’s action, suspense, lots of ganja, cameos that range from the expected (Dave Grohl) to the surprising (Ben Stiller) to the completely unexpected (Tim Robbins???) that are all pretty good. Don’t be surprised if you’re not a fan of the D to find this movie a little lacking, but even for the uninitiated, I think you can easily find something to laugh at here. Check it out, but don’t expect anything as epic as what you find on the cover and the artwork. It’s just a good-natured comedy with a great sense of humor that will be remembered for its financial failure but should be remembered for its charismatic leads and for fun that really delivers. I give Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny 7 1/2 ROCKED TO DEATH CORPSES out of 10.

In “Tropic Thunder,” a band of movie stars, filming what appears to parody Francis Coppola’s “Apocalypse Now,” are dropped in the middle of the jungle by their director in attempt to make the actors live out the plot line, thus bringing out their most creative acting. The characters are fictional celebrities within the movie, and they serve as satirical forms of behind the scenes celebrity culture. Chip Sullivan, a DreamWorks spokesman, said the movie was “an R-rated comedy that satirizes Hollywood and its excesses and makes its point by featuring inappropriate and over-the-top characters in ridiculous situations” (Wynter). Twentieth century celebrity culture dissects how the idea of fame has become an obsession, and how the entity of “celebrity” is a manufactured product. “Tropic Thunder” satirizes the actions of the movie-making industry and its players. Here’s proof in the official trailer:

First, “Tropic Thunder” satirizes fame and celebrity culture, and how they are portrayed within the media. “Tropic Thunder” shows how the publicity industry “focuses attention on the worthy and unworthy alike” (Gamson 2). Tugg Speedman’s (Ben Stiller) career as an actor is on the decline. Throughout the film, there are references to his declining celebrity, and the need for the movie to do well or he may never work again. In a mock interview with Speedman from the movie, Tyra Banks: “You have no real family, you’re on the wrong side of forty, and you’re childless and alone. Someone close to you said ‘one more flop and its over’.” This is an attempt to focus on the unworthy within the public eye.

Second, “Tropic Thunder” satirizes the business of the movie making industry. “Power was in the hands of studios, which were firmly committed to a mass production system. Movie manufacturers adapted the star system to the industry’s needs” (Gamson 5). This is obvious within “Tropic Thunder,” the plot line calls for the kidnapping of Tugg Speedman by drug-traffickers for a one-hundred million dollar ransom, to be paid by his studio. Because his career is on the decline, and because major studios often see their ‘stars’ as commodities, products, or business investments, Les Grossman (Tom Cruise) the head of Speedman’s studio consider’s not paying the ransom and letting Speedman die. Here’s what happens first, followed by the dialogue:

Rick Peck: Now let me get this straight. You want me to let my client of 15 years, one of my best friends, die in the jungle alone, for some money and a G5?

Les Grossman: Yes

Rick Peck: A G5 airplane?

Les Grossman: Yes… and lots of money… playaaaa!

Obviously this is a stretch of what business policies made by major movie production companies may be concerning their clients/products, but it is satirical in that these conglomerates can ‘kill’ the career of any one of their stars at any minute if they believe it is a better decision for their business.

“In the Winter of 1969, an elite force of the US Army was sent on a top secret assignment in Southeast Vietnam. The objective: rescue Sgt. Four Leaf Tayback from a heavily guarded NVA Prison Camp. The mission was considered to be near-suicide. Of the ten men sent, four returned. Of those four, three wrote books about what happened. Of those three, two were published. And of those two, only one got a movie deal. This is the story of the men who attempted to make that movie.” Viewers can see that from the opening line of “Tropic Thunder,” they are in for a sarcastic and satirical representation of the movie-making process.

If house hunting has paid off, we will certainly find out soon. For now, we can simply point out how well can a Hollywood star sleep in his car.

BRUTAL LEGEND REVIEW

There are not a lot of times when you can say there’s no good comparison to a game. If media ages, then gaming is probably in its teens, or at least coming up to it, and there’s been sufficient enough time to feel out most genres in gaming. Brutal Legend isn’t a new genre, per se, but it’s highly original in its own right. Following Psychonauts and Grim Fandango is no easy task, and Tim Schafer may not exceed expectations, but he does exactly what he’s know to do; offers you something you haven’t seen before.

You play as Eddie Riggs, just a roadie, a guy not meant to be seen or heard from. What makes Eddie likeable is that he knows that, loves it, and realizes that people like him are needed to help make stars what they are.  Jack Black does the voice, and that’s either good or bad depending on how you feel about him. But it’s hard to imagine anyone else doing it with so much gusto or bravado for the lifestyle of a true metal lover. And don’t be fooled, he sells it well and that’s what this game is about. There’s a genuine love for the music and culture of heavy metal and Brutal Legend makes damned sure that you know the difference between nu metal, glam metal and the real stuff.

The voice acting all around though is quite good, which both helps pull off the story and the humor. The game is really a riot, so long as you’re in on a lot of the jokes, but even if you’re not you’d be hard up not to find at least something to laugh at. The game takes place in the past, in the Age of Metal, where Eddie Riggs is transported after a stage accident. The characters live and breathe this world while Eddie see’s it like one big rocking tour of hard metal, the juxtaposition is nice and carries the story on its own.

The game itself is a mixture of styles. It’s an action game, with some RTS elements during epic stage battles. There’s also a ton of driving around in the Deuce, Riggs’ vehicle that he can summon at any time with a sweet solo. You read that right, a solo.  The combat uses both ranged and melee action when you’re on the ground by way of an axe for close up and a guitar that shoots lighting for ranged combat. What else? The RTS side of things is rather simplistic, easy enough to follow for anyone that’s apprehensive about the genre, but maybe too shallow for anyone that plays them often. This is something that Brutal Legend suffers from, but more on that shortly.

While driving or traversing the lands on foot you’ll find all sorts of bad guys to fight, from simplistic porcupine ground urchins to roaming glam-rockers that need a good beat down to demonic wraiths and reapers. The world is filled with distinctive environments, filled with all things metal like cliffs of amps or metallic spider roots. There are some obvious nods to conventions here, but they pull it off extremely well never taking anything too seriously and feeling free to poke fun at itself.

While some missions are simple enough in the ‘get to this point and fight’ nature, they areas usually culminate with some type of escort missions, which are surprisingly fun, or the RTS battles that I mention. During those battles you’ll have a stage build from which you some recruits, and geysers which you’ll use to generate ‘fans’, the currency needed for new units. Of course there’s an opposing side sending troops over for you to fight, or trying to secure their own fan geysers. There’s not much in the way of true micromanagement, the game is just a step up in complexity than, say, Spore. It’s a nice deviation from the rest of the game, but it does make you wonder if they could have done more in the way of building your own buildings and having a more to choose from. If they ever do a sequel this is a must, because these over-simplified ways of doing things make it feel like a half-hearted gesture.

You’ll be pleased to know that you still can control Eddy up close in these battles, which helps make you feel a lot more involved. By the end of the game you’ll also have a handful of Solo’s that can help you in battle. These are easy enough to play, and can shift battle in seconds when used right. It’s a small mechanic but a solid one that’s both funny and helpful.

For those OCD gamers there’s a ton of stuff to collect, songs to unlock and upgrade and what have you. There’s also a fair share of secondary missions that aren’t anything new in these types of games, but they are nice distractions and unlock fire tributes so you can upgrade at the motor forge – an awesome place to see some wicked cameo action by Ozzy Osborne (seriously, he’s actually good). There is an annoyance here in the collecting though – without an online cheat map there’s virtually no damned way of keeping track of what you do collect and what you’re still missing. There’s never a map indicator of previous unlocks, and no hints. If you didn’t look into it, you’d likely miss them altogether, which is unfortunate. They don’t justify hunting around for hours, but if you do know where they are they can be a good reason to take a few minutes off your path to collect. Who doesn’t want more songs?

Brutal Legend doesn’t reinvent the wheel in anyway, but its puts some crazy spinners on and rolls over the guts of those who oppose. It’s unabashedly proud of what it is, a true homage and celebration of all things metal.  A great gateway into the metal genre and maybe even RTS or action games in general. Brutal Legend doesn’t quite succeed in every area better than others before it, but what it does is make sure that no one else has made a game quite like this. For good or ill, Brutal Legend is original in being the kid in the crowd that was never afraid to let his true passion shine through.

The World: The Age of Metal must have been one kick-ass time. Mountains of amps, metallic trees, demons, metal god effigies – and the guardian of metal Ozzy Fricken Osborne. It plays with expectations and makes them fit into this world, while giving gamers what they expect in landscapes; snow, desert, jungle, marsh…but it’s the flare of Brutal Legend that makes it stand out superbly. 10/10

The Combat: Sign me up for guitars that shoot lighting, and axes that sever the limbs of emo and glam heads alike. It’s simple, easy to learn and manages to keep with its strengths the whole time. The Real Time Strategy side of things is when the game suffers, only in its simplified take on the genre. It could have taken it to another level and really succeeded in blending the genres. The game does it all serviceably, however.  7/10

The Story: Brutal Legend is silly, sure, but what makes it a believable heart-felt tale is that the characters, their voices, and their passion really shines through. You can believe that these people walk in their shoes and think the way they do – and it sells the whole thing. As I said before – some people aren’t fans of Jack Black, I’m fairly indifferent, but I’ll give him a ton of credit here for being a true lover of music and metal in general. His enthusiasm is infectious. And the writing is bang on. 10/10

The Soundtrack: What game about music, that’s not guitar hero, could succeed without being awesome in the tracks it selects to showcase? None. And that’s why Brutal Legend is really a good gateway drug for people unfamiliar with metal. Ton’s of classics, some new stuff, enough selection to keep it fresh every time you get in the car. It makes for a rocking time while playing and for that –it’s one of the few games where I actually muted my playlist on my computer just to listen to the game and nothing else. Points docked for some of the heavies being missed though *(but I’m sure they asked for too much cash). 9/10

The Freshness: This is important, while not perfect, it must be mentioned that Tim Schafer went out of his way to do what he does best and give you a game you’ve never played before. At times I think maybe he relies on standard play types a little too much, and he could have done more. But I can’t remember a game that I had no good comparison for, and that makes Brutal Legend something that needs to be seen by gamers. It’s unafraid to be something that isn’t a Halo, isn’t a Drakes Fortune, isn’t a run of the mill shoot em up rehash. It might not be for everyone – but we must encourage this type of thinking in the industry. 9/10

Ayer hablé de la mejor canción del mundo: “Bohemian Rhpsody” de Queen (por cierto, ¿sabeis que lo que cuenta la canción es un polvo?), y como tributo colgué el video respectivo con los debidos comentarios de admiración (nunca los suficientes).

Nada mas hacerlo me vino a la mente otro genial video de un no menos genial grupo de gamberrazos llamados “Tenacious D”, compuesto por los musicos y actores Jack Black y Kyle Gass.

El video se llama “Tribute” y cuenta como Jack y Kyle, andando cierta noche por una carretera en la que se les aparece el demonio en forma de Dave Grohl (Foo fighters) que les reta a cantarle la mejor canción del mundo a cambio de no tragarse sus almas, entonces ellos…………….

Ya cuentan en la letra que la que cantan no es la mejor canción del mundo, solo es el tributo, la historia de aquella noche, puesto que no recuerdan cual fue.

Pero estoy seguro que era de Queen.
