Growing up I was a big fan of John Edwards,   a professional and very popular medium who claimed to talk to the dead.

 Edwards has his cynics  but there are also many apparent believers, as his live shows are consistently sold out around the world and his personal readings are booked years in advance.

 I like the idea of ghosts, of becoming something else when we die rather than simply disappearing forever.  And when I look around carefully, there is plenty of evidence that something more does exist.

Charles’ obituary on my wall upstairs is a good example.    That can’t be easily explained… and if I did the math and calculated the odds… how many local papers have been printed in the last 100 years (because though Charles’ obit was published in 1928, the papers on the wall up there date from 1908—and some of those are from Canada).   We’re talking crazy odds, inexplicable odds.

Lucy wants her story told, I don’t doubt it for a moment.  Too many strange coincidences have happened over the years for me to ever doubt it.  And so here I am.

 But what about other ghosts, other stories?

When I learned about Lucy, I started hunting for any historical info I could find, often asking second hand and antique stores if they had old journals, letters, anything.

 One had a trunk of old newspapers from the 1920s and on a whim I bought them, a whole pile that still sits in my house somewhere.  The papers contained many articles about Jack Ryan, a “half-breed” Indian accused of a double murder in the 1920s and the committed prosecutor, Stephen Metzler, who  successfully convicted him and sent him to San Quentin for life.   The trunk also contained a daily journal and even a Christmas invitation from the Metzler family.  I had found Metzler’s trunk and ego collection.

This didn’t seem like such a big deal until I learned about Eureka investigator Richard Walton, who, after hearing about the Jack Ryan story and a death bed confession in the 1980s,    used his personal time for over the decade   to investigate the crime .

After 400 interviews conducted over many years, Walton discovered that Metzler framed Ryan, and that Ryan was coerced into confessing to the crime after his brother was strangled to death with barbed wire, and Jack was threatened with the same. Metzler was a very bad guy.

Walton’s efforts were eventually presented to the state parole board and he was successful in getting Ryan a post humus pardon.  Not a happy ending, but happier, I guess.    I’d like to think that Ryan is at peace now, because Walton listened to the dead.

…both come from a funny little thing here about “saving journalism,” and while I don’t fully agree with the criticism of bloggers/blogging/bloggery, I do find it funny. Personally, an insecure girl in middle America who takes naughty photos of herself and writes online about her secret fantasies and finds that her medium is the internet, not verbal communication with the “real world,” is just as worthy of internetting as a licensed and certifiable hipster who writes about bands that have more novelty value than listenability. But everything is different for everyone and the world/the internet/reality is a big enough sandbox for all. If you read the internet, read what you read. If you write on the internet, write what you write. Journalism will live or die as it needs to.

Though that “citizen dentists” line is still hilarious to me, sorry.

You know, I pretty much slept through the entire balloon boy story today, but it sounds like it was really interesting for a few minutes. Like a childhood fantasy gone crraazzzy. For the kid, I mean. As a new story, it seems kind of annoying.

What Whoopi Goldberg, Harvey Weinstein, etc. are saying in their outrage over the arrest of Roman Polanski.

Oh, and following in the illustrious footsteps of Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, and… Ben Affleck, the new Captain Kirk is Jack Ryan.

Well, I’m going. I’d see any film with Chris Pine. Hell, I’d watch that man make toast.

He’s got the moves, though with these looks…could we see our first non-English Bond? Ok, so it’s not likely, but damn, the man looks good in a suit.

Jack Ryan, who I guess you could call the American Bond, has been portrayed by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, and more recently, Ben Affleck. Not technically a spy, Ryan is actually a “intelligence analyst” a very American term for…actually I’m not sure what Jack Ryan does, but scowling seems to be a big part of it. And have you seen Mr. Pine’s scowl? Shyeah. I’ll take two, thanks.

No word on when the film is set to debut, but I’d not be surprised if another Star Trek is in the can before Paramount turns to another franchise.

The allegations that horrified fellow Republicans and caused his once-promising candidacy to implode in four short days have given Obama a clear lead as Republicans struggled to fetch an alternative.

Ryan’s campaign began to crumble on Monday following the release of embarrassing records from his divorce. In the records, his ex-wife, Boston Public actress Jeri Ryan, said her former husband took her to kinky sex clubs in Paris, New York and New Orleans.

Chris Pine, el joven capitán Kirk de la última Star Trek encarnará al agente de la CIA Jack Ryan Un personaje en el que antes se metieron  Harrison Ford, Alec Baldwin y Ben Affleck.

Tras el éxito de crítica y público cosechado por la precuela de Star Trek dirigida por J.J. Abrams (Lost), Paramount Pictures ha pensado en el protagonista, uno de los rostros más de moda ahora en Hollywood para reiniciar una franquicia que llevaba años en el dique seco.

De hecho, la última aventura del intrépido Ryan en la gran pantalla fue en ‘Al límite de la verdad’ la cinta que en 2002 protagonizó Ben Affleck. Antes le direron vida Harrison Ford en dos película: Juego de patriotas (1992) y Peligro inminente (1994) y Alec Baldwin en La caza del Octubre Rojo (1990).

En esta ocasión el guión será obra de Hossein Amini y los productores Lorenzo di Bonaventura y Mace Neufeld están todavía buscando director después del abandono de Sam Raimi (Spiderman). Si las negociaciones llegan a buen puerto, Pine se hará con un papel para el que también sonaron nombres como los de Aaron Eckhart, James Franco, Ryan Gosling e incluso el mismísimo George Clooney.

El joven actor está en estos momentos rodando Unstoppable, un thriller dirgido por Tony Scott y en el que comparte protagonismo con Denzel Washington. Además, hace pocas horas confirmó su participación en The Art of Making Money, un drama de DJ Caruso (La conspiración del pánico, Disturbia).

O novo filme pretende dar um reboot na franquia e pela primeira vez o roteiro do filme não é baseado em nenhum livro de Tom Clancy. A trama foi escrita por Hossein Amini (Honra e Coragem).

Jack Ryan já foi interpretado por três atores diferentes no cinema, primeiro por Alec Baldwin em Caçada ao Outobro Vermelho (1990), depois por Harrison Ford em  Jogos Patríoticos (1992) e seu último interpréte foi Ben Affleck no filme A Soma de Todos os Medos (2002).

Tom Clancy é um excelente escrito e com certeza Jack Ryan é o seu melhor personagem, que rendeu três bons filmes e surpreedente até Ben Affleck conseguiu ficar bem no papel.

O filme ainda não tem cronograma e nem diretor.

Back in July 2009, it was announced that George Clooney would perhaps play the next Jack Ryan in the reboot of the franchise based on the Tom Clancy novels. Now according to Variety, Chris Pine (“Star Trek”) is in negotiations to play the next Jack Ryan.

Alec Baldwin was the first to portray Jack Ryan in “The Hunt for the Red October”. Harrison Ford took over for two films, “Patriot Games” and “Clear and Present Danger” and in an effort to relaunch the franchise, Ben Affleck took over the part in “The Sum of All Fears” (2002).

I can imagine that if Pine were cast as the next Jack Ryan, the franchise might take a similar approach as J.J. Abrams remake of “Star Trek” where the reboot would tell the story of how Jack Ryan became part of the CIA or rather events leading up to it.

Chris Pine is in negotiations to play Jack Ryan in a reboot of the Tom Clancy franchise.  He would become the fourth actor to play the role.  The character was originated by Alec Baldwin in The Hunt for Red October , taken over by Harrison Ford for Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger, followed by Ben Affleck in Sum of All Fears.

Pine, who impressed audiences with his aggressive, nervy take on Captain Kirk in last summer’s Star Trek, seems a good choice for the role.

Who’s you’re favorite Jack Ryan?  We have to go with Baldwin who had the right mix of intelligence and action hero abilities.  He also had the benefit of being in the best film of the series.

O novo filme em questão não será adaptada de nenhuma das história do autor do personagem da CIA, Tom Clancy. E sim, uma roteiro inédito escrito Hossein Amini.

Por enquanto ainda não existe um cronograma sobre o novo filme, bem como será para o ator coinciliar a agenda para estar na continuação de Star Trek. 2010 será de muito trabalho para Pine.

Pine is positioned to topline his second Par franchise. He played James T. Kirk in “Star Trek,” the J.J. Abrams-directed summer hit, and will reprise the role in the sequel.

Pine is separately in talks to team with director D.J. Caruso in the Paramount drama “The Art of Making Money,” early next year.

Talks have just started, but Pine is expected to come aboard the Jack Ryan film as the project is still taking shape. The studio and producers Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mace Neufeld are working with a script draft by Hossein Amini, based on an original concept.

They are still in deep development and it is unclear whether Pine would make another “Star Trek” before the Jack Ryan film. He will clearly be working often for Paramount over the next several years.

Pine, currently starring with Denzel Washington in the Tony Scott-directed “Unstoppable” for Fox, is vying to be the fourth actor to play Ryan, the CIA analyst in the Par film series.

Variety is reporting that Paramount is actively seeking to reboot the Jack Ryan franchise and in discussions with new acting sensation Chris Pine. Pine of course is the face of another of Paramount’s tent-pole franchises, Star Trek and recently breathed new life in the character of James Tiberius Kirk.

Jack Ryan is of course Tom Clancy’s main protagonist and has appeared in 12 of the best-selling authors novels. Previous screen outings have seen Alec Baldwin (The Hunt for Red October), Harrison Ford (Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger) and most recently Ben Affleck (The Sum of All Fears) take up the role. My personal favourite is Ford in Clear and Present Danger but I thought that Affleck was more than adequate in the underrated The Sum of All Fears. Recent names linked with the role have included Ford again, Ryan Gosling and George Clooney.

I think younger is good if they’re going back to his earlier days but that Ford would be perfect for Debt of Honour and Executive Orders, novels in which Ryan is pushed to the forefront of political life. Apparently the next movie will not be based on one of Tom Clancy’s works but rather an original story and script is being worked on. No word on potential directors or start dates but I would love to see Liev Schreiber back as John Clark and perhaps in the directors chair too. His adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer’s novel Everything Is Illuminated showed great potential.

Harrison Ford may have expressed interest in playing Jack Ryan again for the next film but it’s either Harrison changed his mind or Paramount doesn’t want him.

Over the past two years 3six0 Architecture has been participating in the mentor program of Providence’s Met school. The Met School, short for Metropolitan Regional Career and Technical Center, is a state-funded school district that serves 690 high school students. The school was created under the direction of Doctors Dennis Littky and Elliot Washor who were given the opportunity by the state of RI to create a “school of the 21st century” that would involve “hands and minds.” The Met is divided into six smaller schools, with four of them sharing a campus on Providence’s South Side. The schools are intentionally kept small at 120 students and the curriculum focuses on “Authentic Experiences”:

“Education research tells us schools need to be smaller, with more parent involvement and more personalized curricula. Brain Research shows people learn by making sense of information, by connecting things, and learning by real context. Learning theory asserts the value of hands-on experiences. Development psychology says kids are fragile and must be nurtured by adult mentors to thrive. Gang research tells young people need to feel a part of a culture, something larger than themselves. The Met incorporated all of these notions and opened its doors in the fall of 1996 with 50 freshman in the Shepherd Building in downtown Providence.” The Met School

Alejandra Vidal, Met school junior, interned at our office this past January to June. Brandee Lapisky, her Met advisor, introduced Alejandra to us when she expressed a desire to learn about green architecture practices. Alejandra and I decided to divide her internship into two parts, with the first part focusing on research into passive methods of heating, cooling and shading used in the design of structures to create comfortable environments and reduced dependence on energy. The second portion of the internship would be her own design proposal involving both a real client and a project that would be ultimately constructed.

George Clooney

Según The Daily Beast, George Clooney tiene el interés de revivir al personaje de Jack Ryan de las novelas de Tom Clansy que ustedes han visto en la pantalla como Clear and Present Danger, Patriot games y la movie del 2002, La suma de todos los miedos.

Clooney quiere entrarle a esta oportunidad comercial ya que como la franquicia de Ocean’s eleven ya está en decadencia y si la Paramount acepta revivir las series de este autor, le caerían de perlas ya que a los 50 años, se necesita presencia comercial en el cine.

Esto último fue su opinión sobre él mismo.
