If you haven’t noticed, the past week or so has been filled with… well, nothing. Not surprised? Technically, due to our crazy activeness in writing posts, you might have seen this coming. So. I have a more valid excuse this week, at least it’s a little less vague as “I was busy.” And way better than a disappointingly honest “I was just too lazy to give a cat’s whisker.” Although the last two are usually true, this week Jehovah has decided to at least give me an alibi for all of this blog’s millions of viewers.

My terribly horrible (no, I mean it was truly terribly horrible) reason is this: the internet. Or rather, airport. Or that little black box with the blinking green lights that’s plugged into the computer. I don’t really know the difference, and one day I’m going to ask Steve Jobs exactly why those little white boxes are called airports. It doesn’t really make much sense to me. All I know is that all of those things have decided to quit, or go on strike. Either that or they’re going through puberty as moody adolescents who throw fits and have mood-swings. If you didn’t understand my analogy, I mean that my internet sucks. When it works it works for an hour or less and only connects to one computer. In fact, it’s a miracle that I’m able to even publish this, since this is really an old post that I’ll be saving (and then publishing) when my internet connects for more than five minutes.

Have you ever gone camping? And not your lame excuse kind of camping where you pitch a tent in your backyard (or neighbor’s yard, if you want an adventure), but I mean in the (sort of) untouched wilderness of Utah, or Montana, or um… the park down the street. But anyway, the point is that things, things that normally don’t matter begin to become a hassle. Like washing your hands for example, brushing your teeth, avoiding bear wastes, or producing wastes. All of these things are hard to do whilst in the wilderness (might or might not apply to neighbor’s backyard). When you finally decide to take the long trek to the outhouse at night, everyone jumps up to go with you, you all need to take care of unfinished business. Right?

Well, the same goes for bad internet. When you haven’t used it in weeks and your email is piling up, or you haven’t harvested your crops on FarmVille and they’re all wilted, every chance you get to go do those things–you’ll take it. Which pretty much explains why my family takes a laptop with us wherever we go. If we’re at a coffee shop with free wi-fi: Get out the laptop! Cruising through residential areas: Get out the laptop! We’ve become first-class internet pirates. Although we don’t wear pirate hats or have parrots/monkeys on our shoulders, we are real deal. Taking over (not really) your internet for as long as we can. So beware, until I get my internet fixed, I might be parked outside your home, using your internet that you paid for with your own money (if you don’t have a password, that is) or rolling down your street at five miles per hour, looking for more internets to plunder. As a consolation, you should be honored.

TOFFPOX: Prudence! What kind of person drinks rum?
PRUDENCE: …A person who wants to get drunk?
TOFFPOX: No! Yes! I mean – what sort of rogue is usually associated with rum?
PRUDENCE: …Johnny Depp?
TOFFPOX: …Who?
PRUDENCE: Johnny Depp, the local barman.
TOFFPOX: (disdainfully) “Johnny Depp, the local barman”?
PRUDENCE: Yes – well, if you told me to say the first thing that comes into my head when you say “rum”, I would say “Johnny Depp”, because he’s the local barman, and serves alcohol, including rum, so, yes, he’s the sort of rogue that I would associate with –
TOFFPOX: No, no, Prudence, you’re missing my point –
PRUDENCE: Which is?
TOFFPOX: Pirates! Pirates drink rum!
PRUDENCE: …And?
TOFFPOX: We could dress up as pirates and run away to sea!

First night of Fairytale Shorts – ten minute fairytale adaptations/devised pieces performed by the uni’s drama society – went well. My short, “Scurvy Curs: A Delightful Tale of Whimsy”, about two ladies who seek adventure as a badly-disguised male pirate and a parrot named Nobstradamus, went down well. I am extremely pleased with the audience’s reaction to the whole thing. Pirates having an orgy to the tunes of “Love Shack”, a maid with a feather duster wound into a coathanger and worn as a headdress and the crew dancing around the stage to “Why Is The Rum Gone?” seem to go down well with people my age and older, which excites me. I’m glad I wasn’t just writing stuff that I thought was hysterically funny and alienated everybody else. AND they laughed a lot at my character, which I suspect is because of the highly nasal voice and the glasses perched on the end of my nose. I love Bluster. She’s insane.

COCKSWAIN: Do ye swear by the sword that ye really be a scurvy cur and yer true callin’ be to run through bluejackets and lobsters?
BLUSTER: Are you averse to killing naval officers of any sort?
TOFFPOX: No.
BLUSTER: No.
COCKSWAIN: And be ye true to the sweet trade until ye find yeself in Davy Jones’s locker?
BLUSTER: Will you be a pirate until you cop it?
TOFFPOX: …I suppose so.
BLUSTER: Yes.

Second and final night of the performance tonight. I had a nightmare that I was forced to rewrite the entire thing and everything fell apart on the night, and I’m glad that’s not the case. (I guess now that I’ve written that, half my cast is going to fall ill or break body parts. I hope not.)

In other, more academically-focused news, I got the same mark in both my first essays for this year: THREE MARKS short of a first. I started out on a trip of self-loathing once more, until my seminar tutor told me that actually, it’s really good at this stage, and next time I can work towards a first. I am very happy indeed. I got a couple of firsts last year, which don’t count towards my degree mark, but I hope to repeat the performance again. It’s very odd. I’m used to A*s in all my English pieces of work, so not getting a first kind of equated to getting a B. You won’t really appreciate this until you know that, consistently throughout my school life, I have been achieving among the highest marks in the year in everything to do with English. It was that one subject that I never ever really tried hard at but enjoyed and got high marks in anyway. Science and Maths? Bollocks to them.

O quarto filme da franquia Piratas dos do Caribe já tem diretor e será um dos bons, Rob Marshall (Chicago), confirmou que vai dirigir o longa.

Marshall ainda disse que já conversou com Johnny Deep e que ambos estão ansiosos para trabalharem juntos. Lembrando que o retorno de Deep não era certo, mas parece que o astro aceitou voltar ao excelente papel de Jack Sparrow.

Uno de mis personajes favoritos en el mundo del cine es el Capitan Jack Sparrow de la pelicula Piratas del Caribe interpretado maravillosamente por Johnny Depp (uno de mis hermosos novios).

Johnny empezo a construir el personaje de Jack, sin seguir el guion el actor hizo una mezcla del baterista de los Rolling Stones Keith Richard, Pepe Le Pew. Johnny pensaba que los piratas se compararian con lo que ahora son las estrellas de Rock, este logro un personaje lleno de recuerdos, su caminar afeminado, da sexualidad ambigua y absolutamente sinverguenza. Este esfuerzo por crear al personaje le valio una nominacion al Oscar.

Day 11

Yesterday sailed by, easy breezy. Wind in my sails like Captain Jack Sparrow.

Today…not so easy & nothing breezy about it.  I am craving  &%^$#  EVERYTHING! Here’s a partial list:

• Grilled ham & cheese sandwich from Olympic Diner in SF. The waitress would get pissed when I asked if they could throw a fried egg on it, I’d say “pretty please” and she’d bring it out w/ a smile and EXTRA home fries!
• ANY flavor of piping hot ooey gooey mozzarella topped perfection from Rocco’s Pizzeria in Walnut Creek. My creation usually was pancetta, sun-dried tomatoes, pesto, and feta…but sometimes I’d go for traditional red sauce w/ ground beef, garlic, and green peppers.
• A heaping plate of CARNITAS from my favorite authentic Mexican restaurant, Las Montanas in Concord.  Somehow their food isn’t “wet” like most mex places.  It floods your mouth with flavor, but as an example the rice is fluffy and dry and perfect.  The staff is the best I’ve ever encountered.  The drinks always sucked so i stuck with ice cold LAGUNITAS IPA from the tap.
• My own cooking, esp slow cooked homemade spicy tomato sauce w/ pasta…
• A perfect loaf of ciabatta from the BROOKLYN BREAD COMPANY in Carroll Gardens and salted butter!
• The #3 I think it was at the Thai restaurant my boss used to take me to on 23rd street in Chelsea when I worked in Manhattan.  Even when I asked for “not so spicy” I’d cry through every meal and savor every morsel.  I REALLY MISS NYC on many levels.
• Sweet & Tangy pulled pork BBQ  or Tri-Tip sandwich from Firestone Grille in my original hometown of San Luis Obispo CA. Their fries are the bomb, the patio is the place to be seen, and all kinds of micro brewskies. While in SLO why not hit up the Thurs night Farmer’s Market and stand in the ridiculous long line for McKlintocks beef ribs, camp beans, garlic bread & real lemonade… And one more spot in SLO you can’t skip is High Street Deli on, yup, High Street.  San Luis Sourdough piled with whatever you want in between…  
• Chilaquiles w/ chorizo & sour cream at the King’s Highway, the cool new diner at the chic new Ace Hotel in Palm Springs where a friend recently saw Drew Barrymore and company eating.  Wash it down with their house ale that’s only $3 a pint in an otherwise pricey enviro. Go on a Wed night & bring your swimsuit, grab a Tanqueray and Lime at the bar & go join the DJ’d pool party.
• Chili Fries with a mountain of melted cheddar! But the chili has got to be SPICY like Cool Cats in SLO!

Ok, sorry to put you through that if you came to this blog looking for encouragement with your raw endeavors.  But, this is part of it, right?  I’m trying to keep it real and not sugarcoat my experience going raw.

I’m NOT going to eat anything like that today!  And no cold beer! Raw food eating is worth it. I feel good and already look a lot better.  In about a week I’ll post the first before & after pics of my journey into better health. Each Tuesday I will also weigh myself.  My first week I lost 7lbs. So I’m curious to see what week two’s weight loss is.

I feel kinda bad (not really) for posting all those cooked food pics on a raw food blog–don’t judge. So to try and offset the greasy pics above I want to post the best looking raw food pic I have seen this week. They are “Red Pepper Poppers” and that is EGGPLANT BACON! Call me Sparrow… Cap’n Sparrow.
…Or is that Miss Sparrow?

Yes, I’m talking about the cute, little brown birds. But I’m also talking about the hot and sexy pirate played by Johnny Depp. Okay, the pirate’s not so sexy (hot, in a rum-soaked-island-sun sort of way, yes, but not hot, as in sexy) but Johnny Depp sure was when he played Cap’n Jack.

And what in the world, you’re wondering, do the two have in common?

Yes, there is a method to my madness, and, no, it’s not the rum-soaked one of the Cap’n’s. (Are all those apostrophes correct?)

My current series on the shelves is about Mers: Mermen and Mermaids (though the maid part went by the quayside a while ago). And when writing about Mers one will naturally mention pirates. Or Johnny Depp. Or both. (And who doesn’t love the Johnny Depp reference?)

So, yes, there’s a Johnny Depp line in my first book, In Over Her Head, that sealed the deal for my agent. She loved that line, knew she liked my humor and our relationship was born.

The humor also sealed the deal with my editor, and along came book 2, Wild Blue Under, which launched this November 3rd. Now this story is about Rod, a Mer Prince who comes onto land (Kansas, because it’s as far as you can get from the ocean in the Continental US) to bring the lost half-Mer princess back to Atlantis. Only she doesn’t want to go, because, really. Mermen? Atlantis? Yeah, right. Matter of fact, she’s allergic to ocean water. No way, no how, is she going to the ocean.

And then the attacks start.

What attacks you ask? What kind of attacks could possibly get her moving?

Try dive-bombing peregrines and a mercenary albatross.

Now you see where the bird connection comes in.

But the sparrows are the good guys, er, ladies. Yes, Maybelle and Adele help thwart the evil villains and save the Prince and Princess so they can resume their rightful place on the throne of Atlantis.
Sadly, it’s not as easy as all that, and our hero and heroine – as well as the two industrious little sparrows – have a whole bunch of things to overcome.

Kind of like I did when I wrote this story.

And it’s thanks to my good friend Adele Dubois (seeing the tie-in with the sparrow now???) that I could get the research I needed for the cross-country dash to the coast.

Adele, fortuitously enough for me, was on her way to a drive out to the Midwest, along the same route I wanted my hero and heroine to travel, and she so very helpfully grabbed brochures and emailed me the sights & sounds, and her impressions of the trip, all of which were utilized in my story. She continued her trip to research her book, Desert Nectar. 

So, as Adele Dubois saved the day for my dearth of first-hand research, so, too, does Adele the Sparrow save the day for the hero and heroine.

First of all, and FOR THE LAST TIME: dressing as a ninja in WHORE ISLAND is a major no-no at any given time, as the seven idiots who did on this Halloween found out at the cost of their lives.

Halloween on WHORE ISLAND was eventful this year. As usual, most pirates dressed as pirates — this might not sound like something remarkable, but most pirates rarely wear clothes at all in WHORE ISLAND, so when they actually bother you know it’s a special day (or a cold one).

The whores, as always, were more creative with their outfits. There were many, of course, whose costume still consisted of a whore: several went as Megan Fox, Lindsay Lohan and Will Smith. But a staggering number of whores played with the possibilities, some even dressing up in elaborate Cthulhu costumes.

A lot of people thought Lady Red’s costume — a vagina having a period — wasn’t that clever a joke, but nobody said anything so she woudn’t be offended and close the Insolent Cock for the night (which would force everyone to go to Honest Ted’s Shithole Pub, where Ted himself was dressed as Naked Ted).

Some celebrities were seen on the island as well. It took a while for everyone to notice the guy dressed as Jack Sparrow was in fact Johnny Depp. He signed autographs and was complimented for his accurate portrayal of a Proper Pirate. Orlando Bloom, on the other hand, was badly beaten up, even though he went as Legolas. Or perhaps because he went as Legolas, since going as Will Turner would probably have resulted in a search to locate all his body parts.

The death toll was, not counting the ninjas (but counting the seven idiots who went as ninjas), 48 people, four less than in 2008. It should be noted the pumpkin outside the Shithole Pub belonged to a guy who went dressed as a pumpkin. His head is still in the pumpkin.

El actor que encarna en la gran pantalla al villano de la primera entrega de “Piratas del Caribe”, Geoffrey Rush, ha hecho publica en unas declaraciones su incorporación a la cuarta parte de la saga, “Piratas del Caribe: En costas extrañas”.

«Creo que empezamos a rodar esta primavera» comenta el actor, «están esperando a que los escritores terminen un guión que se aleje completamente de la historia de la trilogía anterior, tomándolo en una nueva dirección para que la película sea fresca y, esperemos, que interesante para la audiencia; para que tras ver la película no se sientan que salgan de una máquina de churros o algo así, lo que no sería nada bueno».

No se yo si la próxima primavera comenzara el rodaje o lo aplazarán a causa de los movimientos internos que ha sufrido la Disney en estos últimos meses y que han provocado que Johnny Deep se plantee retomar el papel del Capitán Sparrow. Si yo fuera algún jefazo de la Disney me aseguraría antes el tener bien atado al señorito Deep que de fijar una fecha de estreno e inicio de rodaje, por que esta claro quien es el alma de la saga.

Por ahora, el estreno esta previsto para el verano del 2011.

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Financial woes often drive couples apart but the current recession seems to be having the opposite effect, with less couples able to afford the cost of a divorce.

The American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML) said more than half of the respondents to its latest survey among its 1,600 members had cited a drop in divorce filings during the current recession which has cut jobs, salaries and house prices.

In total, 57 percent of the attorneys noted fewer divorce filings since the last quarter of 2008. Only 14 percent noted an increase in filings during these difficult times.

“The current economic climate is proving to be far more unforgiving than estranged couples seeking a divorce,” said Gary Nickelson, president of the AAML, in a statement.

Der Film soll also tatsächlich gedreht werden und auch Johnny Depp hat bereits zugesagt noch einmal Captain Jack Sparrow zu spielen. Leider werden Keira Knightley und orlando Bloom nicht mehr in ihren Rollen zu sehen sein. Sehr schade das die beiden abgesagt haben. Warum sie nicht noch einmal mitspielen werden ist nicht genau bekannt. Es gibt lediglich Spekulationen auf die man sich allerdings nicht verlassen sollte.

Gespannt kann man also auf den vierten Teil warten und hoffen das er seinen Vorgängern in nichts nach steht.

Let me take you back to Halloweens of yesterday.  Remember dressing up as a kid for Halloween?  I remember planning out everything from what I was going to be, to how realistic I could make the costume.  He-Man was one of my favorite cosutmes I can remember, the plastic muscles and a cheesy plastic mask complete with elastic band in the back.  For some reason I remember how hard it was to breath under that mask.  Even at a young age I had a problem with how real a costume looked.  I told my mom, that I didn’t like that my hair was showing in the back, which didn’t match He-Man neon yellow plastic hair.  Don’t even get me started on how I fought my Mom on why He-Man would never wear a puffy warm jacket. 

Who ever this kids parents are are children of the 80s and brilliant.

Black Dog Martini

6 parts light rum, 1 part dry vermouth, pitted black olive for garnish

Well, similar to last night, I dropped the ball on the garnish with this one.  I didn’t have any black olives on hand.  Usually I have a can of them hanging around in my pantry and fully expected to find them.  No.  Nary a black olive to be found.  I have four different kinds of GREEN olives in the fridge, though!  I threw in a standard pimento-stuffed green so it wouldn’t just look like I was drinking a glass of water out of a fancy glass.  A real shame not to make the drink legit, I do like black dogs (other than Dobermans and Rottweilers, which I guess is most of them, no?).  Well, Sue’s family used to have Shelly, the black lab who had a tendency to eat stray underwear that fell out of the laundry basket.  She was an interesting dog, a big ol’ ‘woof’ dog as I like to call them.  She could always be counted on to thump a happy tail against you when you came by to visit.  Shelly, this one’s for you.

Now I’m not a huge rum drinker.  Much as I love Captain Jack Sparrow and the quote, “But why is the rum gone?”, it’s just not my thing.  A little sweet and strong for my taste, unless it’s in a pina colada.  But I’ve given those up in my latter years once I realized how fattening they were.  But I did love them in my younger days; however, that was more to do with the tropical imagery they conveyed than with the rum.  I can remember a dorm party in my freshman year at UC Berkeley where they served alcohol in the dorms (yes!  I kid you not!  to underaged kids!) and we mixed up a batch of pina coladas with a blender we’d borrowed with Bacardi 151.  Oh my.  Not even sure I got through one of those.  Tasty, though.  I think I’ve had maybe one or two decent Mai Tais in my life but the rest always taste like a bucket of turpentine with orange juice thrown in – too harsh.  And rum and Coke?  Yuck.  Still not my style.

So I’m not expecting much from this.  I will admit I did sample a few different rums a couple years back at Rum Jungle in the Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas.  That was fun.  Admittedly, I liked the vodka sampler from Red Square much, more better!  But I have more of a palate for vodka than I do for rum.  We’re all built differently, I suppose.  So I mixed up my rum-based martini … which to me is a bastardization of the drink anyway.  But then again, to the martini purist, the only real martini is a gin-based one, so I’m hardly one to talk, given I only drink vodka ones when not trying to drink my way through a recipe book in 80 days (no, wait, it was 73 … less than that now)!  Added my green olive, although for the sake of color matching, I did contemplate a Milk Dud out of the bowl of Halloween candy I have sitting in wait for Saturday night, but that doesn’t seem right.  Does anyone out there actually EAT Milk Duds?  I remember tossing those out when I got them in my Halloween candy collection as a kid!

Okay, enough ranting.  Not my style on the first sip.  But by the end of the glass, a decent drink.  Nothing I’d rave about, but if I was down to only rum and vermouth in my liquor cabinet, I’d mix this up and have a go, and perhaps then I’d even have black olives.  Might be good with Mexican food, and usually a spare black olive can be found as a garnish there anyway.  I’ll have to remember that.  Not so good with a dinner consisting of a Reese’s peanut butter cup and a piece of garlic bread.  On the other hand, I went to the doctor today for a cortisone injection in one of my two bad knees, and between that and the lidocaine that preceeded it, I probably wouldn’t care what you served me for dinner.  I’m in an oddly happy mood.  Maybe because I’m looking forward to (hopefully) one of my knees not hurting me for the first time in months once the shot kicks in.  We shall see. In the mean time, Fido (my Black Dog) and I bid you a good night’s rest.

Worst Halloween Costumes for 2009

It’s that time of year again: Leaves are falling, temperature is cooling, and people are gearing up for Halloween.  I can’t seem to go to any social event lately without people asking me “Ooooo what are you going to be this year”…. strange question out of context, so I always get thrown off because I’m not really listening anyway.  

The thing is, I just picked out my costume a week ago.  This is pure INSANITY according to the people who spend their whole year deciding who they want to be for a few hours to get away from their dull average lives.  Don’t get me wrong, I like Halloween and I like dressing up for it –  I just don’t like the obsession with it.  

Anywho, all the costume ‘buzz’ got me thinking.  Every year, there are those dumb asses who dress in costumes that they think are clever and/or socially relevant – I want to punch these people.  So, I decided to make a list of people I’m going to punch this year (only in the costume category, of course.  I want to surprise the others!)

1) Michael Jackson-Regular OR Zombie Style

Yes, he’s dead, and now your can re-wear your Thriller costume that’s been collecting dust in your closet for the past 15 years.  I can see it now – You’ll suite up in your sequined jacket, pull on your white glove, and lube up your hair.  Just remember this: only YOU can prevent douch-baggery.

2) Octo-Mom

One time my boyfriend got mad at me because I came home with four pairs of shoes.  Granted, I was going out for groceries, but I told him “you’re lucky they weren’t babies” and he told me to return two and come back with Chinese food.  

I have eight underweight/neglected reasons to hate this woman, and I hate you more for emulating her.  

3) Sarah Palin 

I made a city out of Star Wars figurines once and proclaimed myself the Governor, that still doesn’t give me the right to run for Vice President, even though I had more citizens in my town than she did.  

The only person who could pull this costume off is Tina Fey.  Are you Tina Fey?  Oh, you’re not?  Excellent, then don’t make yourself look like a jackass intentionally.  

Picture Note:  Obviously that is some Porn Star with Sarah Palin’s body superimposed, but it’s more interesting, so I thought I would use that one instead. 

4) Jack Sparrow

If you’re going to be a Johnny Depp character, be Sweeny Todd or Edward Scissor Hands.  Nothing screams “rape me in the ass” more than dressing like a drunken gay pirate all night, but maybe you like that kind of thing…I don’t judge.  

The ONLY reason this costume would be clever is if you wore it to mask your alcoholism…but then your pirate costume options open up a little… 

Picture Note: I didn’t want to use a real picture of Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow, because you won’t look that cool.  If you did, I wouldn’t have a problem with it.  You’re more likely to look like that tool standing up there just waiting to be railed in the ass (and I’m not talking about the Captain) 

5) Sexy Costumes that shouldn’t be sexy

Now, there are hundreds of these types of costumes, so I’m going to lump the category together and review the three that I came across through google my sources 

Sex’in up Nemo, huh?  Voice over by Ellen DeGeneres, really?  I guess this IS the perfect opprotunity for Pedophiles to pick up kids – given them candy and dress up like a fucking cartoon.  Hey, you know what would go really well with this outfit?  A big black van with tinted windows. 

Well now.  Nothing is sexier than a Border Patrol Officer, making sure ol’ Juan doesn’t illegally come into our country and steal our jobs, right?  I’m joking, of course.  It’s necessary, but sexy?  I say nay. 

If you’re too chicken to actually do it, don’t do it.  You gotta give it to the guy in the picture though.   It’s hard to see from the thumbnail, but he has a sheepish look on his face (picture on left) like “Oh, I didn’t see you there” – then BAM – cock in ya’ face!
