Recently my awesome time down south got cut short by the unexpected and to be expected “Call

Recently my awesome time down south got cut short by the unexpected and to be expected “Call”. This “Call” was to send me from Southampton to Swindon on Wednesday night, and then from Swindon to Manchester, to home, to Manchester, to Manchester airport to Aberdeen on Thursday. Lets put it this way, aside from the fact that all time on trains / planes is technically time to yourself, I only got about an hour in the morning, 3 hours in the afternoon and an hour in Aberdeen to myself. The rest of the day from about 10-10 was spent travelling. YAY!

In stark contrast to the first hitch I went on where I was so excited I forgot what rig I was going to this time I was so annoyed I forgot what rig I was going to. Handily at the Speedbird Inn hotel where I checked in (I say checked in, I mean sullenly moaned at the check inn person – I did apologise, don’t worry!) I recognised a man I once met at the Staffhouse when I was on my training. He implicated drinks were in order, which they bloody were! At the Pub I met again with the one guy who had a nice check in of 11.00 and another guy headed to the same rig as me (which turned out to be the Byford Dolphin) with our horrible check in of 6.20. Handily the Hotel did a free shuttle bus to the Bond Heliport but staying in a pub till around 11.30 having to get up for around 5am is not a happy mix.

Checking in was easy, however, our flight was not due to leave to 10.30 due to cancelled flights the night before. Bugger. This left us sitting at the heliport doing sweet FA twiddling our thumbs and getting outrageously hungry. Handily sausage and egg rolls were supplied (in truth a variety of breakfast rolls were supplied, it just happened that I opted for the aforementioned).

*Helicopter Journey, start Jurassic park Music*

Arriving on the semi sub I realised just how low it was compared to the Jack-up’s I had been on before. It would probably be very survivable to take the plunge. Because the Byford Dolphin is a semi-sub it has the derrick in the middle. This leads to some confusing layout issues if you (like me) are used to Jack-ups. Instead of everything being Accommodation – everything else – Rig floor in order it’s a mix jig or all of it everywhere in no particular order. Or at least that’s how I feel. Also this is my first time using Oil based mud. This is just the fluid they are using. The difference between oil based mud and water based mud is as it sounds, but: oil based mud is horrible stuff, whereas water based mud is nice n_n. Instead of requiring just water to wash samples now I need base oil and Rig wash. in that order. Otherwise samples aren’t cleaned properly and that isn’t good.

What else is different? Oh right yeh. Instead of a reasonably sized unit with two people in there is now a slightly less than reasonably sized unit with five people in. The shakers looks different and confusing, our sample catching tray is a piece of plastic the size of a Christmas card and instead of the well organised Real Time Plot (thing I use to look at the real time data and know when my samples come up etc) I have to use this crazy thing called Rig Link. It does show all the same information but in different places, as well as an abundance of other useless information which really doesn’t need to be plotted!

First two days have been doing not alot. First day was mainly taken up by a well killing drill and the second day was mainly taken up by trying to drill through the cement head and plug which took over 6 hours (to drill through about 2-3m). I came out this evening (morning) expecting to be in the midst of catching samples but we still haven’t even finished drilling through the cement yet. Oh well! Wonder what’s for lunch…

Many of you know my shameful Friday evening ritual of wedding-themed television programming on TLC:

Many of you know my shameful Friday evening ritual of wedding-themed television programming on TLC: Say Yes to the Dress, Four Weddings, etc. My favorite being the Atlanta version of Say Yes partly because it’s a stone’s throw from my abode and partly because I have a fondness for tacky rednecks in overalls and dirty gardening hats giving opinionated fashion advice to their relatives.

But something’s bothering me. Something other than spending my Fridays this way.

Lori, Monte and Robin keep saying that they are going to get in there and “jack up” their brides (with accessories) so she can better envision her wedding-day look and so they can close the sale. I just don’t think they know what that means. Believe me, nothing would delight me more than to see them literally get in there and jack their brides up – clown make-up, crazy hair, ruffled lace 80s gloves, maybe some sort of bedazzled terror with a clip-on feather or two, perhaps something with LED lights.

All jacked up for her special day!

But I think they’re trying to use “jack up” as in ‘spruce up’ or ‘glam up’ or ‘bling up’ (all of which sound equally horrendous) and not necessarily in an ironic way (they’re not Williamsburg hipsters) but in a grown-ups-trying-to-sound-with-it-around-the-teenagers-and-their-friends way. But they are not with it. They are without it.

I have never heard Flo say this. Flo is my girl, I think she knows better and won’t be made a fool of.

From thefreedictionary.com:

jack up

vb (adverb)

1. (Business / Commerce) (tr) to increase (prices, salaries, etc.)

2. (tr) to raise an object, such as a car, with or as with a jack

3. (intr) Slang to inject oneself with a drug, usually heroin (!!!!!!!)

4. (intr) Austral informal to refuse to comply; rebel, esp collectively

5. NZ informal to initiate, organize, or procure

What if they’re injecting the brides with a drug, usually heroine?

Craaaaaaaaap. I just noticed that a suggested synonym for ‘jack up’ is ‘enhance’, as in exactly what they’re doing with the veils and jewelled belts and clips and things. Screw it, the post is already written, it still sounds <del>jacked up</del> stupid when they say it and I’d like them to find a better catch phrase.

For fun, google image search “clown bride” – especially if you’re home alone and it’s late in the evening. You’re welcome. If clowns terrify you, like they do me, you will likely never sleep again. Why did I search that? Sleep used to be one of my favorite things.

Sarah's Vineyard is in Gilroy... but not really.

On Friday, Kara and I decided to head over to Sarah’s Vineyard in Gilroy. Sarah’s is a small winery, tucked into the Santa Cruz Mountains. The breezy climate makes it perfect for Burgundian and Rhone varietals. I am a big fan of their light style of wine making.

The reason for the trip was to attend their Summer Music Series. They have a neat patio and lawn area where different local bands will come to play. The tasting room stays open late to sell their wines by the bottle to enjoy with the music. You can bring your own picnic, or buy something to eat from whichever catering company is there (it changes from week to week).

Kara and I brought homemade Brie Paninis with Mango Chutney, Turkey (for me), and Spinach. We also bought a bottle of the Sarah’s Vineyard 2006 Central Coast Pinot Noir for $15.

Sarah's Vineyard 2006 Central Coast Pinot Noir and Kara's foot 2011.

Color: This Pinot had a cloudy dull red color. You could recreate that color by mashing a bunch of over-ripe roma tomatoes into a paste and adding water and a pinch of dirt. I know that doesn’t sound very appetizing, but I must say it looked fantastic. See…

Tomatoes and Dirt and Awesome!

Nose: There was a nice whiff of smoke, butter, and pepper. As I took a bit more in, I noticed a rubbery cola aroma. Nice!

Taste: This Pinot Noir had a very meaty and buttery taste on the palate, rounded out with a touch of cherry cola. On the finish, a touch of cranberry and walnuts became present.

I really liked this wine. I also appreciate that Sarah’s did not jack up their prices for the event. I give it a solid 87.

As the sun began to set, the wind really started to pick up. It got hella cold, hella quick. The cover band, Naked in Vegas, was alright. They were not, however, good enough to keep our cold asses at the vineyard after we had finished our bottle of Pinot Noir.

Naked in Vegas? More like bundled up in Gilroy!

Don’t worry, Sarah’s Vineyard, we will be back.

Stay Rad,

Poor old Seahawk! After just 500-odd days of being in business, the plain old unlucky Gulf of Me

Poor old Seahawk! After just 500-odd days of being in business, the plain old unlucky Gulf of Mexico oil and gas contractor has limped its last and crashed under its mountains of debt and now relies on a $35m credit facility to keep it going. Ouch. That represents roughly $1 a second in liabilities since its spin-off from Pride International in 2009 and yet more proof of the fallout from the Macondo blowout. Whilst the US competition commission looks over the acquisition bid by Seahawk’s stronger rival, Hercules Offshore, two thoughts cross our pretty minds here at the Black Stuff: whether this is a good move on Hercules’ part and how Seahawk could have got their strategy so utterly wrong. Well… hindsight’s a wonderful thing.

Hercules already owns a number of older mat-based rigs, some as old as me -shock, horror – and in swallowing up Seahawk assets, they’re taking on more of the same cheap old tat. Good idea?? Surprisingly, yes. Seahawk is on its knees and has just sold its 20 rigs for a little over $100m. Whether these rigs are sold on or marketed to other operators, Hercules will profit from the acquisition; with international day rates in early 100s of thousands of dollars, at least someone’s going to make some decent whack. (Picture jackals taking chunks out of a good-sized, old, dead zebra.)

Damn those Libyans! Couldn’t they have revolted a bit sooner? As Seahawk sobs into its proverbial pint, there is a chance that demand for GoM oil will rise up, along with all Gaddafi’s subjects, it seems. Had the timing been a bit different, Seahawk might have been able to reap the rewards for its decision to focus on Gulf of Mexico shelf oil reserves. As it is, Hercules has enjoyed its diversification into international waters; apart from its domestic shallow water rigs, more are on contract overseas hauling up the hallowed black stuff which just goes to show, we should never put all our eggs into one basket. It raises that most obvious of connections between Tripoli and Texas (!) the idea that, though 6,000 miles apart, the crisis in the former may have played some part in saving the smaller oil and gas players in the latter, although Seahawk cited the lack of drilling licenses being given out post-Macondo as its main downfall. (Let’s see how long that lasts as global demand grows! Cynical? Moi??)

So goodbye then, Seahawk. It’s been an interesting experiment in focusing on one area that has gone through hell and back enough times in the last few quarters to earn itself a loyalty card, and with its creaking, ageing rigs conceived at roughly the same time I was. Only time will tell if Hercules – soon-to-be the largest jack-up rig contractor in the murky, shallow waters of the Gulf of Mexico – has over-stretched itself. I wonder what the new entity will be called: Hercule-Hawk? Seacule? So many possibilities…

Failed to mention that we started jacking up the kitchen Saturday. Its been annoying me that it slopes and the advice from others was to shim the floor or pour a leveling cement in the kitchen! However the way the kitchen was built (as a seperate addition) and that it was the far outside corner that was low, I was convinced that it could be jacked up. I mentioned it to Jimmy and when I told him it was 3 inches low he said ‘woo ee, i dont know about that’. Yet, Saturday we tore some siding off the outside and saw that the corner was deteriorated and that it quite possibly just sank over time. So we started jacking and got it up a good 1.5 inches. It was getting late and we didnt have and good footing to support the floor anyway so we left it there. Thats why the new footing is going it, so we can raise it the rest of the way and support everything properly. I’m excited about it since it means the floor will not need any goofy shimming.
