Having been born in 1946, I am considered to be a “baby-boomer.” In fact, the baby-boomer generation began with Americans born in 1946.

My father met my mother in 1944 while he was in the Navy, fighting in World War 2, and she was a comptometer operator in San Francisco. He was discharged in 1945, they married and I was born in June of 1946, along with over 3,400,000 other Americans, thereby “starting a boom” in the population that continued through 1964.

In the Spring of 1964, I graduated from St. Dominic High School in O’Fallon, MO, and five years later, in the Spring of 1969, I graduated from Truman State University (aka Northeast Missouri State University).

As you can see, I was in high school and college during the “sixties” – the time when many expressions we currently assume always had meaning, actually came into existence. So, what are some of these expressions that are used when referring to that era?

The following are all expressions that I remember from the sixties. I have each expression in hypertext, in case you would like to read more about them. Also, in parenthesis, is the time in my life when I first heard the expression.

Sex, Drugs and Rock N Roll (in college)

Make Love, Not War (in college)

Flower Power (in college)

Hippies (in college)

Beatlemania (in high school)

Woodstock (Summer after graduation from college)

Motown (in high school)

Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out (in college)

Civil Rights Movement (in high school)

Yippies (in college)

Man Walking On The Moon (Summer after graduation from college)

Along with the expressions mentioned above, there are many pictures and/or symbols that reflect that era – the time when many baby boomers “came of age.” I hope you will find the pictures, at the beginning of this posting, interesting and enlightening.

Ok, now you can see a little of what this baby boomer encountered during the sixties. Perhaps, I should rephrase the question in the title and write, “What does the beginning baby boomers’ generation have to be thankful for?” Should we be thankful for Beatlemania? Should we be thankful for Woodstock? Should we be thankful for the civil rights movement? Should we be thankful for a man walking on the moon? Should we be thankful for … I say, YES!

These are all important parts of our history. They helped shape our society into one that is much more diverse and rich in population, culture, art, politics, music, science, etc. We all need to be thankful for our history that helped us learn and grow into a generation that has more education, more privileges and a greater quality of life than any previous generation.

I’m thankful today for my life – truly a gift, which is why it is called the present!

Happy Thanksgiving To All!

I didn’t grow up with Santa Claus. Being raised Catholic meant that we focused more on the Birth of

I didn’t grow up with Santa Claus. Being raised Catholic meant that we focused more on the Birth of Jesus as the reason for Christmas. Add to that, coming from an Asian country, the idea of a white bearded man dressed in red and bearing gifts was a bit foreign. Plus we didn’t have chimneys.

When my eldest son was born, we made sure he had all the traditional Christmas trappings – Jesus born in a manger, and yes, Santa Claus. Our house in Southern New Jersey had a chimney so surely Santa had a way into our home to deliver presents – and to get to the cookies we had lovingly baked from scratch. We prepared reindeer food out of oats and tinsel and scattered it outside the front door. We even had a picture taken with Santa at the mall!

My boys with Mr. and Mrs. Claus at a private home. You can have Santa visit your home for a fee and it's all for charity.

I stuck Christmas cards and photos onto the fridge and one day my then 2.5 y.o. son observed that the Santa in his photos was different from the Santa in Amanda’s photo. That was tricky. I explained that these were “assistant Santas” and that the real Santa was in the North Pole. He wrote a letter to Santa but I don’t think my explanation really satisfied him. It seems he went on “believing” for our sake and naturally, for the presents. I didn’t think he “believed” again until his baby brother was born two years later. It was as if Santa became “real” again and sharing the customs and traditions with his brother brought this mystery back to life.

So if you are looking to get a photo with the Man around Orange County one of these days, you could go to the mall or you could check out one of these cool events.

Take the night train and meet Santa. At the Irvine Park Railroad, activities include riding the Christmas train, storytime with Mrs. Claus, games, and more.

Take the night train with Santa

This event is in Long Beach but my fabulous friends Laura and Tracy organized it and it’s for a good cause. It’s more intimate than the other Santa sightings – with lots of activities beyond the usual photo op. The fundraiser is Sunday, December 6th from 6 – 8 PM. 100% proceeds go to Breast Cancer Angels.
Another cool Santa sighting will be at the Orange County Market Place @ the Fairgrounds. On Saturday November 28th, Santa Claus will arrive in a red 1929 Ford Roadster assisted by “Twinkie the Elf.” There will also be a toy and clothing drive that weekend. Bring a new toy or new clothing (unwrapped) for free admission, and a free 4X6″ photo with Santa on day of your visit.

Of course, if you want to meet the man and the Mouse, hop on over to Disneyland and head on over to Big Thunder Ranch to hang out with Mr. and Mrs. Claus.

And with that I leave you with this little ditty.

Reports from the U.K. tabloid newspaper, The Daily Star have reported that in 1996 the then, 37 year-old pop star had 3-D image scans in preparation for a possible robot clone.

The pop star had hoped to capture his one-time iconic and powerful image before it totally began to breakdown, Jackson wanted to document his appearence while he still could. The 3-D image scans were to be used to bring the pop star’s timeless image to life in future movies, music videos, and video games.

The scans came to public attention after an unknown American businessman has stated that he is looking to sell the rights.

“The thing about this data is it immortalised him at the age of 37, before his nose was disfigured and when he was in the prime of life,” the unknown businessman revealed.

Following Jackson’s death earlier this year, these new scans could mean a new future for the Gloved One from beyond the grave.

Today I went to the cinema and saw the documentary film MJ-TII. I had been wanting to see it for a while after reading in reviews how good it was. I have to say though that while I enjoyed it, it was not really what I thought it was going to be. For those who maybe haven’t heard of it before, the film pulls together all the rehearsal footage captured from Michael Jackson’s final 50 date concert tour, ‘This Is It’. Even for a music documentary I had been expecting more interviews, and there were none. Especially as it says that’s what’s coming up in the opening blurb. The film really just gives a taste of what fans could have expected from the concert had Jackson lived to perform it. While undoubtedly a talented singer and dancer I was hoping to see many more interviews, perhaps some retrospective ones too, but the only time there was someone talking it lasted for seconds. Because of this, for me, the film got a little tedious in the middle as footage goes from song, to song, to song. The most interesting, I thought, was the segment for ‘Thriller‘. I would say overall that it is worth a look, but probably one look only unless you’re a die hard MJ fan. Not one for the DVD collection, it’s enjoyable but not spectacular. See it if you’re curious. Thanks for reading.

Today is more about trains and planes than automobiles, so I didn’t have my usual commute soun

Today is more about trains and planes than automobiles, so I didn’t have my usual commute soundtrack to rely on. But as I waited on the train platform this morning to go into the city, a too-perky businessman behind me kept whistling to himself. Just bits and pieces, nothing identifiable, until suddenly it was: “I’ll Be There.”

Something about his whistling led me to believe it was the Mariah version, and it’s only just occurred to me, seven hours later, that it could well have been the Jackson Five version. Of course, I knew her version long before I ever knew there was an original — a fact that was a source of much merriment for my sister and brother-in-law when they discovered it.

Anyhow, I’ve been thinking about Mariah off and on all day. Mostly off, I’ll admit. But occasionally her curls and her teeth and her boobs have wandered through my brain. I seem to have a grudging respect for her, I’m realizing. I wrote her off in the late ’80s and early ’90s as a vapid pop star whose voice not only shattered glass but near about shattered my eardrums. But here she still is, surviving one career disaster after another, always resurfacing, and by all appearances (aka random commercials where she allows people to say they made out with her) having a pretty good sense of humor about it all too.

Just look over your shoulder. She’ll be there.

Michael Jackson & The Jackson Five A Message From Dr. Guy The recent release of the film This Is

A Message From Dr. Guy

The recent release of the film This Is It documenting rehearsals leading up to a series of ill-fated concerts—his first in ten years—brings into sharp relief all of the things that his fans want to remember. In a word: the dude was bad. One of the most amazing aspects of this story are the millions of fans across the widest demographic spectrum that Jackson’s musicianship attracted. The movie begins with young dancers from all over the planet converging on auditions for the show. In testimonials reminiscent of A Chorus Line, they recount what an impact MJ had on their lives and artistry.

And I can’t forget about my own generation and me. Michael and I were born one month apart in 1958. As a young person interested in music, I (and many of my generation) identified strongly with the Jackson 5 when they burst on the scene. The little prodigy at the helm of ship Jackson quite specifically blew us away. We were then in the high years of the Black Power Movement. Everyone in the black archipelago of working class, urban Afro-America was “bigging up” to all things “black”—culture, pride, potential, solidarity, mobility. There was plenty of “Yes, We Can” in the air though expressed in shorthand: “Black is Beautiful.” When I was a kid, the size and shape of our newly grown “naturals” or Afros were compared to one of the Jackson brothers. As we talked about MJ’s passing, my aunt recalled that she had bought my cousin, her pre-teen son, a special birthday present: a Jackson 5 outfit. She explained her joy to purchase the last one in the department store and still remembered how proud he was to sport it. “They made us proud,” she said, and gave us some to aspire to for our own family.

Jackson Five – I Want You Back & ABC

These palpable yearnings for social equality were expressed both explicitly and symbolically in musical practice. The Jackson 5 embodied these aspirations at this historical moment for a number of reasons. First, there’s always been something fascinating about family musical groups. Indeed, this talented, courteous, visible and loving nuclear family was just what the “black is beautiful project” needed at the time. Our interest in them might also support a widely held belief about the mysteries of musical talent itself—that it is “natural,” and that there are those among us who inherit the gift and don’t have to work as hard as others to achieve excellence. Add to this idea the fact that music making is an extremely social matter, binding musicians and listeners together in powerful relationships, and you begin to understand some of the reasons why watching MJ in action, looking strong and in control, is such a powerful experience.

With the King of Pop gone, this film retrospective of him in rehearsal allows us a precious opportunity to peak behind the heavily mediated curtain of his huge celebrity, a glimpse however edited and calculated for entertainment value. The film itself is organized around footage of him diligently preparing one or another of his powerful hit songs, each of them defining anthems of their moment, enduring in their appeal. Watching a master pull the strings of the production, coordinating—together with his choreographer, producer, music director, and technical staff— each element of the show, the dancing, the singing, the dramatic contours, the instrumental accompaniment, ones gets true sense of a person doing exactly what he was put on earth to do. Gently exhorting and correcting his fellow musicians “in love,” MJ appears to be at home in his skin, a metaphor that I find sadly ironic to write, especially given the river of ink that’s been spilled about his appearance.

Any artist will find this film fascinating, as it seems to intentionally focus on creative process. Split screens allow us to see him on different days working over the same piece, providing a theme and variations, a quality that one associates with jazz and not the hyper pop in which he specialized. MJ explores the potential of each groove, vamp, and move for all of its emotive potential and dramatic potency. Another takeaway for anyone who tries to create new music—or any other art form for that matter—is the degree to which MJ’s aesthetic palette was a complex mosaic of American art forms from Ziegfield Follies, classic Hollywood cinema, a heated dance contest during a black block party, a 4th of July fireworks display, or even the high wire, high voltage performance cadences of African American preachers.

To my ears, he could never achieve the stunning vocal acrobatics of his very early years. His note choices, grown-up oral declamations, subtle rhythmic play with the timeline, his shout chorus improvisations together with his controlled, evenly distributed timbre solidified his reputation as a soul strutting-Wunderkind. But no matter how much his comparatively diminished vocals brought to a performance, he obviously conceived of performance events as multi-faceted, approached from every visual, kinetic, musical, and dramatic angle possible. As this film shows us, this was very, very hard work. And work that meant understanding how to build a team of collaborators whose job was to infuse into the power of his brand the best ideas and unsurpassed execution.

With the illusion of “pop ease” removed and the mortality of this uniquely endowed star framing our experience of this film, This Is It offers up some lessons that will hopefully linger as the years roll on and the critics contemplate the long haul of MJ’s body of work. Most importantly, it was not the trappings of his pop star machine nor how the larger media responded that should totally shape our musical impressions of the man. Although we understand that his celebrity allowed him to make his gifts larger than life, it should not have the last word. One is left wondering if could we could ever imagine a musical landscape where a man could be at home making poly rhythms visible and pop grooves nourishing might possess a popularity that would not become cannibalistic and self-afflicting? Perhaps, one day. While it might be difficult to succeed as this seemingly impossible goal, as MJ stated more than once to his killer band in the film: “that’s why we rehearse.”

I have a problem with Joe Jackson. No, I don’t personally know Joe Jackson, but in my opinion

I have a problem with Joe Jackson. No, I don’t personally know Joe Jackson, but in my opinion he is one of those fellas who you can smell the jerk oozing through his pours. I may be wrong, but I believe that having Joe Jackson as a father was a major contribution to Michael Jackson’s “issues”. I know that MJ fans hate to admit that Michael had some “issues”, but let’s face facts, he did.

I think these issues began way back in the day when Poppa Joe decided that his boys would form a group and make him some money. Joe Jackson claims that the movie The Jacksons was not a completely true picture of life in the Jackson home, but most people, myself included, believe that Joe was nothing to play with. He claims that he never beat his children and that as a matter of fact, Katherine, their mother spanked the children more than he did, since he was away from home a lot, working two jobs. I can believe that Katherine spanked….and I can definitely believe that Joe beat.

click here to watch Joe Jackson on Larry King Live.

Then there has been Joe’s heinous behavior since Michael Jackson passed away. At the BET Awards 2009 Joe was interviewed on the red carpet and he showed no compassion and honestly seemed as if he had no clue as to how the rest of his family was doing. Neither did he show much concern or signs of grief for losing a son. Not only did he seem detached from the happenings of the family, but Joe seemed to care more about his own “career.” While being interviewed by John Lemon of CNN Joe Jackson went on to give a shameless plug of his new record company and had his publicist to read a prepared statement.

It has also been said that Joe has approached Michael’s children in an attempt to have them form a music group and do some touring. Joe says this is a bunch of jive, but in my opinion showing no compassion for the death of your own son is more than a bunch of jive.

Video of Joe on the red carpet acting like a jive turkey.

Regardless of what Joe has to say, there is some underlying reason why his son would write him out of his will. There has to be some reason his wife of over fifty years lives in one home and he lives in another. There definitely is a problem and I think that problem is Joe Jackson!

Michael Jackson

“…Michael Joseph Jackson (August 29, 1958 – June 25, 2009) was an American recording artist, entertainer and businessman. The seventh child of the Jackson family, he made his début to the professional music scene at the age of 11 as a member of The Jackson 5 in 1969, and began a solo career in 1971 while still a member of the group. Referred to as the “King of Pop”[2] in subsequent years, his 1982 album Thriller is the world’s best-selling record of all time[3] and four other solo studio albums are also among the world’s best-selling records: Off the Wall (1979), Bad (1987), Dangerous (1991) and HIStory (1995).

In the early 1980s, he became a dominant figure in popular music and the first African-American entertainer to amass a strong crossover following on MTV. The popularity of his music videos airing on MTV, such as “Beat It”, “Billie Jean” and Thriller — widely credited with transforming the music video from a promotional tool into an art form — helped bring the relatively new channel to fame. Videos such as “Black or White” and “Scream” made Jackson an enduring staple on MTV in the 1990s. With stage performances and music videos, Jackson popularized a number of physically complicated dance techniques, such as the robot and the moonwalk. His distinctive musical sound and vocal style influenced many hip hop, pop and contemporary R&B artists. While Jackson was a member of Generation Jones [4][5], his influence impacted multiple generations.

Jackson donated and raised millions of dollars for beneficial causes through his foundation, charity singles and support of 39 charities. Other aspects of his personal life, including his changing appearance and behavior, generated significant controversy, damaging his public image. Though he was accused of child sexual abuse in 1993, the criminal investigation was closed due to lack of evidence and Jackson was not charged. The singer had experienced health concerns since the early 1990s and conflicting reports regarding the state of his finances since the late 1990s. Jackson married twice and fathered three children, all of which caused further controversy. In 2005, Jackson was tried and acquitted of further sexual abuse allegations and several other charges.

One of the few artists to have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, his other achievements include multiple Guinness World Records — including one for “Most Successful Entertainer of All Time”—13 Grammy Awards, 13 number one singles in his solo career — more than any other male artist in the Hot 100 era and the sale of 750 million records worldwide.[6] Jackson’s highly publicized personal life, coupled with his successful career, made him a part of popular culture for almost four decades. Jackson died on June 25, 2009, aged 50.[7] The specific cause of death is yet to be determined.[2] Before his death, Jackson had announced a 50 date sell-out This Is It comeback tour, in London, England.[8] …”

We will Rock You’(Queen) si bineinteles ‘BEAT IT’(MJ), blocand astfel circulatia in Piata Lucian Blaga.

We’ll see.

Invatamant care nu introduce in programa scolara opere apartinand autorilor in viata doar dupa ce acestia se sting…? ETC.

Livia

SPECIAL THANKS TO:

“Multumim tuturor participantilor pentru cel mai mare FlashMob din tara, fara voi nu am fi reusit.” – Trupa Boemdance

How can one figure out what to say upon hearing of the passing of someone like Michael Jackson? Even that statement doesn’t make any sense; there is, and never will be, anyone else like Michael Jackson. There aren’t many celebrities who we can look to and come close to what Michael Jackson has meant to so many of us throughout our lives. The closest names we can think of are Brooke Shields and Sammy Davis, Jr. They make the list because they were in the public eye since they were children, Brooke with her first advertisements at the age of 10, and Sammy when he was performing with his father and bandmates from the age of 3. Neither one of them ever attained quite the significance of Michael Jackson, though. ÂFor instance, Michael Jackson, in a weird way, aged in reverse, almost like Benjamin Button, the movie with Brad Pitt. As a child, he was already an adult beyond his years, helping the family make deals, being the leader of his singing group from the age of 5, and singing and dancing as though he was already a seasoned performer of years much further than he could have come close to. ÂCompare that to the Michael Jackson who took the world by storm with the Thriller album, the man-child who, now that he had unlimited wealth, determined not to be made to grow up. He built the ultimate child’s paradise, “Michael Jackson“, in Neverland Ranch, and then invited children, as playmates, to come and play with him. Then, over the years, as he continued to age, he fought it by eventually having kids of his own, and playing games with them as though he were still the biggest kid in the room. ÂBeyond all of that, though, was the music, and the dancing. He touched our souls, first with his brothers. From the time America heard “I Want You Back”, then saw them on the Ed Sullivan Show, it was already determined that there was no comparison with family groups that had come before them, such as the Osmond Brothers or the Brothers Gibb. Indeed, this was something drastically different; these guys had a soul, and its front man was named Michael.  Who didn’t remember the soulful way this child-man sang love ballads with the emotion of someone who’d actually been through them? Songs like “I’ll Be There” and “Got To Be There” would have made you cry if you were allowed to cry as a young man; the girls indeed did cry. The ballads would be balanced with songs like “ABC” or “Dancing Machine”, where everyone I knew tried to figure out how he did that special robot dance that not even his brothers could emulate. Then we moved on, and saw Michael Jackson and his brothers grow up, and grow out, leaving Motown and establishing themselves as an independent force with three group albums, one of which included the number one hit song helping to bring the 70’s to a close called “Shake Your Body Down To The Ground.” Who could have known that would be the last truly big song that the Jackson brothers would have as a group, and what was about to happen for their brother Michael? What happened? Most people don’t know this, but the music industry was crashing down. Record sales weren’t doing all that well. We had all learned how to record music off the radio, and it didn’t matter that it wasn’t all that clear. MTV had come out, and we were starting to watch videos. But there was no black music on MTV except for one old video of Jimi Hendrix playing a song few people remembered, “Are You Experienced.” Then CBS Records, whom Michael Jackson had moved to as an independent musical force, gave an ultimatum to MTV; play Michael Jackson’s video or never get to play another video from a CBS Records artist. ÂThat it had to come to that is shocking, especially in light of the fact that Michael’s second individual album (he’s had the album “Ben” released as a solo album back in the early 70’s) had gone to number one and produced four chart topping hits, including “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough”. Sure, MTV had its worries; the first song released from the album, “The Girl Is Mine” with Paul McCartney, wasn’t quite the style of music MTV wanted to associate itself with, even if the song did go to number one. ÂIf, “Michael Jackson“, someone with his pedigree couldn’t get on MTV, what would it be worth? CBS was resting a lot of hopes on the back of Michael Jackson, and eventually bullied MTV into putting “Billie Jean” on its station. ÂTo say it was an instant hit is insufficient. People loved the driving beat to the song, and saw a much different looking, grown up performer than what they were used to. Then they saw him perform on the Motown 25th Anniversary Show, and the rest is history. Thriller sold more albums than any other record in history, breaking so many records that will never be broken, and saving the record industry. Indeed, if one looks at the true golden age of music, it would be the period between when Michael Jackson released Thriller and when he released the Bad album. That was the period of the mega-album; without Thriller, Prince’s Purple Rain album, Bruce Springsteen’s Born In The USA album, and U2’s Joshua Tree may never have sold the number of albums that they did. Thriller was to the 80’s album what Saturday Night Fever by the Bee Gees was to the age of disco, and Peter Frampton’s album Frampton Comes Alive did for rock. ÂWhat was the difference? Michael Jackson didn’t only do music; he did dance. And he did it better than anyone else ever had except for Gene Kelly. The dance made the music a part of our lives, and extended the popularity of both Michael Jackson and his craft. And, what made it so special is that we got to see the evolution of the artist right before our eyes. Many of us grow up along with him, and that made him special to us. We could recall what was going on in our lives when his songs came out, and how they made us feel better. ÂAnd he kept coming back to us more and more often. We had Dangerous; we had HIStory. We had Invincible. We had the videos. We had “We Are The World.” We had more coming, and we were all looking forward to that, plus the upcoming concerts that he said were the last hurrah. And then it was gone in an instant. No one saw it coming, that’s for sure. Two days after Ed McMahon, hours after Farrah Fawcett, and with the knowledge of how sick Walter Cronkite was, who could believe the breaking news alerts that Michael Jackson was being taken to the hospital after cardiac arrest? Who could believe the rumors that he was in a coma? Who could believe the rumors that he had passed away? And he had a cardiologist with him? Unthinkable. Yet, it was true, and it shocked us. It made us take a look at our mortality. It made us feel bad. But we weren’t ready to feel bad. Instead, we wanted to feel good, because deep down inside, we know that he did all of this for us from the beginning. He didn’t seem, in person, like the happiest guy in the world over the last decade. With good reason, it seems, things we’re not going into. And yet, when all was said and done, all he cared about, other than his kids, was his fans. He wanted us to enjoy him, his music, his dancing, and all that he had to offer for us. ÂIf you’re like me, after you got over the initial shock and had to pull yourself away from all the overwhelming news stories, you pulled out your Michael Jackson music, the solo stuff and the group stuff, the songs he did with others such as “We Are The World” and “State Of Shock” with Mick Jagger and “Scream” with his sister Janet, and we listened to those songs over and over. I listened for days; I’m still listening a week later. ÂAs a younger person, I did that same thing. I’d buy the latest Jackson Five album, or the newest Michael Jackson album, on the day it was released and I’d play it over and over for weeks. Then, when everyone else caught up, I’d feel special because I already had it. I didn’t have to wait to see if I was going to like any of the songs first; I bought it because I knew he wasn’t going to let me down, that he was going to have songs I just had to have in my life. ÂTo the end, he controlled my emotions. He helped make me happy. He helped make me reflect on different aspects of my life. He made me think about things such as racism and poverty and violence. He helped make me whole. And I wasn’t alone. He touched the world, the most famous entertainer in history, bigger than Elvis, possibly bigger than Muhammad Ali and Michael Jordan and Princess Diana. In the first week after his passing, 9 of the top 10 albums on the Billboard charts were Michael Jackson related albums. That didn’t happen with Elvis passed away. It’s hard to totally convey what Michael Jackson meant to my life and the lives of others in a few words; look how many words this has taken already, and there’s so much more that can be said. Michael Jackson was all about us. He sacrificed his life, his privacy, his happiness, so we could all feel better about our lives. It doesn’t get more selfless than that. R.I.P., Michael; we’ll miss you more than we’ll ever know.

How can one amount out what to say aloft audition of the casual of anyone like Michael Jackson? Even that account doesn’t accomplish any sense; there is, and never will be, anyone abroad like Michael Jackson.

There aren’t abounding celebrities who we can attending to and appear abutting to what Michael Jackson has meant to so abounding of us throughout our lives. The abutting names we can anticipate of are Brooke Shields and Sammy Davis, Jr. They accomplish the account because they were in the accessible eye aback they were children, Brooke with her aboriginal advertisements at the age of 10, and Sammy if he was assuming with his ancestor and bandage mates from the age of 3. Neither one of them anytime accomplished absolutely the acceptation of Michael Jackson, though.

For instance, Michael Jackson, in a awe-inspiring way, age-old in reverse, about like Benjamin Button, the cine with Brad Pitt. As a child, he was already an developed above his years, allowance the ancestors accomplish deals, getting the baton of his singing accumulation from the age of 5, and singing and dancing as admitting he was already a acclimatized aerialist of years abundant added than he could accept appear abutting to.

Compare that to the Michael Jackson who took the apple by storm with the Thriller album, the man-child who, now that he had absolute wealth, bent not to be fabricated to abound up. Then, over the years, as he connected to age, he fought it by eventually accepting kids of his own, and arena amateur with them as admitting he were still the bigger kid in the room.

Beyond all of that, though, was the music, and the dancing. He affected our souls, aboriginal with his brothers. Songs like “I’ll Be There” and “Got To Be There” would accept fabricated you cry if you were accustomed to cry as a adolescent man; the girls absolutely did cry. The ballads would be counterbalanced with songs like “ABC” or “Dancing Machine”, area anybody I knew approved to amount out how he did that appropriate apprentice ball that not even his brothers could emulate.

Then we confused on, and saw Michael Jackson and his brothers abound up, and abound out, abrogation Motown and establishing themselves as an absolute force with three accumulation albums, one of which included the amount one hit song allowance to accompany the 70’s to a abutting alleged “Shake Your Body Down To The Ground.” Who could accept accepted that would be the endure absolutely big song that the Jackson brothers would accept as a group, and what was about to appear for their brother Michael?

What happened? A lot of humans don’t apperceive this, but the music industry was abolition down. Almanac sales weren’t accomplishing all that well. But there was no atramentous music on MTV except for one old video of Jimi Hendrix arena a song few humans remembered, “Are You Experienced.” Again CBS Records, whom Michael, “Michael Jackson“, Jackson had confused to as an absolute agreeable force, gave an claiming to MTV; play Michael Jackson’s video or never get to play addition video from a CBS Annal artist.

That it had to appear to that is shocking, abnormally in ablaze of the actuality that Michael’s additional, “Michael Jackson“, abandoned anthology (he’s had the anthology “Ben” appear as a abandoned anthology aback in the aboriginal 70’s) had gone to amount one and produced four blueprint topping hits, including “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough”. Sure, MTV had its worries; the aboriginal song appear from the album, “The Girl Is Mine” with Paul McCartney, wasn’t absolutely the appearance of music MTV capital to accessory itself with, even if the song did go to amount one.

If anyone with his full-blooded couldn’t get on MTV, what would it be worth? CBS was comatose a lot of hopes on the aback of Michael Jackson, and eventually afraid MTV into putting “Billie Jean” on its station.

To say it was an burning hit is insufficient. Humans admired the active exhausted to the song, and saw a abundant altered looking, developed up aerialist than what they were acclimated to. Again they saw him accomplish on the Motown 25th Anniversary Show, and the blow is history. Thriller awash added albums than any added almanac in history, breaking so abounding annal that will never be broken, and extenuative the almanac industry. Indeed, if one looks at the accurate aureate age of music, it would be the aeon amid if Michael Jackson appear Thriller and if he appear the Bad album. That was the aeon of the mega-album; afterwards Thriller, Prince’s Purple Rain album, Bruce Springsteen’s Born In The USA album, and U2’s Joshua Tree may never accept awash the amount of albums that they did. Thriller was to the 80’s anthology what Saturday Night Fever by the Bee Gees was to the age of disco, and Peter Frampton’s anthology Frampton Comes Alive did for rock.

What was the difference? Michael Jackson didn’t abandoned do music; he did dance. And he did it bigger than anyone abroad anytime had except for Gene Kelly. The ball fabricated the music a allotment of our lives, and continued the acceptance of both Michael Jackson and his craft. And, what fabricated it so appropriate is that we got to see the change of the artisan appropriate afore our eyes. Abounding of us abound up forth with him, and that fabricated him appropriate to us. We could anamnesis what was traveling on in our lives if his songs came out, and how they fabricated us feel better.

And he kept advancing aback to us added and added often. We had Dangerous; we had HIStory. We had Invincible. We had the videos. We had “We Are The World.” We had added coming, and we were all searching advanced to that, additional the accessible concerts that he said were the endure hurrah.

And again it was gone in an instant. No one saw it coming, that’s for sure. Two canicule afterwards Ed McMahon, hours afterwards Farrah Fawcett, and with the ability of how ailing Walter Cronkite was, who could accept the breaking account alerts that Michael Jackson was getting taken to the hospital afterwards cardiac arrest? Who could accept the rumors that he was in a coma? Who could accept the rumors that he had anesthetized away? And he had a cardiologist with him? Unthinkable.

Yet, it was true, and it abashed us. It fabricated us yield a attending at our mortality. It fabricated us feel bad. But we weren’t accessible to feel bad. Instead, we capital to feel good, because abysmal down inside, we apperceive that he did all of this for us from the beginning. He didn’t seem, in person, like the happiest guy in the apple over the endure decade. With acceptable reason, it seems, things we’re not traveling into. And yet, if all was said and done, all he cared about, added than his kids, was his fans. He capital us to adore him, his music, his dancing, and all that he had to action for us.

If you’re like me, afterwards you got over the antecedent shock and had to cull yourself abroad from all the cutting account stories, you pulled out your Michael Jackson music, the abandoned being and the accumulation stuff, the songs he did with others such as “We Are The World” and “State Of Shock” with Mick Jagger and “Scream” with his sister Janet, and we listened to those songs over and over. I listened for days; I’m still alert a anniversary later.

As a adolescent person, I did that aforementioned thing. I’d buy the latest Jackson Five album, or the newest Michael Jackson album, on the day it was appear and I’d play it over and over for weeks. Then, if anybody abroad bent up, I’d feel appropriate because I already had it. I didn’t accept to delay to see if I was traveling to like any of the songs first; I bought it because I knew he wasn’t traveling to let me down, that he was traveling to accept songs I just had to accept in my life.

To the end, he controlled my emotions. He helped accomplish me happy. He helped accomplish me reflect on altered aspects of my life. He fabricated me anticipate about things such as racism and abjection and violence. He helped accomplish me whole. And I wasn’t alone. He affected the world, the a lot of acclaimed amateur in history, bigger than Elvis, possibly bigger than Muhammad Ali and Michael Jordan and Princess Diana. In the aboriginal anniversary afterwards his passing, 9 of the top 10 albums on the Billboard archive were Michael Jackson accompanying albums. That didn’t appear with Elvis anesthetized away.

It’s harder to absolutely back what Michael Jackson meant to my activity and the lives of others in a few words; attending how abounding words this has taken already, and there’s so abundant added that can be said. Michael Jackson was all about us. He sacrificed his life, his privacy, his happiness, so we could all feel bigger about our lives. It doesn’t get added affectionate than that. R.I.P., Michael; we’ll absence you added than we’ll anytime know.

I caught this piece on twitter via @sarahsosincere. The original post is from newsweek.com

Asked to appear on the Australian variety hour Hey Hey It’s Saturday as a guest judge, Harry Connick Jr. sputters in disbelief when a Jackson 5 impersonation group entirely in blackface appears onstage. He first gives the group a 0 scorecard for the performance while the audience boos; later, at about 4:40 into the clip, Connick launches into an impassioned race-relations lectureexplaining why blackface is a bad thing. “If I knew that was going to be a part of the show, I definitely wouldn’t have done it,” Connick declares on live TV. The host appears genuinely surprised.

Black face? Really? This is how the Australians are doing it? The clip leaves me speechless. Apparently it’s cool that they did this on the variety show, according to the comments left on the post. The Australians who commented talk about the lack of race issues, etc. Maybe we take it too seriously in the states (for good reason). Eh, you check the vid and tell me how you feel.
