Up to 15,000 people are expected to pack the grounds of the Art Gallery Friday for the world’s

Up to 15,000 people are expected to pack the grounds of the Art Gallery Friday for the world’s biggest annual celebration of cannabis culture: 4/20.

Keep in mind if you want to avoid getting caught up in the horticultural hoopla the 700 Block of Howe St. will be closed from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.

A crowd that big is bound to be diverse, even if everyone is there for one reason. Here’s a rundown of the subcultures you can expect to find milling about in haze.

The Hard-Core Stoner

Jailed “Prince of Pot” Marc Emery‘s longtime friend Greg Williams says he has built up his marijuana tolerance through years of chronic, daily use.

“We function normally, we have a business and it runs smoothly and efficiently, and we smoke more pot than most other people could possibly imagine,” he says, talking about his day job at Marc Emery’s Cannabis Culture Headquarters on West Hastings St. “We’re not a bunch of stupid stoners. We just aren’t, and we can prove that any time of the day.”

So if you happen to see him at 4:20 throw some Trivial Pursuit questions his way.

The Office Tower Escapee

The event’s organizer, Jacob Hunter, says he was talking to some of Vancouver’s finest two years ago when they started laughing about what surveillance officers were seeing from overhead.

“From the overhead view they could see streams of people leaving the financial district towers and heading straight for the Art Gallery,” Hunter says. “You can really see after 4:30 the crowd starts to shift as kind of the hard-cores from earlier in the day get tired and start heading home.”

The Activist

No one in Vancouver is more visible in the fight for legalization these days than Jodie Emery, Marc Emery’s outspoken wife, and she’ll be one of the main speakers at Friday’s event.

She’ll make her trademark impassioned speech calling for the regulation and taxation of marijuana as the clock strikes 4:20, and be joined by Vancouver East NDP MP Libby Davies, as well as former B.C. NDP leadership candidate Dana Larsen.

The Overzealous Brownie-Muncher

Organizer Jacob Hunter has a warning for anyone with a sweet tooth.

“Generally speaking, we have an issue almost every year where people eat too many baked goods,” he says, noting there is a first aid tent for anyone who gets overcome.

His safety tips: Remember it takes an hour for baked goods to take effect, don’t eat more than one in a two-hour period, and definitely don’t combine with alcohol.

The Medicinal User

Hunter is also a medical marijuana license holder. After getting knee reconstruction surgery in 2010 for an extreme form of degenerative arthritis, his surgeon explained he is one of a few people who get no pain relief from opiates. Ibuprofen was incompatible with his condition, so he got his pot papers signed.

“On a day like 4/20 it’s just nice for medicinal users to kind of be out in the open and not have to feel like they’re a second-class citizen,” he says.

The Rasta

Kostaman is a dreadlocked musician who friends describe as a “white, Greek guy” with a “Rasta personality.”

He says there aren’t too many authentic Rastafarians in Vancouver — they tend to live in Toronto — but he does his best to represent the culture.

“The philosophy of Rasta is a spiritual philosophy. It’s one of love, hence the ‘one love,’” he says, explaining he got his Rasta education while living in Miami. “One vibration, one heart, one message.”

He’ll bring that message to the main stage at 3 p.m.

The Confused Tourist

Organizer Jacob Hunter says he’s heard reports of local hotels getting bookings from all over Canada from people planning to attend Vancouver’s 4/20 festivities.

But, he admits, not everyone who ends up at the Art Gallery knows what they’re in for.

“It’s funny, every year you get tour groups that are drawn by the music, wander in and just cannot believe what they’re seeing,” he says. “It’s always one of my favourites.”

Uploaded onto Youtube by the account MrXstacey, this video involves Mrs. Jodi Emery, Miss Nichole Seguin and Mr. Jacob Hunter who where planning to occupy Justice Minister Rob Nicholson’s office located in Niagara Falls, Ontario on June 10th of an unknown year. This video was posted just under three months before Marc Emery, of who they were protesting for, was sentenced to five years in a US jail for selling marijuana seeds across the border. Mrs. Emery approached the offices at first and only at their request for her identification did Mr. Hunter and the Miss. Nicole Seguin reveal themselves from their position around the corner. Police where called after Jodi Emery and Jacob Hunter wanted entry into said offices. Mr. Hunter was arrested, the officer claiming assault. Mr. Hunter claiming assault as well. When protestors arrived for the sit in is where things quickly escalated. Protestors that were arrested in conjunction, along with Mr. Hunter where later released the same day. This video is an abridged version with a link to the original video.

The video description is filled with propaganda about the “Free Marc campaign” emphasized by all capitals. According to the information given, Justice Minister Nicholson’s offices where targeted because he signed the extradition order for Mr. Emery to the US. What is echoed in both the description and in the protestors speech is that Mr. Emery did not enter the US to sell the seeds, yet was charged in the states and is currently serving out his sentence. Although that is true, he had not entered the US to sell the seeds, he still sold them through the mail, which once they entered the US Mr. Emery was subject to a whole host of charges. That fact of the matter is he did not need to be in the US to commit the crime because once the seeds crossed the border the crime was committed.

As to MrXstacey, the uploads to this account show an overwhelming support of the right to protest and very little videos involving any reference to cannabis. And perusing through this users history, they have posted about Newfoundland, B.C. and Surrey. This may mean that this user is local, meaning at least the Greater Regional Vancouver District area. Some videos include past news casts with alarmist re-titles and personal vlogs with edited scenes from television used to support claims. This might lend credence to an argument when there is none or vice versa. For instance, by inferring that this user’s argument had no merit, negative connotation where added to the readers perception of the user helping to disregard their argument and any future statements.

What I am inferring is that through careful editing it shows the police in a disparaging light and attempts to show the protestors without fault. Both videos are not without their own editing. Although how this particular incident started seems to be understood by both the police and the protestors. The advance party of the Free March campaign where prohibited from protesting in JM Nicohlson’s offices. Though both sides contributed to the eventual outcome. Did Mr. Hunter need to smoke a joint within five minuets of the police officer arriving? Probably not. Was it his right to do so, with his MMAR card? Yes. Was the police officers statement about the camera being viewed as a weapon, inflammatory? Yes. Did Mr. Hunter have to follow closely behind the officer, disregarding his instructions? No. He could have waited a short while. For the officer to gather information from inside the offices, perhaps convince those inside to reopen the offices to the protestors. Would that have happen? It is possible. Did the officer need to act so aggressive? Yes and no. Put in the same situation: outnumbered, one larger then you, smoking cannabis and not knowing how it effects him, not obeying your orders, following close on your heels and attempting to fight back; I would have reacted similar to the police officer. That being said the protestors have endured many aggressive tactics from the police in reference to their cannabis use. Often using decriminalized laws to seek the arrest or search for evidence for arrest because of involvement with the protest or because of partaking in cannabis. At about 4:22 in MrXstacey’s edited video and 8:15 in the full length video, the police officers body language completely changes. Shoulder haunches, head tucked in, firm grip on Mr. Hunter, not making eye contact or giving order or direct the protestors until another officer arrives aside from “calm down”. This is because a busload of protestors have arrived, immediately voicing opinions and crowding around the two officers. Many other situations have gone bad at this point.

Around 25 minuets in, in the original video, an officer explains the arrest procedure and processing but not necessarily answers any of Mrs. Emery’s and Miss. Seguin’s questions. 35 minuets in, they notice an RCMP officer who responds because “It’s an MP office.” Again side-stepping questions about the openness of the office.

There is an overwhelming support involving the event not necessarily the cause. Mainly revolving around the camera as a weapon statement. The commenters that disagree have their argument circle around the fact that cannabis is illegal and how it has affect their lives through various crimes.

How this blog relates to policing’s new visibility is through the medium. By the use of the internet, phones and cameras. After Mr. Hunter was put in handcuffs you can hear him proclaiming loudly that that device was streaming live to the internet. As Goldsmith explains through his article Policing’s New Visibility, the rising portability and accessibility of recording devices and the ability to share the information is what makes the police more visible to the public [even to others who where not present]. He argues even increases accountability. Take for instance, the Rodney King beating, mentioned many times in his article. Videos focus almost exclusively on the show of police brutality, ignoring what happened just before – Mr. King’s high-speed pursuit because he did not want to go to jail for DUI [Driving Under Intoxication]. But videos like Mr. King’s unnecessary beating can be edited for public release quite differently. Often times to show more sensationalism. Media outlets are also going through social media to search for stories. As the reader may have noticed an increase of Facebook or Myspace citing in your newscast.

The police both fear and respect this new wave of technologies. They fear it because any slip up, no matter how small may be blown out of portion, causing the police to lose face and ultimately their symbolic power and authority which means that they cannot command anyone to obey. They respect it, because it offers a unique view into both the offenders mind and offers supporting evidence during trial. Into the offenders mind, because everyone is as fond of making video as the police are of seizing it.

Peter B. F. Adams, Pension Application

Pension number S30.814 Virginia

Made application for pension on December 7, 1835, in Fayette County, Kentucky, age 75, states that he was born in Rowan County, North Carolina, March 11, 1759, but was a resident of Washington County, Kentucky, at time of application, and his age is according to a record which was last in the possession of his brother John Adams, a resident of North Carolina. He remained at the place of his birth until 1779 when he came to Kentucky with his uncle, Jacob Hunter, and remained at Boone’s Station until he settled in what is now known as Washington County, Kentucky, where he has resided ever since. He resided at Boone’s Station when he entered the service as a volunteer under Captain Hays, who was a son-in-law of Col. Daniel Boone in Col. Logan’s regiment and in that regiment he marched to the mouth of the Licking where it was joined with other troops under the command of General George Rogers Clark who ascended the Ohio in boats from Louisville, Kentucky, to the place of rendezvous. Col. McGary was with the troops but whether he commanded the other regiment, which was in the expedition, he does not remember. The army under the command of General Clark crossed the Ohio at that point and marched to the Old Chillocothe Town on Mad River where a severe battle was fought in which this affiant shared. He was not wounded there or since. The expedition did not leave the Indian country until the towns were all destroyed and their corn cut down when the troops returned to the mouth of Licking, at that point the regiments separated – General Clark descending the river to Louisville and Col. Logan’s regiment to returning to Boone’s Station and other stations from whence it had been collected. On that expedition he served to the best of his recollection and believes at least four months. The troops marched about the first of June 1780 on the above expedition.

As your affiant was first enrolled in Captain Hays Company, he was always reliable and liable to be called to duty. He was frequently called out during the remainder of the year 1780. Served five months tour 1780. He was ordered to Bryants Station 1782 where he remained until the seige of that station by the Indians in August of that year. He remembers all the circumstances of the seige which continued until the third day when the enemy retreated, but he refers from their detail as being unnecessary here. During the seige a reinforcement of about 40 men came to the station from Lexington, who remained in it until it was raised. Cap. Craig commanded in the station by the request of Garrison, although he had no commission as an officer.

About 180 men under Cols. Logan, Todd, Trigg, Boone, McGary and other officers, came up and immediately pursued the enemy to the Blue Licks, where the unfortunate battle took its name from that spot was fought. This affiant was not in that battle because he did not have a horse. In a few days 400 men were gathered to bury the dead.

This affiant served at least 17 1/2 months. He has one living witness, John Hunter, who is his cousin and whose deposition is given herewith and who lives in Jessamine County, Kentucky, and who came with him to Lexington to help him prepare his claim.

It is shown in the record that this John Hunter lived in the home of the said soldier Peter B. F. Adams family until after the Revolutionary War and having served with him in almost every instance referred to. He was a private in the same company in his tour to the Indian towns. This witness is also a pensioner.
