If you want something as stupid and as amusing at the same time, you may want to try this film out. As the film title suggest, it just pertains and caters to the testosterone filled Homo Sapien. I know a lot of people would’ve say that this film really sucked, well every one has their own taste and for me, it may not be one of the best films for this year but I know that this is one hell of an entertaining film.

After watching a few of Russ Meyer’s films this year, it was really appalling in some way; I suddenly remembered those Meyer films when I’ve seen this oh so recently. It was one of those days when you were hoping that Quentin Tarantino would make something like this but they ended up with Grindhouse a few years ago. Thank you sexploitation films for the nostalgia.

The film was provided in a Memento type of way; scenes were shown in the present then they would flashback scenes in a backward method. It was as if you’ll be able to see two climaxes in a span of ten minutes. Again, the plot is actually brainless as you’ve might seen it already though the funny thing is they were still able to create a newer plot twist and a probably newer ending. Or put it this way, read the script in paper and you might be impressed with how it was written.

Despite the sort of badly made Sin City-ish graphics, you might be amazed with how three women would go with that type of violence. The film would keep you moving. Even if you thought that the film will actually suck, you’ll end up wrong.

Again, you don’t need brains if you want to watch this film. The sexploitation provided was just enough to bring back nostalgia in this decade. And I think we have to thank Rick Jacobson, the director, for this film.

McGruff’s got nothing on Cyrus. Cyrus, a police dog with the Washington County Sheriff’s

McGruff’s got nothing on Cyrus.

Cyrus, a police dog with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, just took first place in the Regional K9 Narcotics Detector Dog Trials – top dog among 58 competitors.

Last year, the dog finished second in the competition, said Sheriff’s Deputy Ty Jacobson, Cyrus’s handler.

Gazette photo by Peter Cox Cyrus, a police dog with the Washington County Sheriff's Office, recently scored 199 out of a possible 200 in the Regional K9 Narcotics Detector Dog Trials to claim the top prize. The dog is shown here with his handler, Deputy Ty Jacobson.

Jacobson, who is from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, said his family always had dogs when he was growing up. But Cyrus, a 4-year-old Belgian Malinois/German Shepherd mix, has given him an entirely new respect for the species.

“I never really realized how incredible the sense of smell is on a dog,” he said.

His dogs growing up were smart, but nothing like this.

“With family dogs, you teach your dog basic tricks,” he said. “What our dogs do aren’t tricks, they’re trained to do a job. And it’s amazing what they can do.”

In the competition, Cyrus scored 199 points out of a possible 200, giving them the overall win. In the first leg, dogs have 10 minutes to search five cars and find two different narcotics stashed in two of the vehicles. In the second, they have 15 minutes to find two hidden packets of drugs within three rooms.

Cyrus is an aggressive alerter, meaning he scratches at the site of the drugs when he sniffs them out.

Jacobson got Cyrus in February 2007. A deputy has to apply to get a dog, and then go through an interview process and a physical in order to qualify.

“They want someone that is going to be able to keep up with the dog,” he said.

Cyrus, who was imported from Slovakia, now spends 24 hours a day with Jacobson. The dog stays at Jacobson’s Stillwater home, runs around in the yard and plays with Jacobson’s children

“He’s real good at home,” he said. “My kids will climb all over him and pull his ears. He has no problems with the kids. What’s amazing is he can be so good with the children and then when it’s time to work and he gets his command, he knows what he needs to do.”

At work, the dog is a key tool in crime fighting.

“He’s what we call a dual-purpose dog,” Jacobson said. “He does searches for narcotics, tracks, does building searches, apprehends people and can search for evidence.”

The dog has helped track down people who’ve fled crime scenes, found lost people and recovered key evidence in crimes.

Cyrus is one of seven dogs on the force with Washington County. The sheriff’s office has six dual-purpose dogs, which are German Shepherds or Belgian Malinois, and one, a lab, which is used strictly for searches.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office plans go get one K9 each year over the next five at $7,500 each.

Jacobson says they are not only a help in solving crimes, but also in protecting officers.

“If we have a burglary going on, instead of officers going in and risking their lives with someone who is potentially armed, we can send in a dog to keep our officers out of harm’s way,” he said.

But besides the tracking capabilities of the dog’s nose, just their presence can help.

“When someone commits crime and flees, if they get confronted by police and realize there is a police dog present, I think they are a lot quicker to give up than to go toe-to-toe with a police dog,” Jacobson said. “When they hear that bark, they are pretty quick to give up.”

Police dogs typically will stay in service until they have medical issues. At that point, they are retired.

“When they retire, the handlers given the opportunity to purchase the dog. I haven’t met a handler yet that hasn’t purchased their dog,” Jacobson said. “You spend 10 years with the dog, you get pretty attached to them.”

And probably people “of the cloth” from all denominations. We are a nation of faith. Jes

And probably people “of the cloth” from all denominations.

We are a nation of faith. Jesus angrily drove the money lenders out of the temple. How can we stand by and allow the borrowers to be driven out of their homes?

The fact is most of these victims were hunted down like a foxhunt, with strangers knocking on doors, experts giving them quiet assurance of how wonderful their house was and how much it was worth, how wonderful it was that the bank would approve such generous terms (because they weren’t playing with their own money), and with undisclosed yield spread premiums of unimaginable size sometimes in multiples of the mortgage amount itself.

I have already spoken about how in Florida they hired and got licenses for 10,000 mortgage brokers to act as bird dog originators — all 10,000 of them were convicted felons, mostly for economic crimes, many of whom just got out of jail. Translation: they needed people who would be willing to lie in order to get borrowers to sign. Yet that was not enough. “One theme emerging from these suits is how banks teamed up with pastors to win over new customers for subprime loans.”

It is probably not politically correct and even offensive to say that American society has one faith in common: money. Belief in money and in particular that almighty dollar is something that all of us seem to converge on from disparate facets of life, class levels and religious faith. The protestant ethic on which our country supposedly rests, is all but dead. People who conduct their lives according to the principles of hard work, building a foundation of quality and prospering in the end usually are derided as old-fashioned or even naive in “today’s marketplace.”

If you really want to know why this nonsensical mortgage meltdown could occur, look no further. For all the cries of “shame” and demands for justice, our society, as a whole is doing virtually nothing about making sure it never happens again and in fact has already launched the next round of speculation based upon a government bailout of the losses when they occur.

It no longer matters if you work hard. It doesn’t matter if you are honest. It doesn’t even matter if what you do is successful. You will be paid a king’s ransom as long as you are playing “the game.” When the cards come tumbling down, it doesn’t matter — you are rich beyond your wildest dreams and even if you have nothing left to do, you don’t need to work anyway. The fact that tens of millions of people can’t work, are NOT rich, and have no income or safety net is of no concern. It isn’t that these people all lack conscience. The inconvenient truth is that they are following the rules of our society.

One recurring theme coming up in many lawsuits is “business Model” adopted by the Top Dogs (Bank of America, Countrywide, Wells Fargo etc.) who simply repeated the multilevel marketing schemes that proliferate across our great land in search of another unearned dollar.

Just look at how much trouble we are having distributing flu shots and getting people to accept the flu shot. Channels of every type and place imaginable are hawking the shots (which by the way I think is a good thing, and yes, I got one) at tens of thousands of outlets and delivery points. MERS says it has 60+ million mortgage transactions in its data records. How do you reach 60 million homeowners?

Well it turns out to be easy in country where the overwhelming majority of the populace are people of “faith.”

I invite you all to take a look at “Did Christianity Cause the Crash?” by Hanna Rosin published in the current issue of The Atlantic, December 2009 at page 39.

A Case in Point: Beth Jacobson, witness for the prosecution in City of Baltimore vs. Wells Fargo. Just the facts Ma’am. Virtually none of the mortgage “specialists” any of us spoke to over the phone had any education, training or experience in mortgages, finance or even bookkeeping. They were trained on how to look like they were experts. They would lie to you eye to eye. And they were rewarded. “Sometimes the bank would send a Hummer limo to pick up Jacobson for a celebration, she says. She’d arrive at a bar and find all her co-workers drunk and her boss “doing body shots off a waitress.”

Like any “good idea” (without any sens of “enough”) the marketing model of establishing sales channels through houses of worship was irresistible. After all, congregants were in a vulnerable mood when they went to church, they were easily pacified by their faith in their clergyman, and any “Wealth Now” seminar assumes an aura of both credibility at the least and mandate from God at most. And the Pastor, the Church or some “program” of the church would get a $350 “donation.” It didn’t take long for those in the congregation who were prospecting for the next person they could fool to get the point — bring subprime mortgage candidates to the bank and get paid $350 per mortgage. So if they did 10 mortgages per week, they earned themselves $3500 per week.

The results are well known, but not particularly flushed out. People who are living lives of quiet desperation under a mountain of debt they would never escape suddenly saw the jackpot. And so while the mortgage meltdown was in its hay day their income jumped from what had been $35,000 per year to an av erage of $350,000 per year. And after 2-3 years they were convinced that they now were big earners. When the crash occurred, they were slow to realize or believe that they were no six figure earners and they never were. They were low five figure earners, and those jobs were no longer available so now they would need unemployment or other public assistance.

What bothers me is not that people of the cloth are like anyone else — subject to temptation and possibly who got there because of the protection it provides for all sorts of deviants or corruption. N0, what bothers me is that even as mainstream media publishes these stories, the underlying assumption is that the mortgage mess is still MOSTLY the fault of consumers whose eyes were too big for their stomachs.

And yet the victims continue to be portrayed as gamers who lost. That bothers me because until we get all the facts out on the table, there never be a solution to this mess, this confabulation.

Until there is real understanding of the facts, we will continue to protect the large banks that are “too big to fail” and continue to ignore the plight of the common man and woman. As long as we persist, we will not rebuild the middle class. Without a stable prospering middle class, we are nothing. That’s the real irony. The wealth needs to be in the middle class to have society that survives itself. Legally I have no doubt that the wealth is there but it has not been claimed. Practically, until Judges and lawyers and homeowners “get it” they will continue to blame the “borrower” and let the pretender lender do body shots “off the waitress.”

The topic of multiculturalism and diversity in the field of public administration is as all the read

The topic of multiculturalism and diversity in the field of public administration is as all the readings mentioned a relatively new topic, something that has not been even on the radar. My opinion is that a diverse organization that represents the various cultures of the people that they represent is something that we should strive for but I don’t believe that we should be cautious in how we approach creating these organizations. The three readings for this week all had their positive qualities. There were however questions about the extent of the work, which seems to be in its preliminary stage.

The article by Mitchell F. Rice was in my eyes the best of the three due in part to the fact that it was a clear and concise. It was timely in its relevance and Rice’s definition of cultural competency is something that fits the idea of a diverse and multicultural work place. We as public administrators should know about different cultures and should strive for more knowledge about ‘who’ we represent. An organization that has the knowledge of and is made up of the people it represents is an ‘ideal’, an ‘ideal’ that we should strive for. The diverse organization is only one of the variables that dictate whether it’s a good organization. It is not an easy task for an organization to achieve this ‘ideal’, it might not even be possible but Rice outlines several ways to try.

The article about women managers in public administration was a solid article in most respects. Jacobson, Palus and Bowling article is a sound scientific study about the management styles of women and men. My opinion is it that individuals rather than men and women differ in their management styles. I have been involved in organizations both private and public in which men and women were in the management roles, they had different styles but I would not define it as a distinctly male style or female style. I think it would be more important to look at the percentage of women in the organization versus the percentage in management. From my experience I have seen some difference in management styles between men and women, and the article seemed to reinforce that claim. I have seen the one female manager of an organization isolated from the other male manager because of her management style. The treatment she received was unfair to say the least. She did have some of the characteristics that the authors discussed such as managing more democratically and employing a less hierarchical style even though the greater organization was very hierarchical. This was a good article because it is relevant. I would be interested to see how these differences look in 10 years and in 20. I hypothesis that there will be some changes including more continuity in management and leadership styles of men and women because women will no long be fighting an uphill battle against men, who knows.

The third article that dealt with diversity and cultural differences in public organizations was David Pitts’. Overall, I believe that this was a good article but the data used in the study seems to be a little dated. I believe that this might have an effect on the results but I don’t know. I am a little iffy on this article because I am unsure of it relevance or choice of variables. I don’t know if this article had strong results because they were conflicting. I think the TAAS variable should not have even been used because the teachers teach the test; this is true of several state exams. I agree with the authors that there is no correlationship between diversity/representation and organization performance because there are too many other variables that effect performance.

Overall, I believe that these articles are representative of early research into organizational diversity and performance. I believe that a diverse organization can be a good thing if it is not forced upon the organization. My experience in Roanoke showed me that the City of Roanoke is a diverse organization that is somewhat if not truly representative of the people it represents. I believe that it is facts speak for themselves, in the City Managers Office women out number men and there is minority representation. There are several department heads that who are minority and are women. I would be interested in studying the diversity of city governments and how accurately they represent the people in their areas. As we move forward I believe that we will see more diverse and repetitive organizations because that is the direction that we’ve been moving in over the last twenty or so years. The readings were a good start but I believe that if there is a “problem” with a lack of diversity it will correct itself. Organizations are a lot more complicated than some of these studies suggest. This leads me to think that coming up with a way to study them is complicated.

A few months ago, we heard from a frustrated reader. Noting the abundant info about emerald ash borer (EAB) in urban environments, he could find almost nothing on managing ash in woodland stands. Philip Potyondy created this video to begin to answer that question.

The video has four sections:

First Extension’s Jeff Hahn reviews basic EAB biology, dispersal, and impacts on host trees.

Second, Keith Jacobson of the MN DNR’s Utilization & Marketing unit briefly reviews markets for ash wood in Minnesota.

Third, we head to the woods for brief comments from Paul Dickson, president of the Minnesota Association of Consulting Foresters.

Talk about sanctimony. See e.g. the N.Y. Times “Lens” blog segment called “Behin

Talk about sanctimony. See e.g. the N.Y. Times “Lens” blog segment called “Behind the Scenes: To Publish or Not” by David Dunlop about the decision of the Associated Press to publish the photograph of a mortally wounded marine over the objections of his immediate family members.

The photograph was part of a series by Julie Jacobson, a photographer embedded with a Marine unit in Afghanistan. The series shows the soldier on patrol in the streets of an Afghani village, and then the solider on the ground minutes later, tended by a fellow marine, after his leg has been taken by a rocket-propelled grenade. The series includes photos of fellow marines mourning the soldier, before his gear, at a memorial service.

The soldier’s father, when shown the photograph of his mortally wounded son, asked that it not be published, telling A.P. that by distributing the photo, it would be dishonoring the memory of his son. Defense Secretary Robert Gates wrote to A.P. on the family’s behalf, saying, “why your organization would purposefully defy the family’s wishes knowing full well that it will lead to yet more anguish is beyond me. Your lack of compassion and common sense in choosing to put this image of their maimed and stricken child on the front page of multiple American newspapers is appalling.”

But, after what Santiago Lyon, head of the phography division at A.P. called “a healthy discussion…the decision we came to was that — as a journalistic imperative — the need to tell this story overrode some of the other considerations.”

Why am I not surprised?

A.P. and the photographer Jacobson acknowledge that the shock value of the photo was a strong factor in their decision to publish. (Duh.) As Jacobson said, “it is necessary to be bothered from time to time.” [Italics added.]

Okay, I understand A.P.’s position (which I’m going to accept is a good faith position and not simply as a cover for the photographer’s wish for fame and kudos, and A.P.’s wish to sell newspapers.) I was very against the Bush administration’s refusal to allow flag-draped caskets to be filmed; I felt it was a way to lessen the impact of the war at home, and that it, in fact, dishonored the sacrifice of the lost soldiers.

I’m also sure that Jacobson, embedded with the troops, grew to truly care about them and their sacrifice, and that she feels very strongly about the value of her work in bringing much needed attention to them.

So I understand (and I’m willing to believe) that A.P. and Jacobson really do want to show how awful war is, and to emphasize the burdens and terror suffered by the troops.

What I don’t get is how A.P. decided that the collective “bothering” of casual readers (who can, if they want to get a better view, click a button to expand the image to full screen proportions) outweighed the additional specific anguish that they were causing the soldier’s family, the people who were closest to that soldier’s face and figure, who have a claim in his remains. (The arrogance and sanctimony of that decision is so mind-blowing that it frankly tends to shake one’s willingness to believe that A.P. and Jacobson really are acting solely in good-faith, and are not swayed by unexamined narcissism.)

Yes, the photo makes the point about the omnipresence of terrible death in war. But, in the face of the family’s objections, wouldn’t the image of the living soldier, with the phrase, “he was mortally wounded ten minutes later” do the trick?

Lyon of A.P. babbled that the death “becomes very personal and very direct in some way, because we have a name, we have a home town, we have a shared nationality and we have, to a certain extent, a shared culture and some common values.” But couldn’t A.P. have illustrated the “shared culture” business by showing the soldier at, for example, his high school prom?

Jacobson, whom you sense is just desperate to defend her position (and is clearly devoted to a photo which she must view as one of the greatest of her career), notes that the other marines in the squad had no objection to the idea of publication. (I’m guessing the photo “bothered” them less since they were actually on the scene.) Yet I wonder in this specific case if the marines were informed of the objections of their compatriot’s family. Somehow I can’t quite hear them saying to Jacobson, “the family’s against it? So what?”

The final appalling piece to me of this story is the sanctimony of the New York Times. The Times, during the slow news days of Labor Day weekend, manages to re-publish the picture (again in clickable full screen proportions). In this case, the Times is not even reporting the poor soldier’s death or the terrible burdens faced by troops in foreign wars. No, with pompous self-regard, it is republishing the photo simply to discuss the burdens of those in the Press. (The burdens of dealing with family wishes, societal strictures as to appropriate conduct, good taste, compassion, common sense, honor.)

Shame on you, Times.

Importing Terrorists to the UP?
By Jim Jacobson*

We obviously need to create more jobs these days, especially in the UP. But is importing terrorists really the best way to do so? Unfortunately, Rep. Bart Stupak apparently believes so.

We’re all familiar with the debate over Guantanamo Bay. Maybe President George W. Bush shouldn’t have put the prison for terrorists there. But that debate is long over. That’s where the prison is.

Does it make sense to move it to the U.S., and especially to the UP?

Rep. Stupak says “yes.” He asked the Department of Homeland Security to “explore the option” of using Camp Manistique to hold terrorist detainees moved from Guantanamo Bay. “We’re willing to look at it,” Stupak explained.

I suppose it sounds like a good idea if you spend most of your time in Washington, D.C., like Rep. Stupak. But it doesn’t sound quite so good if you live in the UP.

One big problem is legal. Bring these prisoners into the U.S. and they suddenly get to claim the constitutional due process rights to which the rest of us are entitled. That might force us to release them.

After all, U.S. soldiers and Marines usually are too busy fighting on the battlefield to read a prisoner his Miranda rights and collect evidence like a television CSI unit. The fact that we know someone is dangerous doesn’t mean we necessarily can prove it in court.

In that case not only would we have to release a terrorist, but we’d have to release him in America — in the UP.

These aren’t the sort of people we want in our midst. Rep. Pete Hoekstra may have overstated things a little, but not too much, when he described the Gitmo prisoners as “240 of the most evil people in the world.” They aren’t the sort of folks we normally would invite to the UP.

There’s a big difference between most of the Guantanamo Bay detainees and the usual state or federal prisoner. The latter generally are out for themselves and are not determined to hurt as many of the rest of us as possible. But the chief objective of terrorists is to kill or injure innocent people.

Granted, the federal government would—hopefully—build a safe and secure prison facility. But most domestic criminals are not part of transnational networks interested in securing their release and attacking those around them.

Whatever the downsides of a prison at Guantanamo Bay, the chances of an attempted prison break or terrorist assault are nil. Not so in the U.S.

Indeed, the UP’s very openness would leave all of us vulnerable to any foreign malcontent who sought to demonstrate solidarity with his imprisoned colleagues. That a terrorist attack might not make sense to us doesn’t mean that it wouldn’t be possible.

Obviously, nothing bad might end up happening. But does it make sense to create the possibility when none presently exists?

The fact that a few terrorists already are housed in federal prisons doesn’t mean it is a good idea to multiply the number several-fold.

In fact, bringing more terrorists or terrorist sympathizers into the U.S. prison system risks infecting other convicts with the virus of radical Islam. We already are seeing the growth of radical Islam in American facilities.

Adding true believers to the mix likely would make the problem much worse. It won’t be easy to keep terrorist detainees segregated from the rest of the population, especially as legal appeals move forward and local pressure encourages the authorities to move prisoners around.

Obviously, residents of Michigan and the UP are hurting, with the state planning to close eight prisons, including Hiawatha Correctional Facility in Kincheloe. Jobs will be lost. More important, one has to ask whether letting prisoners out early is a good way to save money.

But bringing terrorists into the UP is not the solution.

By all means let’s work together to create more jobs. The federal government is making alternative energy a priority: why not target the UP? American companies are desperately attempting to cut production costs. As I can personally attest, the UP is a great place from which to operate.

The UP also would be a perfect location for “eco-tourism,” which would attract more outdoors enthusiasts. Other people probably have even better ideas.

Many people across the nation, including in the UP, are suffering from hard times. We all need to cooperate in coming up with creative answers at this difficult time. Creative, not desperate ideas, like moving the Guantanamo detainees to the UP.

We need jobs, not terrorists.

CORO Italia came into being at the end of 2002 with the aim of making a place for itself in the still little-developed modern furniture, especially modern outdoor furniture design market. The first collection, designed by Stefano Gallizioli, is a complete concept, ranging from chairs and tables to BBQ Grills, aimed at a demanding and refined clientele. The materials used are the result of systematic research of prime elements having those characteristics of quality and solidity capable of guaranteeing the durability of each item in the CORO collection.

The impact of CORO’s presentation to the press was immediately positive, the quality of the imaging and the expression of the company philosophy receiving universal applause.

Over the past three years the collections have been expanded and enriched with new products proposed by young designers and by others of more established fame like James Irvine. Currently, we are present in 80 showrooms in Italy and 260 around the world and among them we can count some of the foremost opinion leaders of the market. CORO sales points are selected, differentiated and all respond to that professionalism which is fundamental in creating a relationship of trust between customer and retailer. Commercial competition is hinged upon ‘made in Italy’ values which are based on advanced technologies and the careful selection of raw materials.

Today CORO lives indoors as well. Although it originates as an outdoor collection, CORO has developed a vast and varied range which has immediately been perceived by the public for use in every living area of the house. CORO can cater for the practical and organisational necessities of the furnishing market and custom-made sector with contract solutions and tailor-made proposals. CORO has all the necessary qualities: resources, energy and market awareness. A small company, with professional management and staff, structured to answer to the needs of their customers’ new life styles. This is CORO’s objective.

I just got back from my most recent checkup and I lost a whole 2.2 kilograms in the last two weeks.

I just got back from my most recent checkup and I lost a whole 2.2 kilograms in the last two weeks. That is almost 5 pounds for those who are too lazy to convert it themselves. That is not bad at all considering I didn’t try at all. As a matter of fact, I ate a helluva lot more than I usually do at home (including my over-indulgence in chocolate milkshakes) cuz there are about 100 ice cream places around here and I am not a big ice cream fan (but I do love a good milkshake).

Oops, didn’t get this post out yesterday. I ended up going to bed at 6pm after my therapy program was over for the day. Relaxation can be very exhausting sometimes.

Yesterday I had the stuffed zucchini and rice. It was by far the best meal I have had in the cafeteria since I’ve been here. Yummy! It is hard to be a non-meat-eater in this country. Pretty much all they eat here is meat and beer is the standard drink, which makes it very difficult for me to find things that I enjoy. The beer is not bad, especially if you like beer in general. It has at least 2x the alcohol content of American beer and has, by law, to be made without preservatives and other chemical additives (Das Deutsche Reinheitsgesetz or “The German Purity Law“). A beer is cheaper than the same amount of coke or juice at most any restaurant (including McDonalds), but I am just not a beer drinker. If I am going to drink (which is seldom) then I want it to be tasty and get me there quickly, which is why I like vodka.

This morning I had my last massage here in Bad Kreuznach as my therapy plan only goes until Thursday. On Friday morning I am scheduled to return back home. That is ok, I will make sure the doc here recommends further massage therapy back in Erlangen. Of all the different therapy programs I have here, I think that the massages, water gymnastics and the Stress Management program Progressive Muscle Relaxation by E. Jacobson (PMR) have been the most helpful to me. I’m sure if I would have had the PMR 20 years ago I would be a completely different person today. Stress is one thing I have definitely had an abundance of over those last 20 years here in Germany. Now I just have to take the time out at home to continue these and I am confident I will lead a much more productive (and hopefully less painful) life.
