First of all thanks to Ryan for getting me the 320 Kbps from the edit, you rock! Madonna did a great job with Mirwais in 2000’s ‘Music’, then in 2003 she repeats him as producer for ‘American Life’, maybe one of the best albums from her, but was almost ignored and is so far her worst selling studio album. Second single “Hollywood” did terrible in US charts, (since “American Life” american radio stations seem to hate her), the single didn’t even charted in Billboard’s hot 100, however it did quite well in Dance charts, Paul Oakenfold, Victor Calderone, The Micronauts, Deepsky and Stuart Price remixed the single for a perfect Club song.

However, “Hollywood” is quite famous for the VMA’s presentation, where she kissed Britney and Christina. This wedding style performance took the Jacques Lu Cont’s Thin White Duke version from the song, mixed with “Like a Virgin” and a rap from Missy Elliot, this medley was included in her EP ‘Remixed and Revisited’. Then she used the remix again in her Re-Invention Tour, with a dub sound and a heavier instrumentation with guitars, arabian sounds and tapping, this one was featured in her Live CD ‘I’m Going to Tell You a Secret’. So by far is one of Madonna’s most famous and most used mixes, the original one is filled of synthesizers and an alarm sound that gives more personallity to the song. Hope all of you like these one, its one of Stuart’s best remixes.

“It’s My Life” is a song by the British synthpop band Talk Talk. In 2003, No Doubt recorded a cover version of the song to promote their greatest hits album The Singles 1992–2003. Because the band was on hiatus, while lead singer Gwen Stefani recorded her solo debut album Love. Angel. Music. Baby., they decided to record a cover to avoid having to write a new song. The band listened to hundreds of songs and narrowed it down to “It’s My Life” and INXS‘ 1982 song “Don’t Change“.

No Doubt had doubts on recording a cover and contemplated writing new material. However, they decided on “It’s My Life” after rehearsing it with producer Nellee Hooper, referring to it as a “feel good” song. The track was nominated for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal at the 47th Grammy Awards.

Chart Performance

The cover was successful in the United States, reaching number ten on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and remaining on the chart for twenty-eight weeks. It was moderately successful on adult contemporary stations, reaching number twenty on the Adult Contemporary chart, but had high longevity and appeared atop the Adult Top 40’s recurrent chart. The single was more successful in clubs, peaking at number sixteen on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart, and had some play on modern rock stations, reaching number thirty-two on the Modern Rock Tracks. The Recording Industry Association of America certified the digital download gold for selling half a million copies.

On the UK Singles Chart, “It’s My Life” debuted at number twenty but was unable to reach a higher position until it was released with a remix of the No Doubt song Bathwater which boasted the single up to number 17. The single dropped off the chart after seven weeks. It was more of a success across Europe, reaching the top ten in Italy, Finland, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden and the top twenty in Austria, Belgium, France, and Switzerland. The single reached number seven on the ARIA Singles Chart, lasting seventeen weeks on the chart, and was listed at number eighty-one on the 2004 end-of-year chart. The Australian Recording Industry Association certified the single platinum in 2004 for shipping 70,000 copies.

Music Video

The 1930s-style music video was directed by David LaChapelle. In the song’s music video, Stefani portrays a black widow whose look closely resembles that of actress Jean Harlow, who is put on trial and sentenced to die for the murders of three men she knew, portrayed by the other members of the band. In between the death scenes are scenes of Stefani in court and being dragged to the gas chamber where she is executed. The video ends with the three murder victims in the afterlife, laughing and watching her televised execution.

The music video was moderately successful on video chart programs. On MTV’s Total Request Live, it reached number seven in November 2003 and was on the countdown as late as January 2004. The video peaked at number eight on MuchMusic’s Countdown and remained on the program through March 2004. At the 2004 MTV Video Music Awards, “It’s My Life” won the awards for Best Group Video and Best Pop Video. It also received nominations for Best Direction, Best Cinematography, and Best Art Direction^.

The Remixes

Stuart Price, producer and remixer of artists like Madonna, Missy Elliott, The Killers, Gwen Stefani, Seal, and Keane, created the Thin White Duke mix of “It’s My Life”, which won the award for Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical. This version was featured on the video game Karaoke Revolution Volume 2. On December 9, 2008 it was also made available as downloadable content for the Rock Band series.

The Chocolate O’Brian Remix was produced by Stephen Bradley and Dave Tweedie. Bradley plays the trumpet, keyboard, and is a backup singer for No Doubt. In addition to his work with No Doubt, he collaborated with Green Day, Gwen Stefani, Sugar Ray as well as performing with Outkast, Black Eyed Peas, The Specials, Sly and Robbie, Sting, Bounty Killer, Eve, Phantom Planet, and Josh Groban. In 2002 Tweedie and Bradley formed Chocolate O’Brian Productions.

I don’t have producer information on The Great People Club Remix. If anybody does, please let me know and I will add it. As far as I know, this version is commercially unavailable on compact disc.

There has been nothing new from Stuart since the Pandemonium Versions… so I guess sharing an oldie is a good choice for this weekend. Don’t know if you guys know Mekon? Stuart had worked with this UK guy several time, since 1997 when he still was remixing for Wall of Sound artists. Several time Stuart gave his Les Rythmes Digitales treatment for him. Mekon, who is also known as Agent Provocateur or by  real name John Gosling, is not quite famous in the music world, his genre is called “Big Beat” which is similar to what Chemical Brothers and The Crystal Method plays.

Mekon’s 2000 album “Relax With Mekon” featured several musicians, almost everyone related to Wall of Sound. Price made his appearance as ‘Jacques Lu Cont’ featured on a song named “Eurostar”. The song is fast and with lots of synthesizers, an instrumental piece which is worth hearing with Stuart’s quality which we are used to hear, the song has an epic intro and lots of percussions, great track. Yesterday was so great. I went to a Dance-Expo here in Mexico City, the interesting thing is the mixture of cultures and dances together in an only place, the thing is that most of them were fusions from Arab and other styles. The thing that impressed me the  more was a mixture of Tribal with Arab, a girl that moved as if she was excorcised or something like that, it was so cool. There were lots of styles and mixtures, I felt like in heaven of dancers… well actually I’m quite a fan of dance. And yes it inspired me to share you this song, which is actually a mixture.

“…And Dance” was released to promote a compilation entitled ‘Two Culture Clash’  which features mixtures of Electronic and other genres more folkloric, what a great album let me say. Price appeared as Jacques Lu Cont featured in 2 tracks from the album, the one I’m posting and “Na Na Na Na”. This song is a mixture of sounds from the electronic style from Stuart with the Jamaican reggae from General Degree, interesting fusion which is quite worth. Hope you like this one guys, is a good one.

“We’ll take a holiday. I know you’d love me better” You know this words from Juliet’s song “Avalon”. Ok I have a new story for you  guys… the sad part is that I don’t remember too much of it, but still enought to compensate this song. Before I forget, first of all I must apologize for not posting in a long time, I took some time for distraction, I’m  terribly sorry guys. First of all since some weeks before I’ve been kind of stressed and with problems of Insomnia, so people recommended me to gave a time for myself. So I became a complete disaster, basically I was living more time on the streets and places than in my house.

Between the things that had happened during the past days is that me and a pretender we have been kind of tense because of a problem we had with a confusion of me and him… Things were kind of stressing and I decided to go out with some friends of mine to a Pool Party in Cuernavaca (a town that is about 2 hours from Mexico City) It was supposed that he was going to come with me, but after all he didn’t get the permission, so I had all the rights to be a bad boy. And I had a really great time (well at least that what people tell me) I was so drunk that still I don’t remember anything. The thing is that according to a guy that was with me all the party, I had an intense talk with the DJ about music, he told me that I made my tantrum until he put me “Miles Away” so in that time I began to tell everyone about my ex and the story we have with that song… Yes I woke up next day in the car with other clothes and with a strange feeling of guilt and some pains in my body. When I was returning in the car a friend of mine took one of my cds and there was “Avalon” the remix and I told him that the song is perfect to describe the holiday I took from this pretender and in this way he’ll love me better.

Ok maybe this is not a healthy way to distract me, however I feel like I discharged all the things I had inside (inconciently). Now going to the point. You all know about Juliet, there are like 2 posts about her already, Avalon made 1st place in Dance Charts thanks to the remix Stuart made as ‘Jacques Lu Cont’. You can even find in some digital stores the remix referenced as if it was the original. The Versus Mix gives the song the perfect rythm and perfects it even more than the original that Stuart written and produced, is more quick and it’s one of those beats you can’t take of your mind. Here are the two versions for you guys, the original Versus Mix and the Radio Mix, I prefer the edit because the ending retakes the part where she says “We stand up” and gives a better ending in my opinion. Well check this song guys, is one of Stuart’s best mixes.

Sneaky Sound System announced a US Tour recently (abbey pub 6/24) and along with the news came this remix. Just the other day I was describing Stuart Price and his many aliases to a friend, how he effortlessly bridges gaps between pop culture and the underground, each time reemerging as one of the most impressive talents in the industry. This song is no exception to his catalog of epic big room hits.

Right now Madonna is working in 2 new tracks for her new ‘Greatest Hits’ Compilation, Oakenfold and Frank E will be the new producers for the Queen of Pop (you can hear the demos for “Revolver” in youtube). Madge doesn’t seem to give up with her new Urban-style, however she is becoming more  to the house movement. Let’s hope that the new tracks sound more like Madonna, not as ‘Hard Candy’ which sounds like any other Urban musician.

Hard Candy’s first single “4 Minutes” got the media attention for featuring Timbaland and Justin Timberlake on it, which for me is a bit dissapointing because it sounds as if Madonna was the featured artist on it. The song was remixed by Junkie XL, Peter Rauhofer, Bob Sinclar and many others. The ‘Jacques Lu Cont’s Thin White Duke’ remix, featuring the clock and ‘tick-tock’ sound all over it, mixed with an elegant electro-pop sound, also it makes you feel that Madonna isn’t the featured one on the song. The remix is totally different from the original one, but with the same length. By the way I don’t know if it’s fanmade, but it seems not, they have taken out this remix many times, which occurs when they are official.

Madonna – 4 Minutes (Jacques Lu Cont Remix)

Stuart did quite well in 2005. His poduction skills let him produce artists such as Madonna, New Order and Juliet; “Jacques Your Body (Make Me Sweat) got to the top 10 in the UK charts; he won a grammy in that year for his remix of “It’s My Life”, and was nominated for producing “Guilt Is a Useless Emotion” and for his “Mr. Brightside” remix the next year. Juliet’s ‘Random Order’ shows a more rock side of Stuart’s production, but with the dance beats and electronic production that makes him one of the tops in the music industry.

Second single for Juliet’s album was “Ride the Pain”, is kind of electro-rock with lots of synthesizers and dirty lyrics. As the previous single she got a honorable #1 on the Dance Charts. ‘Jacques Lu Cont’ made a great job, the remix is based on a drums solo, synthesizers and the vocals of the original song, is kind of aggressive and quite different from the traditional remixers we hear. Certainly I don’t know anything about Leroy Hanghofer, just that Stuart made a remix for ‘Pin’. The remix is nothing special I must say, it features some vocas tha say something strange and the music isn’t something special. By the way I forgot to mention that they are about to release two new studio albums ‘Junior’ and ‘Senior’ and th first single was already released “Happy Up Here”. It includes remixes by Boys Noize, Breatbok and Datassette. Let’s hope that Stuart works back with both of them in some point of their careers.

From the same single from the past post “What Else Is There?” dispreads another remix from Stuart. This time is the ‘Jacques Lu Cont’ Radio Mix which is a more suitable and dance song prepared for the radio stations. The lyrics are almost the same, however the music is more moved and with electric feelings all over it. Enjoy it guys.

Missy is one of the most important musicians in the hip-hop scene, she has an incredible solo carrer and had worked with the top of pop music with celebrities as Madonna, Ciara, Nelly Furtado, Christina Aguilera, The Pussycat Dolls and many others. From her sixth album ‘The Cookbook’ spreads the first single “Lose Control” which sampled the song “Music Makes You Lose Control” from Stuart’s project ‘Les Rythmes Digitales’.

Stuart chose the ‘Jacques Lu Cont’ alias for this song. which instead of saturating the song with his own sample, robotizes Missy’s voice creating a new chorus for this song. The sound is much more dance and sounds better than the original one, the music reminds me of egypcian music at certain point. I included the 3 versions, enjoy them.

This Australian music project mixed electronic and alternative rhtyms in their songs, which made an interesting mixing. Till 2006 they have released 4 studio albums and charted some songs in the Australian charts with their strange music fusions. Their most succesful singles “Dust Me Selecta” charted a 24 and had several remixers on the single.

The ‘Jacques Lu Cont Club Mix’ is a peculiar remix that appeared at the begining of the new century and includes a strange sound that remind me to the birds when they cry for food, and with synthesizers all around the song. It is one of those old mixes that seemed to have dissapeared long ago, but is quite good. I included 2 versions: the original and the edit. Enjoy them and have a nice week.

This is the second post from this guys. I think you know about them, since they have been an important part of the alternative and electonic music since their beggings in the 80s. With their complete discography they have sold around 75 million albums, with many impotant songs that trascended in history like “Enjoy the Silence”, “Personal Jesus”, “People Are People” and many others.

The secong single from ‘Playing the Angel’ was “A Pain That I’m Used To” which was remixed by Stuart as the ‘Jacques Lu Cont Mix’ which had a less aggressive sound, becoming a dance song. Also there are certain alterations in the order of the lyrics. and the Dub repeats constantly ‘Something that rings true’ is quite interesting. 4 versions inncluded for all of you: the original mix, the dub, the edit and the re-construction by Markus Schulz. Before I forge thanks to Ryan for the edit and the re-construction can be founded on the compilation ‘Here’.

Goldfrapp has been a very important part of the evolution of the electronic and dance music. Since their debut ‘Felt Mountain’ the duo have been respected in this genre. Their second album ‘Black Cherry’ had more success than their previous one, it includes ‘Strict Machine’ which toped the ‘Hot Dance Club Play’.

“Twist” was the third single taken from the album, which included a good instrumentation and perverse lyrics. ‘Jacques Lu Cont’s Conversion Perversion Mix’ (as named in the single) is a remix that makes the song even be more sexual. It has an intro that sound like a deep breathing and with a similar instrumentation, making it a perfect remix. Enjoy it!

Texas is a band from Scotland (Glaslow) that began in the second half of the 80’s. In 2005 appeared the last album from Texas “Red Book” from here spreads the song “What About US”, a great pop-ballad with acoustic melody and quite calm…

In 2006 Stuart remixed the song as Jacques Lu Cont giving it a totally different sound, more aggressive and moved. It has drums elements all over the song and also some funny sound that I can’t explain what it is, but it’s definitively a great remix and quite different to the original version. Kasabian is an English indie-rock band, that had released till now two albums: “Kasabian” and “Empire”. Their major hit outside the UK has been “Club Foot”, which is worth to hear it if you like this kind of indie movement that is taking ultimately the world of music. Other songs i recommend are “L.S.F. (Lost Souls Forever)” and “Shoot the Runner”

“Me Plus One” is the third single from Empire, and it has the Jacques Lu Cont treatment, giving it a darkest sound the song. If you have the chance to hear the original version, i recommend you do it and compare with this remix from Stuart. It comes in 3 versions: the original mix, the dub version and the radio edit. Hope you like them =)

Ok, so if you follow my blog you might have picked up that about a month ago my laptop crashed and with it I lost all of my music and all of the music I had been making. Shit. I know. But instead of letting it get me down I’ve been trying to take it in stride.

There are just a few good things that have come out of this whole thing.

1. I’ve streamlined my DAW’s and made my whole music workflow a lot lot lot lot lot smoother.

2. I’ve narrowed my plugins down to the essentials.

3. I’ve had a chance to re-visit every piece of music I own as I re-copy it to my hard drive (or should I say external hard drive…. fucking lesson learned)

And I guess the question after that would be why the hell is that a good thing.

Well, I’ve just gotten so bogged down with the shear amount of music that I own that it becomes really difficult do dig through any of it. I just find myself cycling through only my new cds and so many of them just fall to the wayside.

So here are some of my favorite unearthed gems from digging through my CD collection. Just a bunch of albums that I forgot how much I love.

1. Timo Maas – Maasterpieces [Mixmag Covermount 2005]

It’s hard for me to explain how much I love this CD. It’s just kick ass. It might have to do with  the bumg of Dinky’s Acid In My Fridge or maybe the over the top bass of H-Man’s Manga (which I finally heard someone play out recently and it was just as crazy loud as I imagined it would be), but mostly I think it’s the slow burner of Paradise Soul’s remix of Numb which is one of the most under rated tracks I’ve ever heard. Thick and sexy. Timo’s mixing is very sleek and forgetable but his track selection reminds me of why I plop my money down for Mixmag each month.

2. Jacques Lu Cont – LRD (Revolution Magazine Covermount 2000)

Short and sweet. Here I am naive little 14 year old looking through a supermarket for something to do while my mom shops and I stumble onto this short lived gem of a magazine. It tried very hard to be what URB is today but it was just a touch ahead of it’s time. Oh well, they had free cds and this one is the best of them. 6 tracks mixed by super producer Stuart Price in a very awesome french disco vein. Might be the reason I fell in love with dance music.

3. Christopher O’Riley – True Love Waits – Christopher O’Riley Plays Radiohead (Sony 2003)

I’m a sucker for music like this. Classical but instantly familiar. This might be my favorite cd I own to just relax to. I remember hearing this for the first time before the midnight release of Hail To The Thief and thinking it might be one of the best things I’ve ever heard. Slowly it’s fallen away from me but now that I’ve got it back I’ll be listening to this one for quite some time to come.

4. The Beta Band – Heroes To Zeros (Astralwerks 2004)

I think a lot of people still remember that scene from High Fidelity where John Cusack is all like “I will now sell 3 copies of the Beta Band’s 3 Eps,” Great scene, great band. By the time this CD came out though I think a lot of people had moved on for some reason. It’s a shame because some of their best work is on there. One of my first experiments with production was making a bootleg of Liquid Bird that really didn’t work very well. Either way I sorta forgot about this album until the incredible Pure For came on random.

Ok, so The Killers are bit of a guilty pleasure for me.  I didn’t really enjoy their first go around but I did like their second effort, Sam’s Town, particularly that single “Bones”.  Well they are coming out with their third record in late November and it’s produced by none other my boy STUART PRICE, master of the dancefloor – Confessions on the Danceflooor that is.. Stuart Price aka Jacques Lu Cont aka The Thin White Duke (also Bowie’s moniker) is responsible for a shitload of awesome remixes and productions, including Madonna’s hit album Confessions on the Dancefloor that brought her back from the brink that was American Life or whatever that shitty album was.  He also does work under Les Rhythmes Digitales – whom I’m sure you all know.  So here is this first lead single off the Killer’s new album…
