We stayed in Kihei at the Maui Banyan in unit H-105. It was an amazing place to stay and we cant wait to go back. The buildings are back far enough from South Kihei Road that you do not hear the traffic. We found Kihei to be a great location. There are good beaches right across the street if you don’t want to drive. But it is close enough to the wonderful beaches of Wailea, without the excessive prices. And it is about a fifteen or twenty minute drive to Kahului, and about a 40 minute drive to Lahaina.

The condo itself truly was a home away from home. The king sized bed was very comfy. There is an A/C unit in both the living room and the bedroom, which was very nice since we were not used to the Hawaiian heat. The kitchen had everything we needed. Most days we only ate breakfast at the condo, and then set out to explore or relax on the beach. We often ate out for lunch and dinner. Although there were a few nights we enjoyed using the bbq area to do our own cooking for dinner. We found it to be much better than a hotel type setup. We stocked up on all sorts of groceries at the Costco in Kahului, so it was definitely nice to have a full kitchen with a regular sized fridge/freezer.

Another nice feature of this unit are two bathrooms. The one that joins with the bedroom has a sink, toilet and of course the jacuzzi tub. The other has a sink, toilet and the washer/dryer. It was great that we didn’t have to find a laundromat and were able to wash our clothes and beach gear when we wanted to.

The Banyan itself has two great pool / bbq areas – one at either end of the grounds. The pool is open until 10 or 11, although they don’t seem to kick you out as long as you keep the noise down. We found that we wanted to swim after dinner some nights, but it gets dark at around 7pm there. So the pool was the best option and we certainly got a lot of use out of it.

When you check in at the front desk, they give you a parking pass for their parkade. And Kamaole II beach is a two – three minute walk from the unit…I wrote an additional post for the beach that has more information and photos.

Modern architectural design combined with contemporary and modern twist interiors makes The Waves Resort an enticing place to stay. The resort offers self-contained apartments, with gourmet kitchens and top of the class bathrooms.

Why I fell in love with Wave Resort is its accessibility to Broadbeach dining and shopping centres. It is situated right above central Broadbeach. The best part of it all was seeing the beautiful views of the Gold Coast coastline, Surfers Paradise skyline and Gold Coast Hinterland views.

The moment I step right in to the reception area, I was mesmerized by the interior design of the resort’s waiting area. It’s marvelous.

I am quite meticulous about cleanliness and sanitation. I give this resort a 10 out 10 rating for its clean apartment and modern kitchen to die for. The resort has top of the line facilities that cater to the needs of every guest.

I really do like swimming and Wave Resort never failed to satisfy me with my desire to take a dip and just enjoy. The resort’s plunge pool is a winner! I even had the chance to try out their roof top jacuzzi, and I am glad that I did as the views from the roof top are spectacular.

The different array of Broadbeach cafes and restaurants found within walking distance from the resort are a sure hit to every one who wants to dine in and have a taste for fancy meals or maybe just a cup of coffee.

Truly, Wave Resort is indeed the perfect accommodation located in Broadbeach on the Gold Coast.

The lovely DC Princess does a weekly blog called I LOVE Fridays.  I was inspired by reading her posts each week to write one similar last week called *LOVE*.

I so enjoyed doing the *LOVE* post that I think I might make it a regular event.  Not sure yet but we shall see.  It won’t be on a specific day because, well I have too many days devoted.  And I just can’t commit to that kind of pressure.  HAHA

I won’t however be restricting myself to only “Things” today like I did last time.  Just whatever comes to mind.  Yay!  (say Yay, you know you want to)

I *LOVE* that we got all of the shopping done for Thanksgiving today!  No more crazy crowds.  Yay!

I *LOVE* that someone rushed out of Wal-Mart with such hunger to getiton that they just whipped ripped their “Ecstasy” Trojans out of the box and left the box in the parking lot.  Yay!

I *LOVE* that I stopped to take a picture of the empty Trojan Box thinking ahead that I just had to share my jealousy excitement with all you poor, unsuspecting readers.  *grin* Yay!

I *LOVE* Entourage!! I just started watching it and have made it through to the middle of season 4.  I can’t believe I ever missed this show!!  It is sooooo good!  Yay!!

I *LOVE* that the weather is finally getting cooler.  Wearing long pants is much more socially acceptable when you go 4 weeks without shaving. Haha  Yay!!

I *LOVE* that December is so close now I can taste it!  Because it means TWO things that I *LOVE* are coming.  #1 The holidays!  (and my house gets uber awesome decos for the holidays) And #2 our next round of injections!!  Yay!

I *LOVE* these Suds.  If anyone knows how I can get in touch with them so that they can come to my shower and entertain cheer me on I would surely appreciate it!  Yay!

Sudah sekian lama penulis menanti-nantikan kesempatan ekspedisi di bumi Kalimantan/ Borneo. Bulan Agustus yang lalu akhirnya tercapai juga.

Hari mulai menjelang malam ketika pesawat mendarat di bandara Supadio, Pontianak. Suasana Pontianak di malam hari memang terlihat cukup dinamis, di sepanjang jalan protokol banyak berkumpul encek-encek (bapak-bapak) yang duduk kongkow-kongkow sambil minum kopi. Penulis pun mencoba menelusuri beberapa ruas jalan utama seperti Jalan Gajah Mada, Tanjung Pura, dan Diponegoro. Populasi masyarakat Tionghoa di kota ini bisa dibilang lumayan banyak, dengan dialek Teowchew agak dominan. Buah langsat yang manis dan murah meriah juga membanjiri kota Pontianak saat itu, hanya Rp.10 ribu untuk 3 atau 4 kilo.

Keesokan malamnya, dengan Bus Tebekang Express, penulis pun berangkat menuju ke Kuching, Sarawak – Malaysia. Perjalanan memakan waktu sekitar 7 jam hingga di Entikong (pos perbatasan Indonesia – Malaysia). Karena pos imigrasi perbatasan baru buka jam 5 subuh, kami pun para penumpang terpaksa harus menunggu. Kabar baiknya, tidak ada fiskal maupun biaya sepeser pun yang mesti kita bayar untuk melewati imigrasi perbatasan ini, kecuali ongkos bus tentunya. Kabar buruknya, jalan sepanjang Pontianak – Kuching ini rusak parah di beberapa bagian; di beberapa ruas jalanan ada yang masih belum beraspal.

Hari telah subuh ketika kami melewati pos perbatasan Tebedu (milik Malaysia). Embun dan kabut agak menghalangi pandangan, dan beberapa tonjolan pegunungan tampak di agak kejauhan, menjadi “tiang pancang alami” yang menyekat wilayah Kalimantan (Indonesia) dengan Sarawak (Malaysia). Secara umum, kondisi alam/ vegetasi di Sarawak tidaklah jauh beda dengan di Indonesia. Hanya aspek-aspek sosio-kultural yang agak beda: seperti sistem penomoran plat kendaraan yang tentunya sudah berbeda, juga pemakaian bahasa seperti “tandas awam” (bahasa Melayu dari “toilet”).

Dari pagi hingga siang, kami menelusuri pusat kota Kuching. Kota Kuching bisa dibilang sudah cukup maju, mungkin sedikit di atas Pontianak, dan juga lebih teratur. Angkot (yang di sana disebut “kereta sewa”) rata-rata hanya bertarif 1-2 ringgit untuk tujuan dalam kota. Siang hingga petang hari, penulis menyempatkan diri berkunjung ke salah satu objek pantai (sekitar 1,5 jam dari Kuching) yaitu “Damai Beach”.

Damai Beach sebenarnya memiliki corak pantai yang lazim (biasa) saja, akan tetapi suasana yang lebih lengang membuatnya menjadi tempat pelarian yang ideal dari hiruk pikuk. Beberapa turis bule tampak berbaring santai menjemur diri di atas pasir. Penulis yang sudah hampir sehari-semalam belum mandi, akhirnya nekat mencemplung ke Laut China Selatan untuk berenang. Ukh, ternyata memang benar air laut rasanya asin ya, he..he.. dan sialnya karena berenang di tempat yang terlalu dangkal, akhirnya kaki tergores berdarah oleh batu karang. Air laut yang asin membuat luka goresan bertambah perih.

Malam harinya, dari Kuching, penulis berangkat ke Miri (sudah dekat dengan perbatasan Brunei). Perjalanan panjang ini memakan waktu hingga 13 jam, tetapi patut diacungi jempol bahwa ruas jalan sepanjang Malaysia Timur ini kondisinya sangat baik. Mendekati Miri, di sisi jalan berderet kebun-kebun sawit yang dikelola oleh perkebunan Malaysia.

Sebenarnya di Miri ada objek yang sangat menarik yaitu Mulu Cave, yang konon termasuk salah satu gua alami terbesar di dunia. Sayangnya, untuk menuju lokasi mesti menggunakan pesawat kecil karena letaknya di gunung yang tidak bisa diakses dengan transportasi darat. Akhirnya penulis tidak jadi mengunjunginya. Sehingga sore harinya, penulis langsung beranjak menuju Brunei.

Meskipun memiliki tatanan kota yang apik dan rapi, tetapi suasana malam hari di Bandar Seri Begawan (BSB) amatlah renggang dan sepi. Dapat dimaklumi, mungkin salah satu sebabnya adalah populasi total 1 negara Brunei yang bahkan masih lebih sedikit dibandingkan populasi 1 kota Pontianak. Selain itu, berdasarkan rumor dari para imigran pekerja dari Malaysia, warga Brunei pada malam hari sudah malas keluar rumah, dan tidak ada “night life” di Brunei. Dengan GDP per kapita yang tinggi, memang terlihat bahwa warga Brunei tidak perlu bekerja keras pun telah ditunjang oleh negara, sehingga suasana kerja terlihat agak santai dan lengang. Pekerjaan-pekerjaan kasar seperti kuli/ buruh biasa diisi oleh imigran dari Malaysia/ Indonesia/ Filipina karena pekerjaan seperti ini ogah disentuh oleh orang Brunei.

Hotel Brunei yang penulis inapi juga mahalnya minta ampun. 1 kamar semalam bisa hampir Rp.900 ribu, padahal pelayanannya dan juga fasilitasnya minim sekali (masih jauh lebih baik pelayanan di Hotel Santika Pontianak, yang tarifnya hanya sepertiganya serta memiliki fasilitas sauna dan jacuzzi gratis).

Tidak lupa tentunya penulis berfoto-foto dengan landmark kota BSB, yaitu Masjid Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien yang tampak indah sekali di malam hari. Masjid ini dihiasi cahaya nuansa kuning, dengan dikelilingi kolam besar yang di tengahnya terapung sampan besar bertahtakan kubah bangunan khas Melayu.

Keesokan siangnya, penulis pun berangkat meninggalkan Brunei dan tiba di Miri malam hari. Malam itu juga dari Miri penulis langsung meluncur ke Kuching dan tiba di kota Serian (2 jam dari Kuching) pada pagi harinya. Setelah 1-2 jam berkeliling pasar di Serian, penulis pun berangkat balik ke Pontianak. Tiba di Pontianak petang hari, langsung meluncur ke Singkawang menggunakan taksi gelap dengan tarif 70 ribu/ orang.

Jarak Pontianak ke Singkawang sekitar 2-3 jam. Suasana malam hari di Kota Singkawang agak sepi, dengan pertokoan yang telah tutup, dan jalanan yang lengang hampir tanpa lalu lalang. Setelah menginap di sebuah hotel murah, pagi hari saatnya menjelajah kota Singkawang. Dengan menyewa becak dayung, penulis pun menelusuri kota ini. Nuansa Tionghoa di kota ini cukup kental, dengan lampion-lampion merah yang tergantung di ruas-ruas jalan. Dialek Tionghoa yang dominan di Singkawang adalah Hakka, agak berbeda dengan di Pontianak.

Kemudian, pertanyaan yang sering ditanyakan oleh teman-teman ke penulis adalah bagaimana perihal daya tarik kembang geulis di sana? Hmm, hal ini agak subjektif memang.. tapi jika dicermati mendalam, memang ada sedikit perbedaan “daya tarik” dari kedua kota ini.. masing-masing ada ciri khasnya yang agak unik dan susah dijelaskan.. sama juga dengan kota-kota laen yang pastinya masing-masing memiliki pesonanya yang khas.. jadi, datang dan rasakan sendiri aja   =)

So, I live in an apartment complex and I get to see all kinds of interesting things. Today, I saw 3 guys hanging out in the jacuzzi – just chillin’ I guess. I think that’s an odd place for 3 guys to agree on to hang out, especially in public. They were all college aged too. I thought maybe they were waiting on girls to come but none showed up. Strange.

Guy 3: K, look, bros. It’s nice out, we don’t have to work tomorrow, and, bros…no chicks. We need to go hot tubbin’!

Guy 1 & 2: BRO!!! That’s single handedly the most brilliant suggestion you’ve said all year! Let’s all get our trunks on, grab a few brewskies and skip down to the jacuzzi.

Guy 3: Bro!? Brewskies? There’s no ladies, we can bring our cosmos instead.

they're nice braids and all, but do I need to be excited about them?

hey everyone! i do apologize for my absence. i’ve been a journeying fool for the past two months, first spending almost a month at my girlhood home in Pennsylvania and then two weeks after that, a week in Florida. now that i’m staying put for a little while, here I am! and yes, the Internet does exist in PA, just not at my parent’s house. and yes, it does exist in FL, but i was busy getting up close and personal with a room-sized jacuzzi most days. I have been making sure to keep my other blog up-to-date, so you can always read that while you’re jonesin’ for the next set of amusing words/thoughts to emerge from me.

while I was away, there were many things that i saw, read, heard or that happened to me that made me say, “oh! this would be perfect for oreo girl!” did i write it down? nope. am i able to recall most of it? negative. so bit by bit, i’ll try to remember what it was that grabbed my attention–one thing, i will definitely discuss when i have more time (i’m about to get ready to go watch the Pittsburgh Steelers game–i don’t mess around with lateness when they’re involved) but for now–just a quick observation from Flo Rida.

i met a nice  family from Chicago while I was lounging in the jacuzzi. the husband seemed to really like my tankini top, the wife seemed overly excited to have befriended a black girl, the grandma was super interested in hearing of my expertise on the resort (because I had arrived two days before they did so I was the all-knower apparently), the grandpa loved my Southern accident–what Southern accent?? I’m a Yankee!–and their two little girls were in awe of me for some reason; maybe i reminded them of their mammie? anyhow, this family took a liking to me. the next night, same bat time, same bat channel, we met in the jacuzzi again. they had spent the day at Disney and were all eager to tell me about it. none so much as the mother, though.

“oh HI!!! i just have to show you the girls’ hair!!! hey girls, show the nice lady your hair!” i look at the two little blondes and other than wet-stuck-to-their-head hair, i see nothi–oh wait. yes. yessss. there appears to be some colored string of sorts in their heads. “don’t you see it!?” the mom asks me again. “they got braids in their hair at Disney today!! show her girls. show her your braids!! she’ll love them!!”

Reeeeeealy?? Now why would I love these colored string covered braids that look like friendship bracelets that i wore in the 7th grade? oh, i know–I’m black!  black girls just LOVE braids, don’t cha know?!   i knew that this woman was just trying to make conversation and was thrilled when she felt that there was some way she could relate to me. sadly, braids are not it. just looking at me she could see that i’m not rockin’ a traditional african-american hairstyle… she would have faired much better by bringing up the Bears or something.

but she tried. bless her, she tried. kudos for that. she was much better than the other white people (i think they were Germans) that immediately huddled their children together and exited the jacuzzi when I got in it. TWICE. what’s German for n*gger? cuz I think I heard it.

  Mi primer escepticismo cuando me hablaron del lugar se esfumó por completo cuando realicé la primera visita a los baños árabes de Barcelona. Y digo escepticismo porque me lo imaginaba un sitio muy “guiri”, aunque está claro no se puede criticar antes de saber.

 En pleno centro Barrio del Born, se ha restaurado fidedignamente un antiguo bañuelo. Allí se puede disfrutar de la costumbre del Baño Árabe, con un recorrido que te sumerge en el agua templada del tepidarium (36ºC), la caliente del caldarium (40ºC) y finalmente, la fría del frigidarium (16ºC). Además del jacuzzi, el baño de vapor turco, y la piscina de agua salada donde flotas como en el mar rojo

 El ambiente, la decoración, todo te invita a relajarte y a olvidarte del  mundo exterior, y la verdad es que en las dos horas que dura el baño, la bulliciosa Barcelona desaparece dentro de este mágico lugar. El sitio está iluminado con luz muy tenue y con velas, además, una agradable olor de fragancias naturales embriaga todo el establecimiento. La sensación es muy agradable, un pequeño gran goce para los cinco sentidos.

 Para los que esto les sepa a poco, los baños árabes de Barcelona también disponen de una plantilla de masajistas. Te puedes hacer un masaje de relajación, un craneal o hasta podal. Personalmente, no tengo muy buena experiencia con el servicio de masajes… la primera vez que fui me hice un masaje de relajación de 30min y me destrozaron, solo contaros que estuve 3 días sin casi poder moverme y el primer día me cogió fiebre y todo. Así que yo no os voy a recomendar el masaje (aunque seguramente tuve mala suerte con el masajista y el resto pueden no tener la culpa), pero sí que os recomiendo encarecidamente el circuito de aguas.

 Todo está estrechamente cuidado y pensado para que el cliente disfrute de esta tradición milenaria. El silencio, la ”poca” gente que dejan entrar a la vez en el lugar (lo cual es de agradecer) te ayuda a conseguir una relajación no solo física, sino también mental. Durante la estancia, también te puedes tomar un té caliente o agua fría en los acogedores rincones habilitados para eso.

En el vestuario te facilitan todo lo que se necesita: zapatillas, toallas, elementos de baño… Incluso se puede  adquirir un bañador si no dispones de uno.

 Así que… no lo dudes, date un regalo, un regalo para los cinco sentidos!

I am one happy crow. My mother is finally starting to understand me when I speak.  Today is a great example – she noticed my drinking cup was a little bit low, and she threw the old water out, washed the cup, and put in nice fresh water.  For all of her flaws, and there are SO many, she is very good about making sure the Bird has plenty of fresh food and drink.

However, it has been awhile since she has taken me out onto my balcony, where my jacuzzi-bowl  is in my large black, Nouvelle French dressing room. She says it has been too cold, I keep saying I am a Bird, and we live in the cold.  Her counter argument is that I am now, after 8 years, an indoor bird, and I would catch a cold.

Puh-leeze.  I am a crow, we are invincible.

So, when she brought my little cup of fresh water, I dunked my head in it, loud.  It startled her enough to realize that I was willing to take a bath in a cup, I do not like being dirty, and I was feeling icky.

She caved.  I was taken outside to my beautiful big bowl, where I proceeded to take the longest, splashiest bath ever, and she had to keep coming out and filling the jacuzzi-bowl.  I love it when she is my slave-girl. I should make her wear the Princess Leia slave outfit. The Bird thinks that would be appropriate. I will bring it up at our next Homeowners Meeting.

So, now I am glossy and clean and gorgeous, and below I would like to share with you a few photos of my room, my three story condo, and my books.

Nu när jag är “hem-hemma” tänkte jag att jag skulle utnyttja våran jucuzzi som bor här med dem i hemmet.

Och jag tror alltid att det ska bli så jävla skönt att sätta mig där i och bada, men så fort jag fyllt i allt vatten och satt mig i det kommer jag på att det inte alls är särskillt skönt. DET ÄR SÅ ÄCKLIGT VARMT ATT JAG TYP KOKAS och man blir bara trött och uttråkad (i och för sig behöver man kanske inte ha så varmt vatten, men har man i svalare känns det inte heller bra). Men nää, så sitter jag liksom där och tvingar mig kvar fast jag bara vill gå upp igen efter några minuter, men sen ändå tror jag nästa gång att det ska bli fint med ett bad.

Det har dessutom hänt två gånger då jag badat i den där jacuzzin att jag nästan har svimmat, båda gångerna fick jag lägga mig på golvet och ta igen mig lite. Hyperventilera. Jag gjorde också läten då jag låg där på golvet, åhhhhhhaaaaahhnääää. Ja typ så.

Denna gång lät jag dock inte så utan badade bara i kanske tio minuter – och så tappade jag ut allt vattnet. Slösigt.

Och tänk vad äckligt det är med bad egentligen. Det är ju för fan smutsigt vatten som åker runt, eller ja inte smutsigt smutsigt, men det är ju renare att duscha. Man duschar ju inte i samma vatten.
