ROLLING STONES frontman MICK JAGGER made a surprise appearance on stage with U2 on Friday (30Oct09)

ROLLING STONES frontman MICK JAGGER made a surprise appearance on stage with U2 on Friday (30Oct09) during the second night of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame concerts in New York City.

The first show on Thursday night (29Oct09) saw acts including Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, Jeff Beck, Sting and James Taylor take to the stage at Madison Square Garden.

Friday’s (30Oct09) show opened with Jerry Lee Lewis singing Great Balls of Fire, and went on to host a number of big name collaborations including Jeff Beck with Sting and U2 with the Black Eyed Peas.
The night built up to a climatic finale with Jagger, Fergie and Will.i.am all joining U2 to sing Rolling Stones hit Gimme Shelter, as Jagger entertained the crowd with his trademark dance moves.

Jagger stayed on stage to help U2 perform Stuck in a Moment You Can’t Get Out Of, before the Irish rockers closed the show with their hit Beautiful Day.

Earlier in the night, heavy metal rockers Metallica took the stage with Lou Reed for two songs, before Ozzy Osbourne joined them to belt out Iron Man and Paranoid.

Aretha Franklin also performed a number of her hits, teaming up with Annie Lennox to sing Chain of Fools.

NEW YORK — YouTube’s webcast of a U2 concert was watched by nearly 10 million people, the video site’s largest streaming event ever.

The Google-owned site said that the concert was watched around the world. It was shown live from the Rose Bowl in Pasadena on Sunday.

Chris Maxcy, head of music partnerships at YouTube, called the event “a big win” for the site.

Such harmless words. But oh so poignant.

Before I get to that, Thursdays dinner party. Justine (a dear colleague / friend from agency days of old), invites me over to her place.

In attendance; one of her colleagues, a journo who is bessy mates with the PR-PR guru in our Sydney office, and me. She lived with her cousin (who she mentioned was a photographer), in a stunning art-deco mansion block, overlooking Rushcutters Bay.

The view was stunning. The sort of second lounge area sits in huge windows, with big comfy lemsip sofas. My Sunday if I lived there? Coffee, oj, papers, croissant in that order!

After the youtube drama (some numpty released an ad pre-airing, unhappy client), we tuck in. Lovely food, stories, company. One of my best nights in Sydney.

Some story highlights:

- Justine came to stay with her cousin for a week. Still there 4 years on
- Her cousin owns several properties in Bali, and has furnished the apartment with nicks and nacks from his travel there. Totally eclectic, random, shouldn’t work, but does!
- He took her to a glam Sydney fashion show. After supping some champers, she offended an up+coming designer, when asking, ‘Sydneu’s lovely. But don’t you just think it’s no soul?’
- She gave cooking advice to a top Sydney Chef (Neil Perry), on how he could improve his Oysters. He took it more gracefully than the fashionista…

Needless to say, she’s beautiful, with a heart of gold. I kept spotting people I couldn’t quite place (Some Jaggers, a Beatle or two), but failed to make the connection. Anyway, she shows us one of his books, Siblings. All photographed together in their birthday suits. Big hoohaa at the time, a senior Aussie politician was involved, but had to pull out due to the ‘controversy’…

Anyway, cousin arrives back, lovely bloke. He asks if I’d like to see another of his books, so of course I say yes. He pops one in my lap, which has a very post-coital, slightly mashed looking Kylie grinning ear to ear, alongside the equally happy Mr. Michael Hutchence.

I flick through, and the whole thing is a celeb-spatter fest. Grace Jones, David Bowie, Nicole (pre and post tom (very hetro) cruise), you name em, he shot em.

He must have a real talent, they all look somewhat at ease. Something to do with the setting for the bulk of the shots no doubt; for a while, he was the club-appoonted photographer at the embassy club in London. He told a touching story about Paul and Linda, which I’ll share another day. Just makes you hate the evil one legged gold digger that bit more…

Book was stunning, his style effortless, his subjects totally at ease. A very interesting character, and as one of the snappers for Vogue Australia, I can see why Justine really did get some great opportunities to offend the ‘cream of Sydney’. Just as I did last time I was here.

But that’s a different story….

Iain is enjoying the Sydney Sun…

“The payment for me has always been in the doing. I didn’t get into [photography] for a job.” – Michael Zagaris, Photographer

With the Z-man before a recent 49er game

Michael Zagaris is not a household name and many might not even ever consider him to be a celebrity. Affectionately known as “The Z-man”, Michael is not just a photographer, but he’s a historian. Anyone who has lived in San Francisco in the past 50 years has seen his work and appreciated his ability to “capture the moment” although they might not even know who he is. He’s one of them. Politically active, fiercely independent and living and brieathing a job that he’s passionate about, Michael embodies the heart and soul of what living in San Francisco is about for most people. Michael moved here after his first passion failed him. Michael wanted to be a politician and was working on Capital Hill until the fateful day when Bobby Kennedy was shot. “I was right there behind him” , he has told many. In fact he has photos (then a hobby) of the Kennedys playing football in their back yard. In fact, although lean and in good shape, Michael was at one time a college football player and aspiring football player (let’s just say he would not have been anything like Gerald Ford).

Michael Zagaris pre-game

To appreciate Michael’s breadth of work one needs not necessarily look at his work as art, but as a portfolio of photos that tell a story. Michael’s photos are a combination of his relationship to his subject matter and his ability to put you there with him. At a 49er football game last week, my son poked me in the side and said look, there’s Michael waving at you. People around me laughed thinking that I was waving at the 49er cheerleaders, which wouldn’t have been bad either, but it was nice waving at an artist who has captured the imagery of my youth. Today, Michael is the official team photographer for the San Francisco 49ers and the Oakland A’s. You see, any sports fan, especially one from the San Francisco Bay Area would consider him to be the guy who has a dream job. On this day, the 49ers feted their original owner, Eddie DeBartolo, who saved the team and fans from misery and created a 5-Super Bowl dynasty during a halftime ceremony. Watching that ceremony is all you needed to know about Michael. Watching Eddie DeBartolo, come out, Michael started to take his photo but this multi-millionaire future Hall of Famer signaled for him to stop and hugged him first. This was followed by hugs with Ronnie Lott, Joe Montana and Jerry Rice, Hall of Famers and celebrities in their own right. That’s Michael. A friend first, historian and photographer second. His photos touch your soul and each person tells their own story of their recollection of that era when they look at his photos.

Like the great San Francisco Pulitzer Prize winning columnist, Herb Caen, Michael has captured the aura surrounding some of San Francisco’s greatest moments. Whether it was covering the great hippie culture and music scene of the 60s-70s in San Francisco’s Haight Ashbury, the great 49er dynasty of the ’80s or the Oakland A’s and the beginning of the steroid era of baseball in the late 80s and early 90s, Michael took you right there and showed you his unique perspective.

Michael and A's Outfielder Mark Sweeney

You see, Michael can give you the classic baseball card photo of a guy holding his bat and smiling, but he has an all-acess pass that shows you that same guy after throwing a 100 pitches and grimacing as they pour ice over his sore shoulder. On his kitchen table I found piles of photos he had just taken for the Oaklan A’s professional baseball team. I have no idea how he organizes them, so I didn’t sort through them too hard and obvioulsy was not too concerned with the subject. “Ah, a Giants fan”, he said. He nodded as we both knew what we were thinking. The 1989 World Series between the Oakland A’s and San Francisco Giants interrupted by the Loma Prieta earthquake which became more famous than the players who played in that series.

Taking more Football card photos

Sitting at his coffee table of his apartment just around the corner from Haight and Ashbury, Michael let me thumb through his archives. Just like a bookworm who might have books sitting in piles from the floor to ceiling, Michael has rows of mounted photos leaned up against the wall waiting for someone to come along and hang them up (Divorced from the mother of his grown son, Michael had just broken up with his girlfriend and asked me if I knew any hip women. I did recommend a friend but that is another story). Michael hands me one photo after I tell him I was a big Madonna fan and shows me the classic photo of Madonna from her 1990 Blond Ambition tour with her Jean Paul Gaultier cone bra that set a fashion trend for a couple years.

Michael, a historian was writing about English Rock’n'Roll when Eric Clapton noticed his hobby and told him he had real talent. From there Michael became linked to icons Roger Daltrey, Peter Frampton and Mick Jagger. He’s was added to their inner sanctum. As he rummages around a pile of photos scattered around the floor he throws in front of me a photo of Rick James….I look at him . “It’s Rick James, Bitch”, he says in his best Dave Chapelle impersonation. Rick James is leaning over a rock along the San Francisco Bay and snorting cocaine. He laughs and tells me a story about how he was going to do a cover shot for Rolling Stone Magazine when Rick James invited him to do some drugs. Well Michael in his convincing way somehow convinced a somewhat non-compliant Rick James to get outside and take a few photos. I can just see it. He has numerous photos around that tell stories. Stories that have never been told.

On my way out of his place we talk briefly about his marriage to a top model, the mother of his acting son who lives in LA. His son’s room is a shrine of baseball bobbleheads. It is the neatest room in this Upper Haight flat. He reminds me to let him know if I know of any women who would be looking for companionship. Michael is so cool. I don’t think I know of a single woman out there who could appreciate this eccentric visual historian of some of San Francisco’s most charming and colorful history.

Guys and gals. If you have any interest in items of historical value, like myself -thanks Sambo, Cicero’s letters to friends is still a favourite, then you need to check out Letters of Note. This is a great blog where they continue to collect/verify letters and correspondence from historically significant folks. Submissions are welcome. I love reading one of these when I come in in the morning. Everything from Gates pissed about piracy, to Jagger chatting up Warhol for an album cover. The one I read today from Einstein waxes. Photo above. Transcript below. Enjoy. – HT

Princeton, 3. 1. 1954

Dear Mr Gutkind,

Inspired by Brouwer’s repeated suggestion, I read a great deal in your book, and thank you very much for lending it to me … With regard to the factual attitude to life and to the human community we have a great deal in common. Your personal ideal with its striving for freedom from ego-oriented desires, for making life beautiful and noble, with an emphasis on the purely human element … unites us as having an “American Attitude.”

Still, without Brouwer’s suggestion I would never have gotten myself to engage intensively with your book because it is written in a language inaccessible to me. The word God is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weakness, the Bible a collection of honorable, but still purely primitive, legends which are nevertheless pretty childish. No interpretation no matter how subtle can (for me) change this. … For me the Jewish religion like all other religions is an incarnation of the most childish superstition. And the Jewish people to whom I gladly belong … have no different quality for me than all other people. As far as my experience goes, they are also no better than other human groups, although they are protected from the worst cancers by a lack of power. Otherwise I cannot see anything “chosen” about them.

In general I find it painful that you claim a privileged position and try to defend it by two walls of pride, an external one as a man and an internal one as a Jew. As a man you claim, so to speak, a dispensation from causality otherwise accepted, as a Jew of monotheism. But a limited causality is no longer a causality at all, as our wonderful Spinoza recognized with all incision…

Now that I have quite openly stated our differences in intellectual convictions it is still clear to me that we are quite close to each other in essential things, i.e. in our evaluation of human behavior … I think that we would understand each other quite well if we talked about concrete things.

With friendly thanks and best wishes,

Yours,

A. Einstein

IN THE ROLLING STONES’ NEW CON’ cert movie, Shine a Light, there is a vintage interview with guitarist Keith Richards. Cell Phones & Office A reporter asks Richards what he thinks about when he’s onstage playing with the Stones. Richards coolly replies, “I don’t think onstage. I feel.” Directed by Martin Scorsese, Shine a Light captures the Stones in their current feral prime, in breathtaking close-up. Scorsese shot the band in 2006, during two intimate shows at New York’s Bea¬con Theatre, with guest appearances by Buddy Guy, Christina Aguilera and Jack White of the White Stripes, who duets with Mick Jagger in a heated country-soul version of “Loving Cup,” from 1972’s Exile on Main Street. But Shine a Light — named after another Feedback Exile song and the latest in a long line of Stones documentaries, including Gimme Shelter (1970), Ladies and Gentlemen, The Rolling Stones (1974) and Coc\suc\er Blues, Robert Frank’s notorious, unreleased chronicle of the backstage excess on the Stones’ ‘72 U.S. tour — is a testament to the power of feeling, the blues-band empathy and brotherly defiance that continue to drive and define Richards, Jagger, guitar¬ist Ron Wood and drummer Charlie Watts in concert.

Shine a Light has also inspired a first: the following in¬terview with Richards and White, in front of a roaring fire in a New York townhouse on a recent wet, cold afternoon. Born half a lifetime and a few rock revolutions apart, Rich¬ards, 64, and White, 32, had never talked at length before. In fact, White did not see the Stones live until the White Stripes opened two Audio Accessories shows for them in 2002. But the two guitarists quickly bonded over their mutual love of the blues and the spontaneous joys of live performance. “It’s like describing the Pyramids to someone who has never been there,” White says, when asked what he feels in the middle of a hot guitar solo. “A man after my own heart,” Richards agrees, smiling.

Pandrogyny, a term, Kenneth highlighted to me. This is kinda overdue. Flipped through these during my research in music two weeks back. I am not exactly sure if I should archive everything here, maybe just the interesting tidbits.

Okay back to the smart talk, what’s pandrogyny really? Genesis Breyer P Orridge – founder of the bands Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV – has been an icon of the psychedelic and industrial rock music underworlds for some 30-odd years, pretty much coined this term. Jaye Breyer (best known as Lady Jaye), his/her other half passed away pretty recently due to heart failure. The two had previously embarked on a years-long pursuit of pandrogyny, undergoing painful plastic surgery procedures in order to become gender-neutral human beings that looked like each other. As s/he explains, this was not about achieving a standard of beauty. Once the body is no longer viewed as sacred, the possibilities are endless.

“We started out, because we were so crazy in love, just wanting to eat each other up, to become each other and become one,” explains Genesis. “And as we did that, we started to see that it was affecting us in ways that we didn’t expect. Really, we were just two parts of one whole; the pandrogyne was the whole and we were each other’s other half. DNA is really the new battleground for evolution. If we want to survive as a species, if we want to hopefully colonize space and do incredible things, we have to completely reassess how the human body works and realize that it’s not sacred, it’s just stuff. It’s time for us to step away from the prehistoric acceptance of the human body as it was and design ourselves. Why can’t we learn how to hibernate if we are going to go into space? Best way to travel to space is to be asleep for long journeys. Animals hibernate, so it can’t be that difficult.”

After reading through his interview, it brought me new light into why do androgyny, or in this case pandrogyny exists. Okay please assume that I am just talking about deliberate androgyny. Is there actually a greater good that people are seeking through this statement of physical traits? I start to ponder about looking like either gender, unisex and neutral. Are these terms different, or actually mean the same? There are different voices behind androgyny but are they all very different, or what can androgyny say for you? I was reading up on something something about it. It strays too far from pandrogyny, I’ll introduce in my next entry, coming up in a few hours time! Haha.

he just doesn't make a very pretty girl, but nonetheless we figure the idea behind this

Pandrogyny is deliberate changes from unlikeness to likeness. How about deliberate likeness without the operations? I wouldn’t confirm the deliberate part, well, it’s highly debated. Oh, that’s not the point, just get to the pictures already.

bianca jagger absolutely looks strangely like mick jagger

the bowie family of alikes

hello angela bowie

But I will like to highlight that angela bowie did go to some measures to resemble david bowie. Yes the hair, the hair was deliberately cut short. Okay, think in terms of couplehood, that’s quite romantic maybe? Haha, I’m not that sure. Brad Pitt dyes his hair to whatever his other half’s hair color is. I’m not too sure about this idea behind. Is looking like each other romantic? I hear that a lot, when two people start to hang out together a lot they begin to look like each other, works even between for man and pets. Well maybe, I’m not exactly going to fight this out, I’m more concerned about being alike right from the start. And so what does that say as well? The ego of your amazing looks? Is it amazing to date a somebody just like you? Or to prove that you can be another gender too? Really, tell me what you think about this.
