Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire, Natalie Portman, and director Jim Sheridan.  The collection of people who make up the new film Brothers reads like a Yankees starting line up.  Despite their track records, the film hasn’t really been in the Oscar conversation thus far.   When I finally saw the trailer for the film, which is out on Friday, I was confused.  Did I miss something? Is this a horror film? After being seduced by the resumes of the three cast members, upon first glance everything appears to be great.  A fallen soldier is determined dead in Afghanistan, a heartbroken wife struggles to keep her family together, all while the mixed up brother of the soldier pulls himself together to help take care of the family.  I also had forgotten how dreamy Jake Gyllenhaal is too (pause for reflection).  But of course, there is a twist: the soldier is very much alive, and makes his way home to find that his brother and wife have been comforting one another by sharing his bed.  Tobey’s reaction is extremely unsettling and seems a bit over the top.  I understand the emotion and intensity, but within this shortened clip everything seems so abrupt; his response, the music, the tempo are all the makings of a psychopath serial killer film with a Halloween release date.

Also, it’s awkward to hear the little daughter comment on who her mother is sleeping with.  I get it that she’s perceptive, and maybe Natalie and Jake were extremely obvious, but still “Mommy” and “sleeping with” should never be uttered in the same sentence.

The Daily Intel commented on David Letterman’s fanatical response to the film while interviewing Portman last week.  Dave himself admits he’s no film critic, but still I’m curious to see what people think, and may even check it out for myself.

So PEOPLE magazine was reporting over the weekend that Hollywood’s current Golden Couple had run their course and broken up. In other words, Reese had bursted in on Jake trying on her OLD wedding gown.

Their people are madly covering DENYING it as a “source” says:

“As much as everyone thinks they’re right there, they’re really not near the whole marriage thing. Jake would marry her tomorrow, but Reese doesn’t want to go there yet, even though he would like to. There’s a huge attraction between them, and they’ve becomes a team, partners, but Jake can be a little overbearing at times, and Reese is really happy with life right now. Why screw that up or change a good thing?”

I suggest Jake hand back the skirt to Elle Woods and simply WAIT his turn.

Donnie Darko aint got NOTHING on this!

Fresh from Ubisoft comes the news that a new Prince of Persia game will be free-running its way to multiple formats in May 2010.

However, Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands is not a sequel to the superb cel-shaded re-imagining of the series that we saw last year. Instead, this looks set to tie into the forthcoming Sands of Time movie starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Ben ‘I’ll take any job’ Kingsley.

The new title will supposedly bring together ‘fan favourite’ elements cherry picked from throughout the series so far, as well as injecting a healthy dose of new innovation to sweeten the deal.

Still, it will leave fans of the core series wanting. Whether or not we will see the Prince’s cel-shaded escapades continue in 2010 will remain to be seen.

Although yesterday all the American media said actors Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal have decided to end their relationship, it appears that the two are still together.

In response to the numerous articles appeared in the press yesterday on the subject, Nanci Ryder and Carrie Byalick, reps for Witherspoon and Gyllenhaal respectively, told People magazine: “They are still together.” .

Actress Gyllenhaal met on the sets of production “Rendition” (2007), and the two have admitted they are a couple in the summer of 2008.

It’s rumored that uber-cute couple, Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal, have broken up.  However, Reese’s rep told reporters today that ”It’s not true. They have not split.”

The couple first began their romance in 2007  when the two co-starred in the film Rendintion.  Hopefully the two can keep it together.

Hmm ok, so the US version of Susanne Bier’s Brothers premiers  on the 4th of December ‘09. Jim Sheridan directed it and this is what it looks like (and OMG Tobey looks way to much like a skinny-minny)

I always have a hard time accepting remakes of films, especially the ones that were fine to begin with (Infernal Affairs, anyone??). I mean, come on America if we slapped some subtitles on a reasonable well-written film the least you could do was watch it.  Not create this remake with actors who look like they are still teenagers.  I’m probably gonna watch it on DVD as it wont be anyway near Denmark until late 2010. Here’s hoping for a Tobey apperance at the Danish screening.

Jeg synes altid at de amerikanske remakes er pres (Nattevagten, anyone?). Susanne Biers “Brødre” blev købt og solgt og fikset til det amerikanske marked. Jim Sheridan instruerer, men Bier har fået lov til at beholde titlen som manusforfatter. Den nye version har premiere på fredag ovre i Guds eget land. Tobey Maguire, Natalie Portman og Jake Gyllenhaal spiller hovedrollerne, og jeg må sige de ser noget yngre ud end Thomsen, Lie Kaas og Nielsen…hmm…den får først premiere her i Danmark engang i 2010, den kan nok klares at blive set på DVD.

Er zijn de laatste tijd weer heel wat nieuwe trailers op het net verschenen. Ik heb er enkele uitgekozen die volgens mij zeker de moeite waard zijn om te gaan bekijken. Omdat het al een tijdje geleden is zijn het er extra veel.

“Brothers” is a tale of life mistaken. In creating this story, director Jim Sheridan has made his most accessible American picture yet simply from the highlighted use of his cast and a less Irish approach. Granted he made “Get Rich Or Die Tryin” but that was more specific to urban in a very precise way about the rise of 50 Cent. Here like some of his earlier films it is about the everyman. While the story might be basic in many ways, it is the casting and the directing that elevates this simple story. Both Jake Gyllenhaal and Natalie Portman elevate beyond their normal roles playing against type to where they can almost melt away. The only problem here is the persona vision of these stars even though they try to keep out of the tabloids unlike some other actors.

These roles are by far the most grown up roles of alot of these actors have played but even within that structure, you almost still see them as kids even though they are in their mid 30s. In retreating into almost suburbia, Portman takes on an almost Winslet quality. With the steady hand of director Sheridan guiding her, there is a lack of presumption which is visible in most of Portman’s work through no fault of her own. Her intelligence is exceptional but sometimes her emotion needs to purely come through without seeing the thinking, not just of her unawareness but in the simplicity of life. The caricatures created of the cheerleader, the football star and the outsider thereby are needed to create this sense of structure.

Jake is quite vindicated here in terms of his acting potential. He shows a depth missing from “Jarhead” and a vulnerableness that was present at times in “Donnie Darko” but perhaps, in many ways, not seen since then. His physical transformation no doubt due to “Prince Of Persia” informs his thoughts here. He is in much rougher form and yet that certain fragile element still comes through but without being forced. As a result, his pain is the most revealing and the most heartbreaking of all because despite his intent, he still can’t win.

Tobey Maguire is quite good but he has the thankless job of playing the man with the problems created in a very linear way yet with very little saved below the surface. His energy is focused but almost too extraneous. He has to viscerally show jealousy without overwhelming the scene which he sometimes fails at. The problem is that his acting has always been very wide eyed which plays against a subtle madness here making it not work as well. His intensity turns into a type of mugging for the character which would not be noticed as much if Jake’s performance wasn’t so rich.

Of course this element is nitpicking at times but ultimately what comes to bear is what different Oscar worthy performances Sheridan was able to get out of these actors. This movie also continues to show the efficiency of filmmaking which is quite interspersed in Lionsgate who shot most of the film in New Mexico making the most of the initiatives since the location can stand in for both Afghanistan as well as the US. In good order, the movie, as mentioned before, also forces Sheridan to remove himself from the structure he is so comfortable in at times which is urban sprawl or in his homeland. By doing this, one tends to see the gift this man truly has with his actors as Daniel Day Lewis has shown within his work many times before.

As a last note, the film is shot by Frederick Elmes who was the DP for David Lynch on many films including “Blue Velvet”. The richness of his images is not overwhelming yet one shot in the snow of Jake walking in silence at the end of the film is an undeniably iconic image that anchors the film and sets it apart than other war themed films we have seen of late.

“Brothers” is a story of human characters made by a group of actors that are at the top of their game. Adding to this perception is a stoic but viciously pinpoint turn of Sam Shepard as the father to these two boys who is now remarried to a different woman than their mother who died. Another standout also permeates in the form of Bailee Madison as one of the young daughters of Portman and Maguire. She matches most of the grown up actors toe to toe without being presumptious. Like Jake, in my mind, she deserves an Oscar nomination for their work because it is so purely emotional. The film is a surprise of riches wrapped in a small package, ready for delivery for those who are able to see its reflection. Out of 5, I give it a 3 1/2.

Every war is different, every war is the same.

– Anthony ‘Swoff’ Swofford

During my subscription of Details magazine circa 2003, I passed by a blurb for Anthony Swofford briefly discussing his memoir about his time in the Persian Gulf War called Jarhead. Sam Mendes directed the big screen adaptation of his story. I loved that the story is not a war movie, but a movie about young soldier’s journey.

Swofford (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a Marine recruit that is trying to find himself. He thought that the military was the best decision, but he regrets it. He is introduced to his platoon, Gulf Company. His initial reception does not turn out why the way that he thought. They tried to initiate him with a mock branding of the USMC.

Pretending that he has a stomach virus, he meets Staff Sgt. Sykes (Jaime Foxx) in the crapper. Seeing that Swofford is not as dumb as he thinks he is, Sykes wants Swofford to train as a scout sniper. Swofford jumps at the opportunity. He is teamed up with Troy (Peter Sarsgaard).

As the Iraqis invaded Kuwait, Second Platoon is deployed to the battle zone. The Marines think that they would be there a maximum of two weeks, but things changed. As part of Operation Desert Shield, their orders from their battalion leader Lt. Col. Kazinski (Chris Cooper) are to guard the oil fields that are a constant target of the Iraqi militants.

The platoon has to learn is about to the harsh conditions of the desert, how to survive the insurmountable boredom of non-combat conditions. As the days turn into months, Swofford’s mind begins to unravel as he learns that his girlfriend is cheating and he is not seeing any action.

Everybody knows how much of a “Gyllenhaalic” I am. I remember taking my ex-boyfriend to see this movie in the theaters. I was engrossed in the movie and I looked over to see that he was sleeping. That’s why he became an ex-boyfriend.

Sam Mendes has a way to make a monochromic setting into a thing of beauty. You see sand blackened with soot and ash from fireballs or burning oil wells in the distance. It’s like the screen is inverted.

Judgment: If you are the kind of person that doesn’t like gory war movie, you would enjoy

Su nueva pelicula, en la que comparte creditos con Tobey Maguire (Peter Parker en Spide-man) y con Jake Gyllenhaal, sin duda alguna Natalie lucia hermosa, perfecta en todo, desde el color del vestido, los zapatos y el maquillaje,  A+ para la actriz, Tobey Maguire asistio con su esposa luciendo mejor que en otros eventos, la cereza en el pastel se la llevo Jake quien no asistio a tan importante evento, tal vez Resee no le dio permiso!

The Cinema Society hosted a screening of “Me And Orson Welles” at Clearview Chelsea Cinemas yesterday in New York City. The cast, including Zac Efron, Claire Danes and Christian McKay were all in attendance.

Models Amber Rose and Lydia Hearst were also scout’d at the screening.

Natalie Portman and Tobey Maguire were snapped at the premiere for the new film “Brothers”, featuring both of them in lead roles. The film tells the story of two brothers, Captain Sam Cahill (played by Maguire) and  Tommy Cahill (played by Jake Gyllenhaal). Sam is about to embark on his fourth tour of duty. He’s married to his high school sweetheart, Grace (Portman), but when he goes missing, Tommy moves in to take care of Sam’s family (two daughters and Grace), and eventually falls in love with his brother’s wife….

Model Agyness Deyn and actor Terrence Howard were also in attendance.

The premiere of new musical “Fela!” on Broadway at Gotham Hall went down last night in NYC. Among those who turned up = Jay-Z, Spike Lee, Harry Belafonte and of course Bill T. Jones (who wrote the book alongside Jim Lewis).
