They drop on black friday ( November 27th) for $175 at select retailers; and have been seen by many sneakerheads as the most anticipated shoe of ’09.

However, Jordan Brand is releasing them as a limited edition quickstrike. So basically if you want a pair, get in line early and roll deep.

Yesterday, it was New England’s turn to feel a bit of Ida. Jealous Much? Didn’t think so

Yesterday, it was New England’s turn to feel a bit of Ida. Jealous Much? Didn’t think so. It basically rained all day, at sometimes pouring buckets. Not like I went outside much anyway because I was catching up on work, but the general atmosphere was a bit bland and gloomy. I found in that time I loved reading your delightful blogs with sunny pictures all the more, and that definitely powered me through the day After about 3 cups of coffee, I settled on a breakfast.

Pumpkin Oatmeal With Mighty Maple And Tempeh Bacon, Peanut Butter Greek yogurt With Tempeh Bacon

This had salty-sweet all over it. I love the smokiness of the tempeh bacon with the vanilla and maple flavors. And I ate it in bed I really could eat any meal in bed since that’s about 2 feet from where I normally do, but for some reason it felt more special on a rest day. While I was eating this I caught up on HIMYM, 30 Rock, and The Office. The last one was by far the funniest of the group this week. That last scene–hilarious! And I really hope Barney and Robin aren’t through for good Afterwards, my laundry was ready.

Clean Laundry

I’m really glad no one’s awake when I am because then it wasn’t so weird to think “I want these pajamas I’m wearing to be washed, too” while I was at the machines and stripped down to my boxers. As weird as it is, putting away laundry is one of the few chores I like. I don’t know why, but I find it calming, like putting away the dishes. Things I don’t like: vacuuming, cleaning hard surfaces, making the bed. I wasn’t hungry for lunch until almost 2, but I was quite pleased with what I ended up whipping together.

Runny Eggs, Vermont Sweet Bread, Broccoli

Strawberry Marmalade With Orange Liquer

My microwaving of eggs isn’t perfect, but it’s definitely better. Nothing exploded this time I love the vermont sweet bread; I think you can taste the hint of maple syrup. And to top it all off I had some jam on the side to dip anything and everything in. Overall, the eggs and bread “breakfast style” were very satisfying. Some study snacks followed.

Zevia Twist And Wintergreen Newman's Own Organic Mints

Because when you’re studying, you need carbonation and good breath to focus. I ended up spending most of the afternoon working on my final essay. There was a made for TV movie on which was, by all accounts, pretty crappy, but sometimes the crappy movies are the most entertaining ones. It took a fellow blog to remind–yes, remind–me that I had pumpkin bread in the fridge from last weekend.

Pumpkin Bread With Chocolate Chips

Yum! I like baking breads plain sometimes so you can mush in chocolate chips when you feel like them or just leave them out if you aren’t in the mood. After 30 seconds in the microwave this was good to go. A bit of sunshine came to my day when a friend from high school who was visiting another friend came to campus. Major props to them for finding my dorm at the worst hour of the storm; they stopped by my dorm and I put aside the books to chat for 15 minutes before they had to head off. After that it was back to writing, and a bit of eating.

Chobani With Pepita Sun Butter

I’m not a total fan of nut butters in yogurt but this was good nevertheless. If anything, it was good just to have a spoonful of pepita sun butter I actually finished that essay(wahoo!) and then got a text that my dinner plans fell through, 30 minutes before the fact at a time when I had not much in the fridge to fall back on(not wahoo). I decided to head off to Thayer Street to see if any new plans might emerge.

Starbucks Decaf

First up was Starbucks because I had a coupon for a free tall coffee that expired tomorrow. I love making them make me decaf. Is that a bad thing to enjoy? I figure they’re getting paid to make coffee so they might as well make coffee. After looking at all the restaurants, I decided there wasn’t anything I wanted. Thayer Street has some great sit down places if you want to pay sit down prices, but I was feeling frugal. Instead I went to see what I could get from The Ratty.

Vegetable Medley, Vegan Spicy Dahl

I don’t remember the last time I ate only dining hall food in my room; this might have been a first. I’m no Indian food expert at all, but this dahl was good, or at least as good as what I had from Whole Foods, and it would have cost me much less. But when they said spicy, they meant spicy. I almost had to call it quits. I like that they kept the skin on the potatoes for some fiber, too.

Is it to early for Christmas music? I hope not, because I had that playing all not. Oh well, if it is, there wasn’t anyone around to be judging On Mythbusters they intertwined page by page 2 phone books and it wouldn’t pull apart at all except with the aid of two tanks. It was ridiculous! I knew those things are dangerous. Eventually I had a snack that hit the spot just right.

Banana Oats With Butter Toffee Peanut Butter, Cinnamon-Vanilla Frosting, And A Glass Of Silk Nog

This was a spice extravaganza. In the oats was cinnamon and vanilla powder, and in the frosting was cinnamon and Silk eggnog. More eggnog was reserved for the side I love it! It needs a little stevia to sweeten up to my level but once it’s there it’s perfect. Why do things like this have to be seasonal? I couldn’t imagine not having this now. Speaking of seasonal…

Spooky Smores Z-Bar

Things got a little spooky before bed, but no one was harmed I forgot how good these were and how I need to stock up! They should still be out for a while even though Halloween’s over, right?

This morning I woke up at 8:30 with a little nudge from the alarm. I hung around until I knew the gym would be open, but when I got outside I realized how warm it was. No sun still, but perfect running temp. I changed my plans, grabbed this bar, and put on my Garmin.

Clif Mountain Mix Mojo

This was sooo good. I wish I had more than 5 minutes to enjoy it. I swear this one had more chocolate chips than the first time I had it, which I wasn’t complaining about. I did a run that I’ve been wanting to do for a while in my mind but never got around to. I went over to East Providence and ran along this lovely path where there were a lot of runners out. I went down to a tree 3 miles out, circled it, came back and circled a little rose garden and repeated. On the way home I ran into Whole Foods to grab a weekender flier which I’m sure confused some people. All in all the run was 9.6 miles and I did it in 1:16:23. That works out to a 7:57 mile average! I knew I was faster outside but wow that was fast. After communicating with my parents and showering I sat down to a late breakfast, or rather a brunch.

Eggnog Yogurt, Pumpkin Oats With Mighty Maple And White Chocolate Chips

My brunches look shockingly like my breakfasts, and my after dinner snacks. if that were a problem, I’d be fixing it, but my taste buds say no way, Jose. I added a little cinnamon to the eggnog yogurt and it was perfecto! I think I like cinnamon with it better than nutmeg; the nutmeg is a little abrasive.

For today there is some good stuff in store but I’ll let it be a surprise until tomorrow. Instead, go over to Errign’s blog and enter her giveaway for a really nice bracelet. I’m just starting to think about Christmas present and that’d be great to give to someone I know.

So I’ve been “trying out” for the guitarist part for a band called The Captive. Great group of guys/musicians. I had one jam session with them last Thursday (11/12) and it went really well, and I had a lot of fun. They want to do a couple more sessions before making a final decision, so hopefully these will go well. But please keep it in your prayers that this is where God is leading me, and that I do this for His glory and not my own. If you want to check out their music I’ve posted the link below. I’ll keep you updated on this.

Rihanna earns her 12th career top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart released today, as “Russian Roulette” rockets 75-9, triggered by first-week download sales of 132,000, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

“Russian Roulette” also opens at No. 9 on Digital Songs and edges 36-35 on Radio Songs/Hot 100 Airplay with 29.4 million audience impressions. The song’s digital release coincided with the singer’s first public comments since being assaulted by then-boyfriend Chris Brown in February. Rihanna participated in a three-part interview with Diane Sawyer on ABC’s “20/20″ and “Good Morning America” Nov. 5 and 6.

Rihanna’s 12 Hot 100 top 10s place her second among female acts this decade, trailing only Beyoncé’s 13 top 10s since 2000. “Russian Roulette” previews Rihanna’s new album, “Rated R,” due Nov. 23.

When Beyonce released her latest album, “I Am … Sasha Fierce,” she stated on her official web site, “I am in a different place right now and I wanted people to see the many sides of me. The music is upbeat for the dance, fun side and it is reflective, passionate and serious for the personal side. I have taken risks here. I am not afraid and my music will explain it all. There is no label or tag on my sound.”

As “Sweet Dreams” this week makes its way to the Adult Contemporary chart at No. 29, while remaining bulleted in the top five of the Rhythmic and Hot Dance Airplay radio charts, the four Billboard Hot 100 top 10s from the album clearly represent four very different sides of the superstar’s artistry.

First cut “If I Were a Boy” signaled an intimate, acoustic turn, while “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” oppositely aimed for more core R&B/hip-hop audiences (ultimately becoming a pop-culture crossover smash). “Halo,” co-penned by OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder, fared best at mainstream top 40 radio, with its lush production and obvious hook. The current “Sweet Dreams” is perhaps the most pure dance song Beyonce has ever released, solo or with Destiny’s Child.

The variety of sounds in the set’s singles follows the tradition of albums that not only produced a bounty of radio hits, but also an artistic mini-reinvention on each track.

Many star acts have drastically evolved over years and albums – the Beatles, Elton John, Chicago, Heart, Sting – but when such a buffet of styles is evident on a single album, the dimensions of an artist’s creativity are magnified.

Here, then, is a sampling of 10 more pop albums over the past 25-plus years whose hit songs showed artists through a different prism with every single. (The philosopher Gump would describe the phenomenon in confectionary terms).

If variety is the spice of life, these artists found recipes for success when mining the many sides of their talents:

Cyndi Lauper, “She’s So Unusual,” 1983-85
Lauper will always be best-known for the joyous kitsch of “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun,” but it was the evergreen ballad follow-up “Time After Time” that became her first Hot 100 No. 1. Third single “She Bop” featured textbook ’80s synthesizers, and “All Through the Night,” written by pop/rock singer-songwriter Jules Shear, found Lauper in a gentle, midtempo groove. The set’s guitar-based fifth hit “Money Changes Everything” took the singer to new heights (No. 37) on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart.

Bangles, “Different Light,” 1986-87
Prince’s (or “Christopher”’s) pure pop “Manic Monday” gave way to the jangly, Byrds-like “If She Knew What She Wants” (also written by Shear). The quirky “Walk Like an Egyptian” continues to sound unique (Weezer’s current “(If You’re Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To” could be a distant descendant), and “Walking Down Your Street” found the band most closely channeling its earlier punk-pop influences.

Madonna, “True Blue,” 1986-87
The Material Girl’s third album showcased more mature sounds than the younger-skewed “Madonna” and “Like a Virgin,” with all five singles reaching the top 20 on the Adult Contemporary chart. Ballad “Live to Tell” led off, followed by the bouncy “Papa Don’t Preach.” The album’s title cut was reminiscent of ’60s girl-group R&B/pop, and “Open Your Heart” brought Madonna back to her dance roots. By the time the Latin-tinged “La Isla Bonita” topped Adult Contemporary, the musical (and lyrical) experimentation that would infuse later ground-breaking hits like “Vogue” and “Justify My Love” was becoming her trademark.

George Michael, “Faith,” 1987-88
Leaving behind the sugary, Motown-inflected “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” and “Freedom” as the creative force in “Wham!,” Michael ruled the Hot 100 with four No. 1s from his solo debut. Billboard’s top album of 1988 yielded the controversial “I Want Your Sex,” the church organ-driven title cut, gospel anthem “Father Figure,” ethereal ballad “One More Try,” dance jam “Monkey” and swinging lounge number “Kissing a Fool.”

B-52’s, “Cosmic Thing,” 1989-90
The Athens, Georgia, troupe had been beloved in alternative circles for the left-field punk-pop classics “Rock Lobster” and “Private Idaho” until “Love Shack” lifted the band to mainstream stardom. Follow-up single “Roam” balanced the act’s newfound pop success with its rock origins, as did the easy-paced “Deadbeat Club.” The album also produced two rock radio-exclusive hits most reminiscent of the group’s ever-eccentric earlier work: the title track and “Channel Z.”

Paula Abdul, “Spellbound,” 1991-92
After a run of four dance-pop Hot 100 No. 1s from “Forever Your Girl,” Abdul was anything but idle on her sophomore set, beginning with her first hit ballad, “Rush Rush,” which reigned over the Hot 100 for five weeks. “Promise of a New Day” approximated her earlier uptempo smashes, and Abdul then scored with two more keyboard-driven slow songs: “Blowing Kisses in the Wind” and “Will You Marry Me.” “Vibeology” found the singer exploring early-’90s techno territory along the lines of decade-defining hits both before (C&C Music Factory, “Gonna Make You Sweat”) and after (Haddaway, “What Is Love”).

Mariah Carey, “Daydream,” 1995-96
After singles from her earlier albums alternated between soaring ballads and dance fare, “Daydream” foreshadowed that Carey was a butterfly preparing to fly artistically. “Fantasy,” with its sample of Tom Tom Club’s “Genius of Love,” began her transition to a more R&B-centered sound (“Honey,” “Loverboy” and other collaborations with hip-hop and rap contemporaries would follow), while quintessential Carey ballad “One Sweet Day,” with Boyz II Men, became the longest-ruling No. 1 (16 weeks) in Hot 100 history. “Always Be My Baby” melded pop and R&B with an acoustic undertone, and waltzy ballad “Forever” paid tribute to ’50s and ’60s soul standards like “In the Still of the Night” and “Unchained Melody.”

Avril Lavigne, “Let Go,” 2002-03
The then-17-year-old burst onto pop and adult radio with “Complicated” in 2002, and the set’s next two singles illustrated her range. “Sk8er Boi” played up her youthful punk image, while the pendulum shifted with the tender ballad “I’m With You.” Lavigne’s favorite song on the album, fourth single “Losing Grip,” presented a moodier, modern rock-leaning edge reminiscent of tracks on fellow female Canadian trailblazer Alanis Morissette’s “Jagged Little Pill.”

Rihanna, “Good Girl Gone Bad,” 2006-08
Six hits deep, including its “Reloaded” re-release, the album sported styles suitable for pop, R&B, dance and adult radio, starting with the multi-format monster “Umbrella.” “Shut Up and Drive” interpolated New Order’s “Blue Monday,” while “Hate That I Love You” emphasized guest Ne-Yo’s signature adult R&B smoothness. Reviving Michael Jackson’s “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’,” “Don’t Stop the Music” was Rihanna’s furthest foray into dance since her debut hit “Pon De Replay.” “Take a Bow” sent the singer to her highest Adult Contemporary peak (No. 21), and “Disturbia” accentuated synth-pop stylings. The set also included her rhythmic/rock duet with Maroon 5, “If I Never See Your Face Again.” (By the haunting sounds of her new single “Russian Roulette,” it appears that Rihanna’s forthcoming album “Rated R” will continue her penchant for intriguing sonic sojourns).

The Black Eyed Peas, “The E.N.D.,” 2009
Not only did the act make Hot 100 history by remaining atop the chart for 26 consecutive weeks, but the songs that granted the Peas the record also spotlight their unbridled inventiveness. Following the trippy “Boom Boom Pow” and the melodic “I Gotta Feeling,” the group stirs up disco-era grooves with its latest, “Meet Me Halfway.” The album builds upon the variety of Fergie’s 2006 solo debut, “The Dutchess,” which traversed rhythmic/hip-hop (“London Bridge,” “Fergalicious,” “Clumsy”), dance (“Glamorous”) and adult pop (“Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Finally”).

Michael Jackson’s concert movie “This Is It” has taken more than $200 million at box offices worldwide in the first two weeks of release, the studio behind the movie said on Thursday.

Sony Pictures Entertainment said the movie had grossed $61 million in North America and more than $140 million internationally. Japan ($27.2 million) and the UK ($14.3 million) were particularly strong markets.

The movie is now the 22nd biggest grossing movie worldwide of 2009, according to industry tracker boxofficemojo.com

“This Is It”, distributed by Sony Corp-owned Columbia Pictures, was compiled from footage of Jackson rehearsing for a series of planned comeback concerts before his sudden death in June.

Sony paid concert promoters AEG and Jackson’s estate about $60 million for the right to make and distribute the movie.

The $200 million plus gross is almost three times more than 2008’s “Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour” — a movie some box office watchers had used as a benchmark for “This Is It.”

The Jackson film opened on October 28 for a planned two week run but has since been extended until early December.

I found this recipe last year when I was on a jam kick. It is a blog called ‘atto recipe

I found this recipe last year when I was on a jam kick. It is a blog called ‘atto recipe’ (あっとレシピ) and was posted in Japanese. This was a surprise. I was actually expecting to find this to be only mediocre but was pleasantly surprised. My mother’s (and grandmother’s) pumpkin pie recipe uses orange juice so I was expecting to cinnamon and ginger missing from this jam recipe. This jam is very fruity, a bit tart and sweet – altogether a great recipe and a future repeat. Also, a great color. Me thinks it will be toast for breakfast tomorrow.

Kabocha Jam

zucca-san from あっとレシピ

420g kabocha, peeled, deseeded and chopped into large pieces

1/2 cup granulated sugar (I used brown this time)

350cc orange juice

splash of lemon juice (I roughly squeezed half a lemon)

Add all ingredients to a large saucepan and bring to a boil. Boil until the kabocha is tender. Turn off the heat and puree everything. Heat again and then put in sterilized jars.

I got 2 1/2 x 200mL jars and 2 x 100mL jars.  Giving the little ones away tonight.

As like all recipes that were originally posted in Japanese, I cannot guarantee that what I did was exactly what the author did.

This is a delicious cake to welcome the winter season with!

The texture of the dough works perfectly with the freshness of the jam filling and the richness of the buttery chocolate frosting.

You will be amazed by its wonderful taste!

~~~
To make the cake you need:
2/3 cup (150 grams) unsalted butter, room temperature
6 tablespoons (85 grams) granulated white sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 egg yolks
4 egg whites
5 ounces (150 grams) semi-sweet chocolate
1 cup (130 grams) all purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
2 tablespoons cocoa
For the filling you need:
1 1/2 cups (375 grams) jam (raspberry or strawberry or forest fruit)
For the frosting you need:
6 ounces (180 grams) semi-sweet chocolate
6 tablespoons (84 grams) unsweetened butter
1 cup (115 grams) confectioner’s (or powdered) sugar, sifted
7 teaspoons milk
~~~

1. Preheat an oven to 350 F (175 C).

2. Grease and flour your 9 inch (23 cm) spring form pan.

3. Now we mix our dry ingredients – the flour, cocoa and baking powder.

Set the bowl aside.

11. Fill the spring form pan with the batter and spread it evenly.

Place in the oven and bake for about 35 minutes.

12. When baked, remove from the oven and let cool.

13. Spread one half of the jam over the bottom layer of the cake.

Place the second layer on top of the first and cover the whole cake with the rest of the jam.

14. Now we are going to prepare the chocolate frosting.

Melt the butter and chocolate over simmering water.

15. When nicely melted, add the sifted sugar and the milk and whisk together.

16. Spread the frosting over the whole cake.

You can also sprinkle a little cocoa over the top.

Refrigerate for at least 6 hours.

Enjoy!

This is another Costco story, but a dark and stormy one. You’d think all I do is shop at is Costco, but really, it’s just new and intriguing.

C. and her new boyfriend were coming to visit and wanted me to cook for them, so I asked S. to pick up a pork loin, with the intention of roasting it with Giada’s fig sauce–which is really good, you should try it. I popped mixed baby potatoes in the oven with rosemary, garlic, olive oil, salt and pepper at 400:

Then I went to prepare the pork. I opened the package, and a rotten, awful smell spewed forth. I called in reinforcements to second my smelling intuition, and indeed everyone agreed that the pork was rotten. So it was time to think fast.

I didn’t have any other meat on hand but frozen chicken thighs, and wasn’t feeling inspired by them. I did, however, have a Trader Joe’s pie crust (yes–store bought. It was handy in a pinch!). And broccoli. And a dozen eggs. And cheese. So after some debate, I threw together a quiche:

Which was tasty, but still left me with 12 oz of dried mission figs and a bottle of port. Seemed a shame to let them go to waste. So, I whipped up a fig jam in my food processor, which I served over ice cream. The result was gooey and fig newton–like, in the best possible way.

Fig Jam

12 oz dried mission figs, cut in half and stems removed
1 c. port
4 T. balsamic vinegar
2 T. honey
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1 pinch of salt

Add all ingredients to a medium saucepan over low heat and simmer until the wine has reduced by half and figs are soft. With an immersion blender or cuisinart, mix until blended thoroughly. Serve over ice cream.

Admittedly, it was the easiest thing to make of the night, but it was really delightful. Paired with SB.’s apple-chard pie (which should be a blog post in and of itself), it was divine.

And with that, dinner was saved!
