Oscar bait.  That sums up this movie.  I’m sure it’s a good movie, but you don’t hire Helen Mirren, Christopher Plummer and Paul Giamatti without the Oscars on your mind.  Also the fact that it’s about the drama in Leo Tolstoy’s personal life doesn’t hurt.  I won’t pretend that I know anything about Tolstoy, but War & Peace is somewhere on my list of books to read (sure it is).

Wanted, released in 2008, what a film! Directed by Timer Berkmambetov, I was amazed by the acting, special effects and visual style of this film, it was incredible. Basically the plot of the film is rather simple but complex in the techniques it is portrayed to the audience. Wesley Gibson (James McAvoy) has an average lifestyle, boring job, cheating girlfriend who is betraying him with his best friend, which he is aware of however, too afraid to say anything. To top this all, his boss at work humiliates him every chance she has. His life seems to be on hold, until mentor Fox (Angelina Jolie) comes and takes him from his average styled life, introduces him to the Fraternity which is a secret society of assassins and trains him up in order to kill a strayed assassin called Cross. However, not everything is what it seems, lying and cheating in his life is becoming a habit he is having to become used to and it is down to him to get a grasp on his life and take control of individuals who are taking him for a ride.

Also starring Morgan Freeman (Shawshank Redemption) this film is a must see. The car chases, explosions, gadgets and cars are incredible, I would buy the film just watch them again. So can you bend a bullet? Ha, I think I probably could, who am i kidding?

Вспомнила, вспомнила! Наконец-то вспомнила, где мне запомнились эти голубые глаза треугольничком, грустно-ироничное (мое любимое!) выражение лица и бородка! Фавн из Хроник Нарнии! А все потому, что сегодня посмотрела милую (ну да, почти все, что я смотрю и люблю подходит под определение «милое») романтическую сказку о Пенелопе – красивой девочке с поросячьим рыльцем. Впечатление хорошее. А почему бы и нет?) За героев искренне переживаешь, силиконовый носик не портит Кристину Риччи, и в конце по нему даже немного скучаешь
Главный герой симпатичный и благородный ровно настолько, чтобы это не стало приторным, а круги под глазами придают мрачный и таинственный вид, так что сразу видно – у молодого человека либо бурная молодость, либо куча дурных привычек. Азартные игры, например.
В инете я его искала недолго – это, оказывается, Джеймс МакЭвой / James McAvoy – невысокий (ну очень невысокий))) молодый шотландец, успевший влюбить в себя героинь Энн Хэтэуэйи, Киры Найтли и Анжелины Джоли (“Becoming Jane”, “Atonement”, “Wanted”) пр. И да, в чем-то потертом и потрепанном, небритым и невыспавшимся он мне нравится гораздо больше, чем довольным собой, ухоженным и (о Боже мой) ровно причесанным.
Не знаю, почему, но при взгляде на его лицо мне подумалось, что он будет заметно стареть…как…ну кто…ну, Роберт Шон Леонард, например (см. Общество мертвых поэтов и потом Хауса). А с другой стороны – он же щотландец! Эти везучие мужики всегда стареют так красиво…
Кстати, мне очень кадр понравился, где он на дереве сидит и на озеро смотрит – так на Алекса из Заводного Апельсина похож!

He ahí el pecado de estos hombres (y una mujer): sacarle poco jugo a sus sueldos, más o menos generosos, pero soñados por cualquier mortal.

Se lleva la palma Will Ferrel, actor ¿cómico? que no deja de embarcarse en proyectos a cual más fallidos y que recauda 3,29 dólares por cada uno que se embolsa. Esta cifra, así, sin ponerla en contexto puede dejarnos fríos, pero acudamos a la socorrida comparación que nos proporciona la propia Forbes: en el extremo opuesto, la antítesis de Ferrell, el tierno Shia LaBeouf, gracias a sus dos Transformers, genera 160 dólares por película. ¡Casi 50 veces más que Ferrell! Tremendo.

Aquí se puede consultar ambas listas, la de los losers y la de los winners. Para los que sientan pereza ante el trámite, vaya por delante que a Ferrell, entre los menos rentables, le siguen Ewan McGregor, Billy Bob Thornton, Eddie Murphy y Ice Cube. Menudo plantel. Salvo Billy Bob, y en menor medida Ewan, el resto son para echarles de comer aparte (Ice Cube no debe ser siquiera considerado actor). En el otro extremo de la balanza, a LaBeouf le siguen James McAvoy, Michael Cera, Daniel Radcliffe y Robert Downey Jr.

Conclusión: para ser rentable hay que saber actuar (un mínimo), elegir bien el proyecto y, a poder ser, caer en una de esas superproducciones que hacen muchos dólares. Claro que a estas listas tampoco hay que concederles más importancia de la necesaria: si tu caché es bajo, es fácil que salgas bien parado en términos de productividad, y viceversa. Lo grave para Ferrell y compañía es que, a buen seguro, los ejecutivos de Hollywood sí se toman estas cosas muy, pero que muy en serio.

O procurado

Engraçado… me lembro de quando esse filme saiu. Fiquei louca porque eu AMO a Angelina Jolie e o James McAvoy. Assim que saiu a versão em boa qualidade na internet, eu baixei. Tomei o maior susto da minha vida. Tah, eu sabia que seria filme de ação e já estava esperando algo ao mesmo patamar que Tomb Raider. Afinal de contas, a Angelina adora essas porcarias. Quer a verdade? Achei pior. O filme é chato. Não tenho nada contra ação, gosto de alguns filmes até, mas esse ai… Pior que o James McAvoy decidiu fazer isso? Gente! Ele é o JAMES MCAVOY. Ele não precisa disso, a arte corre nas veias dele. As vezes ele precisava de satisfazer um desejo de menino ou sei lá o que… OK… estou tentando achar uma desculpa para justificar a presença dele no filme… não consegui. Com a Angelina eu até me acostumei. Ela faz 3 filmes horríveis para  fazer um bom. Infelizmente… ela é tão talentosa… acho que poderia aproveitar mais seu talento. Este dai, tirando algumas partes beeeem hilárias, não presta nenhum pouco. Recomendo para quem gosta de filmes como Star Wars e esses filmes com bons efeitos gráficos. (Aliás, esse dai realmente neste ponto é show de bola!)

Ressaca de amor

Ok… não dava nada por este filme. Na verdade, ele não é lá essas coisas. Mas a história é até legal. Me critiquem, mas eu acho o hilário! E não o acho hilário só por causa do filme. Ele tem uma cara de maluquinho e quando mistura aquele sotaque britânico com aquela vozinha dele. Eu me mato de tanto rir. Reparei também em como a Mila Kunis é bonita. Gente, é de dar inveja. Acho que o ponto alto do filme (e eu me leembro de teram comentado isso na net até mesmo antes de lançamento) é o Jason Segel. Na verdade, não é bem ele e sim os predicados dele! Isso mesmo! Ele mostrou tuuuuudoooo. Bem dotado o garoto, eu diria. Bom, pra quem gosta de comédia, tá aí um filme legal e sem besteirol… Não é do tipo de filme que amo, mas também não é do tipo que odeio!

Elizabeth: a era de ouro

Confesso que não gostava da Cate Blanchett, mas aprendi a respeitá-la. Ela é realmente uma excelente atriz. O filme tem Clive Owen, que é bom ator, mas eu, sei lá… toda vez que olho pra ele acho que´ele está sujo. Hahahahah…. coisas da minha cabeça! Alguém dê banho neeeeleeee!!!!  Ok… voltando para o filme, não pe tão bom quanto o primeiro. Nele tem informações que poderiam conter em 2 filmes! Eu adoro história e fiquei muito empolgada para assistir, e, como já sei esta história de cabo a rabo, já esperava me decepcionar… sabe aquela história de “o livro ser sempre melhor que o filme?”. Eu acho que, neste caso, o diretor tentou colocar tudo da história e, como disse, muita informação para um filme só. Recomendo o filme  e também recomendo que se informem sobre a era  de ouro da rainha Elizabeth I (wikipédia está de bom tamanho) e que assistam o filme de 1998 (este sim, muuuuuiiiiitoooo bom!) antes de assistir este.

Living in New York City, I see celebrities fairly often.

Sometimes they are simply walking down the street in my neighborhood.  Jerry Seinfeld, John McEnroe, and Kevin Bacon live within 2-3 blocks of me, so it’s not uncommon to see them with their kids.

Other times I see celebrities in the Times Square area in a bar or restaurant. I saw Daniel Radcliffe of “Harry Potter” fame get carded at a bar — by my friend Lucas, who was bartending — one of my favorite New York moments.  And, of course, I have seen them from time to time when I do extra work on a movie or TV show.

But this week, I have discovered a new venue for celebrity sightings, and I wanted to pass this along to anyone coming to Manhattan for a visit.

A great place to see celebrities in NYC?  The horse path in Central Park between 7-8am.

The past two mornings, the weather has been cool and brisk, and Rory Dog and I have been up early with all the other dogs and their people in the park.  On Thursday morning, I saw a group of four runners go by, and one of them — I’m darn certain — was actor James McAvoy, who starred in “The Last King of Scotland,” “Atonement,” “Becoming Jane,” and “Wanted.”

I’m guessing the other runners were a combination of trainers/bodyguards in case a fan like me decided to take chase.

I don’t know that I would thought much about it except this morning, as Rory and I were walking along in the sunshine, I noticed another group of four runners similarly dressed coming towards me, and I wondered if it might be McAvoy again.  But when I looked closer, I realized one of the runners was Adrien Brody, who won an Oscar for “The Piano.”

Maybe both actors are staying at the same hotel or working with the same gym;  I don’t know.  But they are sending the celeb’s out in the park on the Upper West Side for their early morning runs.

Just so you know.  In case ya wanna take a gander.

That’s New York City.  Always something to see.

Why is he right on top? Well, he's the one star who's got everything. Lean, sinewy body, attractive shoulders, a dashing smile isn't all. He's goofy, loopy, with a hint of androgyny. And his talents are numerous. And he makes no show about it ever. That's enough to have us hook, line and sinker.

The 'Bra' from Brangelina makes it into the top 5. Yes, we're still unhappy that he keeps a low profile. Why deny us of the visual pleasure, Pitt. Yes, Jolie is hot. But we like you too. And his most recent appearance in Inglorious Basterds is no salve. That handlebar moustache just doesn't fly. We'll wait for him to show up in all his glory. In the mean time, the reruns of the Oceans series will have to suffice. Sigh!

5 Christian Bale

The middle spot is taken up by the one star we feel safe ogling at from a distance. Why the distance? Well, he even made the character in American Psycho oddly attractive. Now that can't be good. We've got a feeling if we get any closer to this hunk, things could get fatal. It's bad enough we're breathless every time we lay eyes on him.

6 Hugh Jackman

He's hands down the nicest star in Hollywood. He's so nice we can't even get ourselves to grudge his wife. We bet no star has an easy time envying his numerous skills ranging from singing to dancing as he's just too darn endearing!

7 George Cloney

His half-smirk is to die for! He may have had a pot-bellied pig for pet, he may fancy waitresses, but he's still George Clooney, the most eligible bachelor in tinsel town. Give him a bat mobile or give him some chips for poker, he'll still have us sighing over his quizzical frown. Yes, we attempted verse. That's how much we adore him!

8 Alan Rickman

Professor Snape from the Harry Potter franchise certainly isn't the hottest man around. And that's what makes him so desirable! Take a hint, boys. Women don't always go for chiseled abs and muscular arms. Sarcasm and a great voice work great too!

9 James McAvoy

would've thought the carrot top in The Last King of Scotland would make Forest Whitaker's skills take a back seat. This scrawny actor is just so incredibly irresistible with those soulful blue eyes. He's got us so hooked that we'll even swallow his lame role in Wanted.

In fact he got well noticed from the show that aired in 2005 on FOX named Reunion. He actually started making it big in the year 2006 when he got the permanent role in the serial Brothers & Sisters aired on ABC channel. And for the people who hate college, Dave dropped out of college and finished his diploma from SUNY very very recently, on 15th may 2009. May be this is one more factor which adds to his sexiness. It is a fact that all the films that have featured Johny have grossed more than 4 billion dollars worldwide. Johnny Depp has won 3 Oscars and has won other 34 awards and has been nominated for 48 awards. He also became popular because of the serial aired on Fox channel, “21 Jump street”. Guess who just got sexier among the top 10 sexiest men in the world? Yeah! that’s right! Our “Wanted” guy. I didn’t know that dodging bullets would make one sexy! (I should start learning it). We’ve all seen James coupled with Angelina Jolie pulling off some cool action flicks in “wanted”. Born on 21st April 1979 in Scotland James got his first role in “The Near Room” in 1995 and went on to star in Regeneration. His drama serial Shameless won him comedy awards. He took off with his film The “Last King of Scotland”. And here is a quick info.. He was nominated for the best kiss award for the movie “wanted”. To whom does the sexiest lady on earth go to? 4th among the top 10 sexiest men in the world? Hmm.. May be that is one reason why he has come down in the sexiest list. If Brad were alone, I believe he’d have been the top 1. But look at all those girls (and guys too) who still find him sexy!. Born on 18th December 1963 in Shawnee, Oklahoma, he was raised in Springfield. His early acting began in “Dallas” right from 1987 (gosh! I was just born in that year). He found himself recognized when he took the role of supporting actor in twelve monkeys. But his breakthrough came when people found him in Fight club and Ocean’s series. And try not to forget the Benjamin Button! It swept the 2009 Oscars!. Brad both acts and Produces and does Husbandry for Jolie too! Way to go Brad!. Oh come on! who says you should have Oscars and Armani to be sexy! look at the 3rd boy among the top 10 sexiest men in the world, Ryan; he doesn’t have that long tailed career, but yet has climbed up to the 3rd spot. How? looks does matter!. Born on October 23, 1976, has been ever since noticed as one of the brilliant Canadian TV actor ( majorly “Two guys and a girl”). He was born in Vancouver. Ryan began his career in the movies in 1993 with the “Ordinary Magic”. Ryan has been better noticed by the comedy roles that he has played, although he acted in the horror movie “The Amityville horror”. And we definitely saw how sexy he looked in the X men origins! Who is running behind just one position among the top ten sexiest men in the whole world?? answer is Patrick! Born on 1966 Jan 13 in Lewiston was raised in Buckfield. What many people know about him is the fact that he is a race driver. Now how sexy is that! who doesn’t find the people with leather sexy? Dempsey appeared first on Torch Song Triology, and since then his career has been going upwards. Patrick has also been a great icon on the TV shows. Proof? Now who gets to be the sexiest? The one who has bullet marks on his back and has forgotten his name? what? what was I writing? Yeah! Bourne Jason gets to be the sexiest man in the world! I’m sure I don’t have to explain you why he has to be the sexiest. Just grab Bourne series and cup it up with “The Departed” and the Oceans series, and what do you have? THE SEXIEST MAN IN THE WORLD! Born on 8th October 1970 in Boston, Jason has a long list of career successes to boast about. He got his break from the movie “Goodwill hunting”. The movie did sweep the box office and got Jason.. I mean Matt loads of awards and nominations. Then came his hit movies Fallen Angel and Stuck on You which too got him lot of credits. Matt has lots of movie coming this and the next year. All in all the conclusion is that the dark and amnesic characters are more prone to be sexy. I still wonder where did DeCaprio go? and what about Hugh Jackman? Anyways that was our top 1 sexiest man.

This film is one of the more beautiful ones that I have seen of all time. Many of the colors change in order to show how different their relationship is turning out to be, and just right through these colors you can just feel the emotion pouring right out of the screen. There are some scenes in this film that are just mesmerizing of how their filmed. The set-pieces were really good looking and actually did look like it was in the 30’s, and last but not least there is just one amazing scene at Dunkirk in WWII, and basically that whole one scene just completes the whole film.

If there were any problems with this film was that its pace changes countless times and seems a little too all over the place. I also felt that this film was one of those very cliched romantic films based on just the simple words “I love you” to convey a new feeling of love and passionate emotion. Some lines in this film are very predictable, and it just seemed like another love story.

At the Oscars, Atonement won for Best Score, out of their other 6 nominations and to be truly honest I have no clue of how and why. I mean the score is unique but I just found it to be annoying at times mixing in the clicks on the keyboard and heavy breathing to mix in with the score.

The film is brilliantly-told through many different points of views. At some scenes I didn’t quite understand what was happening and then when I found out it actually explained a lot.

Between James McAvoy and Keira Knightley I couldn’t tell if they were going out or not. They really did feel like an actual true couple in this film. McAvoy plays the young servant’s son with such authenticity and anger that he just comes off as a really strong and true character and Keira Knightley gives one of her best performances yet, and shows she can’t be out acted. The really young Saorise Ronan actually does a good job and you can just feel sympathy for her as she doesn’t actually know what’s going on and she does do the best to her ability.

The film really does work with it’s central message. I felt that the ending was very effective and true and shows just how great a story can be, with enough emotional strife to add along. It shows how one little white lie, can change lives forever.

Consensus: Atonement features strong performances, a powerfully emotional story, and some really lovely shots, but ultimately falls too short of greatness, due to little misfires.

Another good day today! My friends are collaborating on paying me a ticket to the Homecoming this november. I’m so excited and utterly grateful! Also, with our Steven Speilberg collection in tech/media class, we finished watching Close Encounters of The Third Kind. The teacher calls it the epiphany of suspense in a major motion picture. He’s right…. perhaps even too right! You’ll have to see for yourselves if you haven’t seen this. Very hip during my mother’s teenage years.

This year is officially the year of the eighteenths…so many of my friends are having wild parties, fancy dress, formal, Hawaiian, you name it, I’ve now got the costume.  So last weekend was no different, I went from one birthday meal (Nandos, which by the way do amazing veggie burgers, seriously, who knew?!) to a birthday party at the local rugby club. We all had a great time; I caught up with some friends I hadn’t spoken to in a while. Not many people were dancing when I got there so I grabbed one of my friends Mams and started the dance craze. That’s the great thing about being in a wheelchair, when you start dancing, people tend to feel that they should join in! It reminds me of a scene from one of my favourite films “Inside I’m Dancing” in which Rory and Michael go to a nightclub and Rory starts to dance. Now, before I get asked, yes, I’m a terrible dancer, I make Ricky Gervais look like Michael Jackson. There I said it, it is something I have to face up to, I’m an awful dancer HOWEVER I was the first person in a wheelchair to pass/take dance GCSE, oh yeah, check out my alloys.

After sweating off my Nandos meal in what can only be described as incoherent, completely sober and slightly deranged raving I went and sat in the bar with my orange juice (I was driving!) I was bent over across the table (sat in my chair) when one of my friends asked me quietly “What’s that?” whilst pointing at my lump on my back, which shows through my clothes like a great big bulge. I asked “What?” and he pointed again so I said “Oh, that’s my lump.”

“Why do you have a lump Ali?” he asked and for some reason I didn’t give him an answer, I distracted myself with another conversation, I was in a party spirit, I didn’t want to talk about how my nerves, bone and fat have mangled into a stupid ball at the bottom of my spine which makes clothes shopping unbearable. I felt bad after, I haven’t spoken to him about it since, it hasn’t come up but I can’t help wandering “why didn’t I just tell him?” and I think I know: It’s the part of my body I can’t cover up, it’s behind me so I pretend it isn’t there, I haven’t accepted it myself yet because I hide it therefore I don’t expect other people to understand it. Feel free to say what you think.

I went clothes shopping today and every time I tried a dress on I turned sideways and saw how my lump looked in it, fat and ugly I thought. I can’t wear pleats because they bunch up when I’m sat down, I can’t where puffy dresses for the same reason, I don’t like to show off my weak legs, I can’t wear drainpipe jeans because of my splints and now I’m obsessed with how my back looks…my back?! Bloomin’ heck, I need a personal shopper now!

P.S. I’ve got a fancy dress party to attend next week, any ideas would be great, shopping for normal clothes is a big enough task, a fancy dress one…? ARGH!

I was watching The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian recently. The scene that got me thinking was when Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Caspian were doing the attack on the Telmarine castle. I realized that me and my closest friends were just like the Pevensies in that scene. The oldest friend, who I’m going to call John, is a guy who is currently serving in the Middle East. John, I would say, is like Peter. He could probably kick butt if he were Peter’s shoes. Next would be me. I would be Susan’s counterpart. I’m the oldest girl, the second oldest overall, and I have a background in martial arts. Then comes Bob. Bob is third in age and would be Edmund’s counterpart. He also has a background in martial arts, albeit a different type of martial art from my background. Last, but not least, would be B-Shawty. She’s the youngest from the four of us, and most like Lucy. I say that because she has absolutely no background in any combat training, martial arts, or self-defense training. Because of that, I would put her in charge of helping the sick and wounded. Anyway, but when it comes to me, John, and Bob, I can also imagine us with different weapons and or having extra weapon skills. That’s assuming that we don’t have any type of guns, tanks, etc. With John, I can imagine him being able to use two swords. With Bob, I can imagine him with a sword, of course, and a bow & arrows. And with me, I imagine myself with a pair of sais and a bo, like how Gabrielle did in Xena: Warrior Princess. Anyway, I just found it interesting as to the parallels between the Pevensies and me and my friends.

Endlich mal ein deutscher Titel, der mir gefällt und in meinen Ohren besser klingt, als das englische Original. Zumal, wenn es sich um eine Komödie handelt, kommen bei den Worten the last station doch irgendwie andere Assoziationen auf. In Ermangelung eines englischen Trailers gibt es hier noch fünf Filmausschnitte aus dem Biopic über Lew Tolstoi in seinen späten Jahren, THE LAST STATION, mit Christopher Plummer und Helen Mirren als das Ehepaar Tolstoi. Aufgrund religiöser Umdenkungsprozesse ihres Gatten, muss Sofya Tolstoi ihre Liebe und die Ehe zunehmend in Frage stellen, während die Beziehung zwischen Tolstois jungem Assistenten Valentin (MyAvoy) und einer seiner religiösen Mitstreiterinnen (Kerry Condon) gerade am aufblühen ist.

Nachdem sich castingtechnisch u.a. Kevin Kline, Evan Rachel Wood, Justin Long und Alexis Bledel zu James McAvoy und Robin Wright Penn gesellt haben, mutet doch Robert Redfords THE CONSPIRATOR recht vielversprechend an. Bei den Dreharbeiten in Savannah scheint jedoch der Regisseur das meiste Interesse der neugierigen Setbesucher auszulösen, wie man in diesen Filmclips sehen kann. Der ehemalige Hollywood-Vorzeige-Beau zeigt jedoch beim Erklimmen der Treppe trotz Jeans und T-Shirt-Outfit sein mittlerweile stattliches Alter. Seine nach siebenjähriger Pause erste Regiearbeit soll die Geschehnisse rund um die Tätergruppe abbilden, die President Lincolns Ermordung im Jahre 1865 plante und vorbereitete.
