James Nachtwey took this photo of a famine victim in Sudan, 1993. I know it’s a little crass to be posting this so close to Thanksgiving and I don’t want to get all self-righteous, but it is important to remember that there are people starving out there while we are all stuffing our faces tomorrow. There are people who don’t even have access to clean water let alone a decent meal.

So last Friday in Journalism class, we watched a 20 minute video of James Nachtwey, a well-known photojournalist whose main focuses are war pictures. Seeing the images and pictures James Nachtwey took throughout his career were very emotional and eye opening. Many of the images were difficult to see because of the graphic nature of the pictures. Nachtwey took pictures that allowed one to see the horrors of war and the struggles of the human race.

See, that’s the thing with photojournalism. It has the ability to stir raw emotion in people, something that print journalism nor radio can do. First of all, humans are visual creatures, so being able to see actual images of an event is important to understand what is happening. Second of all, pictures are more concrete than words. There is something about seeing something first hand with your eyes that just resinates better with people than just read about it or hear about it. Nachtwey uses the example of the tortured Iraqi prisoners. Before the images came out to the public, there were reports of what was going on but it wasn’t until the images came out that there was a public uproar and outcry. When a writer tells a story of the horrors of war, to some degree, you only read what the writer decided to write. On the other hand, seeing a picture of a battlefield, you can see for yourself what is happening.

However, with new technology and computer programs such as PhotoShop, pictures can be doctored and altered from their original state. People in today’s age are more skeptical to believe what they are seeing because it may not always be the truth. People do not like to be deceived.

Despite this, photojournalism will always have an important part in journalism. Until we stop believe what we see with our eyes completely, then this will always be the case.

There are many photographs that touch me deeply, bring on intensely strong emotion and an ocean of tears. It’s not easy to make me cry but talented Photographers, Videographers and the likes break down those walls swiftly.

There are many iconic photographs out there but this is one that I keep seeing pop up in modern art, most recently in the online magazine This is Fly.

Child with Toy Hand Grenade.
Colin Wood, photographed by Diane Arbus in Central Park 1962.
Larger view

This particular image of the boy was captured “in a moment of exasperation”. He looks frustrated beyond belief. Diane moved around the boy whilst he grew impatient with her, claiming she was trying to get the right angle. With his manic and deranged facial expression and his hands crooked like claws he told her to “Take the picture already!”. All of the other photos she took of him he was seen as a happy child in the park.

Many people would recognise the photograph below, showing a starving Sudanese child crawling to a UN food camp a few Kms away, being stalked by a vulture waiting for the child do die. With this image Kevin Carter won the 1994 Pulitzer Prize for feature photography on May 23, 1994. On 27 July 1994, Carter committed suicide due to depression. This photograph effected me more than any other I have seen. In all probability that may never change.

I first saw it after watching War Photographer, a documentary about Photographer James Nachtwey and the broader ideas alike to those involved in war journalism as well as the issues that are commonly covered.

Jon exposed me to this documentary and I became strangely enraptured by this humble man in particular, but other photographers also risking their lives daily to tell the stories that would otherwise be left unseen and unheard.

Everyone I know who has seen this documentary has been stunned and fascinated. New doors were certainly opened up to me and I read and watch for anything in this field now, although it’s something I could never personally do.

There are many more photographs that move me deeply, i’ll post about them over time.

Foi também ganhador de inúmeros prêmios tais como: Common Wealth Award, Martin Luther King Award, Dr. Jean Mayer Global Citizenship Award, Henry Luce Award, Robert Capa Gold Medal (cinco vezes), o World Press Photo Award (duas vezes), Magazine Photographer of the Year (sete vezes), o International Center of Photography Infinity Award (três vezes), o Leica Award (duas vezes), o Bayeaux Award for War Correspondents (duas vezes), o Alfred Eisenstaedt Award, o Canon Photo essayist Award e o W. Eugene Smith Memorial Grant para Humanistic Photography.

The video portion of the class today was form the TED winner, James Nachtwey. He was a document photographer who was a student during the 60’s. At this time there was a lot of debate going on between the war in vietnam. Not to mention the fight during the civil rights movement at the same time. He noted that photography does not only record historical moments like these, but also help to changer history as well.

Nachtwey said that problems can’t be solved until they are identified. I think this is where his career and passion came in. As a photographer he was bringing awareness to the public and to all reaches of the world in order to gain support. He would tent to focus on critical social issues that needed immediate attention. For instance, he was able to get medical aid for the starving people in africa, as well as get support for the many orphaned children from other parts of the world.

I think it was worthy to note his true drive in his career as a photographer. He ultimately is not out to try and sell something, such as a magazine or product. His true intentions are to gain a response from the readers. He puts himself in risky situations in order to get the extreme edge of human experiences. This helps to aim at the viewers instincts, such as the justification between right and wrong.

His wish was to have TED help him tell the stories he wanted. Although James Nachtwey had already done a great job of achieving his goals, he wanted to take it another step further by asking for help from the TED foundation. One wish to change the world.

James Nachtywey is a photographer who focuses on documenting different war conflicts around the world. He started in the 1960’s and grew to love to document worldwide conflicts. A few places he studied where: Northern Ireland, Africa and Iran. In his descriptions of his photographs he really gives powerful metaphors to really explain his photography. I think all of his photographs were violent yet compelling in telling a story of a nation under conflict. Very interesting yet saddening work. I like how he said he uses his anger to clarify his vision. I found that too be very powerful. Overall I think James Nachtwey is a very powerful and interesting photographer who takes really compelling photographs that tell a sad story.

Once in a while, a photo will be so powerful that it will cause us to feel compelled to take action.

The School of Communication at Loyola University Chicago, in partnership with the American Red Cross, is hosting a photography exhibit called Our World at War, Photojournalism beyond the Front Lines.

The photos depict people who have been affected by violence and war in their home countries such as Darfur, Afghanistan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, among others.

The Artists
The photojournalists who captured these photos include:

Franco Pagetti

James Nachtwey

Ron Haviv

Christopher Morris

Antonin Kractochvil

These “five award-winning photojournalists” entered war-torn countries to document the after-effects of war on communities, families and individuals.

The Art
The photographers created their work by “exploring humanitarian issues” around the world.

According to a pamphlet provided by the American Red Cross, the journalists wanted to “document how people who live in countries ravaged by conflict cope with the consequences of death, disease and displacement.”

Some pictures show individuals who are missing limbs; some show individuals dying from diseases; some show those who are hopeful for the future. In each of the subjects’ eyes lies an emotional intensity that only the wickedness of war could have caused.

What the Artists Say
“What I tried to get and tried to touch me through the picture is this kind of interrogation point, and I would be happy if among a thousand people, just one, they would go back in the night and think, ‘Oh, maybe we are making wrong’,” says Franco Pagetti in an interview about the exhibit.

What Loyola Students Say

“It’s sad…I feel like [the exhibit] opens you up to feeling what the people are feeling [in] the pictures. [These pictures] are as close as you can get to [their] feelings,” says George Scaravelli, 22.

“[The pictures] are a wake up call [and] moving at the same time. [They are] beautiful, but sad,” says Richard Carroll, 21.

“They help us appreciate what you have. [In the picture of the] amputee soccer player, he is sad, but is trying to make the best of it,” says Kristen Thometz, 20.

Location, Hours and Fees

Loyola’s School of Communication is located at 51 East Pearson St. in Chicago.

The exhibit hours are

Mon.-Fri 9 a.m. – 7p.m.

Sat 9 a.m. – 5p.m.

The event is free to the public.

One of the most influential living photographers today is American James Nachtwey, who had captured tumultuous events in South Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, Russia, Eastern Europe, and the former Soviet Union. He shot pictures of war, conflict and famine, and images of socio-political issues (pollution, crime and punishment). He won coveted Robert Capa Gold Medal an unprecedented 5 times.

Nachtwey was one of the first photographers to respond to the events of 9/11 because he lives just a few blocks away from the World Trade Center site. His above photo captures the moment when the South Tower collapsed; even in that early moments of War on Terror, Nachtwey saw the comforting presence of a religious icon and also the conflict between the Judeo-Christian West and the Islamic Middle East. The photo was the centrepiece of his photoessay, Shattered.

See his TED talk here.

“I have been a witness, and these pictures are my testimony. The events I have recorded should not be forgotten and must not be repeated.” -James Nachtwey-

To help out achieve the above wish, I’m trying to expose the work done by James Nachtwey. It must take some guts and willpower to keep on going through each an every single war…from Sudan and straight to Rwanda the next day. Deep thoughts will occur when you visit at http://www.jamesnachtwey.com/
