After an extra day off because of the holiday, FMF is back. I’m sunburned, full of food, and ready to bring some Summer vibes to you. What better than to bring some Dancehall Reggae on a Monday morning? This time I have a side I picked up on my tour of DC and Richmond back in March. It’s a great side on Brown Sugar (that looks a lot like Brownstone) straight out of JA, from Johnny Osbourne, “Fraudie”.

Born Errol Osbourne in Kingston, Jamaica (Jonestown to be exact) in 1948, Johnny Osbourne has become well known through out the Jamaican music community as the Godfather of Jamaican Dancehall. Recording for the Wildcats in 1967, the manager Winston Riley would go on to finance a series of recordings at Coxsone Dodd’s Studio One. One full length came out of that session, Come Back Darling. However, upon completion of the record, Osbourne would emigrate to Toronto, Canada to be with his family. He recorded a few records with the Soul/ Reggae group Ishan people. See Light in the Attic’s release: Toronto to Jamaica for an interesting story on Canadian/ Jamaican Reggae relations. This would last until 1979, where he would return to JA. Upon his return to Jamaica he would hook up with Dodd once again and record a few sides, “Forgive Them” and “Jealousy, Heartache And Pain”, and his 79-80 recording sessions made it to a full length, Truth and Rights. His vocal style made him a popular and in demand vocalist in JA, recording for King (back then Prince) Jammy, Bobby Digital (not the RZA), and others. Johnny’s laid back dancehall style, to me is most prevalent in his side “No Ice Cream Sound”, a fave of mine. His song “Buddy Bye”, which he is most well known for not just because of the Sleng Teng Riddim, and was remixed years later by Kenny Dope who laced it with 90’s Hip Hop samples and kept it open so the audience could shout: “Who-a-ooooo”, etc. His vibrant, soulful voice continues to be a force today, and with a catalog of hits, he has earned the name the Godfather of Dancehall.

“Fraudie”, an upbeat side, at first listen, to me sounds like a faster version of “Ring the Alarm”. Obviously not the same riddim, but Osbourne is answering those who called him “Yardie” as opposed to knowing his name. Yardie refers to someone who was a resident or occupant of the government built yards in Trenchtown after Hurricane Charlie. These lower financial areas were built around a central courtyard with a communal cooking area. Gang activity followed, and those key characters to come out of the Tenemant Yards, whether they liked it or not, were called Yardies. Emigration to Britain gave birth to further Yardie culture, which spread violence and the drug trade throughout London. The Version of this tune kills it as well, so keep a look out for it. Props to DJ Birdman for selling me this. Enjoy this slice of Jamaica on the Monday morning (and pay no mind to the slight skip on the outro). Keep Diggin’!

CNN reports on its website and live that a Montego Bay man who has some psychological problems has taken crewmembers of a chartered plane as hostages at  Sagster International Airport in Montego Bay, demanding to be flown to Cuba. CanJet 918 flight from Halifax, Canada, which made a scheduled stop in Montego Bay, Jamaica. There were 182 passengers on board along with the crew.  The passengers have been released.

Christian Gosselin, a passenger on the flight, told his father that the gunman demanded cash from the plane’s occupants. Vaz, the information minister, confirmed the account.

“The guy wanted to have all their money,” said Gosselin’s father, Alphonse. “He (my son) told his girlfriend to take all the money and just take her passport and credit card and put it in her back pocket.”

Gosselin was part of a 25-person wedding party. He and his girlfriend were released by the hostage-taker, and they spoke to his father in New Brunswick, Canada, while waiting for another flight.

“I didn’t ask them too many questions; I was more concerned for their safety,” the father said. “They were a bit shaken up. It was quite an experience.”

Another passenger, Brenda Grenier, called her husband and said the man apparently had sneaked aboard the plane as airport workers were loading bags. Grenier and her daughter were safe, her husband said by phone from his home in Nova Scotia, Canada. 

Jamaican officials are in the process of attempting to negotiate the release of the remaining hostages. According to CNN “Among those negotiating with the man were his father and Jamaican Prime Minister Bruce Golding, who flew in by helicopter. The country’s minister of national security also was at hand.”  

UPDATE:  The crisis is over and the gunman is in custody according to CNN.  The hijacker has been arrested.

I have never seen someone DESTROY competition in any  100m and 200m run… ever.

9.69 seconds for the 100m!!! And he slowed down in the last 20 m to THUMP his chest in celebration as he had a ridiculous lead… who knows what his time would have been if he had run that section hard? 9. 5? 9.4?

And then lightening struck twice: 200m in 19.30 seconds! Just look at the lead he had in the below pic.

Its just unbelievable! The world has almost forgotten poor Phelps after this performance.

Insane Usain

Usain Bolt of Jamaica is 6 ft 5 tall, making him the tallest Olympic Gold sprinter in history… He is almost a freak of nature as guys this tall shouldn’t “bolt” out of the blocks as fast as he does…and take strides as fast as he does…

Michael Johnson says Usain can destroy even the 400m record…and called him “Superman 2″

Even CARL LEWIS with all the dope couldn’t break 100m and 200m world records in his Olympic Gold run.

Ben Johnson with all the steroids could manage just 9.79.

But INSANE USAIN just blew everyone apart.

Hope he wins 5 Golds in next Olympics: 100m, 200m, 100m relay, 400m relay and 400m.

Hell… maybe he should try the long jump too..with his speed, he can cross 9 metres easily in a single leap. After all he is Superman too (pun intended).

Awesomeness can crawl by you and sometimes nibble on your ankle. But the preferred way to administer awesome is via speed shot. Usain Bolt is a showman. He is tall as a moose, but gallops like a gazelle. He is kind of a Jamaican douchebag, so I guess that makes him a jerk. But this Caribbean knows how to spice up the tracks. And this bolt of lightning will electrocute all forms of suck and wuss. He will run circles around awesome and then dip it in gold and wear it around his neck. The bad news, Bolt … you have to give up racing. The good news, Bolt … you get to take up chasing. Our army of awesomeness needs hunters who know how to close a gap. And we’re talking about the store, although that wouldn’t be so bad. Usain, your Ritual Shaving Kit is at the finish line somewhere in Beijing. Just keep running and I’m sure you’ll cross it sooner or later. On your mark, get set, Bolt!

Rachel Manley was born in England to a European mother and a Jamaican father. When she was two and a half years old, her mother was ill, so she was sent to Jamaica to live with grandparents she had never met. In Drumblair: Memories of a Jamaican Childhood ( published by Key Porter Books) she tells the story of her life with her grandparents.

There was nothing spectacular about the old wooden two-storey house set far back from the road. It was not even in a fashionable area, but rather poised precariously on the journey between the city and its ghettos, and the lofty slopes of the suburbs. It has often been described as elegant, but it was too visceral and self-willed a place to be so, for elegance is a product of control.

Drumblair is the house that sustained the Manleys, one of the premier families of Jamaica. Rachel’s grandfather, Norman Manley, was very active in national politics and instrumental in helping Jamaica achieve independence from British rule. He was elected the first Premier of Jamaica. Her grandmother, Edna, was an artist who supported her husband in his endeavors. They were both strong, loving, compassionate people. Rachel’s father, Michael, became active in one of the unions and politics, eventually becoming Prime Minister.

In Drumblair: Memories of a Jamaican Childhood , Rachel Manley gives us an inside peek of what it like to grow up in such a dynamic family. This book is her homage to them. This book won the Governor General’s Literary Award for Non-Fiction (a Canadian book award) in 1997.

          Over 2 Weeks in 3 of the largest cities in Jamaica: Montego Bay, Mandeville and Kingston- We built. We set up. We rode. We spoke about the Gospel and humanity’s need for the Savior. They laughed when we fell. They called our tricks “Stunts.” We had skateboards, BMX, and Motocross- which they went super crazy for.  The arial photo is of the festival early in the afternoon, and the night shot was of 50-70,000 people who showed up for the message and DJ NICHOLAS. The dude is super popular there and Jamaicans know how to dance, sing and praise with no reserve. Luis Palau gave an in depth invitation to come home to Jesus if you’ve strayed into the world like the prodigal son. The artist Prodigal Son was there too, and he was just as popular as DJ Nicholas.  

REPENTANCE IS THE CURE.
