First of all, love the play on lime/limey. Second, if you know me at all, you know how I feel about London, and Brits is general. (I even know exactly which phone booth this is — Big Ben in the background gives it away.)

Needless to say, this was quite a delight for me. And especially fitting, considering my desktop background:

Goes quite nicely with the Buckingham Palace gates and Jamie Cullum lyrics, no?

Any serendipitous screen shots you want to share, Sparkies? Is anyone as tickled by this as I am? Anyone? Bueller?

Handsome Boy Modeling School was a collaboration between Dan The Automator (producer of Gorillaz, Kool Kieth, Deltron3030…) and Prince Paul (producer of De La Soul, MC Paul Barman…). They made two albums between 1999 and 2006. The name, and a lot of what they did, was centered around parodying and making fun of the upper class. This makes it all the more fitting that they split up in 2006 due to business conflicts.

Both of their albums, So… How’s Your Girl? [1999] and White People [2004], are very eclectic. Here’s an incomplete list of featured artists: De La Soul, Del, Casual, Cat Power, Jack Johnson, Jamie Cullum, RZA, Mars Volta, Pharrel, Kid Koala, Sean Lennon, QBert, Rahzel, Jazzy Jay… the list goes on. So needless to say, these guys are well connected.

The albums are experiments—experiments that went really well. There’s some Rap, some R&B, some Jazz; the Automator and the Prince are definitely not bound by musical genres.

Here are a few favorites from So… How’s Your Girl?:

HBMS — The Truth feat. Roisin & J-Live (stream)

HBMS — The Projects feat. Dave of De La Soul and Del tha Funkee Homosapien (stream)

Here are a few favorites from White People:

HBMS — If It Wasn’t For You feat. De La Soul & Starchild Excalibur (stream)

HBMS — Breakdown remix feat. Jack Johnson (stream)

HBMS — Greatest Mistake feat. John Oates & Jamie Cullum (stream)

“You know it’s been four years since I’ve graduated from the Handsome Boy Modeling School. And i just wanted to say that their $60 course has changed my life. Since my graduation, I’ve traveled to Prague, Milan, Pairs and Buffalo, New York. And I now drive a $50,000 la force automobile with total suede package; with subwoofers and specially designed custom glass rims…” —intro to White People by Father Guido Sarducci

He just recently released his long awaited fifth studio album, called The Pursuit. Each CD contains a couple of cover tunes, from jazz standards to rock greats. He’s covered everyone from Cole Porter to Jimi Hendrix, to more recent acts like Doves, Jeff Buckley and Radiohead.

Jamie’s new CD follows that same tradition, and includes a cover of Rihanna’s “Don’t Stop The Music.” They even released a video for the song.
And if you haven’t heard Rihanna’s original…

I absolutely love Jamie Cullum’s new album, The Pursuit. It’s a refreshing album that raises the bar in the music industry and is a great display of Jamie’s far-reaching jazz talents. He manages to cover Cole Porter, turn a pop dance hit into a suave jazz single and create unique, funky rhythmic beats that have hitherto been unheard of. From beginning to end, the album keeps you on your toes because it’s unpredictable and exciting. I reckon, It’s the gold standard of Jazz music at the moment.

When speaking about this album, Cullum says that the album is based on the fact that we’re all always pursuing something. He says: “Life is one long pursuit”. I spent a long time thinking that statement over, and to be honest, I can’t think of an example that might refute it. We are all, indeed, in pursuit of something. Lovers pursue each other. Children pursue better futures. Politicians pursue votes. And, philanthropists pursue the greater good.

Which made me wonder: is our tendency to pursue something an evolutionary device? A mechanism that keeps us moving forwards and upwards?

The functionalist approach in psychology suggests that emotions are transactional in that they enable us to achieve personally significant goals. The earlier proponents of this theory (Campos, Campos and Barrett) took the conventional view that emotions were simply internal personal experiences to link them with cognition and the outer world. Each emotion is underlined with a cognitive process and an external stimuli. Anger, for example, occurs when obstacles hinder us from pursuing our personal goals. All emotional beings are therefore in the pursuit of their personal goals.

Adler’s individual psychology is based around this concept: we strive to fulfill our potentials due to inevitable feelings of inferiority. He suggests we are wired to work towards ’self-actualization’. We strive to become the best we possibly can and in that sense, we are always pursuing perfection.

So, I guess we should stop kidding ourselves: no one is unselfish and that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Still in shock!

I’ve arrived a couple of hours ago from Covent Garden, where Jamie Culllum has been performing (and busking) for the Crisis Charity. I’ve been following his last tweets to know exactly at what time it was going to be, so at 5 pm I was already there, trying to find the best location to take pictures and videos. I don’t know if I have succeeded or not but anyway, I could speak to him for 5 seconds and ask for an autograph, which is far more than I was expecting.

The show has started with “These are the days” from his 2004 album, Twentysomething followed by this year’s Rihanna’s hit “Don´t stop the music“. To be honest, a much better version than the original and with much more feeling at the same time.

After some other songs from his last album, as “Just one of those things” the concert almost finished with an improvised version of Caravan in the middle of the Piazza, without micro and just his voice and his musicians.

Such an amazing gig for free and such an artist and a best performer I think, as he always plays the piano and sings in live. Great band as well, thank you very much to all you five. I know it’s been a busy day for you after being on TV at 3 pm, so don’t give up and see you next May in concert again.

This year is almost over and an evaluation is almost inevitable. I sat and thought about the things I can evaluate and came to a conclusion that there are so many, I just can’t deal with this boredom I could cause you. I just couldn’t sleep at night if I had done the crime of wasting your time with the evaluation of my life. I mean, really, who cares what’s the best food I’ve eaten this year? Or the best daiquiri I’ve drunk? I wouldn’t. So, I’m just going to do what’s best for all of us and skip that awful part. So, followed by a really loud drumroll… Here are the music “yeah’s” and music “no way’s” of this year.

- “Sleep well” album of the year:
Norah Jones – The Fall. I would call it a “no way” if it wasn’t so plain and modest. It didn’t disturb my good night’s sleep at all, because I just didn’t notice it. So – here goes… an inconspicuous “yeah” for all of you insomniacs out there.

– “Two good singles” album of the year:
You won’t believe me on this one probably, but let’s face it – I Gotta Feeling and Boom Boom Pow were the only two good singles from this year’s Black Eyed Peas album The E.N.D. They were good, okay, they got us all moving and jumping up’n'down, but we all know it’s not enough. If I would rate singles, it would be a definite “yeah”, but for the album there’s a big, fat “noooo way”.

John Mayer - Battle Studies (c) Sony Music

– “Quite boring, but decent” album of the year:

John Mayer – The Battle Studies. And I’m really sorry to say this, John. Continuum is still the best thing you’ve created. You’re still gorgeous, I still love you, but I think the routine has hit the relationship. The good news is – you can still get back on the track. Who Says proves it. Anyhow – this is a “yeah”, despite all.

– “Jump-around-shake-your-arse-like-you-just-don’t-care” album of the year:

Jamie T – Kings & Queens. In comparison with Panic Prevention, this is a downhill, obviously, but it still holds the obvious charm of Jamie T and his own style. There were tracks I loved, there were mundane tracks, there were the weird ones as well. Maybe, as time goes by I will love the tracks I hated at first, as it was with Panic Prevention. A single I just can’t fly by and not mention in this case is Sticks’n'Stones – amazing, full of energy and an obvious success. So yeah, I do give it a “yeah”. And I still want to see him perform live. Preferably Sheila and Northern Line, though.

Jamie T - Kings & Queens (c) Virgin Records

– “It was good, but let’s not take this any further” album of the year:

Susan Boyle – I Dreamed A Dream. Well, this is just sad. Okay, it was great how she rocked Simon’s socks off at Britain’s Got Talent last year, but why, and this is a serious WHY, did she have to record an album, for God’s sake? And yeah, I know everyone has a right for their 15 minutes of fame, but didn’t hers tick out when she performed the third time of the song from Les Miserables? Oh well, but what do I know… Everyone, hurry to get your copy of copies!

– ALBUM OF THE YEAR. As simple as that.

Jamie Cullum – The Pursuit. I am convinced that a lot of people will listen to Jamie Cullum, the young boy (well, not so young anymore as he turned 30 this year) from Essex, in the future the way we listen to Frank Sinatra now. With honor, appreciation and admiration. Despite the critics who are on to Jamie about him “making the jazz pop-ish” I think that we are actually experiencing the birth (yes, and I’m sure he’s only in the early stages) of a legend. The first time I heard The Pursuit, I thought “Okay, not a lot of new stuff, but it’s decent at least. He hasn’t made the world’s best album, but he is still not breaking his own levels of mastery”. Then I heard it again, and again, and again… And I fell in love. I’m still listening to The Pursuit every single day and it still gives me goose pumps. So “yeah”, this is a very loud “YEAH” for fabulous Jamie Cullum.

Jamie Cullum - The Pursuit (c) Universal Music

I’ve got some “yeah’s” to give to Dave Matthews Band for Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King, Amerie for In Love & War, Mika for The Boy Who Knew Too Much, Arctic Monkeys for Humbug, Ida Maria for – Fortress Round My Heart, Royksopp for Junior and Muse for The Resistance. And some definite “no way’s” for Eminem – Relapse and some of the very unfortunate comeback attempts from The Backstreet Boys and Take That (YES, INDEED!)

It’s been a while since the last time we spoke, and to be honest I have way too much information floating around in my brain. At first I was unsure how to properly dispel all of these thoughts, which left me feeling like a wandering rolodex of popular culture. But now I’ve decided to break it all down slowly over the next few posts. Today we’ll venture into the songs that have continually found their way into my head as of late… Grab a seat and try to ignore the dancing elves.

SONGS IN MY HEAD AS OF LATE.. AKA SONGS YOU SHOULD GO LISTEN TO AND ALBUMS YOU SHOULD BUY ASAP, IF YOU HAVEN’T ALREADY:

War of My Life: JOHN MAYER, ALBUM:BATTLE STUDIES

John Mayer is back with another studio effort, and although the reviews have been sort of mixed, I am a fan, if simply because it’s Mayer effortlessly doing what he does best: Playing crisp and catchy songs that still hold meaning, all the while flirting with the notion that he could easily turn his musical chops on and show you why he’s respected by musicians near and far. Listening to Mayer is like watching a great athlete in his/her prime, He knows he’s good and he revels in making the difficult look surprisingly routine.

Don’t Stop The Music: JAMIE CULLUM, THE PURSUIT

If you’ve never heard of Jamie Cullum then you probably cite Miley Cyrus* and Yung Berg** as your “musical influences”. Dude has been on hiatus for some time now, but he’s back with another album and trust me it’s been worth the wait. Get your jazz up.

Awakened, IAN MCINTOSH, AWAKENED

I love this guy, think epic stadium pop – rock/worship music and that’s basically what you’ve got with Ian Mcintosh. Why does every one of his songs make me want to climb Mount Everest simply to think and reflect? He’s one of the budding artists coming out of Bethel Church in Redding, California… Truly music that matters.

Rejoicing, IAN MCINTOSH, AWAKENED

*I must admit that “Party in the USA” is an extremely catchy song.

** Yung Berg I got nothing… sorry…

“After years of expensive education, a car full of books and anticipation, I’m an expert on Shakespeare and that’s a hell of a lot, but the world don’t need scholars as much as I thought”. Jamie Cullum.

He may not be the world’s greatest singer but he does make a good point. Jamie Cullum released his Twentysomething in October 2003. Three years later in 2006, with the the last few A-Level Hamlet quotations slipping from my mind, I made the terrifying, exciting journey to University. Even then Cullum’s lyrics rang true, so much so that they even made it on to your writer’s Facebook page. At best, I thought, the arts provide ’soft skills’, giving their students the ability to do things like read and, if they’re really good, write. At worst, they leave their students unqualified for anything practical, condemning them to a lifetime of interesting, yet ultimately penniless, academia. But at the time, did it really matter? Of course not! All that I needed to worry about was that golden first. I’ll worry about what next later. Sorted.

Oct 20 2003

Fast forward three years. As it turns out, I’m not an expert on Shakespeare – ask me anything about eighteenth-century medical history though and I reckon I could give you a decent answer. More importantly, however, I’ve shaken Bill Bryson’s welcoming hand, graduated and crucially got that golden first!

But here’s the rub.

That first, that oh so crucial first, that first which dominated three years of my life, well, it doesn’t really, actually, seem to matter that much. While it does provide a proud talking point, for some odd reason, I don’t know why, that first doesn’t provide an automatic ticket into a job.

With exactly (probably) 99% of graduates out of work due to the credit crunch, and with the numbers of graduates rising every year, a first class arts degree does of course help in the elusive quest for a job, but by no means guarantees it. Rather, graduates of the arts are in the somewhat awkward position of being over-qualified for half the jobs out there, but devastatingly under-qualified for the other half. For every job in publishing, for example, there’s a publishing master’s, in journalism – a journalism masters, in library work – a library masters, etc. For everything else, there’s contacts (which, sadly, I don’t have).

A sound career choice, I’m repeatedly told, is Law. Law, like medicine, is a solid ‘profession’, the source of respect in the community and, of course, a healthy, very healthy in fact, bank balance. It is, of course, a wise choice, a dependable choice. However, with a one year conversion course costing c.£9000, followed by a second year legal practice course at the same price, it is a costly option, adding thousands of pounds of debt onto an already hefty graduate loan.

Where, then, does this leave the arts graduate? There are options. Further study is the obvious choice. If you love the subject and are good enough, a masters in your original subject is the first step to a long and satisfying life in academia. The other option? Further study. Convert to something practical. Whether that be that law, journalism, publishing, teaching or anything else that takes your fancy, your original degree alone will, most likely, not result in the job of your dreams.

This is not to say that I regret studying History. How else could I have learnt the intricacies of late-medieval German Humanism, or early-modern medical quackery, or … ? During my three years of study, I matured, gaining a greater understanding of society and why things are as they are: by no means, was it a waste of time. All I say is think about ‘what next’ now, before you graduate.

Why, then, do I write this embittered article? In my world of self-delusion, it’s a piece of altruism, lending my experience to generations of future students. In reality, it’s for my benefit – a CV builder. That’s all. Another notch on the bedpost.

01. Just One Of Those Things (C. Porter)

02. I’m All Over It

03. Wheels

04. If I Ruled The World

05. You And Me Are Gone

06. Don’t Stop The Music (Rihanna)

07. Love Ain’t Gonna Let You Down

08. Mixtape

09. I Think I Love

10. We Run Things

11. Not While I’m Around

12. Music Is Through

A primeira parte, as musicas tristes, inclui as faixas If I Ruled The World, Love Ain’t Gonna Let You Down, I Think I Love e Not While I’m Around, sendo que dessas, a melhor para mim é a Not While I’m Around porque é a unica que não fica ao ponto depressivo e tem uma letra muito boa. Já a segunda parte de musicas temos I’m All Over It, Wheels, You And Me Are Gone, Mixtape, We Run Things e Music Is Through. É realmente estranho ouvir We Run Things perto de musicas como Old Devil Moon do CD Twentysomething. Dentro dessas, Music Is Through fica como melhor disparado.

Pourtant, I’m All Over It était un single extrêmement prometteur.
