Story: Bad.
Characters: Good.
Dialog: Indifferent.
Pacing: Great.
Cinematography: Indifferent.
Special effects/design: Good.
Acting: Bad.
Music: Indifferent.
Subjective Rating: 7/10 (Good). There are some nice explosions in this set, but some of the excuses for making them are getting silly. “Can you surf a wave caused by dynamite?” Who cares?
Objective Rating: 2.5/4 (Okay).

For anyone not up on their Star Trek the Gorn are a race the Federation first encounter in the TOS episode “Arena”. Kirk Fights the Gorn captain on a planet and eventually kills him with a CANNON  he made from a bamboo tube and the raw ingredients for gun powder, yes very smart we can be when confronted by an angry actor in a lizard suit. I am going to be 100% honest: I’ve been working on this for over three hours now, and I hate every topic I’ve attempted. 2003 was incredibly uninteresting, especially considering that I am deliberately choosing to never include any of the poor decisions made by the Bush Administration.

At this point, I am so pissed off and frustrated that I am going to phone this in.

MythBusters is an entirely  superb television show that premiered on The Discovery Channel in 2003. I don’t want to undermine the work of Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman. They’re seriously smart men and their understanding of physics and science in general is nothing short of flabbergasting to me. On top of being huge science nerds, they also manage to be actually funny and possess a really uncanny ability to make even the mundane aspects of what they do enjoyable to watch. They deserve more credit than this is going to give them.

MythBusters explores the validity of internet rumors, urban legends and other popular beliefs, usually regarding ways in which things can explode or humans can die. Often this is done through elaborate experiments involving vehicles, water, explosives and fancy machinery that I am not allowed to use.

Basically, thanks to Adam and Jamie, and the regularity with which The Discovery Channel re-runs the show, I now have a great understanding of how difficult it really would be to blow myself up. (Or, in some situations, how easy it might be). The show thrives because the majority of us (the western world) are scared shitless regarding how we’re going to die, and we want to know if all the fucked up ways we hear are possible are legitimate.

Generally, the show tells me, the answer is no. A shark probably won’t kill me even if it tries, and I won’t get sucked into a whirlpool and die. In case I was worried that I’d die and no one would know about it, Mythbusters has informed me that even if my car becomes sandwiched between two tractor trailer trucks that collide head on, it will still be possible to see that i was involved in the accident.

Basically, MythBusters is an interesting show to watch. It’s good for killing time in a moderately intelligent way, and I used to enjoy viewing it between classes when I lived on campus.

If only it was that easy.  The WSJ has a profile of the long strange path Jamie Hyneman took to get where he is now as the host of his popular show “MythBusters.”

What’s the marketing connection here?  There isn’t one. This is an entrepreneurial post. Jamie literally went to the library and researched careers that would allow him to do things that interested him.  Not all jobs make you happy and allow you to do things that you find incredibly interesting. But if you find one that does, that’s pretty cool.

Some of the better episodes. They don’t all feature major explosions as the title implies, but there are quite a few good ones. Includes the exploding cement truck episode (which was also edited into a special which is on an earlier “Collection”), and the water heater rocket episode, both of which are pretty crazy.

Last weekend, during the Montreal Fringe Festival, I spent a lot of time downtown around St. Lawrence, seeing the sights and people-watching between shows. And one such day, I was standing outside the metro looking at the Bixi bikes when I noticed that the man standing there looked uncannily like Adam Savage of the Mythbusters. Normally I would have dismissed it, but even as he and his wife rode off, I couldn’t deny that it was a freaky resemblance if it wasn’t him.

So you can imagine my surprise and disappointment (I didn’t say anything to him!) when I checked his Twitter and discovered that he was not only in Montreal but had indeed been right there. Naturally, as a big fan of Mythbusters, I felt like an idiot and wished I had gone up and at least said ‘hello’. But fortunately, it seems as though I have not missed my only chance at seeing Adam Savage and the gang, because there’s some great news from from Pop Culture Zoo. . .

It’s safe to say that one of the most anticipated panels at Comic-Con is the Mythbusters appearance on Saturday night. They packed out one of the large rooms last year, so queue up early for their July 25th panel, which starts at 7:15. This year you can look forward to not only seeing Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage, but also Tory Belleci and Grant Imahara. All four guys will be sharing behind the scenes stories, give some sneak peeks of upcoming myths and answer your questions. On hand to moderate the panel will be astronomer and Discover magazine blogger Phil Plait. If you’ve ever read his blog Bad Astronomy then you know he’s a perfect fit to join in on with the guys.

Mythbusters airs Wednesdays at 9:00PM on Discovery Channel.

The Mythbusters Comic-Con panel is July 25 at 7:15-8:15 PM, Room 6BCF. See you there!

I have been proven right by a poor mistreated camera man and I am so glad because I felt like a judgmental asshole. Not anymore, buddy, not anymore!

#18: Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman from MythBusters

Aside from the fact that this show is super sweet (they blow up stuff, crash stuff, destroy stuff etc.. ALL IN THE NAME OF SCIENCE!  lol, well, only sometimes), I just LOVE Adam and Jamie!  They bring the show from an 80% to 110%.  Despite the fact that Jamie is laid back and, imo, the more passive one, he is my absolute fave.  I just find it funny that his face has like 2 expressions even if they are shooting a rocket at a car (actually, maybe 3 on a REALLY good day).  I’ll admit, if I saw a man like that walking down the street, I would probably run in the opposite direction (is the mustache not reminiscent of a pervy old man?).  If I had their skill set, this would be the best job in the entire world.  Just think about how fun it would be!

Do I love Grant Imahara too?  Why yes.. yes, I d0.

I saw they will be doing an episode on pykrete which I’m very interested in because I want to make my own island on international waters. I’ll discuss the island on a different post.

Anyways, that got me thinking if they featured polyphasic sleep on MythBusters. I did a little research, and to my knowledge, polyphasic sleep hasn’t been featured yet.

I no longer use MySpace or Twitter, so I’m hoping some of you polyphasic experimenters who do you use these services could put in a good word about polyphasic sleep to the cast.

If you’re going to contact the cast, please contact each person just once about polyphasic sleep and using one form of contact. I don’t want them to feel so overwhelmed with requests that they end up hating the topic polyphasic sleep.

Also, don’t forget to watch the new season which premieres today! I don’t watch too many TV shows, but I always make time for MythBusters.

These are episodes that weren’t good enough to make the cut for the first collection, so they’re not quite as good (and there are notably fewer fireballs and explosions). Also, three of the episodes are pilots, which are of particularly worse quality than the rest of the show. Still fun, though.
