Alright, I have a pop culture complaint. I am sick of actresses pretending they are singers. And models and singers trying to be actresses. And actresses and singers working as models. I’m all for ambition, but this is getting ridiculous. Wait, let me narrow this down a little: I’m especially sick of bad singing actresses pretending they are singers worth listening to. I mean, I know they’re famous, but did no one bother to tell them they can’t sing worth crap?

Look, pot-kettle over here. I’m a totally crap singer. But I have like 1000 people letting me know this every day. My sisters, my friends, even my mom tells me that whenever I sing they want to stab me in the throat. Umm…which is why I’m not trying to release a pop album.

So I’m here to reality-check a few actresses turned singers. Join me while I rank these pop star wannabes, from “maybe if every good singer died I would consider thinking about listening to this” to “listening to this makes my ears want to vomit.”

#5: Not So Bad: Zooey Deschanel

Zooey’s voice is kind of hard to judge, because she has this whimsical Joanna Newsom meets Regina Spektor thing going on, which works well with the kind of folksy music she makes. But I still can’t say that I like her voice, or that I objectively think it’s good. She’s really only in spot five because this is the cutest music video EVER MADE.

#4: It Could Be Worse: Leighton Meester

I love Gossip Girl (obvs). But finding out that Leighton is putting out an album is actually what prompted me to make this post. I mean, seriously Blair? An album? You are a super cute little actress; let’s stick to what you know. Regardless, this song isn’t so bad. And partenering with Robin Thicke was a very smart idea. If you like hipster-pop (is that an oxymoron?), you’ll probably like this song.

#3: It Just Got Worse: Lindsay Lohan

Oh Lindsay. Is there anyone more tragic? This song is just the icing on the cake. It’s a Pink-style tribute to her deadbeat dad. Except unlike Pink, Lindsay can’t sing. This is all pretty much cookie-cutter crap.

#2: I Would Rather Die Than Keep Listening to This: Scarlett Johansson

Bleh. Look, it’s no secret that I think Scarlett Johansson is a stupid skank (and it has NOTHING to do with the fact that she stole Ryan Reynolds from me). But I tried to be objective here, I really did. Girl can’t sing. And she does this pretend singy/talky thing. It’s horrible. Spare yourself and don’t even listen to this clip.

#1: Does Anyone Have a Rusty Nail to Drive Through My Eardrums: Jamie Lynn Sigler

Ok, I had a long mental debate about this. What’s worse, not having the ability to sing, or being packaged in such a totally crap way? The packaging actually won out, because I suspect that Sigler can sing better than Scar-Jo. But Scar does work with some pretty amazing singer/songwriters and her music is more tasteful. Poor Sigler’s song has a bass that should have been retired in the 80’s. This is just a bad song, and honestly, her singing might be better than talky-Jo up there, but it’s still not what I’d call “good.”

Sorry to burst your bubbles ladies, but it’s time to hang up those bedazzled microphones. Look, it’s not like you don’t all have successful careers already (expect maybe you Lindsey, though I loved you in Mean Girls). So why are you insisting on pretending you’re Cindy Lauper? Give it up. Go win some Oscars or something.

Wrapping Up Entourage, Season 6

The Husband:

No matter what your thoughts are on most of Entourage’s sixth season, and oh man do I know a lot of people who were threatening to give up on the show this year, I think it ended on a very clear, concise note of an overarching theme that just took too long to get started. No matter what the flaws, the constant deviation away from the life of central character Vinnie Chase and his movie star woes, one remarkably poor casting decision, it wrapped up nicely, and season six came to be about the pros and cons of being impulsive. Everybody except Vince — who pretty much had no arc thanks to him already having a job to go to at the end of the season, shooting Frank Darabont’s Ferrari biopic — completely redefined their lives over the course of what seemed like a very short season, and while it couldn’t get to the heights of some of Entourage’s best arcs, a lackluster season of this show is still an effortlessly watchable endeavor.

This was the year that we really got into the lives of “the guys,” and for better or worse, I’m glad it was able to dive so deeply. Eric, failing to get his management company off of the ground, takes a job at a bigger firm run by George Segal, gets a sweet-ass receptionist played by Brokeback Mountain’s Kate Mara (who will definitely present some major opposition to E’s happiness next season) and already establishes himself as a dominate force against douchey Scott Caan. But his love life has become lazy, and his multi-episode back-and-forth with Alexis Dziena didn’t seem to amount to anything other than obnoxious scenes that went nowhere. And yes, Dziena sucked the life out of any scene in which she appeared, even though I can’t remember having a problem with her acting in the past in work such as Invasion and Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist. But she was terribly miscast here, and her presence was only validated when E finished off the season declaring his love for Emmanuelle Chriqui’s Sloan and finally getting engaged. It took a long time to get going, but I’m fine with E’s story overall. His impulsiveness threatened to destroy two of his relationships, but it ended up working in his favor.

Turtle, meanwhile, got the best arc of the season, or at least the most sincere, in exploring his relationship with Jamie-Lynn Sigler after their canoodling last season. For the first time in a while, their relationship seemed to be built with a major dose of reality, and their problems — her jealousy, his wandering eye while studying business at UCLA, the long-distance dating problem that is part of the world of a wanted film and television actor — didn’t feel like the frat raunch fest mode that this show has a tendency to slip into. And upon their final break-up, Turtle’s impulsive decision to hop aboard a plane headed for New Zealand turned into humiliation, and here’s hoping that between this and his education, he can mature further into adulthood.

Drama’s story was the one I dreaded the most this season, because honestly I tend to roll my eyes at nearly everything he does nowadays. I’ve been sick of his shitty decision-making for seasons now, and his comic relief persona hasn’t rubbed me the right way the entire time. It’s one thing for the world to work against you, but it’s another to be the sole cause of all of your problems, whether you were an asshole in the past or an asshole in the present. His impulsive decision, based entirely around the word of somebody who could have easily fucked up his career just for kicks, to drop out of Five Towns (after his physical confrontation with that douche from Eli Stone, of course) only to see his Melrose Place audition nearly cause him a heart attack (no thanks to you, Dean Cain), was going to be the latest straw of self-destructive behavior. But for the most part, this show doesn’t like to keep its characters in hell, and while Drama suffered so much this season that he nearly quit acting, his MP audition got “the network” interested in creating a star vehicle just for him. The soul-searching came too late to really save the arc, but it’s appreciated nonetheless.

And, of course, we have the saga of Ari versus Lloyd, whose pairing finally implodes when Ari so terribly tortures his assistant that Lloyd has no choice but to up and quit, moving on over to Malcolm McDowell’s company (and Ari’s former employer). It had been a long time coming, and the only way to break what was starting to become a tedious plot device (Lloyd does something good, Ari berates him, repeat) blossomed into something bigger and better. This led to Ari making some majorly ill-advised impulsive decisions when offered the chance to buy out McDowell and merge their companies, but his final decision to give in to a few ego-bruising demands made it all worthwhile. It’s still a bitch that Ari would even consider using his wife’s television money to make the deal, and that it was originally all for spite, and maybe you shouldn’t go around shooting paintballs at your new employees to indicate that the merger equals them losing their jobs, it was an emotional change for Ari nevertheless. It was also a considerably better story than last year’s moral quandary over whether or not he should have become a studio head.

No one likes you right now.

Yes, some of the episodes didn’t add up, and the stalker mini-story fit into what Ebert would call the Idiot Plot where everything could have easily been solved had everybody not been a complete idiot. I don’t think I hate the golf episode as much as, say, my sister does, but the fact that I barely remember it doesn’t speak volumes for its quality either. It’s a pain in the ass to have Vinnie become a non-character on his own goddamn show, though, and Entourage always works better when he’s struggling for work, but it’s not like I hated anything he was doing.

But admit it, you really liked the episode where Zac Efron and Frank Darabont make some surprising (fake) revelations about themselves, the Aaron-Sorkin-visiting-Gary-Cole-in-jail episode was a better episode than it had any right to be, and Matt Damon outright stole the season finale.

With the show’s evolution comes the fact that we can’t simply see the same stories over and over again, and while showrunner Doug Ellin (who I didn’t realize played the asshole TV director until about an hour ago) doesn’t always know how to structure an episode as well as, say, James L. Brooks could, and he still has a bit of an emotional disconnect from his characters at the oddest times, he’s realized this fact. The stories may not be working at a 100% success fate, but in this day and age, I’ll settle for 75%. Besides, do you remember the first season, where nothing happened? That’s how you should weigh all seasons of Entourage, because it’s not the plot that matters, but the characters. Disagree if you wish, but I always look forward to another summer and another season.

But goddamn it, I wish they would have showed us at least one scene from Martin Scorsese’s Gatsby. We can all agree on that.

I’m not going to do a long rundown of the Best and Worst Dressed at the Emmy’s. Everyone has seen, everyone has heard, and basically I was bored with the whole thing. No one blew me away. I cannot believe how many celebrities dressed so matronly! Lots of ugly hairstyles as well. Don’t they understand that its not just the dress and accessories, the hair and make up are equally as important to the overall look? I swear they’re dressing themselves without a mirror. Some don’t want to look like they tried so hard to be beautiful and you were very successful at not trying so hard…a big hot mess. Oh well….maybe next year.

I really liked Jamie Lynn Sigler in her gold mesh Donna Karan. Her hair was perfect and her make up incredible. Debra Messing also, chic, glam and polished from head to toe.

The chick ( I can’t remember and am not going to search her name, sorry) in the white Versace corset dress, a little futuristic but pretty cool.

The cute guy from Mad Men, Jon Hamm, he was worth mentioning but any man in a real tux with bow tie rocks my socks. Rocka rocka.

I may add to this, but at this point, I’m kinda over it.

2009 Primetime Emmy Awards- Arrivals

Yesterday evening the stars came out to the 61st Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, and while I was looking forward to the glitz and the glam I was sure would take place, I was a tad disappointed. They brought it, but they didn’t bring it all the way home:

The self styled Blake Lively stunned in a sexy red Versace dress, with a plunging neckline and open back. She completed the look with Christian Louboutin shoes and Lorraine Schwartz jewels. Blake has stated time & time again that she doesn’t have a stylist, and while she usually misses, leading me to write letters to her fan club begging her to get one, she brought it on this one. HIT

Seal played it safe in a Costume National suit, as usual, letting his wife Heidi Klum own the spotlight in a belly hugging Marchesa dress, Christian Louboutin shoes and Lorraine Schwartz jewels. Heidi is my personal red carpet favorite, and her choosing to do a body hugging dress as opposed to the usual maternity dress that covers the belly, was a HIT!

Kim Kardashian and a very pregnant Kourtney Kardashian hit the carpet together, both with completely different looks. Kim rocked an asymmetrical white Ina Soltani dress, Gucci shoes, Swarovski clutch and Siera earrings. Kourtney rocked an extremely boring midnight blue BCBG dress, Christian Louboutin shoes, and Super Gem jewels. Kim gets a HIT, but for the lack of glam on Kourtney’s part, she gets a MISS.

Our favorite red head Debra Messing did it again, rocking red with the red hair. While the controversial Rachel Zoe is usually her go to stylist, Debra opted to go to Michael Kors to dress her for this event. I’m not a fan of this look, but it wasn’t totally wrong. HIT

Drew Barrymore was one of the few folks the upped the glamour ante! She stunned in this nude Monique Lhuillier gown, Casadei shoes, Raven Kauffman “Drew” clutch and Anna Hu jewels. Love the look, (surprisingly) love the nude color on her, the full skirt with beaded trim, the pulled back hair, and the make-up. HIT

Gossip Girl star Leighton Meester brought the future to old Hollywood with this look. The layered white Bottega Veneta dress with knotted shoulders, Roger Vivier shoes, and Cathy Naterman jewels. Love the look! HIT

Hayden Panettiere was one of my best dressed picks of the night! Just stunning in this J. Mendel dress, Bally shoes, Judith Leiber cluth, and Fred Leighton jewels. The hair, the make-up, the red lips and dress mixed with gold jewelry, I mean, it’s perfect! HIT

Vanessa Williams was boring and simple in this blue Rafael Cennamo dress. *yawn*. She’s still a stunner though, gorgeous woman! As for the look, MISS.

Olivia Wilde is another one of my red carpet faves. She wore a Marchesa dress (again!) and clutch, Jimmy Choo shoes, and Kwiat jewels. I actually love the look on her. HIT

WTF? Victoria Rowell, this isn’t okay. It’s not. MISS

Christina Applegate was indeed one of my favorite looks of the night. She looked gorgeous in this silk blue Basil Soda dress, topped off with Lorraine Schwartz jewels. Love it! HIT

The queen of simplicity, Tina Fey, rocked a very simple black Gucci dress and shoes, and Fred Leighton jewels. I didn’t expect any more glam from this Emmy vet, and since it’s not over the top horrible, she gets a HIT.

Grey’s Anatomy star Sandra Oh looked simply lovely in this gold Donna Karan dress with rope belt, Jimmy Choo shoes, and Tacori & David Yurman jewels. The fit was just right, and the dress color against her skin and under the LA sun topped it off. HIT

Jennifer Love Hewitt is always extremely boring on the red carpet to me. She hit the Emmy’s in this strapless yellow Max Azria number. This isn’t prom, Jen! She pulled this last year. MISS

Jamie Lynn Sigler was one of my picks for the night. This golden Donna Karan number looks like something J. Lo would wear, doesn’t it? Good look on her, and love how she accessorized the look! HIT

International singing artist, Shakira, will perform and Salma Hayek, Oscar de la Hoya and the late Ricardo Montalban will be honored on “The 2009 ALMA Awards,” to be telecast Friday, September 18 on ABC. Alright so I was looking on yahoo when I found this interview with Jamie Lynn Sigler . Basically she is on the show Entourage where she plays the girlfriend of the character Turtle. The reporter asks Jamie Lynn if infact hot girls really liked fat guys…Well little did he know that the actor who plays Turtle (Jerry Ferrara) is actually her boyfriend in real life. The reporter just continues to put his foot in his mouth until he finds out the reality of the situation.

This is one of the funniest things I have ever seen you really must check it out lol!

E for Entourage

Every Sunday my heart pitapats for Entourage. Ever since its creation in 2004, I’ve been an avid fan and this season is keeping the momentum with lots of changes for our boys. Personally I’m loving the growth with the characters. Loved the old Sloan with Eric; she was a beautiful, doting girlfriend…let’s face it, she was kinda boring! The remixed version of Sloan is more bossier than Kelis and taking our red-headed boy for a whole new set of mind-trips. Got him forgetting his new gal-pal’s name.

Turtle is growing up and is heading to college, bravo! Let me not forget to add that he’s dating Jamie-Lynn Sigler (rumored to be off-screen as well). Johnny Drama is doing what only he could deliver so perfectly; making an asshole so funny he’s cool. His honesty is right on the sarcastic point…you gotta love him. Vince is still the center of the bunch and he too is metamorphosing with getting his license and learning to be alone. Tough one since the show is based on his entourage. Last but definitely NOT the least is Ari. Just thinking of this character brings a smile to my face. His salty remarks adds to the shows appeal and his berating of Llyod makes it fun to visit his office. His honor towards his friend is bringing trouble into his bedroom with Mrs. Ari…wrong dedication if you ask me.

I love the Fall

I noticed today Sun is rising later, which means Fall is approaching. Fall is one of my favorite seasons, cooler weather, leaves changing, my birthday, Halloween, and Thanksgiving. It can’t come soon enough. Some people love the Summer, and worship the Sun. Not I, Give me longer nights, and brisk autumn days.

When I sat down to watch the latest episode of Entourage, I took some notes. Half of them were less than four words long. The other half were about Autumn Reeser. Such is Season Six of Entourage.

To be honest with you, I think it’s a welcome change of pace: the fifth season had me wanting to rant about the show every week, but right now the show is so consistent in its absolute mediocrity that I really don’t have much to add. Any chance of the show really breaking from formula has been put on hold, with Vince’s movie delayed, Eric’s independence floundering, Turtle’s trip to college pretty tame and Drama’s career in the exact same place you’d normally expect it to be.

And I’m happy with all of it, really – sure, I’m still convinced the show is capable of being more than it is, but in its current mode I find it breezy and light, an ideal summer show instead of a frustrating summer disappointment.

There are some, I’m sure, who find the storyline with Gary Cole’s Andrew struggling to remain faithful to his wife after having a fling with a young junior agent a bit too dramatic for the series (especially when it isn’t happening to any of the main characters), but I personally find that it works for a number of reasons. The first is that while the storyline may be a fairly cliched bit of drama, the comedy they’re finding within the scenario is amongst the sharpest the show has done in a while. The pitch session for David Schwimmer, where every agent is offering him roles that are essentially Ross from Friends transplanted into different scenarios, was a nice bit of Hollywood meta-commentary, and Ari’s struggle to deal with Andrew’s incompetence (especially his meeting with Reeser’s character) was a more mature form of Ari’s intimidation tactics.

Yes, the storyline is in some ways a distraction, but Schwimmer’s guest appearance was legitimately hilarious (especially his anger at Ari for Andrew cockblocking him with Reeser), and it’s the kind of storyline that isn’t quite just “dudes hanging out.” It’s a nice balance to the rest of the show right now, which really is just dudes hanging out. Vince spends the episode bedding a waitress, Eric has sex with creepy, child-like Ashley in his office and decides to stop working with clients other than Vince (essentially), Drama spends his time making out with prospective T.V. girlfriends, and Turtle goes clothes shopping. In the world of Entourage, this is what counts as entertainment for the audience, I guess.

There’s elements of some broader storylines here, but the show didn’t feel the need to go insane with anything: Drama’s makeout session could have become a huge embarassment, but instead Drama was just delusional as opposed to an imbecile; Turtle’s clothes shopping could have turned into an embarassment, but instead it’s just Turtle buying new clothes. There’s elements of both storylines that raise questions about these people ever changing, Drama getting a better on screen girlfriend when Turtle lets Sigler take the job and Turtle refusing to allow Sigler to pay for his clothes because Vince gave him a fistful of cash. In both instances, all it’s doing is enabling them, but that appears to be the show’s goal.

And I’m okay with that – no, the show isn’t particularly deep, but as long as its slower periods aren’t falling into sensationalist cliches, and as long as elements of more complex storylines (Eric giving up his chance at independence, for one) are still at least somewhat present the show has a decent foundation to build on. If I’m going to keep watching Entourage, I’d rather it be inoffensive and easy to watch than frustrating in its failures to deliver on its potential. As long as it limits itself, I think the show’s in solid shape.

Cultural Observations

It’s interesting to see an episode so devoted to television, and for that matter a season devoted to it. Between the inner-workings of the pilot process, with Charlie getting dumped off of his own script for being too unlikeable with audiences, and here the look into the television department at Ari’s agency, the show is really making a concerted effort to investigate that side of things.
However, as an offshoot of this, there was some confusion amongst regular viewers on how the television industry works: they were confused as to why Ed Burns (who directed the pilot to Drama’s series) wasn’t the one in the casting session. Of course, TV nuts like myself recognized Timothy Busfeld, a regular actor for Aaron Sorkin and a television director, as the one handling the sessions, and know that for dramas there is a revolving door of directors depending on the show. Burns would have gone back to being executive producers once the show began in earnest.
I’m not sure which was more sad: Vince joining Facebook, or E playing online poker and then thinking it was lunchtime when it was actually only 10am. I will say this much, though: a show about guys being bored can’t go on forever.
