OK so this past weekend, I attended an event at the USC film school. I attend panels, network away, yet constantly get distracted by this guy… I can’t place it, but he looks SO familiar. Something about the eyes?

I see him again and again, and we keep making eye-contact (or so I think it’s eye contact) so before I leave, I just go up to him and say “Heyy…do I know you?” to which he responds, “I was thinking the same thing!” First I ask if he went to SC. Negative. I ask if he was sure. Again, he was sure we didn’t go to school together. He ask me where I worked. I say TV Guide Network. He says that may be why… and asks if I do red carpet interviews. CLICK! We conclude that I must have interviewed him at some carpet. We begin trying to figure out exactly which carpet… and well, call me crazy, but I have a photographic sort of memory, and throw out the Acts of Love Autism event, back in November 2008. ..and was right! That’s when “Hi, I’m Austin”/”Hi I’m Samia” happens.

So after Austin Butler and I discover that we’re long lost friends (sort of?) he introduces me to Sean Covel, who just so happened to a be a speaker on one of panels I attended.  Why is Sean Covel a big deal? He graduated from USC’s film school and well, produced a film that at least 50% of you readers have quoted at some point – “Napoleon Dynamite.”

Uh...freakin idiot!

Anyway, as I talk them, I discover “fun facts” like how Sean, though he’s seen the film a million times, has blocked the lines from his memory, and actually gets the lines from the film wrong when he DOES try to quote them.

Austin was on the Nickelodeon show Zoey 101 (co-starring Britney’s sis, Jamie Lynn Spears,) and in a film called Aliens in the Attic (which he was promoting when we first met last year. has been busy in Canada, shooting a new CW series called “Life UneXpected.” had a week off in LA, and decided to pay a visit to his buddy Sean. They actually know eachother because Sean is engaged to actress Alexa Vega, who’s worked with Austin.

Anyway, as we’re parting, the highlight of the convo happens. Do we say “Nice meeting you?” Not quite. Since we’ve met before, the cliche-carpet-line, “Nice to see you!” seems appropriate. Problem? It’s cliche, it’s stock, it’s…well, long story short, it’s a commonly heard line on the carpet, that both stars and publicists use so they don’t offend someone they have/haven’t met. Me, Sean, and Austin joke/banter about this, and conclude that the next time we cross paths, we’ll use a “Hey You!!” or something to that effect.

Anyway, my friend is getting antsy, so I wrap up convo with the guys and… what do I say? “Nice seeing you again.” :-/

Dina Lohan is doing way too much today! This from Dina about her daughter  Lindsay Lohan being criticized as creative director of the Ungaro fashion label, in the Paris fashion shows this week. Says Dina:

“Leave Lindsay alone. Let her be a real 23-year-old. Let her grow, and let her artistic abilities flourish. Stop judging the Britneys and the Lindsays. They are very creative girls, and that is a gift from a higher power of God.”

Having seen Britney Spears live in concert here in LA and Lohan appearing as a very wise-for-her-age guest judge on Project Runway, with very practical suggestions for budding designers translating their designs to retail sales  and practical garments peeps would buy, (Lindsay was great!), I’d have to agree with Dina, dare I say it!

These girls are very very creative!

That said, Lynne Spears must be cringing in her boots, watching this shizzle go down in LA, on her TV screen in Louisiana! Dina Lohan is a riot as a “show biz parent” today. She’s just as outrageous as Billy Ray  Cyrus talking about Miley’s deleted twitter account. Both parents say their  daughters are God given children with creative gifts to change the world’s destiny.

Show biz parents. Gotta love them. LA’s the Place! You just know that Britney’s probably on the phone right now, with  lil sis, Jamie Lynn Spears.

Jamie Lyn will be seen taking baby Maddie to the local shopping mall to buy her daughter creative coloring books, crayons and art supplies, while Maddie carries the book: Awakening Your Child’s Natural Genius by Thomas Armstrong, Phd in her push chair.

This is too good to miss out on for the Spears as show biz families help each other get ahead by giving each other shout outs.

Blame the  Kardashians for Dina’s outburts today. All show biz families like the Lohans, Spears, Cyrus families need to get more vocal as families to match the Kardashian’s fast Famous Families game. 

Celebrity paternity questions run the whole range from common to complex. But one thing you can be sure of is that they attract a more than their fair share of attention. Don’t be mislead by overblown coverage by the press, asking for a paternity test when there is any doubt has become the norm. Here are 6 celebrity test cases.

Jude Law and Samantha Burke: She says that the baby is his, but rumor has it Jude doesn’t want to meet the child until he’s seen the results of a paternity test. According to a source, “If [Jude] is the father he will meet his obligations to the child. He’s hoping for an early chance to establish that he is genuinely her dad.” Interesting note: Jude allegedly paid for Burke’s antenatal care as a kind gesture—not as admittance to fatherhood.

Keanu Reeves and Who??:  He recently agreed to take a paternity test to clear his name after a Canadian woman claimed he fathered her four kids over a period of many years, in total secrecy, across thousands of miles and who are all adults now. She asked Reeves to take a DNA test and has asked for $150,000 a month in child support, retroactive from 1988, as well as $3 million per month in spousal support. Any guesses as to the outcome of the test?

Eddie Murphy and Melanie Brown: He refused to take a paternity test for months and didn’t contact Scary Spice after she birthed her baby, Angel, in April. In June, the results came back positive. Poor Scary Spice. First she gets the bad nickname and then she screws around with a bad dad!

Mel Gibson and Oksana Grigorieva:  He asked his girlfriend to get a DNA test when the baby is born. The PR machines are all saying that it wasn’t his idea and that his previous offspring encouraged the decision—probably since they’ll be divvying up his fortune. Also rumored is that he was convinced to get the test by some of his ‘closest friends in his church’. Way to go Mel, why take responsibility for the decision when you can point to the kids and your church!

Jamie Lynn Spears and Casey Aldridge: She was pregnant at 16 and her 19-year-old boyfriend requested a paternity test. The relationship was already in trouble when the news came out and apparently, Casey told the family that he didn’t want to be with Jamie Lynn until he was sure he was the baby daddy. Not a lot of trust there apparently. So did he, or anyone he consulted consider that asking for a paternity test isn’t the first step toward restoring a trusting relationship?

Gillian Anderson and Julian Ozanne: The X Files star’s estranged husband Julian Ozanne asked for (but didn’t get, apparently) a paternity test in 2006 after she announced she was having a baby with her boyfriend Mark Griffiths, just three months after their breakup. Anderson gave birth to her second son with Griffiths last year so apparently he’s the real dad! Did Julian want to be a daddy or did he want proof of infidelity?

I’m not sure how I feel about going 3 days without you guys. I opened up my laptop to tap out a quick post and stared at the screen for quite some time. Not because I don’t have anything to tell you. Heavens, no. It’s currently Monday night after a very eventful three day weekend. I have a ton to tell you, I’m just having a hard time organizing my thoughts and getting something put to life.

Let’s just talk about Friday. Baby steps. First, here’s my hair. (This is Molly in her game day gear!)

I got out of work a bit early on Friday. My boss usually does that the day before a holiday, and sometimes he’ll do it randomly when he’s in a good mood. I enjoy those days. So I left about 4:15. Earlier in the day I got a phone call from the hair salon. I had an appointment scheduled with them at 6:00 on Friday evening. They called because they had a cancellation and wanted to know if I could come earlier. It was at that point that I cursed myself for being an adult.

I get frustrated when I realize that adults have to keep far different schedules than kids do. I think this is where this the phrase “Ignorance is Bliss” comes from. I’m happy with my life and my responsibilities until I am reminded that not everyone in the world is the same as me. I love my house until I see someone’s beautiful wood floors. I love what I’ve ordered at a restaurant until I see what someone else has ordered. You get it?

So there I was, having one of those days. Lyndsey got off work at 1. Lauren got off work at 3. This made me angry. I wished I could go. I wished I could be a high school student and hang out with my friends all day. Or a kindergartener and take naps at school. I wanted to be young again. Well, younger.

I wanted to tell the people at the salon that, no, I couldn’t get there any earlier and thanks a lot for rubbing it in. But instead I told them that I would do everything in my power to come a bit earlier but I couldn’t guarantee anything.

Like I said, I got off work about 45 minutes early. So I headed straight to the salon. As it goes, of course they weren’t ready for me. I wasn’t mad. I took that opportunity to sit and catch up on some celebrity gossip, which I never do because I’d so much rather write about myself than read about Octomom. I currently only get my celebrity news from the morning show I listen to or Chelsea Handler. And I realized that I should probably keep it that way.

I opened up a wrinkled copy of OK! magazine and started forming my opinion about Who Wore It Better? and then all of a sudden I over heard two teenaged girls on the couch next to me discussing how exciting it was that they were going to try Tampax Pearl because “they are those fancy tampons with the thick string” or something. I immediately felt inferior to these 15 year old girls because I am cheap and only buy Kroger brand tampons. I felt like telling them that they are all the same and to stop wasting their parents’ money but then they’d probably just call me old and make me cry.

I kept my head down and continued reading my magazine. I turned the page and my jaw dropped. Have celebrities always been this young? Do they just seem young since I’m getting older or is there really a trend of young slutty girls in the media? All I know is that when I turned the page I saw some chick from My Sister’s Keeper in lime green heels that are about 5 years too old for her. It made me sad to see her dressed that way. So I moved to the next picture and saw Miley Cyrus singing at one of her concerts. She was wearing disgustingly short shorts and boots that were gaping open because her tiny pre-teen calves are too thin to fill them out. But the kicker here was that those tiny legs were wrapped around a stripper pole.

(Let me take a second here to vent. Girls, singing while wrapped around a stripper pole makes you trashy. No wonder guys think it’s okay to call girls ’sluts’ and treat them with disrespect. If you don’t respect yourself, why should they??? Also, who is allowing Miley to do this? Don’t yall know that half of her fan base is under the age of 10? Billy Ray, be a father and stop letting your child dance around on a stage in next to nothing. I could go on and on but that’s not the point of this post. Maybe one day I’ll do a post title “What’s Wrong With America.”)

I let out a huge sigh and shook my head at Miley and looked at the next picture. Jamie Lynn Spears carting around her baby. Oh dear.

I decided I was done with that magazine. I couldn’t handle it anymore. The more I read about trash like that, they more I’m tempted to get my tubes tied and refuse to bring an innocent child into this sad world. Instead I turned my attention back to the girls who were giggling over the names of the Bed Head products and discussing how they just must get some product called Manipulator because it was so funny.

I smiled when I realized that my childhood was over. I got out of it without having a desire to dance around a stripper pole in hoochie shorts. I didn’t get pregnant or wear 4 inch stilettos when I was 15. With the vast wisdom I have now (ha) I realize that I’d so much rather work full time and have a house and bills if it means that I don’t have to deal with the crap these girls have to deal with now.

I realized there in that salon, next to two girls who sent approximately 72,927 text messages in the short 10 minutes I saw them, that I very much like being an adult. So I got my hair cut, went out on a dinner date with my husband, and drank a very large margarita.

And the we went home to giggle and watch 17 Again.

Britney, 27, and Jamie Lynn, 18, were snapped playing by the Mandarin Oriental Hotel pool in Miami on Monday with Sean Preston, 3, Jayden James, 2, and Maddie Briann, 1. Grandparents Jamie and Lynne and also enjoyed the day with their grandchildren.

“They both looked to be in pretty good shape,” a witness told Us magazine of Britney and Jamie Lynn.

The family, “sat around the pool for about 20 minutes,” the witness shared. “Then Britney worked on her tan while Jamie Lynn took her daughter and her mom to a cabana on the beach.

“They seemed pretty relaxed. Everyone was smiling,” the witness said.

When the weather became overcast around 2 p.m., the family headed inside for lunch, the witness continued.

Britney’s Circus tour hits Orlando Tuesday night, and Miami on Wednesday.

Here’s a peek at a baby we haven’t seen in quite some time!

Jamie Lynn Spears stepped out with a pajama-clad Maddie Briann, 13 ½ months, on a scorching hot Sunday in Louisiana.

The pair stopped by a gas station to pick up a few items before continuing on their way to Lynne Spears‘ home.

Maddie is Jamie Lynn’s daughter with Casey Aldridge.

Del mismo modo que los hay guapos y feos, altos y bajos, es complicado encontrar el motivo de porqué surgidos del amor del mismo padre y la misma madre, criados en el mismo entorno, con los mismos cuidados y cariños, los hay que triunfan y otros que tienen que vivir acaparados por la fama de sus hermanos. Lo que está claro es que en muchos casos talento y genialidad son factores no incluidos en esa cosa tan caprichosa que información genética que transporta el ADN. Y si no preguntádselo a nuestros siguientes protagonistas, músicos que parecían dotados y que han intentado seguir la misma senda que sus reputados tetes, pero con unos resultados artísticos mucho menores.

Dik y Dave The Edge Evans. Iguales pero diferentes

A finales de la década de los 70 nos encontramos en Dublín con un grupillo de chicos algo rarotes que se autodenominan los Lipton Village. Forman parte de esta curiosa pandilla Paul Hedson y David Evans, aunque uno de los rituales de la cuadrilla es ponerse apodos, y a este par se les conoce como Bono y The Edge respectivamente. Por aquel entonces, estos dos jovenzuelos tocaban en una banda llamada The Hype, en la que también militaba Dik Evans, el hermano mayor de The Edge. El problema con el que se encontraron The Hype es que los tres eran guitarristas, y 18 cuerdas son demasiadas para un grupo de pop rock. La solución fue relativamente sencilla, The Hype acabaron por convertirse en U2, y en el proceso de mutación Dik se incorporó a las filas de Virgin Prunes (una expresión que en el Dublín de aquel entonces se utilizaba como sinónimo de freak), grupo formado también por integrantes del clan Lipton Village. Eso fue en el año 1980, y junto a los Virgin Prunes Dik Evans editó diversos singles y un álbum, If I Die I Die, abandonando la formación en 1984 agobiado por los mecanismos de la industria y por el rumbo musical que estaba tomando el grupo. Pese a que tan solo fueron cuatro años, el legado musical dejado por Dik Evans es sumamente relevante. Los primeros Virgin Prunes son una de las referencias esenciales de la escena afterpunk, y por si esto no fuera suficiente, The Edge, uno de los mejores y más imaginativos guitarristas de la historia (ni con los dedos de las dos manos y los dos pies podemos contar aquellos que le han intentado emular), siempre ha declarado que su mayor influencia rasgando las cuerdas ha sido su hermano Dik.

Leon Hendrix no acaba de verlo claro

Más allá de cierto parecido físico, y de su, para qué engañarnos, afición por los psicotrópicos, en el apartado artístico pocas son las semejanzas entre los hermanos Jimi y Leon Hendrix. Entre las hazañas de este último, una de las más sonadas es la de haberse perdido el funeral de su hermano al estar entre rejas por el robo de unos abrigos de piel. Tal era la fama de granuja de medio pelo que tenía Leon, que cuando su padre Al Hendrix, que controlaba todos los derechos de autor y de imagen de su hermano, falleció en 2003, tan sólo le dejó un disco de oro, pasándole toda la millonada (se calcula que el valor del legado de Jimi Hendrix asciende a más de 80 millones de dólares) a su hermana Janie Hendrix. Pero lo más esperpéntico de toda esta historia se produjo en 2005. Leon despierta una mañana y le explica al mundo que su hermano Jimi se le ha aparecido en un sueño, ¡incluso cuenta que en la visión Jimi estaba rodeado de llamaradas púrpuras!, y le ha pedido que grabe un disco. Fruto de esa alucinación aparece el insufrible Keeper Of The Flame, donde se da buena muestra de que al nacer, todo el talento musical se lo llevó Jimi. La última aventura de Leon ha sido la elaboración del Hendrix Electric Vodka, un brebaje de alta graduación que ha tenido que retirar de las licorerías al haber utilizado ilegalmente la imagen del pobre Jimi.

Chris Jagger. He can't get no satisfaction.

Cuentan quienes le conocen que Chris Jagger es un crápula que vive amargado por el megastrellato de su hermano Mick. Nosotros, como no le conocemos, nos limitaremos a repasar su trayectoria musical, que, eso sí, dista bastante de la popularidad alcanzada por Morritos Jagger al frente de The Rolling Stones. Como artista, Chris no sólo ha intentado probar las mieles del éxito como músico, si no que, polifacético el hombre, también ha intentado pasar a la posteridad como actor, diseñador e incluso periodista musical. De todos modos, su primera intromisión en el mundo del artisteo fue siguiendo los pasos de su hermano. Tenemos que retroceder hasta 1973, año en el que Chris Jagger publica su primer y homónimo disco, al que le siguió Adventures Of Valentine Vox The Ventriloquest. Fue tan escasa la repercusión obtenida con esto trabajos que Chris tardaría 20 años en volver a entrar en un estudio de grabación. Dos décadas en las que primero probó fortuna en el mundo del cine, con un resultado incluso más nefasto que como músico. Más tarde se infiltraría en el negocio del diseño de ropa, donde las cosas, aunque un poco mejor, tampoco le fueron extraordinariamente bien. Y finalmente, como dicen que hacen todos los músicos frustrados, se interesó por la prensa musical, ejerciendo de plumilla para el periódico The Guardian y Rolling Stone. Como lo de juntar palabras tampoco era lo suyo, Chris Jagger regresó a la música en 1993, y desde entonces ahí sigue, sin hacer mucho ruido, al frente de una banda llamada Atcha Acoustic.

Las Knowles. Misma belleza diferente voz.

-Solange Knowles
La verdad es que es tan grande el parecido físico entre las hermanas Knowles, dos pedazo de diosas de ébano, que a veces cuesta distinguir quién es Solange y quién Beyoncé. La gran diferencia seguramente se encuentre en los ceros de sus respectivas cuentas bancarias. A Beyoncé todos la conocéis ya, más anónima resata la carrera de su hermana pequeña Solange. Los primeros pasos en el negocio de la menor de los Knowles fueron a los 15 añitos como corista y bailarina del grupo de su hermana, Destiny’s Child. Tras esta experiencia Solange colaboró en el disco de Lil Romeo y en el debut en solitario de Kelly Rowland, compañera de Benyoncé en Destiny’s Child, “Simply Deep”. Después de especularse con que Solange entrara a formar parte de Destyni’s Child en la gira de reunión de 2004, algo que acabó por no producirse, Solange se centró en su debut discográfico, un disco del que declaró venir trabajando desde que tenía 14 años. Si tenemos en cuenta la lista de productores con los que colaboró, donde nos encontramos con nombres de la talla de, entre otros, The Neptunes, Linda Perry y Timbaland, “Solo Star” debería haber sido todo un éxito, pero, pese a recibir buenas críticas, el álbum apena superó las 100.000 copias vendidas. Un fracaso. Probó suerte en el mundo del cine, se casó, tuvo un hijo, colaboró con otros artistas, y se divorció. Y una vez completado el ciclo vital de una estrella de segunda fila, Solange decidió que había llegado el momento de reprender su carrera musical. El resultado apareció en verano de 2008 y llevó por título Sol-Angel And The Hadley St. Dreams, un disco producido por Cee-Lo Green, el cantante gordito de Gnarls Barkley, que recibió mejores críticas que su álbum de debut. Pero como suele decirse, el público es quien tiene la última palabra, y la segunda obra de Solange vendió tanto o menos que su debut.

¿Cuál de los dos se parece más a su padre?

-Julian Lennon
Más jodido que ser hermano de alguien con más talento que tú, es ser hijo y hermano de alguien con más talento que tú. Ése es el caso de Julian Lennon, hijo de John y hermanastro de Sean, y aun así ha tenido un papel determinante en la historia del rock. Julian fue el fruto del matrimonio entre John Lennon y Cynthia Powell e inspirándose en un dibujo suyo su padre escribió el tema “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds”. Pero ésa no es la única canción en el repertorio de los Beatles en la que Julian tiene algo que ver. Tras la separación de sus padres, abducido por la malísima Yoko Ono John Lennon se despreocupó por completo de la vida de su primogénito, una situación que estremeció a Paul McCartney, quien escribió para Julian el tema “Hey Jude”, una pieza que en su primera versión se titulaba “Hey Jules” (Jules es un diminutivo de Julian). No sabemos si fue gracias esta tonadilla, pero lo cierto es que con el paso de los años Julian acabaría por tener una gran amistad McCartney, llegando a declarar públicamente que el material en solitario del bajista zurdo era mejor que el de su padre. Julian se estrenó discográficamente el año 1984 con el álbum Valotte, disco con el que tuvo un éxito relativo, llegando a colocar dos singles en el Top Ten. Dos años más tarde aparecería The Secret Value Of Daydreaming, obra vilipendiada por la crítica, pero en la que incluía el single “Stick Around” con el que alcanzó el número uno, un hito que ya nunca más repetiría. Y es que a partir de ese momento su carrera musical, que incluye tres discos más, fue cayendo en picado. Se espera que este 2009 aparezca un nuevo álbum suyo.

El hermano de Macca también tuvo su momento de gloria.

Lo cierto es que no hay ningún ilustre linaje musical que lleve por apellido McGear, pero es que en la partida de nacimiento de nuestro protagonista, el nombre que aparece es el de Peter Michael McCartney. Empezamos a atar cabos. Mike McCartney es el hermano menor de Macca, y seguramente el que mayor repercusión haya tenido de todos los hermanitos que aparecen en esta lista, pues aunque en España sea un absoluto desconocido, en su Inglaterra natal llegó a colocar varios singles en la zona alta de las listas de ventas. La trayectoria musical de este joven aprendiz de peluquero se inicia en 1962, justo el año en el que su hermano mayor tuvo su primer gran éxito con los Beatles con “Love Me Do”, cuando forma The Scaffold, un curioso grupo a medio camino entre el pop, la stand-comedy y la poesía. No queriéndose aprovechar del éxito de los Beatles, Mike decide adoptar el nombre artístico de Mike Blank, primero, para definitivamente pasar a apodarse Mike McGear -un vocablo, Mcgear, que en la jerga de Liverpool se utilizaba como sinónimo de fabuloso, lo cual no deja de ser un guiño al grupo de su hermano, conocidos como los Fab Four (los Cuatro Fabulosos)- . Poco tiempo después, The Scaffold firman por el sello Parlophone, con la que inician una carrera discográfica que les llevó a disfrutar de diversos éxitos en el Reino Unido entre los años 1966 y 1974, alcanzando el número uno en 1968 con “Lily The Pink”. Mike también es conocido por su faceta como fotógrafo, siendo suya la imagen que ilustra la portada del disco de su hermano Chaos And Creation In The Backyard, editado en 2005.

Pocas cosas hay que podamos explicaros ya de la carrera de Britney Spears. De reina-del-pop-adolescente-virgen a esquizofrénica-cabeza-rapada-enseña-chochos, y vuelta a renacer de sus cenizas cual ave fénix con la publicación de los discos Blackout y Circus. Casi igual de interesante para los amantes del cotilleo y las noticias de tonalidad amarillenta resulta la vida de la hermanita de Britney, Jamie-Lynn Spears, y es que ambas parecen haber recorrido el mismo camino a lo largo de sus vidas, con la salvedad de que Britney sigue vendiendo discos a carretadas y se pegó el filetazo con Madonna, y Jamie-Lynn, de momento no. Como la mayor, Jamie –Lynn se ha ido fogueando frente al gran público en programas y series de televisión para preadolescentes, siendo el rol de Zoey Brooks, para la serie del canal Nickelodeon Zoey 101 su papel más conocido. En el apartado musical, hasta ahora la carrera de Jamie-Lynn se limitaba a la interpretación de algunos temas para la televisión, pero el mes de marzo pasado anunció la inminente publicación, aunque por el momento no tiene sello discográfico, de su primer disco. Un álbum que por lo que ha anunciado será de música ¡country! ¿Y qué hay de los escándalos? Evidentemente, tratándose de una Spears, Jamie-Lynn también ha tenido su dosis de carnaza para la prensa del corazón. Y es que la hermanita de Britney anunció en 2007 que se había quedado embarazada, teniendo ella 16 añitos y el padre de la criatura, un tal Casey Aldridge al que conoció en la iglesia, 18.

Michael también tuvo un dia esa cabellera.

-Lynda Stipe
Con poco más de 100.000 habitantes, Athens (Georgia) es una de las ciudades que más rostros populares ha aportado a la cultura popular. En Athens nació la actriz Kim Basinger, y de allí también proceden nombres tan ilustres dentro del mundo musical como Danger Mouse, B-52, y de Athens son también todos los integrantes de R.E.M. Puede que Lynda Stipe, la hermana pequeña de Michael Stipe, no sea una de sus hijas más ilustres, mas si comparamos sus logros con los de Michael, pero su granito de arena aportó la chica al crecimiento de la prolífica escena musical de su ciudad a inicios de los años 80. Pese haber formado parte posteriormente de infinidad de grupos, el nombre de Lynda Stipe siempre ira ligado al de los seminales Oh-OK. Por lo que dicen las biografías, Lynda Stipe tocaba el bajo des de pequeñita, aunque no fue hasta que su hermano le pidió que formará un grupo para que hicieran de teloneros de la banda en la que cantaba entonces, que Lynda empezó a tomarse en serio la música. Eso sucedía el año 1981, naciendo así Oh-OK, grupo del que también formaban parte la guitarrista Linda Hopper, que una década más tarde se daría a conocer al frente del grupo de indiepop Magnapop, y el batería David Pierce. Su primera grabación en 1982 fue el single Wow Mini Album, hoy en día una auténtica pieza de coleccionista, para grabar un año más tarde el EP Furthermore What, por aquel entonces con Mathew Sweet, posteriormente uno de los nombres más importantes del power-pop, en sus filas. El grupo se separaría en 1984, y ninguna de las posteriores aventuras musicales de Lynda Stipe alcanzaría la menor repercusión. Lynda, que mantiene una excelente relación con su hermano, ha colaborado en diversas ocasiones con REM. Se la puede ver en el video del tema “The One I Love”, es coautora de la canción “Bandwagon” y realizó coros en “Bang And Blame”.

Un auténtico hermano en la sombra

-Andy Yorke
Suele decirse que son los hermanos pequeños los que, por ir absorbiendo lo que previamente han hecho sus mayores e ir encontrándose con las puertas abiertas, lo tienen más fácil. No sería el caso de Andy Yorke, hermano menor Thom Yorke. Un chico con cierto talento para la música, pero que jamás llegará al grado de genialidad del líder de Radiohead. La primera incursión de Andy en el circo de la música se produjo el año 1994 como cantante y guitarrista del trío de brit pop The Unbelievable Truth, grupo con el que debutó discográficamente el año 1998 con el disco Almost Here. Una obra que recibió halagos de la crítica musical británica, e incluso llegó a situarse en una posición bastante decente en las listas de ventas inglesas, pero que sufrió el mayor de los desprecios por parte de su compañía discográfica por aquel entonces, Virgin, que no apoyó el disco como se merecía. Dos años más tardes La Increíble Verdad volvieron al ruedo con su segunda obra “sorrythankyou”, álbum que editaron a través de la independiente Shifty Disco, pero esta vez el álbum que fue acogido con bastante indiferencia. Desencantados con el mundo de la música, el trío se separa y Andy decide regresar a la universidad para realizar estudios de economía y ¡política rusa! Después de algunos conciertos esporádicos con sus antiguos compañeros, a Andy le volvió a picar el gusanillo del estudio de grabación y en 2008 edita su debut en solitario Simple, 12 temas con momentos bastante interesantes que siguen la línea del pop británico de cariz maduro de luminarias del género como Richard Ashcroft.

Su molinillo eléctrico no es lo mismo.

-Simon Townshend
Tocando la guitarra y llevando ese apellido es imposible no deshacerte de la alargada sombra de tu hermano mayor, el celebérrimo guitarrista de los Who, Pete Townshend. Y eso que Simon lo ha intentado en diversas ocasiones. A inicios de los 80 grabó un par de álbumes en solitario, Sweet Sound (1983) y Moving Targets (1985), discos que pasaron con más pena que gloria por el mercado discográfico. Después de crear su propio sello discográfico, Stir Music, en 1996 Simon, dando por bueno ese refrán que dice si no puedes con ellos únete a ellos, se enroló en las filas de The Who como segundo guitarrista de directo en la gira que la banda británica realizó por Inglaterra y Estados Unidos interpretando íntegramente el álbum Quadrophenia, una de las mayores perlas en su discografía. Un puesto a la sombra de su hermano mayor que ha mantenido desde entonces y que le ha reportado sus mayores éxitos, ya que incluso un periódico norteamericano llegó a decir de él que “es la arma secreta de los actuales Who”. Más allá de su empleo junto a los autores de “My Generation”, en 2005 el menor de los Townshend formó The Casbah Club, grupo en el que también militan Bruce Foxton de The Jam y Mark Brzezicki de Big Country.

I am a chronic list-maker, whether I have to make a difficult decision or not.  Lists help me organize my thoughts and remember important facts and details that I need for later.  However, there are some things that I would rather forget and that’s what this week’s showdown concerns.

Those of us who have little sisters know how annoying they can be (haha, love you Chloe!).  Those of us who are humans who participate in society know how annoying famous little sisters can be.  The most annoying of these are probably Ashlee Simpson (okay, the older sister is just as annoying…if not more so) and Jamie Lynn Spears (well…ditto).  But which one is more of a fame whore?  Which one can even be called a valid human being (j/k…sort of)?

Babies
Ashlee Simpson had a baby (with a really weird name). Ashlee Simpson is a baby.  I feel like if you and your husband both wear skinny jeans and excessively gel/dye your hair, you shouldn’t be having children.  Maybe she should be taking some cues from her sister and get some mom jeans up in there.

Jamie Lynn Spears had a baby.  Wait, she’s legal? Oh…nope!  Anyway, good job on her to take the heat off her crazy-ass big sister by ‘causing a ruckus and getting knocked up all southern style.  That’s dedication.  That’s love.

Point: Ashlee Simpson.  I’m not even sure she remembers she has a baby after all the time she’s been spending screaming at people in clubs and making crappy albums. Also, was anyone talking about her post reconstructive surgery and pre baby? Nope! Nice publicity stunt, Ash!

“Fame”
Ashlee Simpson sang some songs…wait, or did she act in something?  What does she do again?  I forget.  Generally that’s not a good thing if you’re famous and people don’t remember what you’re famous for except for your ability to lip sync, get booed off stages and get nose/chin/total makeover jobs.

Jamie Lynn Spears…does…nothing?  Like, seriously.  What does she do?  I think maybe she sings stuff…and has a Disney TV show.  But who doesn’t these days?

Point: Jamie Lynn Spears. She literally does nothing and all her fame is due to her crazy big sister and her own pregnancy “scandal.”

Family
Ashlee Simpson has a crazy, controlling dad and a seriously misguided older sister (I swear, the buffalo wings thing…).  Ashlee could probably take the prize of being the most well-adjusted and “normal” in that family, considering what she had to deal with while growing up. Although, that might not be saying much…

Jamie Lynn Spears has a crazy older sister (really, really crazy) and a fame-hungry mother.  Considering the level of craziness that Britney Spears operates on, Jamie Lynn seems to have missed that genetic bullet.

Point: Ashlee Simpson. Her sister must have rubbed some of that brainless, fake-talent stuff on to her.

Talent/Career
Ashlee Simpson can’t sing (we all know that) and she can’t act, but apparently she can dance.  She was even admitted into the School of American Ballet.  Too bad she seems to be focusing on the “talents” that she doesn’t actually have, as compared to what she can do relatively well.

Jamie Lynn Spears can act (I guess) on a level that is acceptable for those who perform for the mindless preteens who watch the Disney Channel.  That’s about it.  Oh wait, her reproductive organs seem to be pretty talented…

Point: Jamie Lynn Spears. As much as I hate to admit it, Ashlee Simpson actually had talent at one point. Jamie Lynn Spears just doesn’t.

Celebretard Prize Goes To: Ashlee Simpson. Lack of any remaining talent + big ego + retarded name for baby (Bronx Mowgli??) + 500 other stupid things = Celebretard.  Sorry  Jamie Lynn, you need to be at least half a celebrity to get this prize.

Yay, let’s reward everyone’s bad decisions. Let’s give Bristol Palin and Jamie Lynn Spears their own reality shows, too. Might as well – MTV has a new reality show called 16 & Pregnant premiering June 11.

Amy Winehouse has made a lot of bad decisions over the last few years and she’s killing herself with drugs and alcohol – so let’s see it! Yep, she’s getting a reality show, too.

Jamie Lyn Spears spoke to the Hollywood Insider last night to say that Kevin Federline and Britney have become best friends again. Just friends, nothing more, but good friends. That’s good news for their kids.

Federline is always nice to Brit Brit when she’s earning the big dollars though, just like all of Britney’s family who live in houses she paid for. Britney Spears is a SAINT!

American pop star Britney Spear’s younger sister Jamie Lynn is full of appreciation for her sister and former husband Kevin Federline, as she thinks that they have become “best friends”.

Britney divorced former husband Federline in 2007, and the custody of her two sons Sean Preston, 3, and Jayden James, 2, was given to their father.

Though it has been reported that Federline doesn’t like his kids accompanying Britney on her Circus tour, Jamie Lynn has denied the claims stating that get along like a house on fire.

Jamie further revealed that Kevin and Britney both care for their children, and respect each other’s love for their children.

“Kevin has been great, as always. He and Britney have become best friends. She knows how much he cares about the boys and he knows the same is true of her,” Contactmusic quoted Jamie Lynn as saying.

If you haven’t heard yet, MTV’s coming out with a new reality show called 16 & Pregnant. For the less astute readers, it’s about a pregnant 16yo. Basically MTV is taking Engaged and Underage to a whole new level… and we’re going to eat it up. Let’s face it, we all love trainwrecks. For me, seeing teenagers fail at life is like putting a kid in a candy store.

When it comes to blogging with colleagues I found myself in a place of extraordinary hesitancy. Writing is somewhat of a passion of mine. I enjoyed writing in college, analyzing characters and often going on long tangents thinking I was entertaining my professors, while I was most likely only entertaining myself. I loved sitting at my computer debating how to word things just perfectly so as to sound like the ultimate academic, witty, yet decisive in my analysis of characters and their motives. I can still envision myself sitting on a stoop outside puffing away at my cigarette, convincing myself that it helped me think clearly. I debate having one right now for the same purpose. But it seems that the confidence escapes me when I think of writing for an audience other than my professors, and colleagues no less. The task seems daunting.
