year.

The organizer has given a heritage touch to all parts of the ground. The entrance resembles Khambhaliya Gate Of Jamnagar, dancing area has structures like the entrance gates of the palace and seating arrangements are truly royal!

The background of the stage is decorated like Darbargadh of Jamnagar. The entire theme has been planned by committee members of the club.

“More than 300 photographs were taken of various historical places in the city by Sameer Shah at different times,” said Raju Sheth, president of the club. These were used to create the heritage look.

“We have tried to combine our ancient culture with modern Navratri,” said Parag Shah, convener of the Navratri Mahotsav at the club. More than 1,000 families play raas garba at the 74-year-old club. It has been organizing the festival for the last 28 years.

It’s an ideal base for exploring the surrounding coastline that stretches to Dwarka, where rare birds flock to ankle-deep islands, and fine beaches are empty all year-round.

Jamnagar is best known for having India’s only Ayurvedic university, where you can learn the techniques of ancient medicine and yoga, and a temple that’s hosted nonstop chanting since 1964 (it’s in the Guinness Book of Records; see opposite).

Prior to Independence, the town was ruled by the Jadeja Rajputs. It’s built around appealing Ranmal Lake, which has a small palace at its centre, and huge weekend crowds around its edge.

I have been officially tagged by A Thoughtful train… and I have seen this tag at a lot of places… here we go…

Four places I have lived:

1. Andheri (W), Mumbai – My birth and my first 5 years of life… Dont remember a lot from that phase though…

2. Jamnagar – A lovely time… I was a very intelligent student then… I studied in a boys school… perhaps thats why…

3. Bharuch – came here in 5th standard, first time in a co-ed… the teacher made me sit next to a girl and my studies went for a toss… !!! If ever I belong to any place this is it… I am a Kutchi who has never been to Kutch… Bharuch is home for me and will always remain !!!! I still yearn to go back… hopefully some day I will… !!! **amen**

4. Indore – 2 years and a few months… but still not quite settled… dont like the place too much…

Four T.V Shows I Love to Watch ( only four?!)

1. Live Cricket nothing beats it…

I dont have any shows in particular… I love watching Nat-geo and discovery or animal planet or music channels or travel and living or movies… but no shows in particular… I loved Yeh jo hai zindagi… the old serial.. I still rent its dvd’s some times… !!

Four Places that I have been on Vacation / School tours (I have added school tours coz I wanted to)

1. Bardipada taluka in Dang Forests – Life’s best tour.. 5 days we lived in the jungle and bathed in the river… in November… freezing water mind you… and at 6 in the morning… amazing pushing would happen to enter the water…

this was the best school picnic ever… and a lot of my friends till day talk of those days… we would run in the bamboo jungles… whistles would determine our day schedules… we would eat unbelievably oily potato and brinjal sabzi… the potatoes not even peeled… but those were the days… really !!!!!!!!

2. Saurashtra tour – This was a horrible tour in a way… the teachers organised this trip only to all temples… they wanted to visit temples and they made us visit temples and sleep in Dharamshala’s for 5 days.. the only saving grace was the gir forest visit where i saw a lioness in the wild for the first time in my life… we saw 2 lioness trying to drag a cow… thats where the fascination for the wild life started… over all this trip with friends et all was fantastic… only the locations could have been better… but well those teachers were such darlings… so I forgive them… !!

3. Nainital / Jim Corbett – For my honeymoon… a fantastic trip for the first time I had enough money to sleep in nicest hotels and money was not an issue.. I borrowed for it too… just in case…!! We had a whale of a time… we would eat 5 times and errr… never mind…

We had not decided a venue.. I just booked tickets to Delhi and back.. and we took our Lonely planet and just left… on station atleast 20 friends came to drop us… and 2 passengers told me I am a very lucky man to have such friends… the whole station was set alight with unbelievable noise… !!!!! (sigh I miss you my friends)

We thought of mussorie, shimla and eventually ended up near the tigers… !!! but nainital was necessary or else hetal would have killed me if we spent all 9 days in corbett… !! lol… on our train journey in the morning we were about to reach Delhi & when we were discussing where to go a Army man who sat oppposite to us looked as us and asked if we kids were newly married & then he gave a big sigh that we hadnt even decided where we were going for our honeymoon…. eventually he felt so protective towards us that he led us to the travel counter and warned us that Delhi is not so safe after all !!!!!

the only thing I missed was spotting a tiger in the wild… I still havent done it still and hope to do it sooon…

4. Manali ‘ 08 – Although I have been here earlier this was a special trip coz I took my mom with me… she has seen most states in south etc.. but her life’s biggest wish has always been to be to himachal and kashmir… Some how she has travelled down south innumerable times and a lot of other states but never these two… Last year I took her to Manali after forcing her that I and hetal wont go without her… My wife got punjabi’s stiched for her and though she never wears them she wore on this trip we even had her wear fur coats and gum boots and made her slide in the snow… all in all I just simply felt greatly satisfied…

and I hope to take her to Kashmir next year…

My Favourite Food Items

1. Pizza (anything with bread and cheese actually I love bread and cheese)

2. Samosa’s

3. Masala Chicken ( from one hotel in Bharuch “Apna Chicken”

4. Home made typical gujarati thali… (with rotli, shaak, aamras, daal, kachumber, idla et all)

Four Websites that I visit daily (not mentioning wp)

1. Google – reader, mails

2. moneycontrol

3. cricinfo

4. yahoo

Four Places that I would Rather be

1. Home – Bharuch

2. Manali ( I m going to retire here… Crafty we need to gather money)

3. Corbett ( there is a toss up between this and Manali actually right Crafty ?? )

4. Naggar ( this is a very very beautiful and peaceful place near manali.. a lovely small town… nice to live a quiet retired life…

Four Things I hope to do before Time Runs out

1. Visit Congo (Zaire) once in my life

2. See the savana and the serengeti

3. Visit the Amazon…

4. Sorry but I have to do this once.. and I must mention it … I once in my life want to go to lake superior in Canada and go Moose hunting… ( i m against hunting but I want to go there in open season once in my life time and shoot a moose and eat it and I ll drink beer too once I m there… ) (please ignore this) ( there is a sadist in me too )

Four Novels I Wish I was Reading for the first Time ( I dint understand the logic of this, so I am making it into 4 of my faves)

1. The adventures of Tom Swayer

Sorry just this one… I have read it atleast 5-6 times and I cannot think of any other novel… this novel was the best I read till date… and it appealed immensely to the Tom inside me… !!! really…

Four Movies that I can watch over and over again ( i ll list 7 since I listed only 1 novel okay !!!!! )

1. The Ghost & the Darkness

The founder of the princely state of Jamnagar was the Great Jam Rawal, who descended on the northern

The founder of the princely state of Jamnagar was the Great Jam Rawal, who descended on the northern coast of Kathiawar in 1535 A.D

Jam Rawals father Jam Lakhaji ruled in Terabanu in Kutch.

According to bardic chronicles, Jam Lakhaji had two cousins Tamachi Deda and Hamirji Jadeja, they envied his reputation for valor. Their envy was hightened by the fame of Jam Lakhaji at the siege of Pawagadh. So largely did he contribute to its capture by Bahadurshah, the Emperor of Gujarat, that he was bestowed 12 villages by him. As Jam Lakaji was going to take possession of his new fef, he was treacherously killed by his cousins Tamachi Deda and Hamirji Jadeja. Jam Lakhajis son Jam Rawal escaped and on growing up, took vengance of his fathers murder in the same manner by killing Hamirji Jadeja.

Hamirjis two sons Khengarji and Sahibji fled to Delhi and after twelve months of waiting to meet the Great Moghul Emperor Humayun, they got the chance to join the crowd goingalong with the Emperor for lion hunting.

During the lion hunt, they got the chance to kill the lion just when it was going to attack the Emperor. As a reward, an army of 1,00,000 was sent with them to regain back their kingdom.

When Jam Rawal heard of the two princes coming back to the Kutch with the imperial army, he started getting ready for the battle. On one night, Goddess Ashapura came in his dream and told him that as he had broken the oath taken on her name about not killing Hamirji, even though, he was the person responsible for the death of his father. She should have punished him, but as he had at all other times honored her. So he should no longer dwell in Kutch but cross the sea and take Kathiawar as a dwelling place.

Upon awakening he called his counselors and discussed the dream, they agreed that he must leave Kutch and found for himself a Kingdom across the Gulf. So Jam Rawal along with his soldiers and many traders marched out. On the way he killed and conquered the territory of King Tamachi the other conspirator in the killing of his father, and he also conquered the town of Dhrol and its dependencies and gave them to his brother Hardholji, who was later killed in battle during that period, and the State of Dhrol was given to his eldest son, Jasoji.

Thus Jam Rawal made himself master of a great territory and the need for a capital arose.

The story goes like this, that once on a hunting trip on the land of present day Jamnagar, a hare was found to be brave enough to turn on the hunting dogs and putting them to flight. Deeply impressed by this, Jam Rawal thought that if this land can breed such hares, if his capital was built on this land, the men born here would be superior than other men.

He counsulted his astrologers and wise men, and the day chosen for laying the foundation stone was the 7th day of the bright half of the month of srawan, VS 1956. (August 1540 AD) on the banks of two rivers Rangmati and Nagmati and named it Nawanagar meaning new town.

Nawanagar eventually came to be known as Jamnagar meaning the town of the Jams.

This is the email I wrote after spending 6 months in India. Am posting it here, because at the time, I got a huge response from lots of people mostly about choosing a life direction. Hope this inspires you too.

—————————————————–

Dear Friends,

Hope all of you are well.

It has been a long time since we connected. I came to India in May with no particular agenda. Usually, I am (or try to be) pretty organized and detail out the work that I will get done in four months time. If I can nail down a daily time-table, fantastic….

However, this trip has been significantly different. One conscious intent I had was to live and travel simply. Second intent was to let things evolve – there was no time-table. I was in India for 6 months and travelled to Chennai, Mysore, Bangalore, Mumbai, Pune, Vadodara, Ahmedabad, Jamnagar, Bhatia, Pavagadh, Kalol and many smaller hamlets. I have not taken flights while travelling. Most of my travels has been in dusty state transportation buses, tractors and foot. On few occassions when I travelled from Gujarat to B’lore/Chennai, I travelled by train – strictly regular class. While I could not stick to “less than $2 a day” (because of the train rides), the daily trip average has come to “less than $2 a day.” I ate and drank whatever was offered.

It was a stark, gritty, humbling and sublime journey to experience. I really understood what it meant to not have a choice (even if you had the will). I learnt that the common person has a huge heart of gold. I learnt that unplanned, unmanaged rampant urban development can ruin lives. I learnt that people are very quickly impressed if you speak fluent English. I learnt, yet again, that in a goup setting kids have an uncanny ability to solve complex emotional issues in a simple way. I learnt that there is a fair amount of anti-NRI sentiment in urban areas. I learnt that people living in urban areas are giddily optimistic of making “as much money as an NRI.” I learnt that while some people living in adjoining rural areas are willing to shed their rural culture in hopes of making it big, I also learnt that others were questioning development only in big cities and the resultant cost to the poor farmer. I learnt how simple information is hard to come by. I learnt how corporation officials stupidly hold on to concealing information. I learnt how real the need is for toilet facilities (especially for women). I experienced illness (chikanguniya and diarrhoea) due to water contamination and bad sanitation. I learnt how ladies waiting rooms at railway platforms are psuedo transition and pickup points for young girls into prostitution. I knew but learnt again, how huge an impact bollywood has on all age groups. I learnt that literacy is not the magic cure – it could further expose the person in fact. In the middle of a particularly dark day, I learnt that there is goodness in every heart, laughter in every wrinkle and kindness and generosity in every calloused hand.

India is all of that, juxtaposed together. I shy away from characterizing these observations as contrasting – just what it is. Sharing a haiku along these lines – “What is, is. What isn’t, also is.”

Some of you may wonder, why I did this. While for the past 12 years I have been associated and founded non-profit organizations and activities, I have wanted to take that experience deeper. To make meaningful changes in my life – incorporate those changes in the way I live, eat and earn a living. It has not been an “activity” for some years now – it is a way of life and every day the intent gives deeper clarity. Clarity is simply sublime.

Jamnagar, Bhavnagar has some of best showers but Ahmedabad is unfortunate to have this luxury!!! my wife and I usually prefer the season of winter and monsoon, due to their “cold” effects.

…yaaaaa…you are right!!! ‘was on break from bloggging…I know..I know..i have promised to blog everyday but unfortunately, i could not!!! pardon me..but one good news is I have many things to share with you…but it was followed by the harsh fact…the bad news..I have not enough time to share it with you!!! this is the paradox of life….you can’t predict anything about it but you still plan for eternity!!!!

so back to track… actually i was at Jamnagar due to my official work. You know, Jamanagar is very much famous for its Bandhanis.. a hand made beautifully colored clothings for women with attractive and enchanting patterns..please look at the photos…

the pride of Gujarat- bandhani from Jamnagar

.. I ahve bought for my family..the rates are reasonable ..starting from 600 to 8000 Rs and more !!! but the rates are proper to match the value it imbibed…

…………..so must go to Jamnagar and must..must buy Bandhanis for your loved ones!!! In jamnagar, i dont like the things…it has nothing to attract tourists..it has just Lakhota Talav( water is evaporated!!), Smashan( or funeral place–nothing to see, the statues are in bad and pitty conditions..dont waste your time for it..)Radia hanuman temple( peaceful place)Bala Hanuman( where from last 30 or more years, uninterrupted Ram-dhun is going on..!!!), Irwin hospital( i haven’t seen), Hospital for color-/photo therapy( I have heard about it but haven’t seen)

so..go for jamnagar and look for something new……

Besides that, last Sunday was quite busy.. I was at the function organized by our mewada suthar society for gujarat…I have chance to see my old hostel mates, friends, relatives etc….but on the whole, the dau was quite boring..but one thing is good in whole day was..my old friend Kartik was at my home with his sweet family..we enjoyed a lot……….

So, this is the life and its flow..you proposes and it disposes sweetly….!!!!

okey ..bye..

Good morning friends. As I was in River Narmada last week for some picnic with the family, there is this article about the Narmada waters. That’s why It got my attention to that. There is no Narmada waters for Saurashtra-Kutch.

The breach in the Narmada canal near Lakhtar in Surendranagar has resulted in water crisis in Rajkot, Jamnagar and Kutch which is expected to last till Monday.

Nitin Patel, water supplies minister, admitted that these areas of Rajkot, Jamnagar and Kutch will continue to face crisis as the breach will be filled by Monday. Patel said that at present the water in stock was being used. He said on an average 93 crore litres of Narmada water was used for drinking purposes.

Giving out reasons for frequent breaches in Narmada main canal, the minister said that he felt pumping of water from canal could be main reason for the breach. He added that pumps are kept on canal lining and due to constant use, it weakens lining resulting in beach. He said that government has decided to allow these pumping of water from the canal but has instructed farmers to have their pumps kept far away from canal lining. “Expert committee which was formed to study the frequent breaches in the canal is yet to give out its report,” he added.

Giving details of water crisis in the state, he said the state was depending heavily on Narmada and at present only 250 trips of tankers were made to supply water in the remote villages in Porbandar. He further added that there was no village which did not have any local source of water. But during summer, Narmada water was supplied and local source was used as a secondary source.

Patel said that Shantanu Consul, secretary of department of drinking water supply, has in a letter to all secretaries in the country, asked them to follow Water and Sanitation Management Organisation (WASMO) model for managing drinking water for rural people on a long term basis.

Patel said that Pani Samiti at village level should be adopted to shoulder full responsibility for developing, managing and protecting local water sources and also planning, constructing and managing village water supply systems. Apart from that, water tariffs must be collected as per WASMO. –The Times of India

02:27 AM, 23rd May, 2009 “Hosh bekhabar se hue unke bagair voh jo humse keh na sake dil ne keh

02:27 AM, 23rd May, 2009

“Hosh bekhabar se hue unke bagair
voh jo humse keh na sake dil ne keh diya
saaki ne phir se mera jaam bhar diya”

Everybody in the dept. contributes 50 bucks, some snacks (and cake) are ordered and gifts are bought from the collected amount.
The farewell party starts at 5.30 PM; everybody is sent a mail beforehand.
Generally, the supervisor of the person leaving begins with a speech citing the nice memories he has of the leaving subordinate (if not, he cooks up some story for the occasion). Then a few colleagues take turns to share their perceptions of and experiences with the outgoing employee. The leaving employee takes centre stage next and starts with his version. It’s a small essay describing the good things of the group, department, proceeding with recognition some important people (usually HOD, leads and colleagues) and ending with best wishes to the department. Finally the HOD (or some senior person) is asked to speak about the leaving employee.

“Dil dooba dil dooba.. neeli aankhon main yeh dil dooba..”

Then, all have their share of snacks and cake while having casual banter with the leaving employee. During all this time, the jersey is passed and people write their comments on the jersey which is finally given to the leaving employee as a memorabilia. People disperse; some go back to their chairs to resume work but most call it the day.

Yesterday, i was the leaving employee. A tie, a pen-drive and a jersey; I got as gifts from my department (Central Technical Services).

“balam se maanga maanga re balam se maanga re.. namak ishq ka…tere ishq ka..”

And of course, I made a few blunders. Firstly, after cutting the cake, I was supposed to give the first slice to my supervisor who was standing besides me. What do I do? Have it myself…. and I realized this when I saw everyone looking at me with eyes wide open…terrible it was..

Then, while thanking my colleagues, I could manage to mention only a few names leaving others to wonder whether I had some past-life animosity with them….
Anyways… would like to thank Rakesh, Minaz, Ashok sir, Yogesh sir, Pavan gupta (not shimnekar!!), Jignesh sir, Meetali, Swati, Geetanjali, Vikrant sir (and i guess I am again missing a few names) for making my time at RIL enjoyable and memorable. And bhargavi…. I knew you would not be speaking during the farewell…. i am expecting something from you as a comment to this blog.

“tere aane ki jab khabar maheke..
teri khusboo se saara ghar maheke…”

Frankly speaking, I won’t be missing RIL and have no intentions of coming back to Jamnagar refinery again…but I would miss the wonderful friends I am leaving. I would also miss the township…i loved it so so much…. so serene, pure, well managed, green, modern, vast, awesome…

Thanks for the farewell and love.

“Kaho na kaho.. yeh aankhen bolti hai o sanam o sanam.. o mere sanam.. mohabbat ke safar main yeh sahara hai..”

(Sorry…but the songs were disturbing me while writing..so I included them to trouble the readers too.)

No, I have not been fired for incompetency or indiscipline. How could they? I have been a decent, ha

No, I have not been fired for incompetency or indiscipline. How could they? I have been a decent, hard working employee, and my supervisor was impressed with me (until the day I tendered my resignation!!).

Yes, I offered resignation…..why?…. for value addition (read it as going for MBA). I had to serve a month’s notice period: that time when you hand-over the charge to your replacement, get clearances from numerous agencies (HR, Department, Housing, Security, Accounts, Vehicle etc..) and disturb the decorum of the office. Charge hand-over was not a tough task. I have not done any rocket science during my time here, just simple simulation flowsheets, excel, and MS word (for reports). The NIT Warangal guy who replaces me already knew those stuff (infact he humbled me on more than one occasions). They said that getting clearances is as arduous as getting into RIL. In my case, both were trouble-free. May be the systems are improving. But I am yet to get my relieving and work ex. letter, so there is still a chance of being hassled by the notorious HR. Keeping my fingers crossed!!

Last few days at office, at township….. they say, ‘you are lucky’ with a big smile.’ For some (many) vague reason, there is a general sense of job dissatisfaction here. Though the attrition rate has drastically reduced due to recession and RIL has managed to avoid lay-offs, employees are always on a look-out for better prospects. And hence when they see someone amongst them leaving, they can’t avoid that big smile. I return the favor with an even bigger one. Saurabh (my friend & flatmate at RIL) doesn’t miss any opportunity to remind me of all the last-time things: the last visit to Motikhavdi Rmart, last Monday at RIL and so on..

I keep myself busy by interacting with colleagues & seniors. A couple of days back, I went to a HR person and sat there for an hour. We chatted about HR management as a career after MBA. He helped me. I made a hasty call…. I am not going for Human resource Management. I also talked to a VP. He asked my specialization interest. I am sure he wanted to here ‘Operations’. I disappointed him. He didn’t waste his time on me any further. Obviously, his time is precious!! There have been a few discussions about Ahemdabad (that is where I am headed next)… it’s a nice city.. gets terribly hot.. many malls.. good places to eat (mostly veg.).. S.G road, C.G road.. Not a lot in terms of night life..

But all the conversations end with the smile, ‘you are lucky.’

Now, even when I am alone sometimes in my flat (most recently last night when Saurabh went for a movie), I find myself hearing, ‘you are lucky.’ I simle.
