When fellow journalism post grad student and sport blogger, Josh Pettitt, came up with the idea of having a ‘best sports icon of the noughties’ blog debate, I wanted to do something different.

Who is a viable, yet thought-provoking candidate, I thought? After considering Ronnie O’Sullivan with his marvelously-idiosyncratic approach, and (the original, portly, R9) Ronaldo, I decided this was not an accolade to be given to someone whose greatness must be explained in detail. It must be fairly self explanatory.

It is for this reason that I feel the greatest sportsman of the naughties is seven-times Tour de France winner, Lance Armstrong.

His achievements in cycling are well documented, as are his past medical struggles; yet there is a suspicion, due to cycling’s endemic doping problems, that he is somehow undeserving of our esteem.

Firstly, rather than extoll his illustrious, yet well documented career, I feel I need to snare this elephant in the room, shoot it, and use its tusks to murder anyone still pedaling this pathetic, xenophobic myth.

Lance Armstrong is undoubtedly the most tested athlete in the world. So why hasn’t he been caught?

To my mind the only answer is: he’s innocent. High profile doping cases such as Marco Pantani and Ivan Basso have tarnished the name of the sport, but the practice is by no means uniform. The only real evidence to suggest Armstrong dopes is his imperiously-consistent form. Oh, and the constant whining from the French that this yank dare beat them over the Alps and Pyrannees.

The second argument against his coronation as the noughties’ best sportsman concerns his team.

For anyone unfamiliar with road cycling, the Johan Bruyneel managed US Postal service team (which later became Discovery), held a masochistic-like dominance during Armstrong’s reign.

Super domestiques (a cycling term meaning blokes who bust their lungs for their leader, only to by dropped in the final miles and finish last) like George Hincapie, Levi Leipheimer, Roberto Heras, and Floyd Landis, many of who went on to be team leaders themselves, would take turns at the front of the peleton, turning the screw under which their competitors crumbled.

From this launch pad, with his rivals cracking, Lance would launch. The fittest men on the planet attacking each other on the world’s steepest mountains in one its most tactical sports is, at its best, unrivaled in drama. In this, Lance was king.

Surely then, this team advantage negates any claim of Armstrong’s individual greatness? Not quite.

Just as Mark Cavendish has proved he is currently the fastest man in road cycling despite needing his team to get there, Jan Ullrich, Lance’s closest competitor for most of his career, was also backed by the flashy T-Mobile team which delivered his own Maillot Jaune in 1998.

Although his team were an inexorable facet of his dominance, the Texan was still chosen as the best: the man capable of converting all this team work when the final explosion to the line was required.

His status as an icon can hardly be quarreled with either. As active in his charity work as he ever was in the saddle, his story from 40% prognosis to legend is one of the most remarkable in modern sporting history.

If, on top of his seven tour wins and remarkable 3rd place comeback this year at the venerable age of 37 (despite being ordered not to attack team leader, Alberto Contador), you are in need of any more convincing, here are my top three Armstrong career moments.

1) “The Look”
At their best, there are few sporting occasions quite as dramatic as the top road cyclists in the world attacking each other on a steep climb. In 2001, Lance Armstrong was looking for his 3rd tour win. He looks his career nemesis, Jan Ullrich, in the eye in a display of concrete self belief before annihilating the German’s Tour de France aspirations for another year.

2) Off Road
2003, Tour de France Stage 9. Armstrong and ace climber Joseba Beloki are chasing Kazakhstani, Alexander Vinokourov. Beloki’s tyre glue melts under the intense speed and 50 degree heat of the day and what follows beggars belief. It may seem like it gives Armstrong an advantage, but try riding through a field on a finely tuned road bike and see how, if by any miracle you don’t crash, it affects your race momentum. This is true bike-handling class.

3) Sestriere
In 1999, this was one of the first times the world had seen Armstrong’s post-cancer form. He simply blows the field away, eventually winning the tour by a staggering 7mins 36secs.

Asterix & Obelix

Respect style. Respect a sense of flair, humor, symbolism and history.

Because whatever ever else you can say about Dope Doc #1, Eufemiano Fuentes, he’s got his whimsical side. Sure, call him dirty, a slime-ball, liar and cheat. He’s all those things and more, probably a bad dresser and a cheap tipper. But never question his sense of humor.

Here’s a man who sets up secret code names for himself and faithful servant Merino Batres using the character names of the most famous cartoon in French history. Asterix, the smart one, and Obelix, the bumbling hulk. The Adventures of Asterix began in 1959 and to date has 34 books in the series. No French boy grows up without these two.

Yes, Operacion Puerto was just such an adventure, a wild and secret ride around the world of doping. What else would you call a man with 100 bags of blood  in the fridge? A man coding the bags by naming them after the name of the rider’s pet. Stop and appreciate the style, the irreverence and playfulness. Yes, drugs are bad but the sly humor cannot be beat.

And while you’re at it, consider that Mr. Ullrich was swinging by Eufemiano’s place to get ready for the biggest bike race in the world: The Tour de France. He was visiting a French cartoon character to prepare for the French race. How amusing symbolic is that?

Our hats are off to Mr. Fuentes. The man has some ethical issues he needs to resolve. But there’s no denying we need his style and humor.

First there was blood, then there was blood and last there was a handshake. I learned the other day France would no longer comemmorate 11 November as the day of the win over German forces in 1918 but as a celebration of the French-German friendship. Countless memories came to my diehard sport fan mind.

That year when a 22 year-old Jan Ullrich killed über popular Richard Virenque’s hopes to win le Tour de France in Andorra or when 400 metres queen Marie-José Pérec’s main rival was a certain Grit Breuer (who would later fail a doping test). I could name the recent rivalry between the two handball national teams that started with a controversial one goal Germany win at home during the 2007 World Championships and stopped a year later with a 10 goal rally by les Bleus at the European Championships. But obviously the one memory that stands out is this.

The story of France and Germany is of two potent neighbours and I don’t know why I need to come up with a Ned Flanders – Homer Simpson comparison. Truth is from Bixente Lizarazu to Nikola Karabatic and Franck Ribéry or Rudi Völler and Klaus Allofs, a number of French players became absolute stars in Germany and the other way round. Long jump superstar Heike Drechsler even married a French decathlonian…

There’s a song I’ve always liked and that is my personal anthem to the French-German friendship. It is a song by French rock band Noir Désir called “Marlene” as a tribute to German actress, singress, former girlfriend of Jean Gabin and most of all anti-Nazi activist, Marlene Dietrich.

Belgian cyclist Franck Vandenbroucke died of heart trouble, doctors say, but had needle marks all over his left arm.

Irgendwie muss man ja was über Jan Ullrich schreiben. Aber ich möchte das in diesem Fall einfach so machen, dass ich auf andere Medien verweise. Es ist schon so viel geschrieben worden in diesen Tagen, so viel gesendet worden. Wer sich den Spiegel noch nicht gekauft hat, der soll das tun. Der Artikel lohnt sich. Nebenbei bemerkt ist der aktuelle Spiegel für Sportsympathisanten hervorragend, weil so viel Sport (Michael Schumacher ist die Titel-Story) gab es wohl noch nie im Hamburger Nachrichtenmagazin. Hier gibt’s zudem den Verweis auf einem Artikel von SPIEGEL ONLINE zum Thema Jan Ullrich.

Andreas Burkert und Thomas Kistner schrieben am Montag in der Süddeutschen Zeitung über den alten Radfahrhelden. Zum Artikel in der Online-Variante geht’s HIER.

Natürlich war auch die Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung bei der Berichterstattung dabei. Dem BERICHT folgte heute von Rainer Seele ein KOMMENTAR.

Idag var det första lite tuffare aeroba passet inplanerat.

På schemat stod 10×400m på 90sekunder med 1 minuts vila. Kändes på förhand som en rätt tuff uppgift men gick glädjande bra.
Alla loppen låg mellan 88-90 sekunder efter ungefär samma mellantider, 20-42-65-89.

Det som gjorde loppen riktigt tuffa var den hårda kalla vinden som svepte över Baldershov idag.

Den hämmande faktorn som trots allt fanns i dag var stumheten i framsida lår sen gårdagens styrketräningsdebut. Men nu börjar man känna att man är igång och det känns faktiskt oväntat bra såhär i början!

The Tour is a very complicated sporting event. To be perfectly honest I don’t completely understand it yet, I don’t even think I am close to completely understanding it! I know this because often I will be watching it with my wife or a friend and they will ask why one of the riders just did something strange and all I can do is shrug my shoulders (or more commonly, pretend I know and offer a guess that sounds smart enough to answer the question!). I think the thing that creates the most confusion while watching the Tour is the ‘unwritten’ or ‘unofficial’ rules that the cyclists follow. Often these rules go directly against what is strategically smart, or what is basic common sense, drawing a collective “huh?” from audiences all over the world! I have alluded to them a few times in previous blog posts, but I think it is time to dedicate a whole post to these rules.

The Principle

You will never understand any of the unofficial rules unless you first understand this principal. If you read this principal and think it is stupid then you will probably not enjoy the rest of the post (or for that matter the Tour itself). The Principal can be summed up in the following:

“If you want to win the race than you want to beat someone, not take advantage.“

Essentially the principal is saying that winning by exploiting another rider’s bad luck is hollow and not satisfying! You are riding with the same group of people for a whole month, in extreme heat and torrential rain, up steep mountains and then down extremely dangerous descents, through 5 or 6 different countries! If you win because a spectator ran into the guy next to you causing him to crash, then chances are you aren’t better than him – just luckier!

Understanding this principal helps you understand why the following ‘unofficial rules’ occur:

-If a leader is taking a “bathroom break” then none of the other leaders attack.

-There is no attacking in the feeding zone.

-If another leader crashes then you don’t use their misfortune to attack and gain time!

This last rule is a big one, especially because it happens regularly! Crashing is a big part of the Tour, it just happens. A good example of this last Tour happened between Lance Armstrong his main competitor, the German rider Jan Ullrich. During the race Jan Ullrich had a crash (he literally flew off the side of the road and fell down a hill, see below), up to that point him and Armstrong were incredibly close, if Armstrong wanted to seal up a race victory he could have done it there and then – just kept cycling and claim a good few minutes on Ullrich. But he didn’t, he slowed down and waited, allowing Ullrich to join him. Armstrong went on to win the Tour, but it wasn’t because he exploited Ullrich’s bad luck. Well two years later Armstrong had a nasty fall during one of the mountain stages. Ullrich was just 15 seconds behind him in the race for the overall leader, Ullrich could have taken advantage of the situation, but he didn’t. Later on he told the French press:

“If I would have won this race by taking advantage of someone’s bad luck, then the race was not worth winning.”

Or as another cyclist put it:

“There’s always been a predictable code of honor, when you ride with the same people for three weeks of a Tour or a whole season, it is a matter of respect. You don’t take advantage of someone’s bad luck.”

But of course there are other rules besides the ones listed above. The two main ones being:

Jan Ullrich literally flew off the road and rolled down a hill!

If the Tour de France should pass a rider’s hometown, it is OK for the rider to go ahead, take a detour, then come back to the race. No one will complain. The largest nation represented in the Tour is France (obviously), thus lots of cyclists will be at one point of the Tour riding through their home town or city. It is an unwritten courtesy to allow them to enjoy that by going ahead, waving to their family and friend and grabbing a glass of champagne. Of course the rider won’t use this as an opportunity to attack.

Secondly, and I think this one causes the most confusion. No one attacks on the final stage. At the end of the day, the biggest achievement is simply finishing the Tour, just being able to survive it! So for all the cyclists who have made it, the last day is just about riding into Paris. But you may say:  ”this is stupid. Its not over till its over! What about Cadel Evans who was only 58 seconds behind Sastre, if only he attacked on the last day he could have won it!” The only response to that is, he had 20 days to win it, if he hasn’t won it by the time he got to the last stage, he hasn’t won it! The Tour de France is firstly about finishing the monstrously grueling event and secondly about winning it.

That answer is probably immensely unsatisfying! I a sorry. There may be more to it than that. If so please feel free to comment.

I guess the iceberg analogy works well with the Tour. There is only so much that we can see, the rest stays unseen, a strange mix of tradition, honour and friendship amongst competitors! Is it confusing? Yes. Does it add to the beauty of the Tour? Definitely. Would I want it changed? Not at all.

Und er hat sicher recht, unser Wahl-Schweizer, jeder Tour-Teilnehmer duscht mindestens ein Mal täglich.

Succes doet volgen. Na de benoeming van Josef Ratzinger als paus Benedictus de zoveelste, proberen de Duitse media de self-made-popes van de wielerwereld te worden. En eerlijk is eerlijk: de publieke omroep ZDF kwam gisteren met een KEI-harde scoop. Echt wel! Dat ze tegelijkertijd de basisprincipes van de sport dan nog moeten uitleggen aan de lezer of kijker, nemen we op de koop toe.

Sterk was de aandrang om de Duitse media geheel links te laten liggen. Maar ja, dat zou journalistiek gezien niet correct zijn. Alle meningen, alle feiten moeten onder de loep. Check, check, dubbelcheck. En misschien moet ik gewoon de humor van de selectieve berichtgeving inzien!

Terzake. Na inzage in het dossier van dopingzondaar Patrik Sinkewitz bleek dat de Belgische ploeg QuickStep systematisch doping toediende in de tijd dat de renner uit Fulda daar reed. En ploegleider Patrick Lefevere wist ervan, die zelfverklaarde anti-dopingstrijder! Het grote nieuws is echter dat de WADA (World Anti Doping Agency) de inhoud van de dossiers pas vorige week naar de internationale wielerbond UCI stuurde. Als dit waar is, betekent dit een inbreuk op het eigen anti-dopingprogramma. Wat best groot nieuws is.

Sinkewitz zou, volgens het ZDF-programma Frontal 21, tegenover de WADA de dopingverklaring hebben afgelegd. Hij biechtte gebruik van epo, testosteron en groeihormonen op. De teamartsen zouden hem vlak voor de koers cortisoneninjecties hebben gegeven. Er zou zelfs een geheim trainingskamp hebben plaatsgevonden, waarin dopingdiëten werden voorgeschreven. In 2007 werd Sinkewitz gepakt, waarop ARD en ZDF besloten geen live beelden meer uit te zenden. Sinkewitz kreeg ontslag van zijn toenmalige team T-Mobile, dat later ontmaskerd werd als systematische dopingploeg.

Zo zetten de Duitse mediadominees hun eigen queeste tegen die vieze, vuile wielerwereld voort. Ze gaan daarbij nietsontziend te werk. Dat ze helemaal geen wielercultuur hebben, maakt daarbij weinig uit. Die sport moet schoon!

Het gebrek aan koersinzicht en wielercultuur komt prachtig naar voren in het interview met Jörg Jaksche (van afgelopen zondag in de Berlijnse krant Der Tagesspiegel). Eerst zet de vergeten wielrenner de dopingkraan open, vervolgens komt de interviewer met vragen van een niveautje kleuterschool.

‘De etappes in het begin van de Tour zien er helemaal niet zwaar uit…’
Jaksche: “Nou, dat valt nog tegen hoor! 180 mannen rijden schouder aan schouder met 40 kilometer per uur. Het is een razendsnelle mierenhoop. Daar wordt je soms heel erg chagrijnig van!”

‘Leg eens uit: waarom krijgt bij al die stress toch nog iemand het in zijn hoofd om 200 kilometer alleen voorop te fietsen? En heel vaak lukt het dan niet eens om te winnen…’
“Deze renners willen de held zijn. Ook is het belangrijk om voor hun sponsor in beeld te rijden. Maar daarna is hij zo moe, dan zie je hem een paar dagen niet meer!” (HA-HA-HA!)

‘Eigenlijk kan iedereen blij en trots zijn die zo’n hoge berg beklommen heeft. Maar dan begint de ellende pas: een afdaling met 100 kilometer per uur op hele smalle bandjes! Is dat gevaarlijk?’
“Voor mij niet. Dan kom ik juist bij van de inspanningen.” (De chagrijngrens komt in zicht)

‘Je ellebogen zien er helemaal verweerd uit!’
“Ja hè? Maar je zou mijn lichaam eens moeten zien!” (HA-HA-HA!!!)

‘Op televisie zagen we een documentaire waarin een renner vaseline op zijn kont gesmeerd kreeg.’ (HI-HI-HI)
“Verzorging is heel belangrijk. Als ik een puist krijg, dan verander ik mijn zithouding en krijg ik rugpijn.” (GRRRRR!)

De interviewer heeft het nu door en schakelt weer over op het ‘gemakkelijkere’ thema doping. Voor mij, een wielerliefhebber uit een land met een lange historie, vrij lachwekkend. Nederland heeft een wielergeschiedenis waarin doping ook een stevige rol speelt, maar waarin de sportieve prestaties vooropstaan. Iedereen gebruikt namelijk, dus zijn de verhoudingen weer rechtgetrokken. Nederlandse volgers snappen dat, Duitsers krijgen het nog uitgelegd. Is ook logisch: pas sinds de komst van Jan Ullrich zijn ze echt in het journalistenpeloton te vinden. En dat vonden ze bij de ARD zo’n grote, sterke sportman dat ze direct miljoenen in de T-Mobileploeg pompten. Totdat ze begrepen hoe het echt zat! HA-HA-HA!!!!!

Oké, duidelijk. Gewoon lekker Tour de France kijken is er ook dit jaar niet bij. Daar steekt de Duitse pers wel een stokje voor. De stoelpotenzagerij is namelijk alweer begonnen: Jörg Jaksche kreeg alle ruimte om de sport nog zwarter te maken dan hij al is. Ook tijdens het Duits kampioenschap in Cottbus was het fatalisme en wereldverbeteraarsgevoel overal in de perszaal speurbaar. Het journaille vormde één blok: “Goed interview!”

Jörg Jaksche smeet in 2007 zijn dopingverleden op tafel en sindsdien kent zijn klaagzang geen einde. Gisteren nog, in de Berlijnse krant Der Tagesspiegel. “Ja, en dat zal ik de toekomst zo blijven”, antwoordt hij op de vraag of dit jaar een bedrieger op het hoogste trapje van het Tourpodium zal staan. De wielervolger (het VOLK dus) is de renner Jaksche allang vergeten, de teams net zo. Der Tagesspiegel blijkbaar niet: die lieten hem een pagina volpraten. Hij beschrijft onder meer de werking van verschillende middelen en de wijze waarop renners in contact komen met doping. Wat een eerlijkheid…

Het understatement van de eeuw: veel goed nieuws konden de Duitsers in de afgelopen jaren niet vieren. De T-Mobileploeg, die systematisch doping toediende. Patrik Sinkewitz uit de Tour gegooid. Jan Ullrichs reputatie, niet te vergeten. Maar wat is dat toch, die verdrietverwerking van Duitsers? Die ongeremde compensatiedrang om de onderste steen boven te krijgen in de sport? Het is als een nieuwe, openlijke Wiedergutmachung. De Duitse media moeten en zullen de wielersport schoonvegen òf afbranden (de rug toekeren is financieel niet interessant). George W. Bush zou zijn vingers aflikken. Heal the World, zou een beroemde dubbelgeautopsieerde zanger zeggen.

Eén ding vergeten de dominees. De sport is niet het eigendom van een paar proleten met wereldverbeteraarsaspiraties. Wielrennen is, als geen andere sporttak, een spiegel voor het VOLK. Dat wil over de gele trui van Linus Gerdemann lezen, zien en horen, met in de kantlijn het gelazer om Riccardo Riccò. Niet andersom.

Ik weet het zeker. De verhalen in de Duitse kranten over de Tour blijven links liggen. Geen zin om elke dag artikelen over goede prestaties te lezen, met in de laatste alinea een ‘stille hint’ naar bedrog. Om een voorbeeld te noemen: vandaag beschrijft de Berliner Zeitung de verrassende zegetocht van Martin Reimer (22) in Cottbus. “De Lausitzer mag dus nu een jaar lang de trui met de Duitse vlag aantrekken. Vele prominente renners hebben dit kampioenstricot al eens gedragen: Rolf Aldag, Udo Bölts, Jan Ullrich. Bij hen hing er tegelijkertijd een zweem van doping omheen. Reimer is onbekend en daarom heerst er een vermoeden van onschuld, het vermoeden dat hij door tactisch meesterspel en natuurlijk doorzettingsvermogen als eerste aan de eindstreep kwam.” Altijd die kleine verwijzing, die korrel zout. Zodat ze bij een eventuele ontmaskering naar kunnen verwijzen: zie je, we zeiden toch dat het een vermoeden was!?

Ook de ARD is taboe. De publieke omroep wilde eigenlijk niet eens naarde Tour afreizen, maar ging overstag voor de reclame-inkomsten en de wens van het VOLK. Nu zenden ze een uur per dag uit, in plaats van de ongeveer drie uur die voor een standaardetappe wordt doorgestraald. Dat het VOLK in ieder geval ziet dat ze het met tegenzin doen.

Maak me vooral uit voor naïeveling of verstokte romanticus. Ik wil gewoon genieten van de nomaden van het smalle zadel, vechtend tegen de elementen. Urenlang, zonder bij elke solist of klimgeit een verdachtmaking te horen. Bij mij staat de televisie op Eurosport (Ducrot en Wuyts dringen niet door tot de Berlijnse kabelsignalen). Met een positieve instelling, vanuit de buik van het peloton doet deze zender prima verslag. Alleen jammer van de reclame, maar dat is te accepteren. Mocht er een valsspeler uitgeschopt worden, dan berichten ze daar ook passend over. Keihard. Oprotten. Zoals het hoort. Daarna over tot de (wan)orde van de dagelijkse etappe. Zo wil ik het zien: de renners centraal, de instelling positief, maar realistisch.

In Cottbus sloegen de perslui zich nog maar eens op de schouders. Prima werk, de beerput is open! Bijna werden ze op hun wenken bediend door Patrik Sinkewitz. Heel even reed hij alleen vooruit. De pennen druppelden bloed, de columnisten zagen hun kans schoon. Totdat de groep hem weer opslokte. Verweesde blikken. Scheisse.

Deze instelling is gemeengoed geworden: afbranden die handel, laat de corrupte schandaalwereld vol valsspelers maar bloeden. Boren we daarmee het VOLK een fietsfeest door de neus? Dat is dan maar zo. Wij verbeteren de wereld. Met Jörg Jaksche. Die is tenminste eerlijk.

It will be interesting to see what Lance Armstrong does in the Tour de France this year. Personally, I’ve always felt that he used performance enhancing drugs. After his long battle with cancer, in which he had numerous malignant tumors in his abdomen, lungs and brain, it is hard to believe that he won the most difficult cycling race in the world, beating incredibly talented cyclists such as Jan Ullrich, 7-straight years without the help of illegal substances. AUSTIN, Texas – Why wait for France? Lance Armstrong can pop that bottle of champagne now.

He announced the birth of son Max during a break between the Giro d’Italia and the Tour de France next month. Max is Armstrong’s fourth child.

The 37-year-old cycling great posted a message on his Twitter account Thursday night and included a picture of the newborn, playfully sticking out his tongue at the camera.

“Wassup, world? My name is Max Armstrong and I just arrived. My Mommy is healthy and so am I!” Armstrong wrote, noting Max weighed 7 pounds, 5 ounces and was 20 inches long.

Armstrong and his girlfriend, Anna Hansen, announced in December they were expecting a baby in June. Armstrong also has three children with his ex-wife, Kristin.

On Friday, Armstrong wrote that he was watching the French Open on TV with Anna and maxarmstrong1, having already given the baby his own Twitter address. He also appreciated the outpouring of good wishes.

“Thanks to you all for all the great notes, comments, emails, etc. We’re lucky to have you all,” he wrote.

Max’s timing proved impeccable.

Armstrong finished 12th in the Giro d’Italia, which ended May 31. The seven-time Tour de France champion is eyeing a triumphant return to Paris, where he won the Tour seven straight times from 1999 to 2005. The Tour de France begins July 4.

Three years after retiring following his last Tour de France win, Armstrong said in September his return to competition and cycling’s marquee race in 2009. He called his comeback an attempt to raise global awareness in his fight against cancer.

When the pregnancy was announced in December, a spokeswoman for the Lance Armstrong Foundation said that the baby was conceived naturally. Armstrong’s other three children were born using in vitro fertilization with sperm he had banked before undergoing chemotherapy.

The arrival of healthy son is good news for the cyclist after a rough spring. A crash in Spain left Armstrong with a broken collarbone and financial troubles for the sponsor of his Astana team threatened to get the team kicked out of competition.

Astana receives most of its financial support from the Kazakh state holding company Samruk-Kazyna, but the Central Asian nation’s economy has been badly hit by the global financial crisis.

Deze week viel Rabobankrenner Pedro Horillo in een ravijn. Daarom geheel in de geest van onze secretaris vandaag een heuse top tien. Die van de tien meest gedenkwaardige ravijnduiken uit de wielergeschiedenis…

10. Het was maar een heel klein ravijntje, meer een soort sloot eigenlijk, waar Jan Ullrich indook tijdens een Pyreneeënetappe. Maar het werd toch een memorabel sportmoment doordat zijn concurrent Lance Armstrong netjes op hem wachtte. Zoals meestal in de wielersport werd deze geste keurig terugbetaald. Enige jaren later wachtte Ullrich in een klim op Armstrong nadat die ten val was gekomen nadat hij met zijn stuur in de tas van een toeschouwer haakte. Om er ververvolgens door de Amerikaan genadeloos af gereden te worden, dat dan weer wel. 

9. De eer van plaats 9 gaat naar de Fransman Mickael Pichon. Hij viel vorig jaar tijdens de Dauphiné Liberé in een ravijn en liep zware letsels op. Let wel, Pichon staat wat ons betreft symbool voor de anonieme wielrenner die het ravijn in rijdt. Want wie in een kleine koers het ravijn in rijdt, de verkeerde nationaliteit heeft of bij een te klein ploegje rijdt, krijgt slechts zelden de aandacht die hij verdient met zijn daad. In plaats van Mickael Pichon had hier ook Rigoberto Uran kunnen staan (Colombiaan, ravijnduik in de Ronde van Duitsland vorig jaar). Of vele andere namen.

8. De volgende plek wordt bezet door Oscar Pereiro Sio. De voormalige Tourwinnaar mist op 20 juli 2008 een bocht in de afdaling van de Col Agnel. Vreemd eigenlijk, een ervaren renner, een compleet peloton en nog redelijk vroeg in de koers. De Spanjaard stuitert een meter of 5 omlaag om ongelukkig terecht te komen op het asfalt van de weg die na de volgende haarspeldbocht weer terug gedraaid is. Einde Tour voor Pereiro, die er inmiddels weer helemaal bovenop is. De beelden zijn niet erg duidelijk… toch zien? Klik hier.

7. In de Tour van 2008 wordt de Cime de la Bonnette beklommen van de zuidkant. Een hele hoge col, met een spectaculair afdaling. Dat ondervindt ook de Zuid-Afrikaan John-Lee Augustyn van Barloworld. Hij mist een bocht en glijdt een puinhelling af. Gelukkig valt hij niet diep en kan hij met de hulp van een toeschouwer de weg weer bereiken. Een wielrenner zonder fiets, het blijft een raar gezicht. 6. De enige ravijnduik waar ik persoonlijk bij betrokken was. Tijdens een trainingsrit in het Centraal Massief duikt S.van.D. tijdens de afdaling van de Pas de Peyrol (Puy Mary) in een scherpe bocht het ravijn in. Omdat hij achteraan het groepje rijdt, wordt zijn afwezigheid pas enkele kilometers verder ontdekt door de beschermheer. Die besluit om te draaien om te kijken waar zijn trainingsgenoot blijft. Hij komt hem wandelend tegen, op zijn sokken, schoenen in de hand en zonder fiets. Die ligt namelijk ergens in het ravijn. S. blijkt tijdens zijn val eerst een paar meter over steil, zacht gras naar beneden gegleden te zijn en heeft zich vervolgens aan een boompje vast weten te klampen. Hij is op eigen kracht weer naar de weg geklommen, ondanks het drukke verkeer blijkt niemand het ongeluk gezien te hebben. Zijn fiets vinden we vijftien meter onder de weg terug, zonder achterwiel. Dat blijkt op een meter of 50 onder de weg te liggen als we van onderuit een zoekactie starten naar het missende onderdeel. Van onderen is ook pas goed te zien hoe onwaarschijnlijk veel geluk S. gehad heeft. Het had maar een haartje gescheeld of hij was van de steile rotsen afgedonderd, ongetwijfeld met een minder gelukkige afloop. Het wiel is krom. “Shit”, zegt S., “dat wiel heb ik geleend.” 

5. De Tour van ‘96: in de mistige afdaling van de Cormet de Roselend mist de Belg Johan Bruyneel een bocht en duikt het ravijn in. De televisiecamera registreert het feilloos. De wereld houdt zijn adem in, maar zie: Bruyneel is een geluksvogel. Hij klimt zonder problemen weer uit de diepte en kan zijn weg vervolgen. Alleen zijn shirt is een beetje vies geworden. Bruyneel is later erg succesvol als ploegleider. Met Lance Armstrong wint hij zevenmaal de Tour. Klik hier voor de beelden!

4. De Luxemburger Frank Schleck is samen met een medevluchter ontsnapt in een etappe in de Ronde van Zwitserland van 2008. Ze lijken samen op weg naar een fraaie sprint à deux. Helaas, Schleck vliegt over de vangrail in een afdaling. De motorrijder die erachter rijdt, heeft het hele incident in beeld. Wonder boven wonder komt de mazzelaar zonder een schrammetje weer tevoorschijn. De etappe winnen zit er echter niet meer in. 3. Deze week: de Spanjaard Pedro Horillo valt 60 tot 80 meter diep in de Giro d’Italia. Niemand die het gezien heeft, maar zijn ploeggenoot Jos van Emden vindt het wel vreemd dat iemand de fiets van Horillo tegen de vangrail heeft geparkeerd. Toch maar even kijken beneden dus. Daar wordt Horillo aangetroffen op een uitstekende rotspunt. Met diverse breuken en een geperforeerde long. Wonderwel is hij bij bewustzijn en weet hij nog wie hij is. Het liefst wil hij weer op zijn fiets stappen, berichten diverse media. Die uitspraak wordt later genuanceerd door Rabobank. Horillo zou enkel gezegd hebben wie hij was om de doktoren te tonen dat zijn geheugen nog functioneerde. De gelukkige ongelukkige renner wordt geëvacueerd door toevallig aanwezige alpinisten. Gelukkig lijkt hij er weer helemaal bovenop te komen.

2.Het grote franse talent Roger Rivière duikt in de Tour van 1960 in de afdaling van de onbeduidende Col du Perjuret het ravijn in en komt tien meter lager ongelukkig tot stilstand. Resultaat: voor 80% verlamd. Rivière blijkt een rasechte pechvogel, op 40-jarige leeftijd sterft hij aan strottenhoofdkanker. 

1. In de Tour van ‘51 duikt gele trui drager Wim van Est het ravijn tijdens de afdaling van de Aubisque. Hij wordt, huilend, aan een ketting van fietsbandjes weer omhoog gehesen. Zijn sponsor Pontiac maakt het voorval groot met een advertentiecampagne die een mooie slogan meekrijgt: Vijftig meter viel ik diep, mijn hart stond stil, het was mijn Pontiac die nog liep. Er staat inmiddels een gedenkteken op de bewuste plek.

Volvió de nuevo la sombra del dopaje y lo hizo sobre uno de los ciclistas probablemente más vigilados en los últimos tiempos. Ese no es otro que el murciano Alejandro Valverde, del Caisse d’Epargne.

La semana pasada el periódico italiano “La Gazzetta dello sport” publicó que el ADN del ciclista español coincidiría supuestamente con una de las bolsas incautadas en la Operación Puerto correspondiente al nombre en clave de ‘Valv-Piti’. Ese control antidopaje fue realizado en la etapa del Tour del año pasado que acabó en la cima de Prato Nevoso. Ese es el hilo del que está tirando el CONI (Comité Olímpico Italiano) para implicar al de Las Lumbreras en la trama de dopaje organizada por Eufemiano Fuentes.

El pupilo de Eusebio Unzue siempre se ha declarado inocente y en todo momento ha estado dispuesto a colaborar con la justicia, estando dispuesto incluso a dar una muestra de su ADN para demostrar su limpieza. Que el propio ciclista haya tomado esta conducta puede significar que en realidad no sea un tramposo, pero los análisis que se realicen dictarán sentencia.

Lo primero de todo es ponernos en antecedentes y hablar de la Operación Puerto. Se trata de una investigación llevada a cabo por la Guardia Civil entre febrero y mayo de 2006. Desde febrero se comenzó a investigar sobre las pistas que conducían a personas del mundo del deporte y concretamente del ciclismo como Eufemiano Fuentes (médico de varios equipos ciclistas), Ignacio Labarta (director adjunto del Kelme), José Luís Merino (hematólogo) o Manolo Saiz (director del Liberty) entre otros.
Pasados tres meses se descubrió en Madrid un laboratorio clandestino con numerosas bolsas de sangre congelada y material para su análisis. El veintitrés de mayo se produjeron las detenciones de los anteriormente citados Eufemiano Fuentes, Manolo Saiz, José Luís Merino e Ignacio Labarta. En los registros efectuados se encontraron alrededor de cien bolsas de sangre etiquetadas con claves de ciclistas, anabolizantes, esteroides, hormonas y EPO, además de material para el análisis y centrifugado de sangre y documentos de planificación de entrenamientos.
Desde un principio salieron importantes ciclistas tanto del pelotón nacional (Mancebo, Quique Gutiérrez, Óscar Sevilla, Roberto Heras, Ángel Casero, Joseba Beloki…) y del pelotón internacional (Basso, Ullrich, Scarponi o Tyler

Hamilton). En total hubo 58 ciclistas implicados, la mayoría de ellos del Liberty Seguros y del Kelme Comunidad Valenciana.
¿Por qué no salió el nombre de Alejandro Valverde entre ellos? Había una bolsa, la número dieciocho, en la que se podía leer ‘Valv.Piti’, por lo que todo indicaba a que sería él. Sin embargo en ninguna lista apareció su nombre. Esto quiere decir o que las autoridades y la justicia española son unos ineptos y que no han podido esclarecer todos los hechos o que son unos mentirosos y por algún motivo desconocido no han querido sacar a la luz la implicación de Valverde.

Pero todavía hay más. La Guardia Civil siempre señaló en los informes realizados tras la investigación que solo el 30%

de la trama eran ciclistas y que había importantes deportistas de talla mundial entre ellos tenistas, atletas y futbolistas. ¿Se sabe algo de alguien que no fuera ciclista? La respuesta es no. Es más, el propio Jaime Lissavetzky afirmó en su tiempo que solo había ciclistas involucrados en la Operación Puerto.

Una última cosa que quería añadir es el repentino interés del CONI en cazar a Alejandro Valverde. En el país

transalpino consideran que los españoles nos hemos ido de rositas de esta trama de dopaje y en cambio prestigiosos ciclistas suyos han sido sancionados dos años. ¿Envidia quizás? Yo hasta que no se demuestre lo contrario confío en Alejandro.

In den Prozessen zuvor in Bonn und Hamburg war er nicht persönlich erschienen. Ullrich: “Ich habe mich in diesem Zeitraum keiner unerlaubten Mittel bedient und auch keiner Methoden, die in den Regeln der Verbände verboten sind. Ich habe damit nicht annähernd was im Sinn gehabt.”

Er schien in der Versenkung verschwunden zu sein. Niemand hat mehr ein Wort über ihn gehört, niemand mehr über ihn geschrieben, gelesen, gesehen oder sonst etwas. Aber gestern meldete sich Jan Ullrich mit einem Paukenschlag zurück.

Wer kennt Jan Ullrich nicht? Er hat die Tour de France 1997 zur Überraschung aller gewonnen und eröffnete den ersten deutschen Radsportboom. Durch ihn und Deutsche Telekom wurde der Radsport in Deutschland immer populärer. ARD und ZDF erfreuten sich an ungemein hohen Quoten. Außerdem schien er der einzige Mann der Rad Ikone Lance Armstrong zumindest ansatzweise das Wasser reichen konnte obwohl er ihn (fast) nie besiegen konnte. Dennoch sammelte Ulrich zahlreiche Erfolge wie z.B. Weltmeisterschaften, die olympische Goldmedaille und den Sieg einer Vuelta.

Trotz seines Erfolges leistete sich Jan Ulrich zahlreiche Eskapaden. Er konsumierte Extacy um über eine schwerwiegende Verletzung hinwegzukommen, die ihm den Tour Start versaute und wurde des Doping mit Amphetaminen überführt und vom Radverband gesperrt. Es folgte die Suspendierung bei Telekom, die dazu führte, dass Ullrich noch bei dem einen oder anderen Team sich wiederfand, aber nie zur alten Stärke.

Bereits in der Zeit seines Erfolges gab es immer wieder dunkle Kapitel im Radsport. Bei nahezu jeder Tour de France wurden mehrere Fahrer oder gleich ganze des Dopings überführt. Ein paar Jahre kam es dann zum “Big Boom”. Bei einer Razzia bei Dopingarzt Fuentes wurden mehrere Blutproben sichergestellt. Zahlreiche Fahrer wurden überführt, darunter Tour de France Gewinner und die populärsten Namen der Szene. Eine Welle von Dopinggeständnissen brach hinein und Telekom Legenden wie Udo Bölts oder Erik Zabel gaben Doping, teils unter Drogen zu. Nur ein einziger Radfahrer dieser Zeit wehrte sich wie ein kleines Dorf in Gallien, Jan Ullrich.

Gestern war es also wieder soweit. Jan Ullrich trat vor Gericht. Er verklagte sein ehemaliges Team Coast um ausstehende Gehälter, die ihm verweigert wurden, weil das Team anführte, dass Jan Ullrich zu diesem Zeitpunkt gedopt war. Also war es Zeit für den offensichtlichsten Meineid aller Zeiten! Jan Ullrich dementierte unter Eid den Dopingkonsum.

Das Gericht befand die Aussage von Ullrich glaubwürdig und gestatte ihm die ausstehenden Gehälter zu. Dieses Urteil ist eine Farce. Anzunehmen, dass ein Leistungssportler wie Ullrich ohne Doping in der Lage ist nicht nur mit der gedopten Konkurrenz mitzuhalten sondern sie teilweise auch noch zu dominieren halte ich für gewagt und unlogisch. Darüber hinaus wurde der Drogenkonsum von Ullrich schon einmal öffentlich zugegeben und seine Akte beim Dopingarzt Fuentes sagt auch mehr als genug aus.

Dieses aktuelle Beispiel zeigt mir wieder einmal auf wie dreckig verlogen und verseucht der Radsport ist. Als kleines Kind habe ich mich immer auf die Tour de France gefreut. Radsport ist einfach ein Sport den jeder nachgehen kann und jeder weiß was für eine enorme Leistung die Athleten bringen. Und letztendlich war es doch nur eine Farce.

Die Krönung ist die Rückkehr von Lance Armstrong. Ein Mann, der verweigert alte Blutproben von sich auf Doping untersuchen zu lassen und seine reine Weste zu beweisen obwohl ein positiver Test noch nichtmal Konsequenzen hätte. Offensichtlicher geht es kaum und so jemand bekommt erneut die Chance an den Rundfahrten dieser Welt teilzunehmen und wird als bester Radsportler aller Zeiten in die Analen eingehen?!

Ich find es schade von Ullrich, dass er nicht die Eier hat das Doping zuzustehen. Viele Rennfahrer haben es getan, nur er quält sich damit rum. Dabei hab ich ihn als Person immer respektiert. Er macht einen sehr sympathischen Eindruck und jetzt da er vom Radsport fern ist, könnte er es endlich zugeben. Aber nein, lieber legt er den offensichtlichsten Meineid der deutschen Rechtsprechung ab! Danke schön!

De multă vreme “cel care strigă în pustie” s-a gândit să inagureze o nouă categorie tematică pe acest blog, lucru ce m-a făcut să mă gândesc prea mult obectului formal al acestui blog. Credeam că o rubrică dedicată sportului ar arunca o oarecare aură de neseriozitate asupra articolelor mele de altă factură, iar în contextul în care sunt destul de criticat din anumite părţi, se pare că această concepţie a prevalat asupra dorinţelor de inovaţie. Am ajuns însă la concluzia că “cel care strigă în pustie” îşi poate face auzită vocea şi în deşertul sportului.

Turul Frantei 1999. Etapă de munte cu final în ascensiune la Lourdes/Hautacam. La poalele caţărării doi evadaţi au un avans de aproximativ 20 minute faţă de plutonul favoriţilor. Începe ascensiunea! Zeul vremii nu era ciclist: norii se năpusteau năvalnic pe văile Pirineilor îmbrcând totul în stropi şi umezeală. Aveam 15 ani şi mă uitam pentru prima oară la ciclism. Eram plictisit, nu înţelegeam nimic. Totul părea atât de plictisitor, fără noimă şi îmbrăcat în tristeţe. De ce m-aş uita la un asemenea sport timp de 4,5 ore pe zi? Dar eram incă la perioada în care nu cred că citisem nici 20 de cărţi si preferam să lâncezesc în faţa televizorului frumos colorat decât să mă încumet în descoperirea universurilor scrise cu negru pe alb.

Începea să plouă uşor. Un oarecare Lance Armstrong îşi şterse un strop de apă de pe frunte. După o răsuflare adâncă s-a ridicat din şa şi a început să pedaleze nebuneşte. Avea în ochi acea privire concentrată şi rea necesară unui campion. Nu se uita în spate ci se apăsa mai repede şi mai repede pe pedalele sale. Rămân uluit: câţiva ciclişit încearcă să se ia după el, dar ritmul lui Armstrong este infernal. Mergea ca un Ferrari pe lângă un Logan. Secundele ce îl despărţeau de evadaţi se topeau precum calotele de gheaţă polară sub influenţa încălzirii globale, în timp ce între el şi urmăritori timpul săpa o prăpastie insurmontabilă. Pentru câteva secunde a ratat victoria de etapă, dar atunci Lance Armstrong a îmbrăcat pentru prima dată tricoul galben şi nu l-a mai dat jos timp de 7 ani. După 7 ani s-a hotărât să se lase din ciclism şi a lăsat acest tricou moştenire unor ciclişti nevrednici de el.

Lumea ciclismului este, dintotdeauna, cutremurată de scandaluri ce implică substanţă dopante, transfuzii de sânge etc. De fapt, nu cred că se mai cutremură cineva când aude că ciclistul x s-a dopat. Tacit acceptăm toţi această realitate ca făcând parte din realitatea ciclismului. Personal, când am auzit acum câteva zile că Ricardo Ricco, Leonardo Piepoli şi Emaneulle Sella s-au dopat nu m-am mirat. E ciudat, pe de o parte îi detest pentru faptul că au murdărit o lume care ar trebui să fie curată (dar oare a fost vreodată?), dar pe de altă parte le multumesc că, de la plecarea “Regelui” şi până astăzi au fost primii care au readus spectacolul in ciclism.

Şi acum revenim la tata Lance. Tot discut cu un bun prieten despre el şi ne contrazicem adesea. Miza: s-a dopat sau nu s-a dopat “regele”? Este o întrebare la care probabil nu vom afla niciodată un răspun fără echivoc. Dar, sincer, nici nu vreau să i se găsească un răspuns. Eu consider că trebuie să îi acordăm prezumţia de nevinovâţie, prietenul meu e de acord cu mine dar crede că, pe langă aceasta, trebuie să îi acordăm şi prezumţia de vinovăţie. Are şi el dreptate, deşi încă nu s-a demonstrat nimic. Desigur, zvonuri sunt, dar rămân doar zvonuri pentru că, în momentul în care ar exista probe indubitabile, toţi iar sări în cap lui Lance Armstrong. I-ar sări în cap pentru faptul că a adus spectacolul în ciclism! I-ar sări în cap pentru că a arătat lumii întregi că boala poate fi învinsă! I-ar sări în cap pentru că a lăsat în urmă generaţii de copii care l-au luat ca idol! I-ar sări în cap pentru că atunci când pedalează ne dă senzaţia că nimic nu este imposibil! I-ar sări în cap pentru simplul fapt că a îndrăznit să fie cel mai bun tip de 7 ani la rând.

În cele din urmă, apa prezentului trece şi rămân doar comorile trecutului. Mă întreb, peste vreo 10 ani când copilul meu mă va întreba cine a fost Lance Armstrong, eu ce îi voi răspune? Îi voi spune oare că a fost un ciclist care s-a dopat şi astfel a reuşit să câştige pe nedrept 7 Tururi ale Franţei la rând? Nu cred. Cred că îl voi pune să privească tururile făcute de el şi apoi îi voi cumpăra o bicicletă. Îi voi spune că omul acela a avut cancer şi a reuşit să învingă boala prin tăria voinţei sale. Îi voi spune că văzându-l pe el am început să merg cu bicicleta şi am mers câteva mii bune de km în 4, 5 ani. Ca mine au mai fost şi alţii. Astfel, chiar şi numai pentru acest lucru, ar trebui să-i mulţumim.

Faptul că Armstrong s-a decis să participe din nou în Le Tour cred că va mai face o mână de puşti să se urce pe biciclete în loc să stea la calculator. Mai mult, va participa şi în Giro. Tare mi-e că anul viitor va face figura şi va participa în toate cele trei mari tururi şi le va câştiga pe toate. Atunci nu ne va rămâne decât să ne scoatem pălăria şi să plecăm capul, că s-o fi dopat sau nu….!
