(Series 8, Ep.4) Connor and Imogen, the James Dean and Natalie Wood of Waterloo Road, didn’t

(Series 8, Ep.4) Connor and Imogen, the James Dean and Natalie Wood of Waterloo Road, didn’t have an easy week this week. There’s Connor’s mother (Jane Beale) for starters. Being an alcoholic is one thing – Rose Kelly was an alcoholic but she was fairly charming with it and used to smile a lot – but Jane Beale is a nasty piece of work. I’m not sure if we’re supposed to believe that it’s all the fault of the drink and she’d be a shining example of maternal cuddliness if she was sober, because we haven’t seen her sober yet. She’s perfectly horrible to Connor and was also perfectly horrible to his new girlfriend Imogen. Connor’s go-to strategy for dealing with his mother seems to be arson, and this week it was a bit of fire-setting in the WR basement. Guess who put the fire out? Tom Clarkson, of course. Everybody’s hero. It was Connor who got the blame, which was fair enough because he was to blame, but where’s Pious Kim Campbell when we need her to (a) be on top of arson and (b) spotting a cry for help when she sees one?

But back to the star crossed lovers. Imogen had a secret which she eventually trusted Connor enough to reveal to him. She’s deaf and wears hearing aids. Of course Connor didn’t mind, because he thinks she’s lovely, so that was alright. Imogen had a far bigger problem in the form of her mother, exercise guru to the stars (school owner Lorraine Donnegan, anyway). Not only did she have a dodgy taste in leotards, she also had a borderline dodgy fancy for schoolboys, in the form of Angus. I mean, totes embarrassing!

Meanwhile there was some business about Michael Byrne and his father. Sian was trying to get them reunited, but I still can’t bring myself to give a hoot about Michael Byrne, so I have no idea whether she succeeded or not. I was busy looking at the comments on Twitter, where opinion seemed divided between those who thought Waterloo Road was well past its sell-by date and those who were harbouring rude thoughts about the actors who play Connor and Angus.

Next time: Janeece’s Cheryl gets chickenpox. Frankly that sounds a bit too plausible for Waterloo Road.

(Series 8, Ep.3) I’m getting used to the weird new setting, with its Scottish accents, Tobler

(Series 8, Ep.3) I’m getting used to the weird new setting, with its Scottish accents, Toblerone-shaped school and bizarre boarding house. This means I can now concentrate on the everyday madness that is Waterloo Road.

I have to say I’m a little concerned about Tariq. The poor lad only broke his back at the start of the summer holidays, yet a mere couple of months later he seems to have been left to fend for himself. When his wheelchair rolled off out of reach while he was in the bath, the poor lad had to haul himself out of the tub and ended up lying on the bathroom floor waiting for Grantly to break the lock and come and help him. Added to this indignity the fact that his father isn’t speaking to him, his sister Trudi is in Canada with Finn (awww, bless!), the other sister is too young to understand what he’s going though and the Adorable Josh thinks the way to help is to dish out motivational self-help books, and poor Tariq was feeling like he’d be better off as a memorial tree.

While taking part in kayaking trials (no lifeguards present and a shocking lack of supervision), he upended the boat and attempted to do away with himself in an icy cold loch. Luckily he was within easy worrying reach of Tom Clarkson and Michael Byrne. While Tom stood on the jetty looking tense and shouting, “Tariq!” at regular intervals, Michael Byrne dashed over on a speedboat to the rescue. Michael Byrne needed a bit of positive karma, because it had just come out that he’d apparently beaten up his own father in a callous and dreadful crime. Only it wasn’t, it was a boy at the end of his tether after enduring too many years of his father beating up his mother. At least by the end of the episode Tariq had got himself a new role in life, that of Man of Peace. When the warring factions of Waterloo Road and The Rival School went head to head in an after school scrap, Tariq was on hand to separate them.

Pale And Interesting Connor was still struggling with his mother, vodka-swilling Jane Beale. She’s refusing any kind of help and advice from anyone, including her colleague the pointy-faced lady, who attempted to empathise. “It must be hard bringing up a teenager on your own,” she said. “What would you know?” snarled Jane Beale. She actually is Scottish, you know. At least Pale and Interesting Connor had a bit of a diversion when he got himself a girlfriend, Georgia Taylor-lookalike Imogen.

Next time: Imogen’s birthday and she has a secret she wants to share with Connor, apparently. Maybe she’s going to tell him she’s running away to be a Georgia Taylor tribute act.

(Series 8, Ep.2) I missed episode 1 of the new series of Waterloo Road (apart from the first 10 min

(Series 8, Ep.2) I missed episode 1 of the new series of Waterloo Road (apart from the first 10 minutes) and decided to just dive straight in to episode 2. Frankly, it was like falling down a rabbit hole.

Some of the familiar landmarks were there – Tom Clarkson, Grantly Budgen, The Adorable Josh – but we weren’t in Rochdale anymore, Toto, we were within picturesque shimmering distance of the Clyde. Michael Byrne has always spoken with a Scottish accent, what with being Scottish and that, and I expected a certain amount of Scottishness, but certainly not from Jane Beale out of EastEnders, who’s apparently an alcoholic teacher these days. She’s the mother of an extremely pretty son, Connor, who may be easy on the eye in a pale-eyed, alien-type way, but is more than a tad weird. You can forgive him this, what with the alcoholic mother and everything, plus he is not the strangest kid in the school by a long chalk.

The strangest kid in the school award had to go to Problem Pupil of the Week, the Grace Jones-haired, manically-staring Lula. Turned out she wasn’t mad, or bad, but her uncle thought she was possessed by demons and she’d been pencilled in for an exorcism. This never happened in Rochdale, but you can bet if it had, Tom Clarkson would have sorted it out, like he sorted out poor Lula and her predicament.

This all helped him to get over the guilt he was feeling at the loss of poor Denzil, whose enthusiasm for having his picture taken at the Scottish border had led to him being mown down by a wayward truck (which also put Tariq in a wheelchair). A memorial tree was planted and you had to feel for the absent Rose Kelly – two of her children have now become memorial trees and they’re not even in the same country, never mind the same school playground.

Tom gave a rubbish eulogy, such was the depth of his guilt and grief, and sniffed the blossom of the Denzil Memorial Shrub in a moody fashion, but there wasn’t much time to dwell on the sad loss of such a young life, because he had an exorcism to interrupt and fights were breaking out among various Girls With Grudges.

The whole thing is just a bit weird. “Weird,” is, of course, Waterloo Road’s default setting, but everything looks so different it’s all a bit (more) surreal at the moment. And I haven’t even mentioned the ultra-bizarre boarding house thingy, presided over by Grumpy Grantly and the dinner lady.

Next time: Tariq takes up kayaking, probably too late for this year’s Paralympics, and a secret about Michael is revealed.

Interesting research has shown that households where the television and computers are in regular use

Interesting research has shown that households where the television and computers are in regular use don’t communicate effectively:

Jane Beale, a speech pathologist on the NSW central coast, said previous work focusing on television usage in the US had shown that, in households where TV usage was minimal, about 6000 words per day were spoken by the home’s occupants. That compared with the 500 words spoken in homes where TVs were on for most or all of the day.

“More and more now we have got not only TV and video games, but we have iPhones and iPads, and we have parents spending time on iPhones and iPads rather than engaging directly face-to-face . . . with their child,” Ms Beale said. “Because these devices are so tantalising to children, they are spending long periods of time with these devices if their parents don’t regulate that.”

Other speech pathologists agreed that, while there was as yet no evidence that devices were causing language delays, there was a developing suspicion that a link did exist.

Adelaide speech pathologist Debbie James said she “took a more cautious view” because of the limited evidence, but said there was “pretty clear evidence there’s about 20 per cent of children that have delayed speech and language skills”, compared with other children of the same age.

Her research had found a “strong association between the frequency with which parents speak with their children when they were nine months old, and the child’s language skills two years later”.

The Midtown International Theatre Festival is presenting the world premiere of Correction, a new play by Jane Beale & Ronnie Cohen that begs the question: Are we really who we say we are? Performances are at the Dorothy Strelsin Theatre, 312 W. 36th Street, 1st fl. in New York, Monday, July 30 at 7:30 p.m.; Wednesday, August 1 at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, August 3 at 6 p.m. Tickets are $17 and can be purchased online at www.midtownfestival.org or by calling 1-866-811-4111.

Synopsis:
The New York Times announces that — in a lavish ceremony attended by New York’s Who’s Who, Sheldon, a wealthy philanthropist, marries Jennifer, a successful Park Avenue psychiatrist from a well-bred family and the finest schools. There’s only one problem….Jennifer isn’t any of those things. Inspired by actual events, this dark comedy explores the cult of fame and lengths one woman will go for it.

Filmmaker Richard Atkinson collaborated with Ronnie Cohen and Jane Beale to adapt their play Dogs Lie, into the screenplay for the film starring Samrat Chakrabarti, Frank Boyd and Ewa Da Cruz. The film has garnered numerous awards including an Honorable Mention at the Los Angeles Movie Awards; Best Film USA Award at ITN Distribution Film and New Media Festival, NYC; Audience Award for a Feature Film at the ITN Distribution Film Festival NYC.

JANE BEALE (co-playwright) Jane’s interest in the theater started early, back in her hometown in Ohio, but her writing career began over lunch with long-time friend, Ronnie Cohen. They were moved to write their first play ever based on an incredible item in the NY Times: a new bride was “outted” for lying about her credentials in a splashy wedding announcement. That collaboration became Correction, which had a reading way off-Broadway in 2004. The success of Correction led Jane and Ronnie to write the musical The Street, which won some festival awards and was later produced, off-Broadway. The inspiration for Back Bay Nights was a scary, funny, ultimately successful night Jane spent at a New York sleep clinic. She was there to deal with a marriage-bending snoring problem. She left exhausted, with gummy fixative in her hair and funny stories for her writing partner Ronnie. While Jane was still recovering from the experience, Ronnie had gone into plot and character overdrive. This story was too good not to exploit. So the one-act play, Dogs Lie, was conceived. It was a big hit at the Midtown International Theater Festival, won some awards and was granted 6 additional productions. Jane’s husband missed a performance to attend a Leed’s University alumni gathering, and there met Richard Atkinson of Top Movie films. The rest, as they say, was history and Richard executive-produced and directed the film version of Dogs Lie. There are several other projects on the table for Jane and Ronnie, and they look forward to continued collaboration.

RONNIE COHEN (co-playwright) Ronnie and her co-writer Jane Beale have been friends for over two decades. They first met in Boston where they were working for the same crazy ad agency and living around the corner from one another in Back Bay. They started writing together in 2004. Their first comedy, Correction, about a fancy Park Avenue couple who lie about everything, became a Finalist in the Siena College International Playwright’s competition in 2005. The screenplay version of Correction was recently selected as a finalist in the Beverly Hill Film Festival, 2012. Their next comedy, Getting Into Harvard (Country Day), morphed into the musical, The Street, which Ronnie wrote and produced in 2007. The Street is about two women who take on the big guns of Wall Street. It won 6 “best of” nominations including best musical and best lyrics/score, which Ronnie had also written, from the MITF. Following, Ronnie & Jane wrote a short one-act play, Dogs Lie, which had its first showing July 2009 followed by a longer repertory run in November. It was then picked up by Richard Atkinson for Top Movie and Ronnie & Jane found themselves writing the screenplay for Dogs Lie. Dogs Lie made its way through several film festivals including LA Femme, Filmi in Toronto, The Big Apple, ITN and others winning several awards including BEST FILM USA (!) It has been released into distribution by Vanguard and available from Amazon.com. Currently, Ronnie and Jane are working on Witnessed By The World, a thriller about Jack Ruby and a team of screenwriters who get caught up in his story. In their spare time, they write tv comedies, such as, “Back Bay Nights”, which they recently pitched in Los Angeles.

Before arriving at the party, Atkinson caught up with Samrat Chakrabarti, who was en route to attend the screening of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, to hand deliver his “hot off the presses” DVD of Dogs Lie. Chakrabarti plays Iqbal Khani, a likeable, conscientious clinician and romantic opportunist in the film.

Frank Boyd, who stars opposite Chakrabarti as Josh Logan, a clinician who is a compulsive jokester with a competitive streak, can currently be seen at The Public Theater in Elevator Repair Service’s GATZ, the award-winning, critically lauded theatrical adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, which has been extended through May 13.
Boyd is also a company member of the TEAM, the Theatre of the Emerging American Moment. The New York City based theater company dedicated to dissecting and celebrating the experience of living in America today, is holding its Hunka Hunka Burnin Benefit on May 10, at the New York City Fire Museum, 278 Spring St. in New York.
In Dogs Lie, Boyd and Chakrabarti play clinicians thrown together with eight patients at a luxury NY sleep clinic for a night of monitoring and observation. They are both drawn to the beautiful Lucia ( Ewa Da Cruz), a patient, who finds herself the center of attention as her life seemingly spins out of control. Nothing is quite as it seems, and as the night progresses dark secrets are revealed. Romance, blackmail and murder ensue as humor and irreverence give way to devious self interest.

EastEnders star Laurie Brett has joined Waterloo Road in the role of Christine Mulgrew, after leaving the show that made her a household name when her character Jane Beale left Albert Square.

Laurie will play Scottish character Christine Mulgrew (Picture: BBC)

EastEnders actress Laurie, who will take part in the Let’s Dance For Sport Relief final this weekend, is set to take on the new role after her character Jane Beale left Walford following her split with husband Ian.

The 41-year-old has now been announced as the latest addition to the Waterloo Road cast, taking up the role of Christine Mulgrew, a Scottish-born English teacher appointed by headteacher Michael Byrne when he sets up the new school in series eight of the BBC1 show.

It will give Brett, who was born in Hamilton, Scotland, the chance to act in her native accent and the actress said she was ‘thrilled’ to be joining Waterloo Road.

‘The character I will be playing is such a complex woman, with many issues, and it will be a real departure from what people are used to seeing me do.

‘Not least because for the first time in my career I will be working in my native accent, which I am really excited about.

VIDEO: Watch Laurie speak in her Scottish accent here

Her character Christine is an exciting addition and will ensure that Waterloo Road makes some noise as it lands on Scottish turf.’

A shock result on the first episode of Let’s Dance For Sport Relief saw comedian Terry Alderto

A shock result on the first episode of Let’s Dance For Sport Relief saw comedian Terry Alderton and DJs
Tony Blackburn and David Hamilton voted into the bottom two, with the judges choosing in Terry’s favour.

Tony Blackburn and David Hamilton were compared to Jedward after their dance (Picture: PA/BBC)

The launch of Let’s Dance For Sport Relief saw an array of stars come together to make a fool of themselves for charity, as presenters Alex Jones and Steve Jones drummed up support for this year’s Sport Relief campaign.

David, Tony and Terry were up against EastEnders actresses Tameka Empson (Kim Fox) and Laurie Brett (Jane Beale), Shooting Stars faces Ulrika Jonsson and Angelos Epithemious and cricket star Darren Gough , who is a former winner of Strictly Come Dancing.

The EastEnders girls impressed the audiences at home with their unique interpretation of Beyonce and Lady Gaga’s Telephone and won the public vote, meaning they performed again at the end of the night.

Terry Alderton filled the cross-dressing quote on the show (Picture: PA/BBC)

But Darren was the first to be eliminated from the competition, after failing to capture the imagination of the audience with his skilled, but not very funny, dance to a song from West Side Story.

Ulrika and her sidekick Angelos were next to leave, having proved unpopular with the audience at home after their saucy tango.

Finally, the judges were forced to choose between Terry and the aging DJs, whom many viewers were shocked to see at risk of elimination after their respective performances of Proud Mary by Tina Turner and Push It by Salt N Pepa.

Darren Gough failed to impress with his West Side Story performance (Picture: PA/BBC)

Eventually, after judges Graham Norton and Greg Davies had failed to reach a unanimous decision, Keith Lemon was faced with the final choice.

In the words of Steve Jones, the decision had been ‘left in the hands of an insane person’.

Keith voted to send Tony and David home, meaning Terry was sent through to the final in March, where he will be competing with Laurie and Tameka, as well as the winners of the intervening weeks’ Let’s Dance For Sport Relief.

Live TV blog: On last night’s EastEnders Phil had an argument with his son after Ben was found to have wooed Heather by posing as ‘Kevin68′ on an internet dating site, meanwhile Abi dumped Jay for his part in the plot and Mercy and Fatboy’s relationship didn’t look so fake as the pair shared a kiss. We’ll have all of tonight’s action covered below…

EastEnders, BBC One.

Welcome to our live TV blog, where we’ll be following all the fall-outs and love-ins as they happen in tonight’s EastEnders.Commentbelow, tweetus @metro_ents and enjoy the show…

Opening scene: Ian Beale in a bathrobe! Ew!

1 min:And now Alfie Moon in a rather fetching red bathrobe! An eye-popping start to EastEnders.

1 min: Jack Branning mopes about on the sofa like a sad panda, before getting an angry call from Michael who wants him to come back to work.

2 mins:Michael refers to Ronnie’s storyline as ‘baby swap nonsense’, glad someone on the Square realised how ridiculous it was!

3 mins:Masood plans a ‘boy’s night out’ with Tamwar (lads!), sadly Tamwar says he would rather see ‘a film about a data analyst’s relationship with clouds’ at the cinema. Hmm.

5 mins:With testosterone in the air tonight Ian and Ben also want a ‘boys night’, forcing Jane out the house.

6 mins:Phil tells Shirley ‘i’m going to Fight Night, don’t wait up!’ and slams the door. Phil seems back to his old self after that unfortunate crack cocaine binge.

9 mins:Heather finds out that Ben’s online antics were really a cry for help and apologises for flying off the handle at him.

11 mins:Ben prepares to leave the Square, hopefully Old Ben will be rescued from the parallel universe they’ve been keeping him in and will return to EastEnders.

@Sir_Jack_Russel: ‘Who set fire to Shirley’s face and put it out wiv a bleedin’ shovel ? Arf, arf Eastenders’

14 mins:EastEnders’ fake boxing announcer has gone cliche mad. Next up in the ring is ‘Mick the Mincer’.

Who are you and what have you done with the real Ben!
17 mins:All the Square’s men seem to be having a rollicking good time at ‘Fight Night’. Yusef, Masood, Tamwar, Phil, Jack, Michael, Alfie and Max all in attendance.

18 mins:While the men shout ‘go on!’ and ‘hit ‘im!’ sporadically, the girls (and Fatboy) party at the club.

19 mins:A desperate Jane comes on to Fatboy. Yes, that just happened. Fatboy resists her advances saying he loves Mercy.

20 mins:Ben says a quick farewell to Jay as he prepares to depart..

20 mins:Ian gets on Phil’s bad side at Fight Night mocking his parenting skills, Phil punches him square in the face for at least the 586th time.

22 mins:Jane bumps into Masood in the street after leaving the club, asks him ‘who would want a frumpy 40-year-old divorcee?’ It seems Masood could be that very guy…

@sirjimmyc: ‘If Jane Beale is on the prowl then I’m game. #eastenders’

If you say so Sir Jimmy…

EastEnders’ Yusef Khan is set to turn ‘very nasty and very manipulative’, as he continues his efforts to ruin the life of love rival Masood Ahmed.

Yusef Khan is set to step up his efforts to ruin Masood Ahmed’s life and win back ex Zainab in EastEnders (Pic: BBC)

The deceptive doctor, played by Ace Bhatti in the BBC soap, is currently trying to rekindle his romance with ex-wife Zainab Masood, played by Nina Wadia.

But while Zainab and Masood’s marriage is already looking shaky, Yusef is about to turn nasty in his attempt to shut out his love rival.

Nitin Ganatra, who plays Masood, told Holy Soap: ‘He throws a real spanner in the works for Masood. It’s horrible, it’s very manipulative and very nasty. He is doing everything he can to wreck Masood’s life, really, and the way you do that is to get to his family.

‘It’s a very clever way of doing things – it’s not about destroying his family, it’s about winning his family and turning them against him, so that Masood is left isolated and on his own. Masood is the one guy who is the glue for the family. His sense of humour is what keeps the family together.’

Masood also has another reason to fear Yusef when he declares his love for friend Jane Beale.

While ultimately Masood decides he wants to try and save his marriage, his love rival is watching the shocking confession.

Ben Mitchell is now the favourite to be unveiled as
Archie Mitchell’s killer in tonight’s live episode of EastEnders after a flurry of bets.

Did Ben Mitchell kill Archie in Eastenders?

Bookies have slashed the odds to 11/4 that the youngster (Charlie Jones) did the dirty deed even though Ben stopped dad Phil from murdering Archie last year.

Yesterday’s favourite Sean Slater (Rob Kazinsky) follows closely behind at 7/2.

Jean Slater has odds of 5/1 while Becca Swanson comes next at 6/1.

Ronnie Mitchell’s first love Joel Reynolds is also in the running after one gambler placed a large bet on the character at 33/1.

Since the bet, William Hill have slashed his odds to 7/1.

Dot Branning, Heather Trott, Minty Peterson and Ian and Jane Beale all have odds of 100/1 making them the main outsiders.

Here is a scene from tonight’s EastEnders. Tanya (Jo Joyner) and Jane (Laurie Brett) are refused entry to an 80′s party at R&R’s so decide to sing Bananarama while walking down Bridge Street. Ian (Adam Woodyatt) then tells Jane that she is grounded because of her appalling behaviour. Acting drunk isn’t easy but these two seem to pull it off! These clips are just feeding my obsession with the show…

EastEnders viewers are apparently set to discover that Steven Beale is behind the disappearence of his half sister Lucy – and he will attempt to kill Pat Evans when she discovers what he has been up to.

The twisted youngster, who is due to be written out of the soap at the end of May, reportedly smothers his gran, played by Pam St Clement, with a pillow while she is lying in a hospital bed.

Will Steven Beale try to kill Pat St Clement’s character?

Steven, played by Aaron Sidwell, helped Lucy (Melissa Suffield) run away to a remote caravan and then watched her distraught family try to find her, according to the Daily Star.

But Pat apparently rumbles what was going on when she finds Lucy’s passport stashed in Steven’s bag.

And in dramatic scenes, viewers will reportedly see Pat mowed down by Roxy Mitchell (Rita Simons) as she rushes to tell Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt) about her discovery.

A soap insider told the newspaper: “Steven has just been playing at being sane – really he’s as mixed up as ever and this just proves it.

“He’s fully prepared to murder his own gran, the one person who stuck by him after he shot Jane Beale.”

Steven reportedly sits at Pat’s bedside and whispers to his grand mother “I’m sorry Nana Pat. I never meant for this to happen, I never meant it to come to this,” before holding a pillow over her face.

EastEnders bosses have apparently created a new gay character to be introduced in the New Year.

The new character is Jane Beale’s brother who arrives to stir up a bit of bother among the residents, says the Daily Mirror.

Eastenders is set to get a new gay character

“The bosses at EastEnders have seen how well Antony Cotton does as Sean in Corrie,” a source told the paper.

The source added: “He’s become incredibly popular with viewers so they’ve decided it’s time to have a gay character of their own.”

“However, he’s not going to be as camp as Sean,” they continued. “This guy’s going to be very suave and a real charmer.”

It’s not the first time a gay character has walked the streets of Walford. Previous gay residents of Albert Square include Barry and Colin, Tony and Simon – who had a controversial kiss on Blackpool pier – and more recently, Doctor Fonseca.
