Another pretty lame survey but whatever, you’ll be surprised with the results

On the 2nd on KBS 2TV’s Chuseok special ‘Big Star X File’, different rankings of stars were shown through a survey that was performed.
Yoo Jae Suk remained the #1 spot and had no change in position. Though he got married, his popularity is still soaring (what did I tell you?).

The male stars, Lee Seung Gi, So Ji Sub, and Jang Dong Gun took the #1 spot as the mascots of Korea’s handsome men.

But there were also #1 spots of shame. Jung Hyung Don took the #1 spot as the male star who wouldn’t work on Chuseok and goof around all day, and Park Hee Soon took the #1 position as the person most likely to spend their Chuseok at home alone.

I have to say I haven’t been keeping up-to-date with trot releases lately, so I thought I’d share some karaoke/ sing-along videos instead.

Some of these have quite lousy quality, but I’ll upload them if anyone is interested. Or if you’d like a karaoke video of another trot song feel free to ask and I’ll try and sub it.

Anyone else looking forward to the new upcoming SBS talk show Strong Heart (Kang Shim Jang)?

Its hosts are none other than super-popular MC Kang Ho Dong, and super-popular singer/actor/variety show entertainer Lee Seung Gi. Its first episode was taped on the 24th, and will broadcast on October 6th at 11:05 p.m. This first episode had a grand whopping total of 24 guests, and revolves around the idea of its guests engaging in a “talk battle”.

Some of those guests include:

Boom, Yoon Ah (of SNSD), Kim Tae Woo, Baek Ji Young, Seung Ri (of Big Bang), G-Dragon (also of Big Bang), Han Sung Ju, Han Min Kwan, Nancy Lang, Solbi, Ahn Young Mi, Kim Hyo Jin, Moon Jung Hee, Kim Young Ho, MC Mong, Jang Yoon Jung, Yoo Sae Yoon and all three members of Epik High.

They also held a red carpet event to commemorate the first recording (pics can be found behind the cut).

I dunno about the format – 24 guests seem a bit much, and reminds me of Star Golden Bell. How can they get anything really substantial out of their guests when they have so many to concentrate on? Still, I love Kang Ho Dong and have faith in his emceeing abilities (especially when it comes to talk shows), while Lee Seung Gi is just a cutie pie (although I dunno if he was the best choice for co-MC). Besides, I was feeling sad over the cancellation of Ya Shim Man Man Season 2, and this helps to soothe those feelings a bit.

Singer Lee Seung Gi will be an MC on SBS’s new entertainment program Kang Shim Jang (Strong Heart).

Lee Seung Gi, who was a regular on KBS 2 TV’s “One Night, Two Days”, will solidify his presence in the entertainment world by being a MC on “Kang Shim Jang”. Popular as “Easily confused Seung Gi” on “One Night, Two Days”, expectations are high as to what he will contribute to “Kang Shim Jang.”

Lee Seung Gi will be the main MC along with Kang Ho Dong. This is his first MC debut, and Lee Seung Gi will bring even more anticipation for “Kang Shim Jang” and show new talent.

Lee Seung Gi is preparing for his debut as a MC. His synergy with Kang Ho Dong, who also was a regular on “One Night, Two Days”, will be a huge source of anticipation.

SBS’s “Kang Shim Jang” will have 25 people representing Korea or Korean celebrities. They will share revealing stories and the one who lasts until the end will be the ultimate “Strong Heart.”

Big Bang leader G-Dragon and member SeungRi will be appearing for the telerecording to 1st episode of SBS new variety show ‘KangShimJang (Strong Heart)’ on 24th September.

By the title of the show, the show will follow a concept to find out which of the 20+ guests has the strongest heart and tells the most revealing stories through the talkshow section.

“2009 Mnet 20’s Choice” will be held on 28th August. This event is being held to grace the choices of the 20s generation on their true trend / cultural setter icons. The event highlights include awards ceremony, blue carpet ceremony and exceptional perfomances. Some of the awards are freshly introduced this year.

The final results will be based on 50% from survey ratings from the 20s generation and 50% on the polling outcome. “2009 Mnet 20’s Choice” will be held live from 5pm to 10pm at Jamsil Indoor Stadium on 28th August.

This was predicted. Imagine how much Super Junior and SNSD make, if DBSK only get 10-30% of profits (which then gets divided AGAIN within the 5 members). SuJu has 13 members for godsakes! They really don’t make much despite it all. Same with SNSD. SM is really raking it in…can’t believe SM tried to make SuJu pay for their own stylist. I’m sure SuJu really don’t make much!

As DBSK dispute continues downhill, the music industry has begun supervising their own. The possibility of a 2nd or 3rd DBSK dispute is causing a crisis in the music industry.

Seeing the members they once created and nurtured to be top Asian singers, now fighting with their company is a bitter sight to see for the middle management executives. However, as Xiah Junsu and other members have revealed the unjust contract conditions, some are saying that this is the time to self-exam and improve. How is the contract conditions for groups other than DBSK.

Super Junior, Girl’s Generation, longest contract is 13 years

Other idol groups in SM entertainment is being targeted first. It was reported that for Super Junior, Girl’s Generation, and Shinee, contracts are different for each members but the contract periods are anywhere from 5 years to 13 years.

Because some members of Super Junior and Girl’s Generation have different debut years, their contract is individual.
Before Kangin became a member of Super Junior, he was a VJ for a entertainment news program. Before the release of Girl’s generation album in 2007, member Sooyoung made debut in a duo ‘Route Oh” in 2002 under SM Japan so she signed a contract before the other members. Because the contracts are individual, earning distributions and schedule conditions are different for each member.

One Super Junior member spoke with IS on the phone stating, “even if I want to move to another company, the remaining terms of the contract and penalty for breaching the contract is far beyond than people imagine. Because we have a lot of members in our team, we have to divide our earnings into 1/13, so we do not make much money. Up until recently, SM tried to make it our responsibility to pay for our stylist but a senior member took courage and corrected it. There are feelings in the company that if you do something that the company doesn’t like, it is only your loss so even if we have complaints, we can’t express it well.”

It was reported that they had a meeting with each other after the DBSK dispute became a controversy.

Music producers state “they don’t even know the situations”

Another artist under SM Entertainment stated with affliction, “DBSK sunbae’s dispute is bitter to watch because it seems it our future is being shown. Trurthfully, there are too many things on my mind that I can’t concentrate when I’m performing on stage or doing other broadcasting schedules.”

For one group of singers under an entertainment company, although earning distributions are clear and there is strong confidence between the company, they signed a contract period for almost 10 years and are anxious that this might spark something in their way.

Jang Yoon jung and Park Hyun Bin also signed 10 year contract with their company and although Jewelry members have different contracts, members have been working under the same company for over 8 years. They stated that the problem is mutual distrust, not the contract period.

As the long period contracts are arising as a problem, music industry producers respond that they don’t even know what the situation is like. They stated that as singers debut younger and younger, it is becoming normal to start training elementary school kids and if companies continued to meet the demands of its artists, the company would not be able to survive.

One entertainment company president stated, “I am paying attention to how the provisional disposition will be ruled. I feel like singers do not consider the company’s perspective and are only considering these situations once they have become famous. I hope this will be an opportunity to eliminate troubles between singers and companies.”

Yes, it’s really free. But don’t be fooled by the shabby poster because lots of big artists are lined up for the event!

TBS, the traffic broadcasting station, will be holding a free “2009 TBS Happy Concert Seoul” on August 22nd at 7:30 PM. The concert line up of artists is simply off the hook. Those in Korea will be able to see 2PM, FT Island, MC Mong, Davichi, Brown Eyed Girls, Crying Nut, Tiger JK, T (Tasha), T-Max, Jang Yoon-jung, Boo-hwal, Song Chang-sik and Sim Soo-bong for no cost at all. However, those that want to attend the concert will be responsible for visiting the TBS website and requesting tickets.

Even though this is a free event, no ticket means no entrance. A whopping 40,000 tickets are available, so get your tickets before they’re all gone! Why can’t they have free events like this is America?!

There hasn’t been a lot of big news that’s interested me personally lately, but there have been quite a few little snippets that I figured I could talk about. So here we go.

• Popular boyband DBSK leader U-Know Yunho has been cast as the lead of the soccer drama Heading Into The Ground (which had originally cast Kim Rae Won, but had to scramble for another lead actor after he gave up the role to go to the army). His co-star is Go Ara, who was last seen in Who Are You?. They held their first script reading recently, and people were excited, and stuff. Aaaand this casting news confirmed that I won’t be touching this drama with a ten-foot pole. Were they really so desperate for a male lead that they had to settle for someone with popularity but no real acting experience? What an enormous step down from Kim Rae Won! What is this world coming to?
• Speaking of DBSK, three of its five members, Micky Yoochun, Xiah Junsu and Hero Jaejoong, have decided to file a lawsuit against their entertainment company, SM Entertainment, for unfair treatment of its stars. This means that DBSK just might break up, and fans are going batshit insane. It is literally all over the news, which is the only reason I’m writing about it. Also, the collective anger of DBSK’s fanbase is mind-boggling to behold.
• Clazziquai recently held a fansigning event along with the release of their album “Mucho Punk” (which I’m surprisingly enjoying, by the way), and folks were surprised to see a big bunch of Japanese fans come specifically for the event. Hallyu, and all that. …Yeah.
• New SBS weekend drama Style, starring Lee Ji Ah, Kim Hye Soo and Ryu Shi Won, has aired its first episode, and drawn in pretty impressive ratings of 17.6%. And I’m sure a lot of that success is due to the immense popularity of the drama that aired in the same timeslot before it, Brilliant Legacy. Now whether that success will last is a bigger question.
• Rumours have been flying that star couple Noh Hong Chul and Jang Yoon Jung are planning an October wedding, thanks to Noh Hong Chul making a joke on a program where he suggested October as a wedding date. They’ve both denied that any wedding plans are in the works, and stress that they were simply joking. Besides, they’ve only been dating a few months. Why so serious, netizens?
• Singer-turned-actress Eugene admitted on a variety program recently that she once embarrassed herself dearly in front of both Song Seung Hun and So Ji Sub. She encountered the two men at a health club, and after nodding their greetings, she hopped on a running machine to exercise. But she was so concerned with looking good that she ended up falling off the running machine and landing on the ground directly in front of them (they had been exercising behind her). Haha! Can’t say I blame her. If So Ji Sub was standing in front of me, I’d probably make a fool out of myself, too.
• Last but certainly not least: Actor Lee Min Ki is making an official debut as a singer! No surprise for anyone who’s been following his activities for the past year or so. He’s releasing a mini album in August, which contains eight tracks produced by French artists. The genre is described as a mix of eletronica and rock, and he’ll be playing some instruments as well as singing. He also filmed some music videos, to also be released in August, and is planning on some live performances. So it looks like this’ll be a busy summer for him, what with the theatrical releases of two of his movies, the blockbuster Haeundae (which is doing very well), and the survival thriller A Million (which he’ll be promoting along with Shin Mina in Monday’s episode of the talk show Come To Play). Hurrah! Can’t wait to see more of Minki – there’s been talk that he did very well in A Million, so I’m eager to see how he’s progressed as an actor. It’s been far too long!

According to an unidentified Korean music producer, “Other than idols and trot singers, nothing else makes money now. We can thus only concentrate our efforts on areas that make money.” That pretty much sums up the present state of the Korean music industry in recent years.

The Korean music scene has been enveloped by a sweeping wave of “idol mania” in recent years which shows no sign of slowing down at all. It all started with Big Bang about 2 – 3 years ago and this was followed by groups like Wonder Girls, Girls’ Generation, SHINee, 2PM, Kara, etc as they continued to be red hot and coming to a point where there’s no return. This has continued in 2009 with female groups like 2NE1 and 4minute who have become really popular in a short period of time and further strengthening the market’s belief that “idols will bring in the money”.

Music labels/companies are thus on their toes to unload their own idol groups if they haven’t got one, in order to keep up with the market demand. DSP Entertainment who boasts of SS501 and Kara are preparing to unleash a new female group while JYP Entertainment and Cube Entertainment are preparing to release a new 3 member female and male group respectively as well. There are likely to be more.

O the other hand, the trot world has not been spared either with many new acts debuting even though they are the complete opposite of idol groups. Trot used to be performed by middle-aged singers but the trend is gradually shifting thanks to the popularity of young trot singers like Jang Yoon Jung, Park Hyun Bin, etc which is a strange phenomenon to many. Just this year alone, we have a 3 member male trot group, 3Chongsa (3 Musketeers), LPG 2nd generation, Rani (Jang Young Ran), etc.

The problem becomes more apparent as everyone does the same genre of music and the market becomes oversaturated, creating a situation where only the best survives while the rest feed on scraps and eventually get eliminated. A DSP Entertainment representative expressed, “H.O.T and Sechs Kies bought about an idol mania back in the late 90s as they became really popular. Many companies tried to feed on the mania, and hastily aseembled their singers and groups to get a share of the pie. But inevitably, most of the companies go bankrupt and everything returned to normal.”

Jang Yoon Jung’s management expressed, “It’s something to be happy about to see so many newbies debuting as trot singers but they do not foresee the problems. Most of the time, trot singers have to perform in adverse conditions. Many of them do not understand that and only have the idea of making big money as a trot singer. Most of them just give up in the end. You have to be mentally prepared if you are entering the trot world.”
