Sick Child in CPS Custody Dies

HOUSTON – All the little dresses and sweaters Chanel Hall bought for her only daughter will never be worn. All the toys will never be opened. Even a huge closet can’t hold all the “what if’s” that haunt the grieving mother.

“Of what things could have been and would have been for Jasmine,” Hall said.

Hall didn’t get much time with Jasmine. Soon after her medically fragile child was born, Children’s Protective Services took custody of her.

In an ironic twist of fate CPS takes Jamine away from her mother due to medical neglect, then Jasmine dies because her state appointed care giver is allegedly neglectful in her duties.

“It’s appalling, it’s more than ironic it’s shocking,” said Amira Jackmon, Hall’s niece and attorney.

“This wasn’t a mother who abused her child, neglected her child, this is a mother who had a disagreement with the hospital,” Jackmon said.

Jasmine was born premature which caused several medical problems.

“She had water on the brain and blood on the brain at one point,” Hall said.

The hospital contacted CPS because Hall wouldn’t consent to a tracheostomy for Jasmine.

“I never said no to the surgery,” Hall said. “I just asked for a second opinion and that was all.”

But Hall’s refusal to consent to the surgery quick enough to please the hospital prompted CPS to take custody of Jasmine. According to a lawsuit filed by Hall, CPS told the court Jasmine needed the surgery immediately.

“Or else there was a huge risk to Jasmine,” Jackmon said. “Then why did they wait two or three weeks to perform it?”

With a tracheal tube attached to her throat, CPS said Jasmine needed 24 hour medical care so she was placed in a foster home operated by a company called Lutheran Social Services of the South.

On July 16th Jasmine died and according to CPS documents her death could have been avoided. That document states the caregiver admitted she was documenting paperwork while the child was playing therefore she was unaware if the child pulled the tracheal tube out of her neck and she was unaware when the tracheal tube actually came out.

“Jasmine was suppose to be under 24 hour supervision, if she was doing paperwork she should have been in the same room as Jasmine,” Hall said.

CPS declined an on-camera interview or comment citing the lawsuit Hall has filed against them as well as Lutheran Social Services, which closed the foster home it operated here in Houston shortly after Jasmine’s death.

A spokesperson for Lutheran Social Services also declined comment.

“She was my last baby and my only daughter,” Hall said.

All she has now Hall said is a closet full of dresses with no little girl to wear them.

I smell things. Most things, in fact. If I’m eating something new, guaranteed I’m going to sniff it before I put it in my mouth. I smell people too. And yes, I will judge you based on that smell. The same goes for houses, laundry, cars, pets, new electronics, locker rooms…I always inhale.

The following are my top 10 smells. I defy you to come up with a superior list.

1. Toast.

2. Hot asphalt that has been sprayed with a hose. Preferably in the summer, preferably while washing your car and listening to classic rock.*

*It’s my list. I’ll be as specific as I want.

3. Rain.

4. Grass; this includes freshly-cut grass as well as wild grass that has been baking under the sun all day.

5. Any baked good containing apples.

6. Jasmine.

7. Men’s deodorant.

8. Woodsmoke.

9. Books, whether a fresh new paperback or an old, crinkly-paged novel I found at a used book store. They just smell interesting.

10. Sunscreen. So. Damn. Nostalgic.

My maternal grandfather made my grandmother a cedar chest when they were fifteen years old. He had the interior quilted and lined at a funeral parlor which I find both fascinating and macabre. (Where else would you have that sort of thing done I wonder?) Both of my grandparents are dead now, all of them are actually, or should I say they have “passed on”? My eight year old son asked me recently what “passed away” means. After I told him he said that it seems like a more peaceful way to say “dead”. I guess euphemisms aren’t as insubstantial as I had allowed myself to believe.

The faint smell of cedar lingers when you open the chest, and I can only imagine how potent it was eighty years ago. Lifting the lid used to reveal the dusty rose colored layers of remaining fabric that blended seamlessly with the wood’s pinkish tones. The satiny quilted lining became increasingly tattered and has since been removed as my mom had the chest refurbished many years ago. The restoration has created a new chest in appearance, but it still holds many memories, both cherished and painful.

When I first sprayed Siberian Snow on my skin, I immediately thought of my grandmother’s handmade treasury. Not that the perfume smells exactly like the chest, more like what I want my fragrance memory to be of the chest; cedar, wintergreen and jasmine. The D.S. & Durga website has frankincense listed rather than cedar, but you could have fooled me. Cedar it is in my mind.

Wintergreen opens the fragrance and remains an undercurrent throughout the Siberian Snow experience. The mintiness has a multi-layered effect that was unexpected and intriguing. Initially the wintergreen was enlivening, and then evolved into a familiar, comfortable feeling. My dad loved to have WintOGreen LifeSavers at the ready when my sister and I were growing up, which probably explains my nostalgia for the wintergreen scent. But it also added a quirkiness to the otherwise traditional woody floral composition of jasmine and cedar. (I mean, frankincense). The wintergreen used in Siberian Snow has an attenuated bitterness that tames jasmine’s floral lushness and gives the woody aspect depth and interest so it’s not thin and reedy.

It seems almost meaningless to call a perfume a “woody floral” these days. There are so many out there that they all begin to smell alike. I can assure you that when I say Siberian Snow is an “interesting woody floral” I’m not using that as a euphemism for “it’s just a little better than average”. D.S. and Durga, the creators of their eponymous line, have truly created an interesting woody floral perfume. Not every fragrance is 100% all-natural, but Siberian Snow is, along with Rosa Americana and Cowgirl Grass. And for men, Cowboy Grass, Barbados and Marblehead Reds.

I’m claiming Siberian Snow as my new favorite all-natural cedar fragrance, and D.S. and Durga can rib me a bit if it turns out that there really is no cedar in there after all. It doesn’t matter. My grandmother’s chest has been restored, my son has taught me to embrace euphemisms, and I publish perfume reviews even if I don’t get the notes right.

Oh, Ladytron.

The way that I found you was actually pretty amazing. I was wondering about my boss’s office at The Mariners’ Museum and I saw a cd. It was a very amazing looking cd, as it was one of those file cds. So I asked her if I could borrow it and she obliged.  I then proceeded to take the cd home and put it onto my computer. It was composed of various mp3s with artists such as Devendra Banhart, The Posies, Bloc Party and Ladytron on it. I put it onto my mp3 player.

At first, I didn’t like Ladytron. It was until I actually listened, and I mean really listened. I analyzed every sing note in their album 604. I came to conclude eventually that Ladytron was the shit. No doubts about it. 

What I like about them the most is their use of synth. I really love synth, but not the way that I love Ladytron’s use of it. It gives me chills. It is just so…so..good-sounding to my ears, for lack of a better description, haha.  It isn’t too complicated sounding either, and I like that. It seems as though they really don’t have to try to make a great song. They just repeat the same chord progression over and over again. A good example of this is in their song “Paco!”. It’s just the same thing over and over again, and it’s not annoying at all. It just flows.

You have just met my new secret weapon. It’s so good, I’m almost tempted to not share, but that wouldn’t be very nice because then you wouldn’t be able to make Jeff’s favorite meal of the decade, and if you want anything done around the house, you need this.

This is not just rice. This is short grain brown rice cooked with cardamom pods as is done to basmati in Indian cooking. This is cumin and coriander seeds dry toasted with jasmine rice then steamed to perfection. This is incredible rice two ways, and the flavors imparted with the Chipotle Mock Duck are to-die-for-delicious! Try it with black beans for a killer “Burrito Bowl.”

Brown Rice with Cardamom

• 2 cups short grain brown rice
• 5 whole cardamom pods
• 1/2 tsp. salt
• 3 1/2 cups water

Directions: Rinse the brown rice in a colander until the water runs clear. Put the rice, water, cardamom and salt in a rice cooker or stovetop pan. Cook on a low simmer until all water is absorbed, about 45 minutes. Remove cardamom pods and fluff the rice with a fork.

Cumin and Coriander Toasted Jasmine

• 1/2 tsp. cumin seed
• 1/2 tsp. coriander seed
• 2 cups jasmine rice
• 1/2 tsp. salt
• 3 1/2 cups water

Directions: Rinse the rice in a colander under running water until the water runs clear. Next place the spices in a dry pan over medium heat. Toast them until they begin to brown and then add the rice. Toast together for a minute and then add the water. Bring it to a boil over high heat. As soon as it begins to boil, turn the heat down to a simmer. Make sure the pan is tightly covered. Cook in a simmer until the water is absorbed, about 10 minutes. This can also be prepared in a rice cooker. Fluff with a fork to mix in the seeds and serve.

Erica and Matt’s Wedding Day.

What an amazing wedding day at Hawk’s View Golf Club in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.   The early morning was overcast, crisp and cold–with a very few snowflakes spotted in the air.  Who would have thought that would happen in early October?

The Venue—Hawk’s View Golf Club, a log, lodge-esk building surrounded by glorious grounds, and the hillscape of Lake Geneva–spectacular in the colors of early fall.  The Overlook Terrace is the perfect spot for an outdoor ceremony to exchange wedding vows while basking in the panaromic views of the surrounding landscape.

Both the outdoor expanses and the rustic interior spaces at  Hawk’s View Golf Club lend themselves to the spectacular  fall season.   On this  chilly October wedding day,  Erica and Matt were blessed with a wonderful golden sunlight; setting the stage for an absolutely gorgeous outdoor ceremony.

The bride looks amazing in the stunning charmeuse gown by Augusta Jones named  ”Corsica”.  She completes her look from head to toe by adding  ”Fireworks”  by Toni Federici in her hair–beautiful pops of glitz and stepped down the aisle in her peep toe shoes  by Grazia–further enhanced with pearls down the back of the heel.

This fall wedding had a “vineyard theme” with rich colors and textures.  The theme was cleaverly crafted throughout the outdoor ceremony and the reception later inside.

Erica’s bridesmaids wore beautiful espresso colored satin gowns by Jasmine with streamers flowing down the back.

A magnificant moment in time with the glorious colors and textures of the season.

The happy couple took advantage of the outdoor spaces to capture some incredibe photos.

As you walk  into the dining room,  you are  suddenly swept away.  The expansive windows literally bring the outdoors, in.  The heavy timber log posts and beams fill the room with so much warmth and character.

Greeting guests are these clever table favors.      

Then they are amazed at the warmth and elegance of the room.

What is truly amazing is that Erica’s wonderful Mother is responsible for all of the decorations!

From the headtable to the “Two Some” table for the bride and the groom–no detail was left to chance.  The warmth of the room was enhanced with candlelight .

Alright so you all know about the frog I dated about a month ago and how that wonderfully that turned out. Well we ended up dating again. Yes I know not the best idea considering the reason he broke up with me with and how the only interaction we had between the two times we dated were throwing insults at each other, but we got back together and then at three in the morning last Thursday he broke up with me again…

We’d gone to a movie earlier that day and everything seemed fine and when we got i asked him if he was ok, he said he just had a lot on his mind, but not to worry about it. Then at about midnight he texts me asking me what i’m doing, obviously i was about to go to bed, but he insisted i go over to his room and watch this show called rules of engagement (if you haven’t seen it, i highly recommend it) and to spend the night. I finally conceeded and went over, totally expecting to fall asleep during the show. We watched two episodes of the sitcom and then started making out. Finally at 2am i said we should stop and go to bed. So we did however he started asking me questions. Things like why do you like me, if dimitar (this other guy who likes me, but is more or less like max, so i don’t want to get into that mess again) likes you why aren’t you with him instead, asking me how many guys i’ve been with, and he even asked me what his interests are. And while i could answer the questions he apparently wasn’t happy with the answers. I told him i found him interesting, because he’s so different from me, and he said “I don’t want to be your kaleidescope” and that he wants to be with someone who is more like him and thinks more like him, and I’m thinking well that’s boring. I mean i personally do not want to date myself, I know myself, i don’t want to date someone who is just like me. Then he said that because of the person i am he doesn’t want to be with me. And i’m like you don’t even know me. He also proceeded to tell me that the way i live me life is wrong and he doesn’t like it. Because unlike him I don’t go out finding a way to get an adrenaline rush just to feel like i’m alive. I can enjoy the little things and while i would do crazy things i don’t need to do them to live. He also says that my standard of fun is quite low. Because according to him, when i go out i should set a standard of what i’m going to accomplish. For example: he goes out and is like i’m going to get obliterated, get drunk off his ass that night and that is exactly what he does. Unlike me, when i go out i go out with an open mind and see what happens, go with the flow. I’ve gone out with my friends with no plan at all, all we knew was that we were going to get snacks and a drink and walk around town. We ended up meeting a group of four really cool guys and walking and talking to them and had an amazing night (if any of you want more details on that, let me know). Idk last time i checked going out without a plan and doing whatever comes along is called being spontaneous. He also told me that i should have sex just for the fun of it. And i’m like i’m not a whore. Oh and when he asked me about his interests, i gave him what i know of him and he said you know i have a girl back home who could answer all those questions perfectly. And i’m like really?! You’ve got to be fucking kidding me. Ya newsflash everyone at this school has that someone back home, but guess what you’ve got to move on. You have to make new friends and build up that kind of friendship. That kind of friendship takes time, I’m not going to know every freakin detail about you when 1) i’ve only known you for a few weeks, and 2) you won’t tell my anything. AHHHHH!!! I was so pissed, and this was at 330 in the fucking morning and i had a 9am class! Oh and then when i woke up later that day for class, i noticed i had a massive hickey on my neck!!! Not happy.

Finally some photographs of Pets at Home adoptees Rosemary, Thyme and Jasmine. These guys were returned because apparently they smelled but they are the most fantastic girls. They are all full of mischief and are so confident and cheeky. They love people and are out saying hello whatever time of day it is. Jasmine is Steve’s rat. He takes her out and she trots straight up to his shoulder where she sits and has a yoghurt drop!

They are about 6 months old now but are so tiny, they just don’t grow! Keeley and Fearn are already heavier than them despite being only 3 months old!

Hello lovelies!

Today after school I had a photoshoot with my friends Haley & Rachael’s three lovely dolls Syphre, Tatsuhi & Jasmine. It was so much fun! I am sorting through the photos right now, but here is a preview of more to come later tonight!

I was awakened by my bird this morning. My dad came into my room and placed Yoshi on my bed by my head and gave him a DVD to sing to. Yoshi started singing and… tapping on my nose. :s Yeah. Not fun when you are trying to sleep.

So I go up, got dressed and ready for school. My mom and I went outside TO THE SIGHT OF FROST! =D It made me happy even though the weathermen said it would snow Thursday night. We got to the van and my mom started to scrape the ice off her windows as I got comfy in my seat. I texted my brother (who has yet to reply):

And I COULD see my breath! It was awesome!

Anyway, my mom and I talked about my evil stats teacher and how stupid weathermen can be (if you read “Summer’s” posts, you will see that I am the mean one!).
