With the first decade of this century almost at an end and most people looking back, we at On Cellul

With the first decade of this century almost at an end and most people looking back, we at On Celluloid look forward to the UK film releases worth anticipating in 2010:

1. Up In The Air (due for release: 15 January 2010) - A film which is likely to figure large come Oscar sees Juno director Jason Reitman helming a film starring George Clooney as a consultant who lives the jetset life helping corporates to restructure and shed staff whilst trying to rack up 10 million air miles forced to contemplate being grounded. Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick co-star.

2. Un Prophete (due for release: 22 January 2010) – One of the most praised films from the Cannes and London film festivals this year, Jacques Audiard’s prison film should become a breakout foreign language hit as an Arab prisoner gets sent to a French jail.

3. Edge of Darkness (due for release: 29 January 2010) – Mel Gibson stars in a film for the first time for several years in this revenge thriller directed by Casino Royale helmer Martin Campbell in which Gibson plays a detective hunting for the killer of his activist daughter.

4. The Princess and the Frog (due for release: 5 February 2010) – Much has been made of this film having the first black heroine in a Disney film but the film also sees a return to hand-drawn 2D animation for the House of Mouse which when the trend is to stick any old animation in 3D, this must be applauded.

5. Youth in Revolt (due for release: 5 February 2010) – Michael Cera stars in the dual roles of Nick Twisp and Francois Dillinger in this adaptation of C.D. Payne’s novel in which Twisp hopes for Portia Doubleday’s Sheeni will be the girl to take his virginity. Talented helmer Miguel Arteta directs.

6. Shutter Island (due for release: 19 February 2010) – This film featured in my second half of 2009 anticipated movies but was unfortunately delayed. Martin Scorsese adapts the novel from Denis Lehane (of Mystic River and Gone Baby Gone fame) in which Leonardo diCaprio stars as a detective. Mark Ruffalo, Emily Mortimer and Michelle Williams co-star.

7. Everybody’s Fine (due for release: 19 February 2010) – It’s a been while since Robert de Niro appeared in a decent film but he is getting rave reviews for his performance as a widower who takes a road-trip to re-unite with his grown-up children.

8. A Couple of Dicks (due for release: 26 February 2010) – Kevin Smith returns directing Bruce Willis in a comedy about a pair of cops. Expect more laughs as Seann William Scott, Adam Brody and Jason Lee co-star.

9. Green Zone (due for release: 12 March 2010) – Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon re-team for this adaptation of the best-selling book Imperial Life in the Emerald City in which a US army officer goes rogue in Baghdad. Jason Isaacs and Brendan Gleeson co-star.

10. Season of the Witch (due for release: 19 March 2010) – I know very little about this but it stars Nicolas Cage who was mental in Werner Herzog’s Bad Lieutenant in a story based in the 14th century about knights transporting a witch to a monastry. Promises to be mad as a box of frogs.

11. Cemetery Junction (due for release: 7 April 2010) – After the disappointing The Invention of Lying, Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant re-team for a comedy starring Ralph Fiennes in a story about three men working in an insurance company. Lets be optimistic!

12. Lebanon (due for release: 9 April 2010) – Israeli director Samuel Moaz’s film is a claustrophobic take on the Israeli-Lebanon war of 1982 showing the war through the experiences of paratroopers in a lone tank searching a hostile town.

13. City of Life and Death (due for relase: 16 April 2010) – The “rape of Nanjing” remains a controversial event in the histories of China and Japan which still causes tension between the two countries. Chuan Lu’s epic won the Golden Seashell at the San Sebastian film festival for its dramatisation of this 1937 event.

14. Robin Hood (due for release: 14 May 2010) – Sir Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe re-team for another take on the mythology of the Nottinghamshire outlaw as Crowe plays the titular character with Cate Blanchett as his Maid Marian.

15. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (due for release: 28 May 2010) – Can Jerry Bruckheimer do for the video game adaptation what he did for the theme park ride adaptation with the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise? Jake Gyllenhaal will certainly hope so as he stars as the title character in this franchise starter. Gemma Arterton co-stars as the English heroine.

And when they cast Gary Oldman as Sirius Black I pretty much shut up altogether.

That man is fabulous in paranormals and fantasies. Look at Bram Stoker’s Dracula. And despite only have a cameo role in the Harry Potter movies, he dominated the screen.

I think it’s no small coincidence that some of the best actors in the world just happened to have ended up in the Harry Potter movies, chewing up the scenery in some of the best cameo roles of the decade. Jason Isaacs is another one, as I reported last week. (And it honestly didn’t occur to me until just now that this is the second Harry Potter actor I’m picking on!)

I also loved him as the bad guy in Airforce One. Remember that?

There’s something delicious about a really bad boy, and Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter seri

There’s something delicious about a really bad boy, and Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter series has no redeeming features whatsoever…except that Jason Isaacs who plays him in the movies is drop dead sexy with his blue eyes and hissing line delivery.

He’s possibly one of the more interesting character actors to come out of England in the last ten years. He pops up all over the place, including a minor role in West Wing in the later years that challenged Josh for Donna’s romantic heart for a while, that was played with understated intensity. He played a great double role as Captain Hook and Wendy’s father in Peter Pan that gave Robin Williams more than a run for his money, and grown women everywhere a new appreciation for old fairytales.

In romance writing circles the theory that currently holds for why readers like bad boys so much is the appeal in seeing them crumble when brought to their knees by the love of a good woman (and their love for that woman).

But Lucius Malfoy doesn’t love one, nor is he loved by one, yet it’s still fascinating to watch him chew up the screen in the Potter movies. Since Sirius Black’s unfortunate demise, he’s one of the best characters roaming the celluloid. Even when he bargains with he-who-shall-not-be-named, you know he doesn’t really mean it. There’s not a redeemable bone in his body.

So why do we still watch him with such utter fascination? He should be dismissed as a cardboard character, completely flat, one dimensional and with completely predictable reactions. Yet he holds the screen when he’s in the scene.

That’s real talent, and real charisma.

Matt Damon ve yönetmen Paul Greengrass The Bourne Supremacy ve The Bourne Ultimatum filmlerinin ardından Green Zone adlı filmde yine aksiyon dolu bir yapıma imza atıyorlar. Filmin konusu Irak savaşında kaosun hüküm sürdüğü, hiç kimsenin birbirine güvenmediği, alınan her kararın beklenmedik sonuçlara yol açabileceği ilk günlerde geçiyor.

Well tonight we are visiting the land of Nazi Germany (FilmWipe fans will be sick of the Third Reich

Well tonight we are visiting the land of Nazi Germany (FilmWipe fans will be sick of the Third Reich and will be hoping that Hitler never existed, obviously no one wants them to have existed but you get my drift, phew. That didn’t go well). Anyway we are looking at Good, formerly a C P Taylor play but brought to life on the big screen by director actor combination Vicente Amorim and Viggo Mortensen. The film could be described as a gem, giving an insight to how ordinary Germans could get caught up with the regime even they didn’t actually do anything. Furthermore it could be described as offering a view on how people tried to do good things while inevitably being swallowed up by the political power of the time. However I think a more appropriate description would be to say that the film is the biggest waste of time since David Blaine sat in a glass box and proved that he can sit. Magic.

The film follows a literature professor called John Halder (Viggo Mortensen) in 1930s Germany. He initially rejects national socialism and its ideas. He is particularly appalled by the regime’s banning of books from certain authors. His friendship with Morris (Jason Isaacs) a jewish pyschiatrist also adds to this sense of disillusionment with the government. However, after having an affair and leaving his wife Halder is dragged closer to national socialism by his new partner. After currying favour with the regime for a novel he wrote in favour of euthanasia he decides to join the party in order to further his career. This leads to the collapse of his friendship with morris. As things worsen for the Jewish population of Germany he is places in a position where he has to make some difficult decisions about whether he should help his friend or further his career.

Without giving too much away this film is a complete and utter waste of time. On paper the story is something that is both engaging and thought provoking. Instead you are thrust into a position of feeling you have just had an hour and a half of your life stolen from you. The end of the film is abrupt and takes away the opportunity to understand the character and the story better. The film could still have finished with the outcome it does and developed the story far enough that you felt vaguely satisfied by what you have watched. The worst part of the ending is that it is not even interesting enough to make you think about the story afterwards and create your own ending. It is just dull, pointless and brings a fitting end to a terrible and depressing experience.

The acting of Jason Isaacs is excellent and is a ray of sunshine is this turgid nightmare. The sad thing is that he is so rarely in the film that you feel as if you have been cheated. You want to know more about his character and wish that the film would move away from Mortensen and back onto something more interesting.

Vigo Mortensen is an enigma in this film. It is clear he is acting his socks off. However, what is not clear is why they forces him to play his character in such an uninteresting way. I understand to an extent why they wanted a performance like this. However, it clearly doesn’t work. This is not Mortensen’s fault. But they manage to make him look incompetent and dull. There is nothing that draws you to his character. Instead you wish he would get shot by the Nazi’s instead of joining them.

The direction in the film is generally bad. Everything looks slightly hammy and has the feel of a local amdram group rather than the culmination of a crack team of Hollywood professionals. Frankly it gives Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez’s Gigli a run for its money as most disappointing film and probably is the poorest film on the Third Reich to have been released for two decades.

Overall a good film gone bad. This should be avoided at all costs unless your thinking of spilling the beans in Guatanamo bay. If so then this will do the trick as you will tell every secret

Heyy, so today is Blog Action Day, so I’m going to blog about my amazing weekend at Power Shif

Heyy, so today is Blog Action Day, so I’m going to blog about my amazing weekend at Power Shift last weekend.

On the friday evening I coached it from Bristol down to London, and ran all the way (I was very late) to the Institute of Education in the middle of London. As soon as I got there I was kitted out with a reflective vest and told to register people…..but there was no one arriving….my heart sank as I started to contemplate what would happen if the projected hundreds of young people didn’t become a reality sometime soon. Over the last year I have watched a large number of my friends being subsumed trying to organise what ultimately promised to be -and was- the biggest environmental youth summit the UK had ever seen.

Half an hour later the numbers were rolling in and the wristbands out so all was ok. The first plenary was nearly full so speakers like the hip hop teacher Ian Solomon-Kawell, Emily Cummins only 23 and a successful inventor already and Emma from UKYCC were met with lots of interested faces. As soon as that was over I rushed off to meet my friend who was coming from Wales on the train. On the saturday we got up bright and early to get there for 9.30-probably overshot that by about half an hour-but we arrived in time to catch Jason Isaacs up on the stage talking about the power of stories. He should know, he’s a well known actor (Malfoy’s Dad in Harry Potter to name one). He was an amazing speaker, he begun by saying he has a fat brother, who insists that “the jury’s out” on the fact that eating less will make you thinner, and inevitably happier in his case, because, in Jason’s words, “he’s not big-boned and jolly he’s fat and miserable.” Where is this going I hear you saying, but his analogy on climate change and fat brothers is steadfast-no one wants to change if you tell them what they’re already doing is wrong, in fact telling someone not to do something is exactly why they do do it. Same with alcoholics same with drug addicts, why is it any different for us as carbon addicts he asked?

Then came the mainstay of the weekend, and that was learning the Marshall Gantz technique of telling your story to campaign on an issue effectively. Marshall Gantz is one of creators of the incredibly successful Obama campaign for the last election that won him his presidency. Obviously Obama himself is a very successful campaigner and orator, but look more closely and you’ll find that one of his most effective tools for moving the masses is his ability to tell a personal story. His Story of me.

So our mission for the weekend was to master 3 things:

1. The Story of me

2. The Story of us

3. And the story of now.

Combined in one fluent speech these three mechanisms are the perfect way to engage with your audience on your campaign/topic of choice. Not many people respond to being talked at with science, not many respond to scaremongering and political promises, what we do respond to is stories. Tell your tale of who or what inspired you to take action, what was the lightbulb moment, or why are you standing here today? Who’s influenced the way you think now? This 2 minute story of you contextualises why you do what you do, it connects your audience to you in a way they wont even know. Then you tell the story of us, of the collective, of the movement you’re a part of and the movement they could be a part of, and the us that you’ll collectively form when more people get on board. What is it that you stand for and that you can achieve together? Give people a sense of belonging, and then take them with you to your story of now, why is now the moment? Why you, why us, why here, why now? There has to be an uplifting vision of what you can achieve in the current climate that inspires people into action. And that’s what Power Shift was all about.

On the saturday night my friend Rob from Wales spoke about his green building aspirations and the reality of working in the normal construction industry as a brikkie, with lots of jokes and yummy pictures he got a big round of applause, not least because he’s a rare example of a green collar job. The best thing was, although he couldnt stay for sunday and monday, he was really inspired by the day he spent at Power Shift. Meeting all the lovely like-minded people, and developing his story. His realisation that no, it wasn’t just for hippies and moralistic campaigners, it was for him too, and that guy over there, and him and her and her too. I really think that the environmental movement of young ‘uns in the UK has taken a major leap forward this week, thanks to Power Shift.

And lastly, they spent some of the weekend practicing, with the help if Madonna’s choreographer, a flashmob dance to be performed outside the Houses of Parliament….see what you think HERE!
