Building on the trend of Apple, Nokia and others – Sun makes the move into a independent Appst

Building on the trend of Apple, Nokia and others – Sun makes the move into a independent Appstore deployment. As Apple has shown that it is a viable business model, it only makes sense – end-users like to shop around, and are willing to pay for smaller apps. As Google Android starting to make its way into mobile phones, and Nokia “opened” up Symbian – the end-user community developer trend will create a business eco-system worth spending some research on. The project is codenamed Vector but will likely be called “Java Store” after its official launch.

Here is some quotes from Jonathan Schwartz by way of Washington Post.

“Candidate applications will be submitted via a simple web site, evaluated by Sun for safety and content, then presented under free or fee terms to the broad Java audience via our update mechanism. Over time, developers will bid for position on our storefront, and the relationships won’t be exclusive (as they have been for search). As with other app stores, Sun will charge for distribution – but unlike other app stores, whose audiences are tiny, measured in the millions or tens of millions, ours will have what we estimate to be approximately a billion users. That’s clearly a lot of traffic, and will position the Java App Store as having just about the world’s largest audience.”

“The store will be for all Java devices. Initially, the PC desktop will get the most attention from developers and customers, but there’s plenty of Java-enabled phones and developers will be pleased to have another distribution channel, especially one with the power of Sun behind it.”

The first thing is to make sure you have the right profile in the Settings of your phone. Sometimes

The first thing is to make sure you have the right profile in the Settings of your phone. Sometimes you think that Internet is working properly on your phone because you can access web pages in the phone’s web browser. But there are in fact two different types of APN (Access Point Name): one for full Internet connection and another that is a more limited set, often used for WAP only. The latter generally works for the phone web browser whereas Java applications require the full Internet connection.

You must have signed up for the right data plan with your carrier: it should not be a WAP only plan, but cover a full Internet access.

You can then have the APN settings sent for free to your phone by SMS. Carriers often provide this service on their web site. But they do not always clearly differentiate the WAP-only from the full Web profile. It is therefore highly recommended to use the same service provided directly by the phone manufacturers.

For Sony Ericsson:

http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/support/phones/detailed/phonesetupwap

Choose your phone model, country and operator, then enter your phone number to receive the settings by SMS. Follow the instructions given in the SMS to install the settings into your phone.

Once the APN profile has been properly downloaded to your phone, you still need to check that Java applications on your Sony Ericsson use this profile: goto Settings/Connectivity/Internet settings/Settings for Java and check that the APN or Internet profile that you just downloaded is properly set.

For Nokia:

https://nokiags.wdsglobal.com/globalJumpPage.html

Choose : Get Standard Settings, choose your model, then Select the service: Internet, choose your country, Network and Service plan, then enter your phone number to receive the settings by SMS. Follow the instructions given in the SMS to install the settings into your phone.

Once the APN profile has been properly downloaded to your phone, you still need to check that Java applications on your Nokia use this profile: for Nokia Series 40, goto Settings/Configuration and check that the APN or Internet profile that you just downloaded is in the Preferred access pt. field, then select the profile under Default config. sett., select Details, the Items supported should include *Web and * Access point. Finally, go back to the Configuration settings and select Activ. def. in all apps, to make sure that Java apps are also using this profile. On Series 40, you can also make another verification in the Apps. menu: select Upvise, then press Options/Application access/Communication/Network access: choose any option except the Not allowed.

My first one (no guesses what CD I’m currently listening to!) -

And then after some contemplating I did what every Internet user under the age of 25 would do if they were presented with this, I Rickrolled it!!

This is fabulous, I seem to have found yet another way to procrastinate

I ran across an interesting post today that featured ClickIndia.com and a new feature they’re offering that allows users to post classifieds for free, and in real time by sending an SMS or MMS for posts with photos to a certain number, and the post will show up on the site within hours. I know this concept really isn’t new, but I started thinking about the many useful applications for such a data input medium. A problem I have, as well as many others most likely, is that good writing ideas, or blog post discussion ideas always come to me when I’m away from my computer and any other note taking tools. I miss a lot of good ideas by not being able to jot it down. How nice would it be to simply jot the idea down as an SMS, send it to a number, and have that idea make its way onto your blog, or document manager automatically. You would never miss a great idea again!

Software could easily be created for mobile devices to carry out this operation more easily as well. A small Java app could allow you to post quicker and more securely, as well as taking away the character limits associated with most phones. The program could also have a simple list of options asking where you would like to send this information. Send to blog? Send to CRM? Send to Doc Manager? Send to participating Newspapers? The possibilities are endless.

Do you have any ideas of applications for this platform? Post a comment and let us know your thoughts, whatever they may be! Here at MoVa Media Co. we’re always looking for new ideas for mobile applications, and will most likely begin developing a mobile application and WAP gateway that would facilitate such a task, so check back often!

the reason I’m posting this blog is to remind myself what to do in case I forget the steps tha

the reason I’m posting this blog is to remind myself what to do in case I forget the steps that need to be done in order to remote control my machine by using my bluetooth-ed mobile phone (or for yanks “cell phones”).

ok, let’s get started – it might look mega complicated, but in fact it’s a few steps and loads of text explaining why. so don’t panic

this is a mini how-to for ubuntu/linux computers, windows and mac users may look out for a proprietary software called “salling clicker“. linux users don’t need to pay money for the same effect
ok, so here’s a checklist what you need or already should have:

a bluetooth enabled sony ericsson phone e.g. W300i or V630i. why sony ericsson? because they come with a special application called “remote control” that you’ll later need.

a bluetooth usb dongle …. can be found here: Amazon.com
shouldn’t cost you more than a few $, pounds, €, etc…

ubuntu or any linux distribution installed

ok, after this is sorted, we move on to pair our phone with the computer.
first make sure the usb dongle is plugged into your computer and bluetooth is “switched on” on your phone.

I’m testing this with Ubuntu 6.10 «edgy eft» so if you have a newer release e.g. «feisty fawn» configuration settings might look a bit different.

<EDIT>:

YOU DON’T NEED THESE FOLLOWING STEPS IF YOU’RE USING UBUNTU GUTSY (or even FEISTY) — all of this should be already configured and correctly installed.

Here we go:

First you start a terminal/konsole and install the bluez-utils

sudo apt-get install bluez-utils

next you open the file “/etc/init.d/bluetooth” in your favourite editor (make sure to be root!)

sudo nano /etc/init.d/bluetooth

and search for “HIDD_ENABLED=” it’s probably set to 0 and change it to 1. You’ll need that later to successfully connect your phone to your computer. Apart from that nothing needs to be changed, so just hit ctrl+x, save and you’re set.

Now you need to restart your bluetooth services by typing

sudo /etc/init.d/bluetooth restart

</EDIT END>

The next step is to “pair” your phone with your computer. But how does your computer find your phone? There’s something called MAC Address that your computer needs to identify your phone.
To find out what’s your phone’s mac address is, simply just type this into your terminal/konsole

hcitool scan

Your output will be something like this: 23:57:F2:0R:78:L4 W300i (note this is a made-up MAC address)

The final step is

sudo hidd --connect YOUR MAC ADDRESS

You will be asked for a password both on your computer as well as on your phone. Make sure it’s the same
This connects your phone with your pc, asking you to allow using sony ericsson’s remote control feature on the phone.

Now you should be all set, you can use it for an Open Office/Power Point presentation, or controlling your mp3 player (Amarok, XMMS, ….) from your bed, or just simply show off in front of your friends by moving the cursor on the desktop

If something doesn’t work, because I may have skipped a step, then you may find this link helpful.

Ubuntu Help
(here you’ll find other remote control plugins/configuration files for your linux machine! amarok.hid , totem.hid, xmms.hid files…..I thought they all work pretty much the same, you might be fine by using the default ones…)

EDIT from the 16th November:

If you’re using the KDE Window manager and enjoy using these KDE applications, like Amarok, Kaffeine, KDE Desktop (you can now even shut down your PC with your phone), then you may find these hid files useful – I did!

http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show.php/Sony+Ericsson+HID+profiles+package?content=60288it works great! It even has a profile for the VLC and Open Office Presenter – you won’t have to configure anything, just transfer them onto your phone, install them and you should be fine!

In order to send these .hid files to your computer you need to type this in your terminal/konsole:

gnome-obex-send -d YOUR MAC ADDRESS /path/to/filename.hid

ALTERNATIVES:

If your phone doesn’t support hid (Human Interface Device) files (as far as I know only Sony Ericsson and Nokia phones support HID) then you may want to have a look here:

http://tuxmobil.org/bluetooth_cell_apps.html

There are several applications (mostly java applications) that do the basically the same – note your phone has to support JAVA. I recommend checking out,

Bluepad – http://bluepad.sourceforge.net/- works great if you have a larger phone display

Bemused – http://bemused.sourceforge.net/ – check it out, seems great

Remuco – http://remuco.sourceforge.net/index.php/Remuco – seemed a bit complicated from the start, but I’m it’s great!

If you found an error, or something doesn’t work the way I explained it, then please leave me a comment or shoot me an email to rockprinzess@gmail.com

Enjoy your new remote control!
