Conclusion ?

Beer Pong on the Jay Leno Show? Really?

I first saw this a few nights ago. Jay Leno’s Beer Pong Shot of the Week or something to that

I first saw this a few nights ago. Jay Leno’s Beer Pong Shot of the Week or something to that effect. Don’t get me wrong, I can appreciate the skill used in beer pong. I just felt that it didn’t fit into the typical audience of the Jay Leno Show. His luke warm “Primetime Band” and his brand of safe humor make it obvious that he’s trying to run a modern day variety family program. Bringing in the Beer Pong Shot of the Week seems like a desperate attempt to get a college audience.

I’m thinking if he wants a family show, he should just stick to his 10yr old humor and try not to please EVERYBODY. For people in the 18-35 key demo that want real comedy, they’ll watch The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien, plain and simple.

I searched online for any articles that may share my point of view and I might be alone on this one. All the articles I found that cited displeasure of Jay Leno’s beer pong feature made the argument about the fact that the Beer Pong Shot of the Week shouldn’t have the words beer pong because that’s not actually how the game is played. According to Wikipedia, the official rules of beer pong are:

“Players throw a ping-pong ball across a table with the intent of landing the ball in a cup of beer on the other end. The game typically consists of two two-player teams and multiple cups set up on each side set up in triangle formation. There are no official rules, so rules may vary widely, though usually there are six or ten plastic cups arranged in a triangle on each side.”

To be honest, I can respect the sport but I’m not a big fan of drinking games. I think I drink without a game telling me when to drink. For me, drinking games slow down my drinking. For people that wanna drink fast, just join a band… no cups or ping pong ball needed.

However for you tone deaf athletes, I’ll leave you with this shot technique chart. Again, courtesy of Wikipedia… the root of all knowledge.

So today is Thanksgiving Day. The parades are on TV. Your turkey’s in the oven, or you’re preparing to go eat Grandma’s cooking. You’re watching the Lions game at 12:30 p.m. because, after all, it’s tradition to watch the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving Day.

But you’re unemployed and you’re not feeling, well, thankful.

If your high school didn’t stress early American history as much as mine did, you may not remember that the Pilgrims celebrated the first Thanksgiving at the end of a harsh first year in the New World of America. They were simply thankful they had survived.

It’s no stretch to say 2009 has been a hard year for many of us here in America. Many of us may not be feeling particularly thankful this year — or we’re especially thankful we’ve survived this year.

So for Thanksgiving, I present a list of things for which you and I can be thankful (in no particular order):

Unemployment benefits and extensions. Without them, a lot of us would be in deep, deep trouble right now.

Jay Leno’s performances at The Palace and in Ohio for the unemployed. Thanks again, Jay.

Friends and family. Especially those who keep saying “it’s on me,” who help you network, and who just call to say they love you. You know who you are.

Facebook, because it keeps us in touch with our far-flung friends, family, and fans.

Your favorite music. You know what mine is. Enjoy some of yours soon. Maybe today.

Your health. If it’s good — if it’s even okay — be thankful.

My Aunt Joanne’s Thanksgiving dinners. (Yes, I have an Aunt Joanne.)

When I began conceptualizing this blog in the ol’ brainspace, one of the first sections I came up with was “Records That Made Me a Feminist.” I knew Björk was going to get at least one entry. Homogenic and Vespertine each played a vital part of shaping my politics. So, I figured out I’d probably have to write about them together.

Pairing albums for this section of the blog is something I originally wanted to do this when covering Erykah Badu’s Mama’s Gun, which I started listening to around the same time as PJ Harvey’s Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea. I liked the idea of dialoguing seemingly dissimilar work by female artists with one another, but I feared covering those two albums together would short-shrift the artists who made them. However, talking about two distinct pieces of work by one woman seemed easier. And essential. So here we go.

I must admit that covering Björk’s 1997 and 2000 full-length releases present its own political challenges that makes me think critically about how I understand and practice feminism. Both of these albums made me a feminist largely because of the boys I was preoccupied with at the time.

But while my initial reception and resulting connections to them were tied up with potentially normative feelings around romantic angst and heterosexual coupling, I feel the albums speak to my development at the time as well as transcend it. In other words, Homogenic and Vespertine may remind me of boys I used to date, but they speak to larger, more overtly feminist issues as well.

Of course, being a feminist doesn’t mean you can’t like boys or be hung up on them from time to time, so long as you don’t let them run your life. Which I don’t think Björk endorses in either of these records, even though she herself has an ambivalent relationship with feminism (though not with calling out the music industry’s sexist practices of attributing male engineers and instrumental songwriters).

Importantly, as both albums were prescient to my development, they also went over my head when I first listened to them. Debut and Post were more accessible and, as a result, I liked them almost immediately. It was hard for 10-year-old me not to fall for the girl dancing through New York City on a flatbed in the music video for “Big Time Sensuality.”

But Björk’s next two albums took more time to process. Both albums mark advances in the artist’s production sensibilities, approaches to music-making, and interest in electronic instrumentation. Thus, just as Björk had to evolve as a musician before creating these albums, I had to mature a bit as a person before liking them as a fan.

So, Homogenic came out just as I was starting high school. I don’t exactly remember when I bought it, but I think it was sometime toward the end of junior year. I completely ignored it at the time. Or rather, I listened to it once, went “ooh, so angry!” and put Post back on.

The particulars I’ll keep to myself for the sake of decorum. Suffice it to say that I dated someone for a little while, fell in love, we broke up, and I spent a little over a year trying to get us back together. It didn’t work out. Eventually I got over him and whatever I thought we were, but not without some pain and denial and then serious personal re-evaluation. The healing process involved some righteous anger, loud parties, several bottles of wine and other goodies, and burgeoning feminist development. After a rough start, 19 turned out to be a pretty okay year. Homogenic was its soundtrack.

Now, I have no problem acknowledging that this guy was a total jerk to me. But feminism isn’t only about recognizing and calling out chauvinistic bullshit. It’s also about self-empowerment, personal accountability, and un-learning heteronormativity and patriarchal co-dependence. It isn’t always just the guy’s fault, even when it is.

Thus, I also have to own up to being really needy and delusional at the time. I pinned my worth on whoever I was dating without questioning whether being with them was actually good for me. So I projected my own big feelings and insecurities on someone who clearly didn’t want to be with me. I was ignoring the reality of the situation and, as a result, my own well-being. I finally recognized what I was doing when confronted with the lyric “How could I be so immature to think he could replace the missing elements in me — how extremely lazy of me.”

Kinda appropriate that a break-up record got me over mine, no? Apparently, Björk made the album after breaking up with drum’n'bass musician Goldie while they were working on their own project. Hence lines like “So you left me on my own to complete the mission, but now I’m leaving it all behind.” But it pretty much hit all the right notes of melancholy, indignation, rage, and feisty recovery for me. I’m a quarter Norwegian on my mother’s side, so even the line ”I thought I could organize freedom — how Scandinavian of me” in “Hunter” applied.

Attention must be paid to the album’s sound and how it marked a musical departure for Björk. Post was an eclectic mix that boasted songs like “Army of Me,” “Enjoy,” and “Headphones,” that opened up her sound to include state-of-the-art aggressive digital distortion and serene electronic minimalism.

While this was evident in the production work Tricky and 808 State’s Graham Massey did on Post, it wasn’t the focus. It would come to define the artistic work she began doing with producers like Mark Bell on Homogenic and would continue to do with Matmos on Vespertine. But I’d hedge that most casual listeners just remember Post’s ”It’s Oh So Quiet,” which was produced by Björk’s then-mainstay, Nellee Hooper, the man responsible for all the production on her breakthrough Debut. He was also responsible for “Hyperballad,” which I’d argue suggests the artist’s shift, which is fully evident on her next album.

Man, I wish I could post the music video, but WMG has apparently disabled the audio. All the more reason to check out Michel Gondry’s Directors Label DVD, or any of the other myriad DVD titles that have documented her videography.

So Homogenic marks a transition from being a pop star to an artist who challenges her listeners’ ears and expectations with each release. By 1997, we also heard alternative pop stars like Beck and Radiohead establish themselves similarly with Odelay and OK Computer. We would hear Radiohead do it again in 2000 with the mind-blowing Kid A, where they really demonstrated their love for electronic instrumentation and experimental production techniques.

Björk was already on this path in 1997, but while Radiohead looked outward toward the fallabilities of modern life, Björk looked inward at the seductive pleasures and wobbly peculiarities of domestic life and partnership on her next record, rapturing at her voice’s clicks and finding percussive possibilities out of shuffled decks of cards. I don’t think these innovations went unnoticed when Radiohead went to work on In Rainbows. To me, Vespertine’s influence is all over a song like “Nude,” which was originally an outtake from OK Computer. This is further confirmed by the band’s rendition of Homogenic’s ”Unravel” as a tip of the hat. As if lead singer Thom Yorke’s backing vocals on “Náttúra” aren’t enough.

Hmmm. Maybe at some point, I’ll consider Yorke’s duets with Björk and PJ Harvey. Yorke is one of my favorite vocalists, a fact confirmed by a recent revisit of Hail to the Thief. If one of my friends ran a blog on male masculinity and music culture, I’d pen a guest entry in a second.

But I was afflicted with a troubled mind when Vespertine first came out. In addition to boy heartache, I was going through some considerable familial strife. I was also starting my first semester of college, so a tackier person might blame 9/11.

After seeing the music video for “Hidden Place,” I dutifully bought the album, along with My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless, another at-the-time inscrutable release, at the Tower Records by campus. I listened to the album a few times, but my head was not in the right place for it. It was too contented and quiet. I couldn’t hear it. And then for a little while all I could hear was Homogenic at full volume.

Stills from the video that convinced me to buy "Vespertine"; image courtesy of unit.bjork.com

To be blunt, Vespertine didn’t really make sense to me until I started having sex. Critics like Ryan Dombal would seem to concur. I remember seeing her performance of ”Cocoon” on Jay Leno and thinking that it was really quiet, but totally not getting how micro-embodied intimacy is the song’s entire purpose. While I had a good understanding of mechanics and had engaged in related activities before going into my first listen, I don’t think a song like “Cocoon” makes sense to a person unless they’ve experienced it, to speak euphemistically, in a corporeal sense.

BTW, yes that is Bill O’Reilly adjusting his tie. If he was actually listening to the song, I’m sure he’d be appalled by how delightfully, defiantly sexual this song is and that it was performed uncensored on network television. Watching it now, I can’t believe I wasn’t really listening. Maybe I should have been leaning into the television.

Again, the particulars here aren’t really important. I was a week or so into being 20 and, frankly, didn’t want to be a virgin anymore. The guy was someone willing, it was fun, and didn’t last very long.

In short, the romanticism and emotional connectedness that is often built into such an experience was not there, nor do I regret that it wasn’t. I would find that later, which would make my understanding of those aspects of Vespertine more profound and further develop my feminist principles.

I bring sex into the discussion because I, to borrow briefly from Arrested Development’s George Michael Bluth, find Vespertine’s complex eroticism one of its most key contributions to what made me a feminist. Though perhaps a stretch and certainly not without its own distinctions, I tend to think of this album in accord with Audre Lorde’s wonderful essay “Uses of the erotic: the erotic as power.”

And while I don’t know if this entry’s subject has read the essay, something tells me that the same woman who identifies as bisexual and recognizes the erotic potential in mundane activities would concur with much of the theorist’s thesis.

Of course, feminists must also have the wherewithal to recognize that eroticism, even ephemeral evidence like orgasms, are luxuries to some women and girls. Not everyone is given a space, a country, or a political system that allows them the safety and freedom to enjoy and explore these possibilities.

But eroticism isn’t about cataloging who did what to whom for Björk. As David Fricke gestured toward in his review of the album for Rolling Stone, it might be everywhere, at once tangible and theoretical.

This is where I think it’s important to consider the album’s production sensibilities and Björk’s particular uses of her voice. In addition to non-conventional practices like sampling and turning seemingly non-musical domestic items into instruments, the singer’s voice is the album’s real focus. Because of how closely she’s miked, you can hear every tic, breath, whispered turn of phrase, and any other sound coming out of her mouth. As a result, her voice becomes a varied and vital instrument, an idea she has continued to develop and that has continued to stay with me.

De todas maneras, aquí pueden comprobarlo con una presentación bastante débil de “(If You’re Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To” en el show de Conan O´Brien.

Decidido.

It’s another pop emergency, but this time we’re calling all cars to celebrate!

Four letters, G-A-G-A glittered in the backdrop, while Gaga was dressed in a ghoulish black pantsuit. Smoke flowed across the floor over the dancers’ bodies, and Gaga pronounced (well she actually didn’t, it just played in the background):

“Oh-oh-oh-oh-oooh-oh-oh-oooh-oh-oh-oh-oh!
Caught in a bad romance
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oooh-oh-oh-oooh-oh-oh-oh-oh!
Caught in a bad romance

Rah-rah-ah-ah-ah-ah!
Roma-roma-mamaa!
Ga-ga-ooh-la-la!
Want your bad romance”

Let us say, we were quite amazed with Gaga’s ability to keep cue with the backtrack voice of herself.

The fame monster’s performance was a must see.

I’ll admit that this post might be a little bit of a stretch (and I apologize for two Ds in a row), but as I sit here watching Jay Leno and perusing Twitter, I can’t help but notice that both the show and my tweet feed are talking about the same thing: dieting, at least in terms of the dieting done on NBC’s “The Biggest Loser.” As Leno interviews the shows latest cast-off, Allen, who lost about 90lbs in about 10 weeks, I’m reading an article in The New York Times entitled, “On ‘The Biggest Loser,’ Health Can Take a Back Seat” and I am intrigued. I’ve been a big fan of the show and I love seeing the transformations that the contestants have undergone, but at the same time, I’m skeptical. I find it hard to believe that in one week (or over the course of the show), people can as lose as much weight as they do, especially if they are doing it in a healthy way.

The program’s first winner, Ryan Benson, admits that he used dangerous tactics to lose the 122lbs he shed while on the show. I’m not surprised. I’m also not surprised the Benson has declined to attend the upcoming “Biggest Loser” reunion due to his massive weight gain; he is now well above the 300lbs he was when he appeared on season one. Given the fact that contestants are prone to overworking and underfeeding themselves while on the show (essentially, the show is glorified exercise bulimia, where instead of purging, a person exercises their calories off), it’s no wonder that they gain the weight back when the leave The Biggest Loser Ranch and enter the “real world,” where they can’t work out 6 hours a day.

“The Biggest Loser” isn’t the only weight-centered show on television either. Lifetime, VH1 and TLC all have had weight loss/body improvement shows as part of their schedules and while they seem to be helping the lives of their contestants, I can’t help but wonder what kind of impact these shows are having on their viewers, especially the young, females viewers, many of whom may have serious body issues. Seeing contestants lose massive amounts of weight in such short periods of time may inspire viewers to try to do the same, and may do so without the medial and professional supervision the contestants have. I’m honestly surprised that I haven’t heard any horror stories linking back to the show.

If at the end, the contestants are happy and there’s no harm done, then fine. But is dieting really worth it? Morbidly obese people need a change in lifestyle, not a television show that may very possibly be setting them up for failure.

Agora? Tô ansioso prum medley de “Bad Romance” e “Paparazzi (SNL version)“. Será que róla?!

On Thanksgiving Day, I will pass on the dressing but will lap up some mashed ‘taters. Yep, ol

On Thanksgiving Day, I will pass on the dressing but will lap up some mashed ‘taters. Yep, ol’ Mr. Husky likes the right kind of mashed ‘taters. The kind you can eat and still lose weight.

Huh? Eat mashed potatoes and still lose weight? Is this possible? When I began the “Adios, Mr. Husky” blog last month, I promised it would be long on weight-loss advice and stress the importance of regaining one’s health but short on offering recipes.

Many, many other web sites and blogs do a far superior job of offering low-calorie recipes and I simply didn’t want to duplicate what others were already doing better.

But today, in light of Thanksgiving later this week, I am making one of those well-deserved exceptions and sharing my low-calorie recipe for mashed potatoes. Or to be more accurate — mock mashed potatoes.

I take no credit for this basic idea — I found it online — but did add my own flourishes. You can take cauliflower and smash the heck out of it in a food processor, add some nice ingredients and come up with a finished product that looks and tastes like mashed potatoes and at a significant reduction in calories.

Here’s the recipe I’ve fixed several times in recent weeks and plan to make Wednesday night for my own consumption at the Thanksgiving Day table on Thursday.

I take a head of cauliflower and nuke it in the microwave for 10 minutes. It will become very soft. Take a fork or a potato masher and break or smash it up into small pieces.

Put the pieces into your blender or food processor. I’ve used both. Add in a half cup of no-fat ranch dressing and a cup of no-fat cottage cheese. Then let it rip in the blender or food processor. Soon you’ll have a soft mixture with the appearance of mashed potatoes.

Personally, I like to add a tablespoon of horseradish mustard too to give it a little bit of kick. But you can make up your own mind on that embellishment.

I made a batch of mock mashed potatoes the other night. I weighed the cauliflower head and figured, based on its weight, that it had about 175 calories. When I added in the calories for the ranch dressing and cottage cheese, I figured a large bowl — about 4 cups worth — had about 450 calories total.

Compare that to the eight potatoes that my wife estimated would be needed to come up with 4 cups of mashed potatoes. I weighed an average-sized potato and came up with 275 calories. Multiply by 8 and you can easily hit 2,200 calories for 4 cups of mashed potatoes. And even if the 8 potato estimation is high, the mock potatoes still come in with far fewer calories.

Do the mock ‘taters taste as good as the real thing? It’s darn close. The consistency and appearance are spot on. I think it’s the smell of the cauliflower that probably gives it away more than the taste or appearance.

But when it comes to eating a “fake,” this one is probably one of the best-tasting fakes out there and you will save a ton of calories by eating the cauliflower ‘taters instead of the real thing.

Be full. Be satisified but be guilt free knowing you saved several hundred calories. Not a bad deal.

That’s what Mr. Husky thinks.

Later, friends.

As we promised yesterday, we’re going to present you a special video list today in order to get you into the right “New Moon mood”. A few days ago I was completely obsessed with watching the newest premiere vids and interviews. After seeing all the red carpet stuff and picking all my favorite tv specials, I couldn’t wait for the movie to finally hit theaters. So to give you a good start for another workweek and to keep the crazy New Moon mood up a bit longer, here come the top five New Moon videos to enjoy on an otherwise boring monday (Only half a top ten list this time, cause watching 10 vids would take like what? Two thirds of your workday? Perhaps the whole, because you’d probably watch them all over and over again. Believe me, yes they’re that good!). Without further adieu, enjoy!

a

1. This one is perfect to refresh your memory of what the whole story is about. Watch as Peter Facinelli and his lovely wife Jenny Garth act out New Moon with the Edward, Jacob and Bella action figures.

After they summed it all up for us again and now that we’re really down with the plot again, it’s time for the next video!

2. The Twilight Trinity aka Rob, Kristin and Taylor at the Jimmy Kimmel show. Hear them talk about the vampire chippendales and Rob’s ass injury and see as Taylor Lautner gets way embarrassed when they show one of his childhood martial arts vids.

Have you noticed Kristen Stewarts red soles? Louboutins again. Damn, this girl’s got an awesome high-heel collection! But let’s not linger on that before I grow too depressed… Off to the next video!

3. Chris Weitz, new DILF in town on the LA New Moon premiere. In case you don’t remember the orange pants he wore in London, click here to enjoy them (again) before watching the video! Honestly, you need this to get all the funny stuff!

Isn’t he cute? And he shudders to think of himself as a DILF. I already love him right now. Chris Weitz, would you marry me? Or wait, you are already married… So what if I name my children after him to honor his greatness? Chris Edward Jacob Soul, awesome! Okay, over to the next!

4. The Jay Leno New Moon parody called “Newer Moon” combined with amazing red carpet journalism. This includes the vampires attorney, some shirtless scenes and an invitation to the wolfpack-party. Don’t miss it!

Anyone else who wants to come to the wolfpack-party with me? Cause obviously these guys need some hot chicks over there to show them some love…ifyouknowwhatimsayin… Sorry, got carried away. Off to the next!

5. Carrie Keagan does it again, New Moon uncensored, my absolute favorite. They did it with Twilight last year and that was definitely my favorite interview ever since I discovered it. Attention, don’t watch this in front of your mother, grandma or children! Lots of expletives but also more laughs than in any other vid you will find. Carrie Keagan discusses the WILFs and VILFs (new technical term!), upper body nudity, the Taylor Lautner nude scene and the DVD extras (SPOILER: shirtless and jortless wolfpack). Enjoy!

The wolfpack when they get the meaning of WILF, Rob accidently revealing that there’s a nude scene, Kristen talking about objectifying the guys, Elizabeth Reaser aka Esme eager to see them with their jorts off, Chris Weitz totally getting the WILF stuff and laughing his ass off… priceless!

So now after we got you into the right New Moon mood, go and see the fucking movie! Cause it’s pretty fucking awesome! Honestly, trust KStew and the crew!

a

Off to watch all the vids over again (like I haven’t seen them about 87 times to prepare this post…)

Saveyoursoul

a

What are your favorite New Moon videos and interviews? Did you laugh as hard as I did when I saw all these for the first time? Any great hilarious stuff we missed? I know there is, cause we couldn’t cover it all… Send us your favorites and maybe we’ll use them in our next post! Just leave a comment or e-mail us!
