It’s hard to believe that this film was made 16 years ago. It is timeless. Kevin Smith, you are of the finest cinematic kind. Finding Clerks at the local video-in-a-box for a buck was a bit painful, but I didn’t mind saving the salad.

In this clip, Dante and Randall discuss Star Wars politics.

I came across this article this morning. Apparently in this current time of the Apocalypse, desperate times call for ‘desperate‘ measures. Over the past decade and beyond, the State of California has drowned itself in debt due to an over abundance of ’social programs’ that enable those less fortunate to reap the benefits of those who aren’t. Long story short, you think the US economy is in the shitter? The California State economy has slimed it’s way down the shitter, and is sitting in a pile of rot and used feminine products in the septic tank. So, naturally, all of the politicians are scrambling for ideas on how to save face. One such idea was recently concocted (or should I say, re-presented as original) by Democratic State Assembly member Tom Ammiano. He wants to legalize marijuana and give the state additional tax revenue on the $14+ billion industry that is this cash crop.

Now, not only does this sound Utopian because I’m a born-again stoner, but it also makes perfect sense. I mean, you see all the arguments for and against pot, but one thing remains true… all of the other legal drugs (alcohol, tobacco and, yes, even caffeine) have been linked to death. Alcohol especially, leads to deaths of others through drunk driving/wife beating/etc. But you never hear about stoners crashing into walls or baby carriages on the street, and you certainly don’t read about the stoner who went on a shooting rampage. Stoners are chill. It’s part of the culture! So, why wouldn’t the government want to open the door for all of that extra revenue? I mean, generally speaking, it seems that law enforcement officials have better things to do these days than stroll through a park and rough up a few hippies for that dime bag in their pocket.

Legalization of marijuana would benefit EVERYONE. And I challenge you to prove me wrong. The government would make money. The stoner would pay less because it’d no longer be illegal. The dealer would either be forced to move on to harder, more profitable drugs, or get a job at a video store (or do countless other things). And nobody gets hurt. Period. The fact remains that people who want to smoke pot, will smoke pot. Legal or not, they still have avenues to find it, buy it and smoke (or bake) it. AND, it would subject the American people to less useless news stories about celebrity pot scandals. Maybe then we could collectively focus on bigger, more personally relevant issues that should be the focus of our attention!!! (last dirty white blog plug, I promise)

All in all, what’s the big deal people??? All the right players are in place in CA (see picture above), so let’s get down to business! After all, what better way to introduce a little joy into this sullen world? To quote Jay from Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, “Yo! You guys need to turn those frowns upside down. And I got just the thing for that.”

I’ve already gotten used to the idea my blog might cause some ruckus amongst my friends. Either because they sincerely disagree, think I am being too much of an ignoramus, or just to play Devil’s advocate. Recently, I noted people get very heated over Kevin Smith movies. Mostly because I refuse to acknowledge that Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back is crap. I believe that the part in the end in which they attend a Morris Day & the Time concert in which everyone is dancing to Jungle Love really embodies everything life should be, could be and more. And thus, makes up for the crap that may or may not precede it. I wish life was more like Morris Day & the Time.

yes, more key-tars! more gold suits! MORE DANCING!

So this past weekend, we watched Purple Rain for Valentine’s Day. Who could ask for a better date than a date with Prince and Appolonia. I’m not going to discuss the details of the movie, most of you are already familiar with it. However, what’s important here is the movie trailer included with the DVD of Purple Rain, Graffiti Bridge. Here, enlighten yourself.

My favorite part about not having seen Graffiti Bridge yet, is that I can read the Netflix user comments and half care. One user said Prince must have been using the same stylist as Michael Jackson at this time, and I laughed, and agreed. Nothing like some sexy pasty men who know how to use a hair straightener. Oh wait, those are emo kids.

sorry to frighten you all

he's thinking he went wrong here, he's right

There’s really not much Prince has done wrong in his life. So I can excuse him for the bad hair, and other bad decisions probably involved in this movie. Some who find themselves jealous question his sexuality, but that’s okay, but Prince definitely knows he likes women and gets plenty of them, so this is a non-issue. Prince still rules, and always will. If you are unsure of that, there’s always this, (and thanks to Steve for sending this over):

you want some segway, bitches?

Even in frilly shirts, velvet pants, and high heels, he’ll kick your ass.

Last week was about looking back fondly on the old year, this week’s list is about anticipatin

Last week was about looking back fondly on the old year, this week’s list is about anticipating the new. And there’s so much to look forward to that we each had to do our own list!

Bloginhood’s Top 10 Anticipated for 2009:

10) Star Trek XI
Part of me’s looking forward to seeing what Abrams is going to do with the franchise, but I’m pretty uneasy about it being so warped that it won’t resemble Trek anymore. While reimagining works sometimes, as in the case of BSG, other times, well, you get “The Day the Earth Stood Still”, which was a complete waste of time and money. I’m trying to stay positive.

9) Caprica
Here’s another one where I’m a little trepiditious despite being interested. Some of the early comments about the show being a sort of “Dallas” in the 12 Colonies (or, at least on one of them) soured me on the show a little – I kept getting visions of a season finale cliffhanger of “Who Shot Adama?!” On the other hand, BSG turned out to be such a great show, I’m really hoping this one flies too.

8 ) Fanboys
The first time I read the buzz on this flick I was dead set on seeing it. As the months dragged on though, and the release date kept getting pushed back, and word leaked about story changes and various and sundry putting their hands into the production, I grew more disappointed. But I’m still hoping that there will be enough of a good story in there that the Force will be strong with this movie (or, at least tolerably present) when it’s released next month (unless it gets delayed again).

7) More episodes of Terminator – The Sarah Connor Chronicles
I was surprised how much I’ve enjoyed this show since its debut. Despite the repetitive stalk and shoot Terminator elements of the plot and the somewhat predictable relationship developments, the story has, for the most part, remained consistently entertaining. Not a perfect show by any means, but certainly worth making time to watch. I’m interested to see how Summer Glau’s little killing machine continues to evolve toward humanity in the coming episodes.

6) More episodes of Reaper
Another show that, despite the predictable (and unoriginal) general premise of a guy who has to hunt supernatural baddies for the devil, has turned out to be really, really good. The writers have done a nice job of bringing Sam and Andi’s relationship to fruition without stretching out the “will they or won’t they” too long, as well as teasing the nature of the bargain with the devil, the surprise with Sam’s parents, and, of course, allowing Sock (I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Sock is Jay and Silent Bob’s secret love child) to be consistently hilarious and steal scenes without remorse. I got the first season collection on DVD for Christmas and we spent a few days rewatching it, and it’s still as funny as the first time.

5) Anticipation – the 67th Worldcon
Montreal’s going to be a lot of fun this summer. I’ve had my ticket for a while now and I’m in the middle of giving some thought to how I’m going to vote for the Auroras and the Hugos. Initially, I’ll admit I had worries of stumbling along in broken highschool French like the Tick when he was turned into a two-headed blue bird, but then I remembered it’s Montreal, and they’re cool enough to speak to geeks in any language.

4) Watchmen
I haven’t read the graphic novel – yet (it’s sitting in my in-box), but I’m familiar with the premise and it sounds smart and the early buzz says the movie won’t disappoint. The only problem is this dust-up between the studios. Fans can only hope they settle this pissing match so that the flick can actually hit the sreens in 2009 as intended – or ever, for that matter.

3) The Wise Man’s Fear – book 2 in Patrick Rothfuss’ The Kingkiller Chronicle
I just got finished reading The Name of the Wind a little while ago and it impressed the hell outta me. Intelligent and believable fantasy. Rothfuss is definitely an author to keep an eye on.

2) A Muse of Fire by Dan Simmons
Yes, I know this was released in 2008, but I’ve had it on order for a few weeks and it hasn’t arrived yet, so, obviously, I’m now looking forward to it in 2009. Because I’m a huge Simmons fan, and his stories have yet to disappoint, this is one of the foreseeable reading highlights of the year.

1) Battlestar Galactica – the final episodes of Season 4
BSG is one of the best shows on television. Ever. I’m still right pissed off that Season 4 got split in two and we’ve had to wait so long for the back half to hit the air. But that being said, better late than never, ’cause some great SF shows, like Firefly, never get the chance to come into their own. I’ll be spending this weekend watching the webisodes as a warmup, and next week, when the beginning of the end kicks off, it’ll be sweet indeed.

Over to you, harrysaxon!

And how about everyone else? What are all of you looking forward to in SF in 2009?

That’s beautiful, man!

Note: This marks the second in a series of “Movies Of The Day” that covers writer/director/actor Kevin Smith’s View Askewniverse films. For the first films review, Clerks., click here.

Set the day before Clerks., Mallrats centers on Brodie Bruce and T.S. Quint, two best friends who’ve been dumped by their respective girlfriends on the same day. At Brodie’s urging, the pair decide to go hang out at the local mall where, as luck would have their exes are spending the day too. Amidst pop-culture-related debates, sex talk, and run-ins with dealers/mischief makers Jay and Silent Bob, Brodie and T.S. will attempt to win back their significant others.

Mallrats stars Jason Lee (Alvin And The Chipmunks), Jeremy London (7th Heaven), Shannen Doherty (The CW’s 90210), Claire Forlani (Hallam Foe/Mister Foe), Ben Affleck (Hollywoodland), Joey Lauren Adams (The Break-Up), Ethan Suplee (Mr. Woodcock) and Marvel Comics legend Stan Lee. Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith reprise their Clerks. roles, and Brian O’Halloran makes an appearance as his Clerks. character’s cousin. Most of these actors have gone on to appear in subsequent Smith films in these and/or different roles. Trailer and review after the jump.

Following Clerks.‘ mega-success, Kevin Smith was naturally approached by movie studios eager to cash in, thus Mallrats had a much bigger budget than its predecessor and it shows, sometimes a little too much. As in every Smith film, the script is filled with modern cultural references, be it to various comic books, Jaws, and of course Star Wars, but it is often underlined with unnecessary and sometimes distracting sound effects, meant to evoke said reference.

Mallrats was rather poorly received upon its release, probably due to expectation of a film more in line with Clerks. when the two films are very different. Indeed critics have labeled the film as silly and messy, but hey, that’s true and why is that such a problem? Mallrats is louder and sillier than Clerks., but it’s still incredibly well-written silly. Smith continues to prove he’s a master of dialogue and that he can write profanity with taste, a great example of that being the incredible finale for the movie. Some people seem to write profanity for the sake of profanity in unfunny comedies, while others talk of romance in films that don’t seem to have much of a soul. Smith somehow manages to do naturally blend the aspirations of both trends successfully. And that’s why he’s a great filmmaker, not just because he can reference popular movies.

Mallrats is generally regarded as one of Kevin Smith’s weakest films, but I still think there’s plenty to be found here, and enjoyed. It doesn’t have exactly the same feeling as Clerks., but why should it? It’s a film made by someone who clearly knows his stuff, with inventiveness, originality, some great dialogue, great characters and just a great feel to it overall. There’s a reason Kevin Smith is as famous as he is today, even his “lesser” films are great. Mallrats was a consequential flop, making slightly more than a third of its budget, and thus remains Smith’s only film made within the confines of a major studio.

Verdict: Laugh-out loud fun, with a heart. Mallrats currently holds a 7.1/10 on IMDB and a 50% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Note: This marks the first in a series of “Movies Of The Day” that will cover writer/director/actor Kevin Smith’s View Askewniverse films, which will be complete in around six weeks.

Made for a little under 30 grand, filmed mostly at night because of day jobs and starring basically some of Kevin Smith’s friends and first time actors, Clerks. is a true independent film, a dialogue-driven comedy inspired by Smith’s own job at the time.

Clerks. tells of Dante Hicks and Randal Graves, two 22 year olds who work next to each other, one at a convenience store, the other at a video rental store. Through the course of a day, Dante has to deal with girl problems, annoying customers, Randal’s unprofessionalism, the two dealers who hang outside, Jay and Silent Bob and of course the fact that he isn’t “even supposed to be here today”.

Clerks. stars Brian O’Halloran, Jeff Anderson, Marilyn Ghigliotti, Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith himself among others, most of whom are best known for their contributions to subsequent Smith films. Trailer and review after the jump.

If you haven’t seen or haven’t even heard of Clerks., stop reading this right now and go get yourself a copy. If you have, well you already know how great it is, so this is pretty useless. Clerks. is simply superb. An inspirational film to any would-be filmmaker, it proves you don’t need big budget high concept movies to entertain the people. All you need is a good script, and good actors. Smith had both.

Smith truly being a master of comedic dialogue rants, some of Clerks.‘ scenes have become legendary, such as the Empire Strikes Back vs Return Of The Jedi debate. It’s no wonder his characters have become so iconic seeing as how well he writes them. These characters are cool, funny, memorable, relatable, realistic, etc… The only faults to be found with Clerks. are due to its tiny budget and even then, I wouldn’t really consider them flaws. And honestly the fact that there’s a lot of profanity really isn’t an issue, and it’s done with taste.

I really don’t have anything to say, it’s a great film and everyone knows it. Clerks. was huge hit, earning over a hundred times its original budget and won well-deserved awards at the Cannes Film Festival, the Deauville American Film Festival and the Sundance Film Festival. The film obviously launched the career of Kevin Smith, now a very well-known name in comedy, who made five subsequent films set in the same universe, with Jay & Silent Bob serving as the main links.

Verdict: An absolute must-see masterpiece. Clerks. currently holds a 7.9/10 on IMDB and an 86% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Procurando Amy (Chasing Amy). EUA. 1997. Direção e Roteiro: Kevin Smith. Elenco: Ben Affleck, Joey Lauren Adams, Jason Lee, Dwight Ewell, Jason Mewes. Gênero: Comédia. Duração: 105 min.

We have lost one of the true original kings of comedy this past weekend. I know that I am a little late on this one but I had to say something.

I really enjoyed George Carlin’s brand of comedy. Nothing was off limits or taboo and he told it like it was. He was crass and vulgar but he had a purpose and that is what made him better than just about every comedian on the planet.

Sean excelentes, y buen domingo.

Show! Nesse, o Silente Bob fala.

Great!

É, é no plural sim, vendo entenderão. Principalmente, do sexo oral?

Assistam!! Nota: 10.
