Laura Izibor takes her graceful soul music to the Jazz Cafe in December for a show that should be a pretty nice start to the 2009 wind down. I saw her back in June and the show inspired my to start this blog! Seriously – I think it was halfway through If Tonight Is My Last, while nodding my head I had the idea (and she’s the reason I know about Mamas Gun, so I actually owe her quite a lot – lol).

The show is December 1st, very reasonably priced at £12.50 (+ change for booking fees and other nonsense). I assume tickets will be on sale from the usual places yada yada yada (or by clicking here via Seetickets).

http://www.kennedysbaryork.co.uk/ Professor of Saxophone for the Royal Marines, Simon Bates is known

http://www.kennedysbaryork.co.uk/

Professor of Saxophone for the Royal Marines, Simon Bates is known and respected for his stylistic versatility and instrumental prowess. Musical Director for Rick Astley’s re-launch tour in September, Simon is in great demand on the London jazz and session scene – his playing features on countless adverts, film scores, TV theme tunes and pop records. Simon has appeared live and recorded with a wide variety of bands and musicians including Elvis Costello, Lulu, Billy Ocean, Rick Wakeman, D:Ream, Chaka Khan, Emma Bunton, Seal and Peter Erskine. He has performed around the world in a wide variety of settings from the Q.E.2. and Eiffel Tower to Ronnie Scott’s and the Jazz Cafe.

Simon appears frequently on television in programmes such as ‘Johnny Vaughan Tonight’ for which he was Musical Director and was featured on Channel 4’s Big Breakfast every Friday. Some of Simon’s compositions have appeared on the ITV show ‘This Morning’ and on the Discovery Channel. He has also written many advertising jingles, a multitude of library music, commissions from other bands and musicians and cues for all television networks.

Simon’s extraordinary ability to play virtually any instrument in the woodwind family plus windsynth and percussion in any style has led to regular appearances in West-End shows such as Starlight Express, Follies, Chicago and Jesus Christ Superstar.

Simon started to learn the violin at school but the draw of his father’s old clarinet was too much, and so he started to have lessons. With the intense competition of his twin brother, (now a freelance French Horn player), Simon progressed quickly and achieved Grade 8 on the clarinet at the tender age of 12 and viola at only 13. He started to play sax at the age of 14 and got his first paid gig in the same year. At the Colchester Institute, whilst studying for a classical music degree, he turned to jazz and improvised music and went on to the Guildhall School of Music where he gained a Postgraduate Advanced Certificate in Jazz and Studio Music and a L.G.S.M. Performance Diploma. Simon Bates is an official endorsee of Yamaha Custom Saxophones and BG accessories.

There are few things in music better that Eric Roberson live, a sentiment anyone who has seen his show will happily co-sign. After saying so many nice things about him over the years I feel I should be digging for faults and be as critical as possible.

I should chide him for seamlessly re-inventing songs, turning the smooth mellow flow of Couldn’t Hear Me into a bouncy rock number or giving songs on Music Fan First that sounded a little bland a new lease of life. I should berate him for his crowd interaction, using supersharp wit to have the audience rolling with laughter, I came to hear music not comedy! Why oh why serenade someone’s mobile phone…?

It’s all his band anyway, always on point and in Curt Chambers sporting one of the best lead guitarists in the world.

I should be finding faults however it’s almost impossible to. Erro continues to set high benchmarks and met them. He gives the full package; re-working songs so they do not sound like the album, and providing many comedic moments. He obviously enjoys performing and this comes through. Thursday’s concert was by no means Erro’s finest however it was still superior to much I have seen this year. His gospel parody was classic, the intro to Only For U always brings a smile to my face, and Bad For You and Borrow You (off Music Fan First) both rocked live (I also now love both Dealing and Further despite being indifferent to them before).

Yeah, a longer set would have been nice (he did give us nearly 2 hours though!), however to cover everything I want to hear he would probably need 6 hours and a throat of steel (not sure if the Gatorade alone would cut it).

As always, the highlight was the freestyle, a song made up of songs shouted from the crowd. He was tasked with making a song from; sardines, derelict, Thundercats, elephant and swollen. By the end he had everyone singing in unison as if it were an album cut, “relax yourself girl, just settle down.”

If you like live music, seeing Roberson live is a must. If you are a singer or have a band, seeing Roberson live is a must. If you are an exec at a major label please take all your artists to see him, it will make the music industry a better place.

Eric. Thank You.

Sometimes a great voice is not enough. Sometimes going through the motions does not guarantee a great performance. Jazmine Sullivan has an outstanding voice and she went through the motions, however her show at London’s Jazz Cafe on Thursday night was a little underwhelming.

Jazmine Sullivan’s voice is amazing, strong and gravely, and just oozes personality. One of the reasons her debut album, Fearless, stood out was because of this mix of forceful soul singing over tight R&B beats.

Starting her set gone 10pm (about 40 mins after the warm-up finished) she kicked-off with Bust Ya Windows and it got the firing response it deserved, things fizzled afterwards. She belted out the album’s highlights with her superior voice, yet it felt like they didn’t really matter. Her speeches in-between songs were not always relevant and very time consuming; at one point she told us London is her ‘spiritual home’… really????

Two covers, Kayne West’s Heartless and Seal’s Kiss From A Rose were nice surprises (the latter being pretty darn good). When she finished with Need U Bad people headed straight for the exit with no prolonged cheer or call for an encore (extremely unusual for the Jazz Cafe) and I joined them. This was definitely a show for her biggest fans.

Soulside Funk

Anyone who has heard The Magnificent or The Return of the Magnificent knows that DJ Jazzy Jeff makes some seriously good soulful music which is a long way removed from his rap-pop days with The Fresh Prince. His two albums have featured the likes of Jill Scott, Eric Roberson, Raheem DeVaughn, J-Live, Baby Blak, Kardinal Offishall… the list is immense.

And just in time for Christmas, he brings his live show to the Jazz Cafe on December 17th (the day of my work Xmas party – dilemmas…) and i’m pretty sure it’ll be an awesome present. Many moons ago he bought a hungry vocalist called Eric Roberson with him so who knows what new talents he has uncovered to unleash on Camden. Also, its been a minute since The Return of the Magnificent was released so expect many a new joint.

Tickets are £16.50 (+ change), and available from – SeeTickets

NME.com today announced that Cornwalls favourite ex pat ivory key tickler Tori Amos is to play a special, one-off London club show at the world-famous Jazz Cafe on Wednesday December 2nd.

Not only is it a rarity to have the ginger songstress play such a small venue in the Capital, but she’ll also be treading the boards with just her trusty piano in tow.

For exclusive access to the gig, fans are being asked to show their faces at the HMV at 150 Oxford Street from 10:30 am to collect their wristbands which grant the wearer entry to what is sure to be a fantastic little show. But be warned, there is a limit of one wristband per person so don’t get down there thinking you’ll be able to load up on wristbands to throw on eBay or pass on to your friends.

Tori Amos’ next album, ‘Midwinter Graces’, is due for release this coming Monday [16th November]

Yes, I do realize I’ve been making all the posts of late. xD *cough*

Anyway, the Creators have a new blogeh posteh! And it’s about time too, since we haven’t gotten any news on islands in forever. The blog post is titled “Return of Comic Kid, and New Island?” WHY SO MYSTERIOUS CREATORS?

The post itself:

——-
Return of Comic Kid, and New Island?

Well, I’m finally back after a long trip of searching out new islands in Poptropica. I even had time to grab some hot chocolate along the way.

COMIC KID

Interesting indeed. What island do you think this’ll be? For some reason, I think it’s French Island. Maybe it’ll just be plain “Music Island” LOL. A member of the PHF even suggested that it’s another part of Reality TV island, however I don’t see how it would fit in. :/

The cut-off stage background says “Jazz Cafe”. As some of you might have noticed, the microphone and stool look as if they’re from Spy Island (in the Hair Club) although the one at the Hair Club is blue.

Another new update is the new addition to the “Buy Poptropica Credits” page. It now allows you to buy credits from your mobile phone! (Credit to Deathstalker of the PHF!)

Personally, I think this feature is useless – who’s going to buy credits from their phone? I just don’t see the point.

And so I end this post with 2 questions for you PHB readers (please answer them in your comments!):

What island do you think the Creators are referring to? French Island maybe?

Have you ever brought credits, plan to, or probably never will?

Until next time,
