Due to collecting far too much music and ultimately storing it all in mp3 on a hard drive, I have some CD’s left over which enjoyed far to little love during the past month. That’s what brings me round to you! If any of you pals from all over the globe is interested in some very valuable world music, Spanish rarities, remix shit, Asian underground, hip hop, lounge and the like, please read the list below.

I ship anywhere in the world. Conditions depend on each CD and the destination. Some CD’s come naked without booklet and additonal info, some have the whole visual atttractive packaging left. It was definitely one of the most colourful years in a long time. In music however, 2009 was truly incredible, dominated by solid edits, new directions in dubstep, infectious indie melodies, tech-ier house, or slowing down the beat. I didn’t mind pulling all-nighters, thanks to some pretty dope podcasts from both East Village Radio (Authentic Shit, Turntable Lab, Main Ingredient, Body Music, etc.) and Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Show. Also the countless times in the studio, where I work, where we all looked at each other and asked ‘wtf is this?’ to whatever sick track was playing. Then dropping whatever we were doing until we found out what it was. Simply put, dance music was put on it’s head in 2009 and was packed with excitement. Looking forward to what 2010 will bring with new artists (or perhaps a new LCD Soundsystem record?). Have a great new year everyone.

FAVOURITE 2009 ALBUMS:

DAM FUNK – Toeachizown (Stones Throw)

I first heard, ‘LAtrifying‘ played on Mark Ronson’s ‘Authentic Shit’ show early 2009. It was probably the #1 most ‘WTF is this?’ moments of the year, for me anyway. It’s got a Prince groove with so much swagger. The dirtiest track on this 2xLP album is definitely ‘Killdatmuthafucka‘. Rock it on the ipod, stroll down the street, and I promise you will feel like pimp of the year. Funk is definitely back, taking us into the future. Check out his mixtape here:

GRIZZLY BEAR – Veckatimest (Warp)

A really great song, can usually make a ghastly TV show, watchable. I dare not say what the show was (who cares really?) but the song was ‘Two Weeks‘. It’s absolutely epic. Anyhow I’ve got 2 Grizzly singles on my best list. You must hear this album, if you haven’t. It’s sheer brilliance. Filter Magazine wrote: ‘An Album this deep-hearted and digestible call out for mass-consumption. And the more people who hear this record, the better.’. We need more love in this world.

BIBIO – Ambivalence Avenue (Warp)

Steve Wilkinson (aka Bibio)’s debut album on the awesome Warp label sounds like a medley of influences. Previously known for electronic folk, he totally opens up here. I couldn’t help being reminded of Sergio Mendes from the title track, to the DJ Premier-ish ‘Fire Ant‘ (at 1:37, you’ll wanna throw your hands up), Björk-like ‘Sugarette‘, Tahiti 80 or Cornelius on ‘Lovers’ Carvings‘, Jose Gonzales on ‘Abrasion‘, Flying Lotus on ‘S’vive‘, and finally Boards of Canada peppered throughout. Wilkinson manages to combine all these sounds and performs each track with such tenacity, in the end it just sounds so fresh and satisfying. Absolute magic.

VARIOUS – Hyperdub-5: 5 years of Hyperdub (Hyperdub)

My first encounter with Dubstep was definitely Benga & Coki’s anthem, ‘Night‘ (Tempa), followed by it’s monster remix by Geeneus. The only thing though I wasn’t too crazy about the genre at the time, because I was so immersed into cosmic disco and disco/80s edits. More importantly I found that everything sounded like slight variations of Benga’s sound. Then I came across the ‘Narst / Love Dub‘ EP by Cooly G (Hyperdub), and instantly fell in love with dubstep again. It’s so distinct from other acts as it’s more tribal house on a dubstep ‘vibe’. This I could relate too! Anyhow, this is a 32 track heavy album commemorating 5 years of Hypderdub (classics, new, exclusive, rare and previously unreleased material) including Burial, Cooly G, Zomby, Kode 9, Flying Lotus, and many others. Favourite track on the album: Zomby’s ‘Tarantula‘.

Every now and then I like to open up the archives and reminisce about a couple tracks you may or may not have heard.  It’s a little break from the usual flow of newer stuff one might find on here.  So for the first installment I wanted to highlight the best funk and soul tracks to flow my way this past year.  I know that’s a pretty bold statement considering the amount of tracks tossed up.  This list is pretty subjective anyway. Each bring their own unique style to the genre. Real classy, I hope you enjoy em all.

Gwen McCrae was first introduced to me by my friend and local DJ, MEGAPHONETEETH.  I think it came to him through the gems located on beat electric. This track is produced by Steve Alaimo for T. K. Prod., released in 1974 and is damn tasty.

Electric Wire Hustle was a relatively new stumble for me that happened a couple months ago.  I think I was just doing some random internet surfin and stumbled into a gem.  I should have bought a lottery ticket that day.  Oh well, at least I have this for the rest of my life.

Raphael Saadiq is another piece introduced to me by MEGAPHONETEETH.  What can I say, the guy has an ear for finding funk, soul, and jazz delights.  When he showed it to me he described it as ‘a young michael.’  Do you agree?

Demis Roussos is another amazing soulful funk track I found last year while working on my last project.  I simply love the vocals in this track.  The horns, funky bassline all add different dynamics that made it easily one of my favorites and easiest to post.

This was much harder than the “My 50 Favorite Television Shows of the 00s” list. When I started the television list, I singled out 70 shows or so and cut it down to 50. It took me three days to come up with a first draft of albums and I ended up with 185! I was going to just do a list of 100 but I like consistency so I whittled the list down to 50.  The closer I got to 50, the sadder I got as I had to delete albums I loved off the list. After how depressing it ended up being bringing this list down to 50, a) I won’t even try to single out a top 10 (although I think “Kid A” would be my favorite album) and b) sorry, Karen, I won’t even attempt a 50 Favorite Singles list.

A couple of notes:

• Just a reminder, I am not saying these are the 50 BEST albums in the last decade, these are the ones I am most fond of
• Apparently my best years for music was 2000 and 2002 as nine albums from each year made the list.
• Nothing released this year made the list and only two albums from 2008
• Only Jay-Z and Radiohead have more than one album on the list (unless you count Jenny Lewis twice for her solo and Rilo Kiley)
