"Jazz," by Debra Hurd. Oil on canvass. The windows are open 24-7, and the oscillating fan

"Jazz," by Debra Hurd. Oil on canvass.

The windows are open 24-7, and the oscillating fan’s in overdrive. My arms feel like heated pads. My legs burn slowly under that grill we call the sun. Summer’s almost here, which means it’s time to revive the Wrazz from its unintended slumber.

I wish I could say I was too busy to maintain my orphaned blog, but that’s not entirely true. Work is steady, but not so overwhelming I couldn’t drop the occasional line. Instead I watched my hits grow cold, tumbling into the Tall Man’s embrace. Not that I didn’t quietly monitor its dwindling activity. For the most part, my “audience,” such as it is, continued flocking to outdated wrestling summaries. Here, John Cena is forever WWE champion, Chris Jericho a petulant bridesmaid. I still catch Raw most Mondays and visit Jim Ross’ blog whenever his dinner bell clangs through my in-box, but, hell, man, I don’t feel like staying up ’til two in the morning hyperlinking the same damn names every week and trying to find new ways to describe the pint-sized Rey Mysterio’s latest impossible flight.

Which makes me feel kinda bad, really. The Daily Wrazz was, for one, supposed to be daily. But that wasn’t a pace I felt like maintaining. I like the written word too much to just barf whatever for the sake of exposure. The Wrazz was also supposed to be a fusion of “wrestling” and “jazz,” two seemingly unrelated passions. Well, I flogged the Wr but left the azz weeping dockside. I’m trying to rectify this. God knows, I get so many hours of music delivered to my door each week as Under the Radar’s jazz editor, I have no shortage of material.

Y’know, I don’t think I’ve ever written about how I came to jazz. My affection for it still comes as a shock to a lot of my friends, but it’s been part of my diet for, lessee, almost 20 years now. That said, I ain’t giving Nat Hentoff a run for his money. Francis Davis has nothing to fear. Bill Milkowski, roll over and go back to sleep. I doubt I’ll ever be able to examine jazz with a scholar’s breadth; I just love to listen. The relationship between the instruments and their manipulators. The vibe of a good quartet. The elasticity of an improv boomeranging back into a structured arrangement, and why I respond with joy.

My initial interest was historical, almost clinical. In 1991 I was writing a short story involving teenagers set in 1921, and I spent a lot of time interviewing what few firsthand survivors remained (much to their bemusement, I think) or at the local library shoveling through microfilm and searching for music. Most of what I unearthed were scratchy Follies-type recordings transferred to cassette, which I then committed to my own mixtapes that I’d play while writing. I also bought a handful of Dixieland collections, and holy shit, was that ever an eye-opener. After I finished my story, which had evolved into a nostalgic fantasy, I listened to those songs again and again, marveling over stuff like “Basin Street Blues.” It all sounded so long ago, yet so alive and sad and happy and urgent and lonesome, dirty, and dreamy. (Dixieland was also the first time I ever heard the banjo used strictly to keep rhythm — no effusive breakdowns.)

A few years later, of course, jazz was briefly back in vogue thanks to a dalliance with hip-hop, a union that worked to varying degrees. I was smitten with Digable Planets’ Reachin’ (A New Refutation of Time and Space) (though I was more into their much-ignored follow-up, Blowout Comb), but when I picked up Guru’s original Jazzmatazz, which featured not borrowed samples but the flesh ‘n’ blood Donald Byrd honking in real-time, I was in love. “Loungin’,” Guru bobbed, “I’m mellowed out and just loungin’.” That’s how I planned to cruise through the ’90s too: melting into couches, cold beer in grip, basement walls expanding to thumped-out grooves.

The first real jazz album I ever bought was John Coltrane’s Blue Train, 1994. Ten bucks at Fred Meyer. Sweet cover. Couldn’t pass it up. Got it home and chilled as September 15, 1957, romped through my living room. That title cut, man. Wuhnuhnuhnuhnuhhhhh UNGK! UNGK! Wuhnuhnuhnuhnuhhhhh UNGK! UNGK! The sound of my gateway drug. I still recommend that and Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue to anyone curious enough to toe-dip. Willful drowning is guaranteed.

Right now I’m absorbing Sonny Rollins’ Saxophone Colossus. That came in the mail too (along with some Red Garland and Art Tatum sessions). Max Roach on drums, knocking shit out of the way. It’s so damn pleasurable I want to stop writing, roll onto my back, and watch patterns dance across the ceiling. Tomorrow I’ll check out Dave Douglas’ Brass Ecstasy, first for fun, then for scrutiny. But, really, how could anyone not love this stuff?

Yeah, c’mon y’all uh, lift your fist
Uhh, yeah, lift your fist c’mon
To all my people, just lift your fist
Seem like it ain’t no peace, no justice
How you want it, the bullet or the microchip?
Either way you got to lift your fist; we get it down like this
To all my people, ball up your first
Seem like it ain’t no peace, no justice
How you want it, the bullet or the microchip?
Either way you got to lift your fist

[Black Thought]
Yo, c’mon
We livin life close to the edge, don’t push
But this ain’t eighty-three and it’s not the Cold Crush
It’s kids on the street strapped, huffin that kush
They eyein the next cat, livin all plush
I guess frustration make a brother do what he must
What’s the combination that can make a human erupt
Team leaders gettin mutinied up, who couldn’t read
the signs, thinkin the day and times is (??)

[Guru]
Indeed, we blast, refuse to kiss ass
Quick fast, ready to mash cause of a bugged out past
Swallow the pain, follow the mental terrain
It takes a hell of a man, nowadays to maintain
Garments bloodstained, face bruised and battered
Our eyes reflect the agony, of dreams that were shattered
And they love it, when we wild out and kill our own
but the greater responsibility, yes, is still our own

[Chorus]

[Guru]
Uhh, worldwide famine, ghetto people demand
that somebody do somethin soon, and let’s examine
the facts, behind the violent attacks
Behind the daily gunplay the cocaine and the crack
Thug season – what’s the reason for the treason?
Everybody’s gotta eat, some gotta resort to thievin
Take money money make money money money..

[Chorus]

[Black Thought]
Yo – from the time they eyes open til the clock strike death
Brothers is stressed, walkin ’round holdin they chest
They got the government surveyin they steps and can’t breathe
They dynamitin them projects to smithereens
Money comin but them days too few and far between
You tryin to taste just what the world’s offering, ya’mean?
I seen enough to make a grown man scream
Brothers thirsty and hungry to get that thing

[Guru]
Too many tears of pain, too many years of struggle
Too many drops of blood, too many problems to juggle
Too few jobs available, too few schools equipped
Too few role models; just gangsters and pimps
Will you succumb, will your heart grow numb
or will you save the world, and use your mind like a gun?
I’m the one – I turn a stick-up kid to a soldier
Me and The Roots, word up, we’re takin over

[Chorus] w/ variations (2X)

Big Up To All My Heads!!!!

On behalf of myself, my partner Solar and the 7 Grand family, we are sending out warm thanks and shout outs to all the Real Hip Hop Heads and Music Lovers who came through to check us on our most recent sold-out tour through Colorado and Utah! From opening the tour at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival in Park City Utah, to closing the tour at the incredible X Games, this has definitely been one of our most exciting and enjoyable tours ever! On this 9 city run loads of 7 Grand supporters, GangStarr and Jazzmatazz fans alike came together to enjoy some of the realest Hip Hop and to experience the certified best Hip Hop/Jazz act on the planet! We have been working extremely hard putting this live show together and it was indeed very rewarding to connect with the great crowds of Colorado and Utah. Night after night, we took euphoric audiences on a musical journey through the classic catalogue complete with awesome musical arrangements by Solar! To those who represented and checked us out on this great tour, much love and holla to let us know what city you caught us in. I am real proud to have started off 2009 here in America with such a bang! That’s wassup! To those who missed us, don’t worry, stay tuned, as this year we will be bringing this world class act to a city near you! Look out for the new Guru 8.0 Lost and Found album coming soon from 7 Grand Records!

Peace!

Eventhough I’m more fan of the Gangstarr tracks than the Jazzmatazz ones but ok.
I enjoyed the performance although I expected a bigger musical experience than just a dj,trompet player and a guy that could start his own one man band .. really the dude played like 4 instruments (not at the same time) that evening. It would’ve been nice to see a band than just 3 people. Guru did his thing great though,he was on point the whole show.I’ve uploaded a few vids for u guys, the most are acapella because my phone cant handle the bass.
Oh yeah he also did a few Gangstarr tracks,I went insane when I heard Mass Appeal and filmed it but the quality is just too bad for uploading.

Just To Get A Rep, begleitet von “Stick-Up-Kids Is Out To Tax”-Cuts und der Hit Take It Personal vom Daily Operation Album versetzen einen zurück in die glorreiche Gang Starr Vergangenheit.
