Following the recent announcement of part funding by the Government-backed Technology Strategy Board

Following the recent announcement of part funding by the Government-backed Technology Strategy Board, the partners in the KinerStor project have today announced further details of their collaborative programme to demonstrate the viability of low-cost flywheel hybrid systems.

The KinerStor project will be led by Ricardo and will comprise a consortium of industrial partners including CTG, JCB, Land Rover, SKF, Torotrak and Williams Hybrid Power. The project aims to demonstrate the potential of flywheel-based hybrid systems with the potential for 30 per cent fuel savings (and equivalent reductions in CO2 emissions) at an on-cost of less than £1000, thus enabling the mass-market uptake of hybrid vehicles in price sensitive vehicle applications.

The project will research and de-risk the principle critical flywheel sub-systems individually, then bring them together for system optimisation in two forms of proprietary device; a mechanical/magnetic coupled flywheel system developed by Ricardo (known by the trade name Kinergy), and an electrically coupled unit developed by Williams Hybrid Power. The flywheel systems being developed by the KinerStor consortium partners are ideally suited for potential applications in passenger cars ranging from small, price-sensitive mass-market models through to large luxury SUVs, as well as in low-cost compact energy storage systems for application in industrial and construction equipment.

The KinerStor project team aims to design, build and test a number of prototype units such that on completion, the developed technologies are ready for vehicle-based installation, testing and demonstration.

The KinerStor consortium brings together a critical mass of relevant skills and expertise in specialist areas, including: advanced flywheel systems, focusing on new material technologies including low-cost composite fibres and specialist steels; continuously variable transmissions; bearing and coupling design; drivetrain integration; and volume vehicle manufacturing. The project’s structure will allow for the development of common coretechnology solutions which can be tailored to the individual needs of vehicle manufacturers, maximising potential fuel saving and CO2 emission reduction benefits.

Commenting on today’s announcement, Ricardo group technology director Neville Jackson said: “The development of highly optimised flywheel based technology offers the prospect of the effective and low-cost hybridisation of price-sensitive vehicle applications with consequent benefits to fuel economy and CO2 emissions reduction. Ricardo is pleased to be able to lead the KinerStor consortium which brings together a crucial mass of skills and expertise in this important area of future automotive technology.”

The KinerStor project is supported by an investment from the Government-backed Technology Strategy Board with balancing resources provided by the project partners.

PDM10 is set to provide even greater business opportunities for exhibitors, particularly those looking to secure contracts with OEMs. Plastics manufacturers are now citing poor quality, long shipping times and the cost of tool modification as reasons for dropping overseas contracts in favour of UK tooling suppliers.

GTMA chief executive Julia Moore confirmed the resurgent demand from UK suppliers, “OEMs find UK sourcing more flexible, timely and cost effective solution. The GTMA will use PDM10 to highlight the quality of our own supply organisations and demonstrate to OEMs why sourcing tools from the UK market remains the best option.”

Having recently established a Manufacturing Resource Centre to provide OEMs with an easier and faster route to suppliers, the GTMA is currently working on a number of initiatives for PDM10, which will maximise networking opportunities for both visitors and its members alike.

“The sterling exchange rate is a further factor in favour of UK sourcing,” said Steve Crowhurst, event director. “Injection moulders at PDM09 reported a growing interest by OEMs and I can only see this growing at PDM 10. Now is an excellent time for UK companies to benefit from this resurgent demand.”

In 2009 PDM played host to such prominent OEM visitor names as Aston Martin Lagonda, BMW UK Manufacturing, Bosch, Braitrim, Dyson, Epson, Gillette UK, Honda, Hozelock, JCB, Linpac Allibert, P&G, Pfizer, Philips Avent, Reckitt Benckiser, Tyco Electronics and Unilever.

Turns out that we’ve had 9 new academies join Frog in just the last 6 months and we’re speaking to an awful lot more.

An easy way to save money and protect your bottom line is to make sure that you are performing prope

An easy way to save money and protect your bottom line is to make sure that you are performing proper maintenance on your machines. For any machine, performing simple daily checks can help reduce down time and costly unexpected repairs. Most equipment manufacturers publish service schedules and lubricant recommendations for each machine. The service schedules are based on machine running hours, so it is important as an owner to monitor the use of each machine.

Proper Maintenance begins with a daily check that includes a thorough visual inspection. Owners and operators should also check the engine oil level, engine coolant level, hydraulic oil level, seat belt condition, and instrument panel operation. Depending on the application, additional items like radiator cleanliness, tire pressures, bucket teeth and cutting edge condition may also need to be added to this daily inspection
For lubricants, simply using lubricants with the same specification as those recommended by the manufacturer can save you from expensive repairs. For example, using the wrong transmission oil can cause the transmission clutch plate material to swell or deteriorate. In this case the transmission would have to be removed and disassembled for repair- a costly process.

Other items should be checked or replaced on an “As Needed” basis depending on the machine application. An example would be the air filters, fuel filter, parking brake operation, and hinge point lubrication.
Maintenance items that are not easily accessible tend to be overlooked, thus utilizing a manufacturer supplied Service/Maintenance Checklist is strongly recommended. This is also something that should be kept in mind when purchasing a new machine. Are all daily checks easily accessible?

A machine that is due for service should not be used. Any defects found during regular maintenance checks should be repaired immediately. Following these simple steps can save you from a costly trip to the maintenance shop.

With over 2,500 raffle tickets sold in the annual fundraiser hosted by St. Catherine of Alexandria C

With over 2,500 raffle tickets sold in the annual fundraiser hosted by St. Catherine of Alexandria Catholic Church in Oconomowoc, Wis., Jerry and Cathy Blanton thought they didn’t have a chance at winning. Their eight $50 raffle tickets were purchased primarily as a donation to St. Catherine’s, their home parish. No one was more shocked than the Blantons when one of their tickets was drawn as the grand prize winner during the annual St. Catherine’s Day at the Park.

JCB Dealer Cliff Anglewicz hands the keys to the Blantons

“I couldn’t believe that we had won,” Jerry Blanton said. “I’m not a lucky person. This is the first thing I have ever won. Ironically, they called with the news on my birthday. That was quite the present!”

Jerry and Cathy, along with their son Thomas, are owners of TNT Rescue Systems, Inc. Located in Ashippun, Wis., TNT Rescue Systems manufactures high quality hydraulic rescue tools that rescue workers use to remove roofs and doors at car accident scenes.

After being announced as the winners of the raffle, Jerry and Cathy had to decide which prize to choose: $22,000, a new car, a John Deere tractor or a JCB Skid Steer Loader. Most of the previous raffle winners have chosen the cash, but Jerry and Cathy knew exactly what they wanted. “Cathy and I decided we wanted the JCB Skid Steer Loader before we even bought the raffle tickets,” Blanton explained. “I already have a skid loader, but it was old, and I wanted an upgrade. I know what these machines are capable of. It was an easy decision.”

Jerry and his son upgraded the winning skid steer, provided by fellow parishioner Cliff Anglewicz and his team at Yale Equipment and Services, to a high-flow JCB 170 model and added the snow blower and fork carriage attachments. All items were delivered to the Blantons last week.

The JCB 170 Skid Steer Loader’s compact and maneuverable design will make it easy for the Blantons to perform numerous tasks in both large and confined spaces. With a 50 hp motor and an operating capacity of 1,587 lbs, the JCB 170 is a powerful and durable machine that will benefit the Blanton’s business and farmstead in many ways.

“I’ll use it to clean up our 20-acre farm and perform regular maintenance,” Blanchard said. “It will definitely be used once it starts snowing. I’ll probably use it to clean the snow from the parking lot of my business too.”

According to Jerry and Cathy Blanton’s son Tom, the new JCB 170 is a vast improvement over their old outdated skid steer. “With the JCB’s unique monoboom design, it’s much easier and safer to get in and out of the machine using the side door,” Tom Blanton said. “The servo hand controls make it more comfortable to operate, and I love that the cab is heated- that will come in especially handy as I remove snow during our cold Wisconsin winters!”

Yale Equipment and Services is located in Menomonee Falls, Wis. and Rosemont, Ill. They are a local supplier and servicer of lift trucks, personnel carriers, aerial work platforms and electric forklifts. Offering brands such as JCB, Yale, Genie, Taylor-Dunn and Capacity, Yale Equipment and Services stands by their promise of effective and efficient service.

Rapidly expanding program soon to cover refurbishment of all types of JCB machines

SAVANNAH, GA (November 2, 2009) In an effort to assist both dealers and their customers, leading heavy equipment manufacturer JCB has launched a program aimed at keeping high-quality used JCB machines available within the marketplace. The Encore Program provides dealers with an affordable opportunity to bring used JCB Backhoe Loaders and Loadall Telescopic Handlers back to their original specifications, making them mechanically sound and correcting any cosmetic or other superficial defects.

With the JCB Encore Program, any necessary replacement parts—including non-essential items such as paint and glass—are offered to dealers at a 50% discount off their original list prices. After dealers have made their repairs, a JCB representative inspects the machines to ensure the equipment meets the Encore Program’s standards for refurbishment. Those machines that meet or exceed those standards then receive a 90-day powertrain warranty from JCB. According to Mike Werner, vice president of customer support for JCB North America, the Encore Program answers a tremendous need within the heavy equipment industry.

“With the Encore Program, rental equipment dealers can refurbish their used fleets at a discount rather than dumping their older equipment at an auction and getting less in return,” Werner said. “Encore makes it affordable for dealers to bring these machines back to factory specs and then sell them to their existing customers at a profit. This increases the resale value of all JCB machines, which protects the investment of all JCB machine owners. Meanwhile, the customer gets a high-quality machine for far less than the cost of a brand new one.”

Dealer reaction to the Encore Program has been tremendously positive. Jim Cox, president of Casey Equipment in Chicago, Illinois, believes the Encore Program has generated additional sales and revenue for his business.

“The Encore Program effectively raises the resale value of our used JCBs,” Cox said. “We’ve been able to provide customers on a tight budget with an excellent piece of equipment they might not otherwise have been able to afford. It’s a win-win situation.”

While the Encore Program is currently only servicing JCB Backhoe Loaders and Loadall Telescopic Handlers, the company plans to expand the program to include all JCB machines—including excavators, rough terrain forklifts, track loaders and wheel loaders—by the end of 2009.

JCB’s Encore Program is just one more example of the company’s continued dedication to helping its customers “get the job done.” For more information about JCB’s industry-leading equipment for the construction, agriculture, industrial and waste/recycling markets or to find a dealer near you, call JCB’s North American Headquarters in Savannah at (912) 447-2000 or visit www.jcbna.com.

Maeve McPhail

Maeve McPhail was recognized for her outstanding business achievements as an Irish American living in the South by Irish America Magazine. The New York based publication recognized an elite class of 9 individuals at the third annual Stars of the South event hosted in Atlanta GA. McPhail’s dynamic personality, quick wit and irresistible Irish charm have helped make her the Star that she is today.

There are not too many women who can tell you the specifications of sixteen different categories of heavy construction equipment and operate each of them with precision, but Maeve McPhail is certainly one of them. As the US Southeast Regional District Sales Manager for JCB, Inc., the third largest heavy equipment manufacturer in the world, McPhail is the first woman to rise through the ranks and ever hold such a position in her field with the company. Showing her grit in the traditionally male dominated industry for the past seven years, McPhail is responsible for helping JCB achieve record sales levels, with gross revenue measured in the hundreds of millions of dollars. Prior to helping JCB North America by promoting market share growth for her regional dealerships, her sales skills were honed working for a famous of Irish Brands, Guinness Imports. Beginning in 1999, she was a part of the Metropolitan New York Division where she also achieved record year over year sales for the hallmark Irish. On top of this, she was responsible for establishing some of the largest accounts in the Guinness portfolio in the highly competitive New York City market.

In addition to her professional work, McPhail serves on the Board of Directors for the Community Health and Development Fund (C.H.A.D. Fund), a DC-based international non-profit dedicated to alleviating poverty in the Republic of Chad in central Africa through the creation of basic infrastructure-primarily roads and water-supply projects. Her involvement with philanthropic and civic causes began early in her life. She is a co-founder of Mercy Mission to Africa, a non-profit organization that focuses on raising funds to purchasing computers for students and schools in the former conflict zones of Sierra Leone, Africa. This organization enabled university students in challenging environments to connect with young scholars in the United States for idea exchanges on Democracy and aiding them as they transitioned to a post war economy. She has also been an active member of the Native American fund, rebuilding homes for people of the Cherokee Nation in the Smokey Mountains of NC.

A native of Drogheda, County Louth, McPhail and her family moved to New York back in the mid 1980’s. The daughter of Gertrude and Lawrence, she went from The Academy of the Holy Angels All Girls College Prep School to University College Dublin, where she majored in Business. While there she was head of the International Students Society and played rugby for the University College Dublin’s Women’s Club. She returned to the United States to complete her Bachelors Degree in Political Science and Economics at Rutgers College University in New Jersey.

McPhail currently lives Thunderbolt, Georgia, a small town outside of Savannah in the coastal Low Country. Maeve is known for her talent with an Irish fiddle, is an aspiring sailor, an active member in the Savannah Heritage Society, as well as a lover of Golf and tennis.

The donated 20 tonne JCB JS200 tracked excavator gets to work in Padang, West Sumatra. JCB is donati

The donated 20 tonne JCB JS200 tracked excavator gets to work in Padang, West Sumatra.

JCB is donating equipment worth $250,000 to help the disaster relief effort in the city of Padang following the devastating earthquake that struck off the Indonesian island of Sumatra on 30 September 2009.

The donation of a 20-tonne JS200 heavy excavator and a 3CX backhoe loader was offered by JCB Chairman Sir Anthony Bamford in response to an appeal from the Indonesian authorities for foreign aid to help the relief effort.

The machines are being made available to Satkorlak, the disaster response unit of the Indonesian authorities by PT Altrak 1978, the JCB dealer in Indonesia. Three Altrak operators and a mechanic accompanied the machines from Jakarta to Padang to ensure rapid deployment with service and parts support. They will also provide any training that might be required by local operators so that the authorities leading the relief effort can secure the full benefit of the machines’ versatility.

Sir Anthony said: “Thousands of people in West Sumatra have been affected by this dreadful earthquake and there is a desperate need for heavy equipment to assist in the clear up operations and to help alleviate large-scale human suffering. The excavator and backhoe loader will be put to use straightaway in Padang and will hopefully help local people to rebuild their lives in the aftermath of this awful disaster.

“JCB machines proved invaluable in the aftermath of the Asian Tsunami and I do hope that this donation will make a difference in the same way.”

The contribution to the aid effort follows a series of other JCB machinery donations in recent years to other parts of the world hit by natural disasters, including the 2008 earthquake in Sichuan province in China, when six backhoe loaders worth over $600,000 and a team of operators were sent from the company’s factory in Shanghai to help the clean-up effort in the region.

Editor’s Notes:
JCB has a history of assisting regions across the world hit by natural disasters. The value of the donation to help after the Asian Tsunami in 2004 exceeded $2 million and the machines were deployed in southern India, Sri Lanka and Indonesia. Some of the JCB machines that were provided to Oxfam in Indonesia after the 2004 Asian Tsunami are being redeployed to help in the relief effort in West Sumatra. These machines have been in constant use on post-Tsunami clean-up and remediation projects during the past five years and three of them have been sent to the disaster zone by Oxfam to help the current relief effort.

In 1999 JCB also helped with the earthquake disaster in Turkey, and in 2005 it joined a global relief effort in earthquake-torn India and Pakistan by donating over $1 million worth of machines. In November 2007 JCB donated a backhoe loader to help rebuild parts of Peru damaged by an earthquake which killed 650 people, left 1,000 wounded and around 30,000 people homeless. The same year JCB donated $200,000 worth of machines to help with the clear-up operation in a region of the Philippines devastated by a typhoon.

JCB Full Line of Light Equipment JCB is further expanding its robust North American equipment range

JCB Full Line of Light Equipment

JCB is further expanding its robust North American equipment range with the addition of JCB Light Equipment. This exciting new product line features 32 models representing three distinct product categories: Light Compaction, Hydraulic Power Packs and Hydraulic Hand Tools. Because North America represents 27% of the total world market for light equipment, the addition of JCB Light represents a significant market opportunity for JCB. By offering this new product line, JCB and its expanding dealer network can better serve North American customers with a complete portfolio of job site solutions.

Light Compaction
The Light Compaction product category of JCB Light includes rammers, a single drum roller and plate compactors, both forward and reversible.

JCB VMR - Vibrator Rammer

The JCB VMF forward plate compactor series has been specifically designed for easy, effective compaction of asphalt, soil and other non-cohesive (or less-cohesive) materials. Built for fast travel and high productivity, these machines feature powerful Honda engines (Hatz Diesel on the VMF 130D) and a wear-resistant, high-grade cast tamping plate for optimum durability. With three models to choose from, these machines are built to tackle a wide range of compaction jobs. All models are available with an optional sprinkler and throttle kit.

The JCB VMP reversible plate compactors series provides a choice of models to suit every type of compaction application. All units are hydrostatically operated and designed to effectively compact granular and cohesive material. With both reversing and stationary features, these machines allow you to carry out compaction tasks in confined areas where turning would otherwise be difficult or impossible. All VMP models feature a single forward/reverse control lever as well as specially balanced and isolated guide bars to protect the operator against hand-arm vibration effects. To extend product life, the JCB VMP series is equipped with lifetime-lubricated vibrator bearings along with a wear-resistant, high-grade cast damping plate.

The VMR ‘Jumping Jack’ Rammers Series features a low-maintenance design that allows the machine to operate for longer periods of time, resulting in greater productivity. Strong and sturdy, these rammers have a low center of gravity with a four-column guide for more stable operation. In addition, these machines generate a horizontal force to propel themselves forward, making them easier for operators to handle. The rammers feature special damping plate material that acts as a shock absorber, as well as a protected air cleaner on top of the machine for even easier operation and maintenance.

Designed for the compaction of granular and asphalt materials, JCB’s VMS Series Single Drum Roller is ideal for use in confined spaces that cannot be accessed by traditional larger rollers. Compact and maneuverable, VMS Single Drum Rollers are very popular with maintenance contractors for small asphalt reinstatement and ground care applications.

Hydraulic Power Packs
JCB Light Equipment Hydraulic Power Pack range includes four models—HP200, HP300, HP400 and HP500. Hydraulic power packs are earning a reputation for better overall performance and reliability than rival pneumatic and electric options. By combining high performance with a compact, user-friendly design, hydraulic power packs offer a level of efficiency that’s unmatched by other power sources.

HP300 with Disc Cutter

Conventional pneumatic power sources require a large and typically expensive engine that significantly restricts access in tight or confined work spaces. Although they have a far smaller engine than those used by a typical air compressor, JCB’s hydraulic power packs can deliver equally powerful tool performance. As a result of their compact size, they can be easily stored, transported and moved around a job site. Furthermore, typical start up costs of a hydraulic power pack are half those of a comparable pneumatic power source. JCB’s hydraulic power packs feature a power-on-demand system that reduces off-load engine speeds to idle, resulting in lower noise levels, less engine wear and decreased fuel consumption–and increased productivity. The JCB Hydraulic Power Pack range also features a unique suction circuit that eliminates pulsation damage to the cooler.

Hydraulic Hand Tools
JCB now also offers a range of hydraulic hand tools designed to run off JCB Power Packs or the handheld tool circuits (HTC) available on a number of JCB machines. The new range of hand tools includes breakers, pumps, saws, drills, wrenches and augers. Designed for a long trouble-free life, each tool offers an impressive power-to-weight ratio while at the same time being light, manageable and quiet to operate.

HP400/20-30 and Breaker in action

The JCB breaker range consists of five models featuring sturdy cast steel construction for strength and only two moving parts for exceptional reliability and a long service life. JCB has a patented ultra-low vibration system that reduces hand-arm vibration by 60% when compared with a fixed handle breaker. Hydraulic breakers hit harder than the air equivalent, with 80% of the power being transmitted to the tool as compared to 20%-30% with a pneumatic system. The low-vibration breakers give operators excellent control while being more comfortable to use.

Also included in the hydraulic hand tool category are the new JCB pumps. JCB is offering two distinct pump types to match the needs of different applications: trash pumps and submersible pumps. The trash pumps are capable of handling water with mud, leaves and other solids up to 3 inches diameter, while the submersible pumps can be used in clear water applications. Both options are self-priming, and being hydraulically-powered, are self-lubricating and will run dry without damage. All pumps come with a lifting lug for safe and accurate placement. The submersible pumps have flat-faced quick-release, dripless couplings for speedy attachment changes.

Other new hydraulic tools include three types of drills: diamond core drills, hydraulic drills and impact drills; 2 types of impact wrenches; disc cutters and a two-man auger.

JCB will take a multi-tiered approach to the distribution of this new line. Light Equipment will be sold with the construction equipment range through the company’s expanding dealer network in North America. JCB will also sell direct to national account customers and utilize a team of independent manufacturer representatives to bring the product to market.

The introduction of the extensive new JCB Light product line is just another example of JCB’s continued dedication to helping dealers and customers “get the job done.” For more information about JCB’s industry-leading equipment for the construction, agriculture, industrial and waste/recycling markets, or to find a dealer near you, call JCB’s North American Headquarters in Savannah at (912) 447-2000 or visit www.jcbna.com.

JCB 8065 Mini Excavator

Displayed in North America for the first time here at ICUEE, the new 8065 RTS (reduced tail swing) Excavator – launched earlier this year at Intermat – gives contractors and operators a more powerful, safer and versatile machine. Replacing the 8060, the new 8065 is JCB’s most productive six-ton machine ever.

JCB midi excavators are well known for their performance, controllability, serviceability and versatility. Like the 8055 launched late last year, the new 8065 model builds on these core strengths and also features a new cab for unrivalled operator comfort and visibility.

54.3hp, Tier III Isuzu Turbo engine.

Powering the 8065 is a new 54.3hp, Tier III Isuzu Turbo engine. This engine, along with a near five-inch reduction of the machine’s tail swing, makes the 8065 even more productive when operating in confined spaces.

The new excavator also features a heavy-duty dipper to give improved bucket and dipper breakout forces. Its maximum dig depth of 14’3” and dump height of 14’0” constitute a class-leading digging range. The improved bucket breakouts increase the 8065’s productivity, and ultimately, the customer’s return on investment. The single-piece wraparound dipper design reduces the need for weld points, increasing durability, and the easily accessible dig-end hoses are routed through the kingpost, protecting it from damage. The 8065 also features a new counterweight design that has further reduced the tail swing to seven inches.

The 8065 incorporates an improved undercarriage structure which includes upgraded track motors. With powerful dozing capability, excellent tracking performance and two-speed tracking, peaking at 3.3 mph, the JCB boasts improved mobility and approximately 17,500 lbf of tractive effort.

By combining automotive levels of comfort and styling with innovative new excavator design features and technology, the JCB 8065 exemplifies the very best in cab environments — a feature that’s become the hallmark of JCB equipment. As seen on the 8055, the deluxe cab is isolated from the swing frame, forming an isolated pod structure with benefits in terms of decreased cab noise and vibrations. The cab also includes a high-backed suspension seat and easy-to-use pilot-operated controls that move with the operator for a more effective working position and all-day comfort. The unusually large cab features a large-fold back door and well-positioned grab rails for easy entry and exit from the machine. Air-conditioning comes standard.

Dual pilot controls and proportional auxiliary flow deliver precision control, including low-flow and high-flow functions which improve the machine’s versatility. Electronic throttle control with auto idle function improves fuel economy and ease of use, while load-sensing hydraulics guarantee efficient and safe use of all functions.

All service points are easily accessed for convenient daily and periodical checks. Serviceability is also enhanced by the longitudinal engine positioning, and service intervals are set at 500 hours. To maximize the machine’s earning potential, the 8065 is compatible with all existing JCB 8080 ZTS, 3CX and 4CX buckets along with a vast range of existing JCB attachments.

The new 8065 joins an unrivalled lineup of mini and midi excavators from JCB. From the ultra-compact 1,929 lbs Micro 8008 to the 18,960 pound 8080ZTS, JCB offers 10 models in total.
This broad spread of excavators includes six full zero-tail swing (ZTS) machines and a number of reduced-tail swing models, offering JCB customers a choice of weights and specifications to match their requirements. The range also includes the popular 8008, the 8018 mini, along with the 8025ZTS, 8030ZTS, 8035ZTS, 8040ZTS, 8045ZTS and 8055ZTS.

SAVANNAH, GA ─ (October 7, 2009) ─ Already the world’s leading producer of backhoe loaders, JCB has made substantial improvements to 2 core models from its rugged backhoe loader product line—the 3CX and 4CX- in an effort to continue to grow its presence in North America.

The JCB 3CX and 4CX backhoe loaders have undergone some noteworthy changes designed to enhance both performance and operator experience. Perhaps the most significant of these changes is the implementation of JCB’s innovative EASYCONTROL seat-mounted servo control system. According to Jim Blower, senior product manager at JCB’s North American Headquarters, the EASYCONTROL system gives operators back all of the feel and speed of a traditional manual controlled machine with all the comfort and low fatigue levels of servo controlled systems. Essentially, EASYCONTROL gives operators the best of both worlds.

Interior shot of a 3CX Backhoe Loader. Notice the EASYCONTROLS.

JCB was the first manufacturer to offer seat mounted hydraulic over hydraulic servo controls I a backhoe loader. This feature allows a user to operate the backhoe in the standard rear facing position in addition to allowing the operator to dig at an angle, allowing him to look directly over his work site; a feature that is particularly useful for ditch work. This key feature, combined with the benefits of reduced operator fatigue, increased visibility, and excavator-like productivity, has been further enhanced with the new EASYCONTROL system.

Speed is improved in the backhoe operation by changing the excavator valve to a full-flow valve block rather than a flow-sharing valve block. “A flow-sharing valve block limits the amount of oil available to each cylinder,” Blower said. “Switching these machines to full-flow valve blocks allows them to distribute the maximum amount of oil available to any cylinder, making single service cycle time faster and giving the operator total control over the backhoe’s speed.”

The EASYCONTROL system also improves operator/joystick feedback by changing the hydraulic circuit in the backhoe from a “closed circuit” to an “open circuit.” With an open hydraulic circuit, neutral circuit oil flows through the valve-block any time the engine is running and turning the pumps, making hydraulic power available on demand. Lever movement determines the amount of power available at the bucket tooth, allowing the operator to control how much force is applied to a given obstacle in the ground.

In addition to the implementation of the EASYCONTROL system, the JCB 3CX and 4CX backhoe loader models now also feature a stronger, more durable fuel tank. Now made from a highly resistant composite material, the fuel tank is less susceptible to rust, minimizing the risk of costly repairs required when rust enters a backhoe loader’s fuel system. This composite material is also impact-resistant, enhancing the fuel tank’s resistance to damage that can occur on the job site. A steel tank guard protects the underside of the tank by deflecting any foreign objects that may come into contact with it, and the steps to enter or exit the machine are mounted to the backhoe loader’s frame—not to the fuel tank itself, further limiting the possibility of damage during day-to-day use.

Since introducing the backhoe loader to the world nearly 60 years ago, JCB has continued to perfect this invaluable machine. The company’s recent improvements to the JCB 3CX and 4CX models are prime examples of JCB’s continued dedication to helping its customers “get the job done.”

JCB announces Dougherty Equipment Company as the new full line JCB dealer covering all of South Caro

JCB announces Dougherty Equipment Company as the new full line JCB dealer covering all of South Carolina with the exception of Hampton, Jasper and Beaufort counties. Dougherty Equipment will rent and sell the full range of JCB construction equipment through 4 full service locations. They bring over 100 certified technicians throughout South Carolina to ensure the best customer service available. “We are pleased to add Dougherty Equipment Company to our growing dealer network,” said John Patterson, chairman and chief executive officer of JCB Inc. “Their commitment to the customer and the reputation they have in their market make them a valuable partner. We look forward to a long and successful relationship.”

Much like JCB, Dougherty Equipment Company is a family owned business. Mike Dougherty, the owner and CEO has over 40 years of experience in the equipment industry. Starting his career with Yale Lift Trucks as an account salesman in the Chicago area, he quickly gained experience and grew his role within the organization. He moved to North Carolina to open his first dealership in Greensboro over 25 years ago. With a reputation built on hard work and dedication to the customer, Dougherty knows what it takes to get the job done. He is involved in the day to day business and takes the open door approach. His employees and customers know they can call him any time. “I have one policy- take care of the customer- It’s just that simple. I know that it’s the customer that pays the bills, not me- so they are the center of everything we do”, says Dougherty.

It was Dougherty Equipment Company’s desire to expand their offerings to meet their customer’s needs that attracted them to the JCB product line. Over the years they have seen their customers’ needs grow to include a product offering outside the traditional industrial sector which they served. JCB’s extensive range of equipment filled that need and complimented their existing products. “I had peripheral knowledge of JCB and began following them more closely when they built their state of the art manufacturing facility in Savannah. I have been looking for ways to grow my business and when I heard the success one of my fellow Yale dealers was having by adding the JCB range of equipment, I saw the tremendous opportunity it presented in South Carolina”, says Mike Dougherty. Steve Strenck, VP of Sales and Marketing for Dougherty Equipment shares Dougherty’s enthusiasm. “I was impressed by the passion JCB and their employees had for the product, the company and the industry. Our company has a reputation as a provider of high quality product and service and JCB fit perfectly with our principles and market position.”
