NEW YORK — Most folks would get starstruck around Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.

Not Mélanie Laurent, Pitt’s French co-star in the war flick Inglourious Basterds.

Being on the red carpet at the film’s premiere with the couple was “completely crazy,” concedes the slightly standoffish actress. “But you don’t feel like, ‘Oh my God.’ Everybody is crazy, hysterical, but it’s not real. You just have fun. They are so cool. They always say to me, ‘Hi, you look great.’ “

She’s also doing pretty great. In Basterds, Laurent, 26, plays one of the film’s pivotal roles. She’s the young Jewish girl Shosanna, who witnesses the massacre of her family by Nazis and flees to Paris, where she runs a cinema and develops her own revenge plan.

“I’m very close to her,” Laurent says of her character. “You need to be strong to do that job, to have an actor’s life. And you need to be fragile. I’m a little bit French and rebel sometimes, a little bit like Shosanna, and I’m Jewish.”

Basterds might be the first time domestic viewers see Laurent, but she’s an established actress and director in her native France. She directed 2008’s De moins en moins, which was an official selection at the Cannes Film Festival, and in 2006, Laurent won the most promising actress César, France’s version of the Oscar, for her film Je vais bien, ne t’en fais pas (Don’t Worry, I’m Fine). And she’s been acting since 1999’s Un pont entre deux rives (The Bridge), where she starred opposite Gérard Depardieu.

So the hoopla surrounding a starring turn in a splashy war drama, directed by Quentin Tarantino and co-starring Pitt, leaves her a little flummoxed. She says she has no intention of making Hollywood movies just to be famous, or generate quick cash.

“It’s not that I do not care. I have amazing parts in France. The dream was just to make a movie with Tarantino,” she says.

The experience, Laurent says, was “so beautiful. Shosanna was a great part and very important. I was stressed out for the first meeting, and Quentin told me he was more stressed out than me. He’s been looking for his Shosanna for eight years. She’s so typically Tarantino’s heroine. She’s strong and fragile at the same time. She wants to kill Hitler. She’s my favorite woman in the world.”

Back home in Paris, Laurent is a workaholic. “Holiday? Is like, what? I’m a hyperactive girl, so it may be boring for me to be on the beach doing nothing. I just need to find a place for three weeks and work but sleep in the morning, maybe write a little bit, have a glass of red wine,” the single actress says. “That’s my perfect holiday. But it’s not in my plan right now.”

She’s recording and producing a rock music CD. Plus, she plans to complete another screenplay in September but doesn’t reveal the title. In the future, “I want to direct again. The perfect life would to be have an amazing part every year and to spend all my free time to just write,” she says.

Surely, she has down time for something fun? “I’m dreaming of a day off, with my friend, shopping for my apartment. I just need to have time to buy little details. Oh, and my cat is here. Do you remember me, baby? He doesn’t want to talk to me again.”

In celebration of  the “Mahalin Sariling Sining Street Art Festival”, the Alliance Francaise de Manille and Gropo Reposo present a French film screening of “Je Vais Bien, Ne T’en Fais Pas” (Don’t Worry, I’m Fine) on May 31, Sunday.

The French drama film which was an adaptation of the novel by Olivier Adam, was directed by Philippe Lioret. It was first shown in 2006 and bagged major recognitions and awards in Cesar Awards.  

The story was about a girl named Lili in search of her twin brother, Loic who left after an argument with their father. She receives letters from her brother and followed its trail with her brother’s friend, Thomas. During the search, Thomas and Lili fell in love. And together, they discovered the truth about Loic. 

The screening of the movie will be held at AFM Auditorium, 2/F AFM Building, 209 Nicanor Garcia Street, Bel-Air II, Makati City. It is open to the public and admission is free. So if you have no plans this weekend, bring your family and friends to the place and watch this film.

8 femmes, L’ auberge espagnole, Le fabuleux destin d’Amélie Poulain, La haine, Un long dimanche de fiançailles, … het zijn allemaal Franse non-Hollywoodfilms met een eigenzinnig sfeertje die bij de meeste cinefielen wel een belletje doen rinkelen. Met Je vais bien, ne t’en fais pas heeft Philippe Lioret een film gemaakt die vlug in dat lijstje zal worden opgenomen.

Elise “Lili” Tellier (Mélanie Laurent)  is een negentienjarige meisje dat met haar ouders en haar tweelingbroer Loïc in een buitenwijk van Parijs woont. De film begint met de scène waarin Lili net terugkomt van Barcelona. Wat op het eerste gezicht een gezellig weerzien lijkt, wordt algauw het begin van een dramatisch verhaal.

Tweelingbroer Loïc is bij haar thuiskomst namelijk met de noorderzon verdwenen. Haar vader (Kad Merad) – die de ganse film de boeman speelt - heeft volgens het relaas van de moeder (Isabelle Renauld) een zoveelste harde woordenwisseling met de jongen gehad. Lili probeert haar broer meerdere keren te bellen, maar hij lijkt wel van de aardbol verdwenen.

Onbegrip, verdriet en totale wanhoop nemen vanaf dan de overmacht van Lili. Hoe kan haar broer haar zomaar in de steek laten, zonder nog iets van hem te laten horen? Dagen gaan voorbij en Lili heeft het lastiger en lastiger. Haar levenslust is verdwenen en ze krijgt bovendien geen hap voedsel meer door de keel. Ze takelt af en moet worden opgenomen in een psychiatrische instelling.

Op het moment dat ze ten dode is opgeschreven (na meer dan acht dagen niet te eten), komt er licht aan het einde van de tunnel. Loïc heeft haar een brief geschreven waarin hij zich verontschuldigt. Hij spuwt hun vader uit en zegt dat hij de oorzaak is van alles.

Vanaf dan krijgt Lili geregeld een brief van Loïc. Hij reist van hier naar ginder door Frankrijk en houdt zijn zus wat op de hoogte van zijn bezigheden. In iedere brief kleineert hij hun vader.

De brieven zijn Lili’s redding. Ze komt er langzaamaan weer bovenop en gaat op zoek naar haar broer. Een vruchtenloze zoektocht weliswaar, tot ze op een dag een toevallige, pijnlijke ontdekking doet.

Voormalig geluidstechnicus Philippe Lioret is met Je vais bien, ne t’en fais pas niet aan zijn proefstuk toe. In ‘93 startte hij zijn carrière als regisseur met de luchtige tragikomedie Tombés du ciel. Liefde werkte hij als thema verder uit in Mademoiselle (2000) en L’équipier (2004), met telkens Sandrine Bonnaire in de hoofdrol. Voor Je vais bien, ne t’en fais pas mocht revelatie Mélanie Laurent in de huid van Lili kruipen. Terecht, want ze zette een knappe acteerprestatie neer.

In Je vais bien, ne t’en fais pas benadert Lioret de liefde op een andere, originelere manier. Hij baseert zich hiervoor op het gelijknamige boek van de Franse schrijver Olivier Adam. Liefde is deze keer geen passie en lust tussen man en vrouw, maar de speciale onafscheidelijke band van een tweeling.

Lioret hanteert zoals in L’équipier een sobere, eenvoudige filmtechniek die het verhaal alleen maar ten goede komt. Zijn realistische en pure filmtechnische benadering van een op het eerste gezicht banaal Frans gezin, schept een gevoelige sfeer met een dramatische ondertoon. Dat alles wordt nog versterkt door de soundtrack (U-turn van Aaron), die als leidraad de stem van Loïc weergeeft.

Je vais bien, ne t’en fais pas zal door de echte actie- en Hollywoodlovers misschien als langdradig worden ervaren, maar zij die openstaan voor een orgineel, intigrerend en menselijk verhaal zullen in deze film zeker hun gading vinden.
