Today in ‘In the Spotlight’: Jean-Charles de Castelbajac. Not your average designer, but then again is there such a thing as an average designer?

For his summer 2010 collection he created T-shirt with prints of Donald Duck, dresses with a parrot on the shoulder, outfits with a very high pirate value and he gave most of the models a little hat with gauze. Yes, even the men.

His fashion can be described as very cartoon-esque with a touch of humour. Not for everyone, but when it’s your thing, you’ll love it.

Personnellement, je n’ai jamais réussi à construire un truc potable avec des Lego. Que ce soit un véhicule, une base pour mes personnages ou des créations abstraites, tout ce que mes mains parvenaient à assembler ressemblait vaguement à un tas difforme.

Alors quand je vois cette plaque Link et Zelda (époque NES) réalisée par Naneto avec les petites briques de couleur de notre enfance, forcément, je pleure. Parce que c’est beau, et parce que je me dis que j’étais vraiment bidon quand j’étais jeune. D’autant plus quand je tombe la minute suivante sur la casquette New Era réalisée par Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, que je trouve tout simplement dingue. C’est décidé, à Noël je rachète une boîte de briques.

When we spotted this new trend on Coolhunting.com, we thougt it might actually become a recession-hit. Why not make accessories of LEGO-pieces. We used to be creative with LEGO when we were little (yes, even girls play with LEGO), and if Jean Charles de Castelbajac can pull it off, why can’t we, right?So if you have a little brother, cousin, nephew, even the kid of one of your girlfriends, then gather some pieces of their LEGO (don’t worry, they will not miss 5 pieces…) and start building a necklace, bracelet, or even sow it on a garment.

Katsui graduated from Central Saint Martins College after studying at Parsons The New School for Design. Yagi graduated from Doshisha University and Central Saint Martins College.
The brand, mintdesigns was launched in 2001. They have been in Tokyo Collection since ‘03 S/S. The awards they won include the Moet et Chandon New Designer’s Award in 2005. In 2007, mintdesigns garage store opened in Shibuya PARCO. They presented their collection in the 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT THIS PLAY! show. In 2008, they presented the opening show at São Paulo Fashion Week for ‘09 S/S. Both designers currently hold positions as guest professors at the Faculty of Art and Design at Osaka Seikei University. In 2009 they presented their collection at the Milano Salone TOKYO FIBER ‘09.Mint Designs turned out a dainty crop of dresses featuring details such as shimmery stripes, textured fabric and quirky graphics. One frock featured a darling print of tiny Charlie Chaplins, while another showcased circular cutouts along the sides.

After the exhibition at the Petit Palais, the Museum of Fine Arts in Paris, save the date of the Designer Frimousses dolls auction on 19 November at Drouot Montaigne, Paris’s prestigious auction house. Since 2003, fashion designers and artists have worked to create something beautiful to help children of Darfur, crafting dolls that become veritable works of art. The whole amount raised during the auction will support the vaccination programme in one of the regions most devastated by the deadly conflict there. Today, more than 4.7 million people are affected, of which 2.2 million are children. Thanks to the Designer Frimousse operation, under the aegis of Laeticia Hallyday, ambassador for UNICEF France, UNICEF carries out the fight for children vaccination every year in the region of Darfur. Vaccination, a method that is both very effective and inexpensive, would prevent these deadly diseases from a very young age (diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, polio) and would eradicate this scourge that affects thousands of children every day. The 2008 sale raised 219,130 Euros, used directly on the ground to finance emergency : in the Darfur region, 260,000 children and 195,000 pregnant women received vaccines. Don’t forget these dolls will be sold at auction on 19 November at Drouot Montaigne:

Après l’exposition au Petit Palais, n’oubliez pas la vente aux enchères des Frimousses de créateurs  demain: 19 Novembre, à Drouot Montaigne, Paris. Depuis 2003, créateurs de mode et artistes créent des poupées de collection uniques, de véritables oeuvres d’art pour venir en aide aux enfants du Darfour. La totalité des fonds collectés lors de la vente aux enchères soutiendra les programmes de vaccination dans une des régions les plus dévastées par des conflits meurtriers. Soit aujourd’hui, 4,7 millions de personnes, dont 2,2 millions d’enfants affectées. Grâce à l’opération Frimousses de Créateurs sous l’égide de Laeticia Hallyday, Marraine de l’Unicef France, l’Unicef se bat tous les ans pour la vaccination des enfants dans la région du Darfour. Car la vaccination est un moyen très efficace et peu couteux de prévenir et d’éradiquer les maladies invalidantes meurtrières dès le plus jeune âge (diphtérie, tétanos, coqueluche, poliomyélite, rougeole). L’édition Frimousses de Créateurs 2008 a permis d’envoyer sur le terrain 219 130 € pour financer les activités de vaccination en urgence. 260 000 enfants et 198 000 femmes enceintes recevront des vaccins. As I was surfing on the internet I have found a blogsite with Jean-Charles de Castelbajac’s apparels designed for Canon in 2007. At that point I thought I should make a little retrospective photo gallery to let you know that among other european designers, like Castelbajac or Matthew Williamson I was also invited by Canon to design a collection for their ‘We Speak Image’ campaign. I was teemed up with  clothes designer Bodza Team to design the hungarian collection of 6 outfits made out of Canon’s printing fabrics and papers. After finishing the collection we had a fashion show. I’m happy and also very proud that I’ve been chosen by Canon to represent Hungary with a creative collection. Our aim was to make something hungarian: feminine and colorful mixed up with traditional tailoring. The result was a fashionable yet experimental collection of 6 outfits.

AMAZING!! This LEGO kitchen was designed by Paris-based Simon Pillard & Philippe Rosetti, the Munchausen LEGO Kitchen was created around an IKEA kitchen island, which over a week they cover with more than 20,000 LEGO pieces. What an amazing result, I don’t know about you but if I had 20,000 LEGO pieces and a whole load of patience then I’d love to make a LEGO creation!

Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, the designer behind some of Lady Gaga’s interesting outfits, is the latest designer to be inspired by the 80s and Lego.

The JCDC Lego collection features colour-blocked designs, primary colours, Lego chokers, Lego embellished baseball caps, Lego everything.

Also known as JC/DC, the Parisian fashion designer known for his whimsical, vivacious fashions also spear-headed what we now as streetwear. Not that you’d particularly wear Jean’s line as you would say, Kid Robot or Rockers NYC but the influence of monsieur JC/DC is omnipresent throughout a younger generation of designers indeed. Even more contemporary streetwear high-enders like Jeremy Scott and Cassette Playa inadvertently display his inspiration on their own collections.

There’s not many that have the audacity to be as ‘out there’ as he can. And what a new generation of fashion followers love most could possibly be the lego inspired pieces from his JC In the Sky With Diamonds in his Spring/Summer 2009 collection. We have yet to see anything else like it.

Au détour de la rue de Montmartre, petit clin d’œil au fan de mode excentrique :

Jeudi soir,  mon regard s’est fait littéralement happé par un trio de paires de chaussures. Trop décalées, trop colorées, trop animales… trop top !

Le trio de shoes infernal

En me rendant à un vernissage, je suis passée devant la vitrine de freelance, rue de Montmartre.  Troisrois paires de chaussures ont littéralement capté mon attention !

La première est surchargée au point que ça en devient cocasse. Avec les clous, dont je vous parlais la semaine passé, ses boucles et son bout vernis. On aurait dit un talon qui fait de l’autodérision.

La deuxième est extraordinaire : signée Castelbajac, reconnaissable à ses couleurs pop, une véritable botte country habillée pour le cirque.  Top tendance avec un legging noir !

Et enfin, le meilleur pour la fin, le talon déguisé en léopard ou comment être super originale avec le léopard que tout le monde a déjà. Drôle et animal, cet escarpin donnera un ton enjoué et tonique à votre tenue, si vous osez le porter !

Voilà, petit délire perso, mais je les trouvais excellentes surtout réunies sur le même présentoir !

Une jolie trouvaille pour vous rendre à l’événement “ce qui fait courir les filles”.

My opinion of the fashion world is largely a negative one. Often pretentious and insulting, I find it highly uninteresting the majority of the time. Yet this guy seems to have constructed the clothing line of my dreams. Go figure.
