Il suo entusiasmo e la sua motivazione gli sono valsi la fiducia della casa madre e sempre maggiore indipendenza: i risultati lo hanno premiato. Paolo ha sviluppato una linea di piatti che sono il prototipo di un’ “alta cucina campana”, fatta di ricette e abbinamenti storici, confronti di materie prime popolari e nobili, tecniche nuove.

Stucchevole, stupefacente, una cucina che resce a combinare gli antichi sapori della terra Irpina con nuovi modi di fare gastronomia, senza mai eccedere, un ottima eleganza sia della presentazione sia dell’ambiente non posso aggiungere altro, altrimenti rischierei di fare della pubblicita’ gratuita, ma con sincerita’ pura se vi trovate da quelle parti andateci! ne vale la pena!

Well, i will start with my latest adventure.

As usual, every Eid – our major religious celebration – we go to Jeddah – thats the second city in Saudi arabia – we had a lovely time. The day before we return back to Riyadh – thats the capital – it RAINED. It was just rain, regular rain for 4 hours, thats it, thats all it took for the upcoming catastrophe.

Anyway, the next day, which was our departure date, the flight was at 8.45 pm on Saudia Airlines. As good travelers we were – my mother and I – at the airport at exactly 7 pm. And all hell broke loose, the airport was in chaos, people were screaming everywhere. I went to the first class counter, which was actually six counters in a first class section area. Me being this really organized person, I stood in a line, where only one man stood in front of me. This man was from the Philipines, while he stood there three of his friends just found him, they tapped him, said all their hi’s and hello’s and hugs, he told them give me your tickets and passports i am already the first in the line. WHAT ?? EXCUSE ME ?? WHAT AM I IN FRONT OF YOU ?? A BIG LUMP OF MEAT ??? you just ignore me, bypass me, fly over me, me TAHANI, the big tahani, i am not a pittete person who you might just not see me. Well anyway i smiled and let it pass by, its OK these are his friends after all. So, I stood and waited, and waited, and waited, and waited, and…..hay, something is wrong…i saw another line where only one man was standing, I went to stand behind him and he was talking loudly to the airlines man, so quietly and POLITELY I asked him what was going on ? how come the lines were not moving ? and he hit me with BOMBSHELL ” Well mam, you know it rained, and all the water went into the computer systems and since we have NO BACK UP, we lost all flight and passenger data”, and I was like “Excuse me?? WHAT are we going to do??” and with his silliest smile he said “wait and we will do it manually, dont WORRY mam”. OK, he says all passenger and flight data were lost and not to worry ?? hummm….. ok, lets not worry. An hour later, and two fights later – i fought with two me who had a tendency to just leave the whole god-damn airport and stand so close to me, that i could feel him – the airline parson calles for me and my flight SV 1072, how happy i felt, although something nagged at me when I got a hand written boarding pass, which the cleaning boy wrote, not the airline man, and similarly, a hand written bag-tag too. What could that mean, will I ever see my bag again, but what can i do, i said goodbye to my bag and said a little prayer for it to reach me safely on the other side.

I went in to the lounge area in the airport beyond the baggage area. I was looking for the first class loungee, and i found it. What was weird about it, that the man responsible for it, was standing outside the door, usually he has a nice desk and chair inside, so i said Hi, and gave him my boarding pass, and asked him if the flight is delayed, since it’s already passed the boarding time? well he gave me a smile so sweet and sad, and sad ” well i think all flights are delayed, since the SYSTEM IS DOWN since yesterday due to the RAIN, and they still did not get it up again, sorry” and that sweet/sad smile again, OK no problem as long as it’s for flights not one, so its a general problem. And i went in….. and the loung was beyond full, people were sitting on the floor, THE FIRST CLASS LOUNGE, hay, what was going on, i asked MR. sweet/sad smile, and again with his pathetic smile now, he answered, “well mam, no flights took off since noon?? you know the RAIN, you can sit in the luggage area at the entrance of the lounge, between the bags “, WHAT ???? and i thought i was first class, what could have happened to me if it was economy ?? God only knows. Well i sat next to another girl, whos’ head and fingers were permanently attached to her BB – Blackberry- so i sat next to her, lodged between the bags, 30 minutes later, she disconnected her head from her BB, and said Hi, which flight are you on?? i told her “SV 1072, which is at 8.45 pm to Riyadh, how about you?”, another sweet/sad smile ” well my flight is SV 1044, to Riyadh too, which was scheduled to take off at 2.15 pm, but it was delayed because of the RAIN, until god knows when” and her head and fingers got reconnected to her BB once again. The culprit once again, the one and only “the RAIN”.

At around 9.30 pm i decided to go out to where the gates are and see what was going around, and oh my god, everything was crazy, people were like everywhere, literary everywhere, i could not walk without stepping on someone. So i went back to the first class lounge, and i saw the lounge person and asked him what was going on and until when will our flight be delayed? , and another of these smiles – they were getting on my nerve now – and he answered ” now we are boarding go to gates from 1 to 4 and find your flight”, ok, that sounds weird, so i went to the gates and another shock, people were like over each other, it was beyond the word crowded, this does not look right. I saw the Mr.Pathetic smile, and i asked him what was going one, and oh my god, the shock i got from his answer ” well mam, because of the RAIN, and the systems crashing, and no back up, Riyadh’s six flights – yah six flights per day – were all cancelled, and we got two big 747 planes, which each carries 400 passengers, and its first come first serve basis, we have around 800 passengers stranded and we will try to fill the planes and if some more passengers are left we will try to arrange for another plane, so go fight your way through the 800 and so passengers and reach the plane or you will be stranded possibly until tomorrow morning, have and nice flight and i hope you chose saudia again” and another pathetic smile. WHAT ??? SAY AGAIN ?? EXCUSE ME ?? I stood there staring at 800 un-organized, exhausted, angry, people trying to pass through four, yah four gates in as short time as possible. I was like ” which planet am i on ??, where did i step in to ?? did someone switch the light off for a second and turn it on in a different place ?? where should i go ?? or more realistically, where do i start ?? and yah one more thing “Damn this stupid RAIN”.

We drive by many businesses here in Jeddah and I was always attracted by the blue color of this sign and the blue and white checkerboard pattern of the building, It took me several drive-bys to even read what the sign said. One can always get a chuckle from some of the translations and spelling of words from Arabic to English. This fisherie’s sign advertises the name of business, “Abo Waile,” and then goes on to explain “For Fish – For Saudi See Food.” Fisheries are common all over Jeddah. You can bring in your own freshly caught or purchased fish, or even make a selection from the fisheries’ own fresh offerings. The fisherie will clean and gut the fish for you and cook it to your liking. The most popular request is for deep frying fish. You can drop off your order and then pick it up to take home in less than an hour. Now that’s what I call Saudi See Food!

At least 44 people were killed in Jeddah after a heavy downpour. The rains caused a major infrastructure failure and the results were disastrous. My heart goes out to all Jeddawis.

This would not have happened if the people of Jeddah had a say in how their city is run. This would not have happened if there was transparency and accountability in how our country is governed.

I’m beyond angry and disgusted.

UPDATE 27/11/09 2:40: The death toll reaches 83. Keep in mind this is the official number announced by the Civil Defense. The actual number might be higher. More rains are expected on Jeddah tomorrow.

Sejumlah mobil terjebak banjir di kawasan Bahrah, perbatasan Jeddah-Makkah, Rabu (25/11). Hujan yang turun di kawasan Jedah, Mekkah serta Mina dan Arafah sempat mengganggu perjalanan calon haji ke Arafah

PADANG ARAFAH–Rombongan pejabat tinggi negara termasuk Menteri Agama, Suryadharma Ali, Tim Komisi VIII DPR, DPD dan KPK menunda jadwal keberangkatan dari Mekah ke Padang Arafah, dari Rabu malam menjadi Kamis (26/11) pagi. Pasalnya, sebagian kemah yang akan dihuni tamu VVIP rusak atau basah karena hujan lebat Rabu (25/11) siang kemarin.

Jemaah calon haji Indonesia yang sedang berada di Mekah, sebagian akhirnya juga meninggalkan Kota Suci itu menuju Arafah pada Rabu malam hari dan sebagian lagi mengikuti imbauan Panitia Penyelenggara Haji Indonesia (PPHI) untuk menunda keberangkatannya ke Padang Arafah Kamis pagi ini.

Saat berita ini ditulis, seluruh jemaah haji Indonesia yang akan berwukuf sudah berada di Padang Arafah.

Tercatat sekitar 209.000 calhaj Indonesia pada musim haji 1430 H, 192.000 calhaj reguler (Biaya Perjalanan Ibadah haji-BPIH atau dulu ONH) dan sekitar 17.000 calhaj nonreguler (NonBPIH atau ONH Plus).

Terdapat juga seribuan calhaj nonkuota atau yang diberangkatkan biro-biro jasa swasta tanpa koordinasi dengan Departemen Agama, dengan memanfaatkan “caling visa” atau undangan dari pemerintah Arab Saudi melalui lobi-lobi dengan pejabat Kementerian urusan haji atau Kedubes Arab Saudi.

Saat ritual Wukuf, Menag ditempatkan di tenda utama antara lain bersama Tim Pemantau Komisi VIII DPR, Pelaksana Tugas Dubes RI di Arab saudi dan Oman, Sukanto, Konjen RI di Jeddah Gatot Abdullah Mansyur, Dirjen Penyelenggaraan Haji dan Umrah Slamet Riyanto dan Kepala Staf Tehnis Urusan Haji Syairozi Dimyati.

Sebelum ritual Wukuf dimulai pada Kamis lepas tengah hari, Menag akan mendengarkan laporan dari Panitia Penyelenggara Ibadah Haji Indonesia (PPIH), kemudian mendengarkan khutbah Wukuf yang akan diberikan oleh Imam Mesjid Besar Istiqlal dan Dosen Insitut Ilmu Alquran Jakarta Prof. Dr. K.H. Ali Mustafa Yakub.

Wukuf adalah ritual puncak haji yang merupakan salah satu rukun haji, harus dikerjakan, jika tidak ibadah hajinya tidak sah.

Ritual Wukuf menamsilkan saat umat berada dalam formasi di Hari Penantian (Padang Mahsar) untuk menanti dihisab oleh Allah atau timbang pahala dan dosa yang telah diperbuatnya.

Jemaah akan bergeser dari Padang Arafah ke Muzdalifah (sekitar 7 Km) untuk melakukan mabit (memungut batu atau kerikil untuk melontar jumrah) dan tinggal di sana sampai larut malam.

Selama mabit, jemaah berdoa atau menggelar tikar untuk beristirahat sejenak, baru setelah lewat malam, Jumat pagi menuju jamarat Aqabah (jembatan untuk melontar batu atau kerikil) di Mina.

Ada tiga jamarat yang akan digunakan untuk ritual melontar jumrah yakni Aqabah, Ula dan Wustha.

Bagi yang melakukan Nafar Awal, batu yang dilontarkan sebanyak 49 (tujuh di jumrah Aqabah pada hari pertama), dilanjutkan dengan melontar ketiga jamarat (Ula, Wustha dan Aqabah) selama dua hari berturut-turut (7×3x2).

Sementara yang melakukan Nafar Sani, akan melontar 70 batu, tujuh batu dilontarkan di jamarat Aqabah pada hari pertama, kemudian masing-masing dilontarkan pada ketiga jamarat selama tiga hari berturut-turut (7×3x3).

Melontar jumrah merupakan ritual wajib haji (jika tidak dikerjakan, dikenakan dam atau denda berupa hewan kurban atau diwakilkan) yang merefleksikan saat nabi Ibrahim digoda setan untuk tidak mematuhi perintah Allah menyembelih puteranya, Ismail.

Jemaah haji Indonesia dijadwalkan akan kembali ke tanah air secara bergelombang dalam 475 kloter mulai 5 Desember sampai 1 Januari ke berbagai bandara debarkasi di Indonesia.

Sisakan masalah

Selain merenggut korban 24 jiwa, hujan lebat yang turun di kawasan Jeddah, Mekkah, dan Padang Arafah Rabu siang kemarin, menyisakan sejumlah masalah dan kerepotan warga serta pemerintah daerah setempat.

Gubernur Jeddah Pangeran Mishaal bin Majid seperti yang dikutip Arabnews, Kamis, memerintahkan pembentukan pusat kontrol darurat untuk memonitor perkembangan terakhir dampak bencana alam itu.

Namun bencana akibat hujan lebat itu sejauh ini tidak terlalu berpengaruh pada penyelenggaraan ibadah haji, khususnya ritual utama Wukuf di Padang Arafah dan melontar jumrah di Mina seperti yang semula dikhawatirkan orang.

Curah hujan mencapai 70 mili meter yang melanda kota Jeddah sekitar dua jam lebih, hampir mendekati jumlah dua pertiga tingkat curah hujan di negara itu sepanjang tahun.

Puluhan mobil terendam di ruas jalan raya Jeddah- Mekkah – Padang Arafah antara lain di distrik Sulaimaniah, sekitar 11 Km di luar kota Jeddah karena ruas jalan yang menuju Jeddah itu berubah jadi sungai dengan aliran deras.

Ribuan kendaraan, sebagian besar mengangkut calon jemaah haji menuju Padang Arafah terperangkap kemacetan lalu lintas sehingga sebagian balik ke Jeddah dan sebagian lagi mencari jalan memutar hingga memerlukan sekitar tujuh sampai delapan jam dari Jeddah ke Mekah atau Padang Arafah yang hanya berjarak sekitar 70 Km.

Beberapa distrik di kota Jeddah juga mengalami pemadaman listrik, baru malam hari sebagian mulai menyala lagi.

Hujan lebat yang jarang-jarang terjadi itu juga mengundang berbagai reaksi dan ulah warga Jeddah, terutama kelompok anak baru gede (ABG) yang bersukaria menyambut peristiwa langka itu. ant/itz

Banjir menggenangi semua jalanan kota Mekkah.”Kami terjebak karena air dan hujan. Insya Allah, semuanya akan baik-baik saja. ” kata Hakan, seorang jamaah Turki dari Istanbul ketika ia menunggu bus ke Mekah.

Ini adalah curah hujan yang paling berat selama bertahun-tahun, yang tidak pernah terjadi di kerajaan Saudi, banjir memampat banyak jalan dan bangunan di Jeddah. Saat ini sekitar 1,6 juta jamaah haji datang dari berbagai pelosok dunia.

It appears that King Abdullah is now making his moves towards significant reforms in Saudi Arabia.  KAUST is up and running as the first international and co-educational university in the Kingdom.  And recently Saudi Arabia announced its top 10 projects which are further indicative of major changes which will likely to lead towards additional reform.  Last but not least, there is also a proposal circulating to allow female lawyers to represent female clients within the Saudi courts.

The Top 10 Saudi projects according to Construction Week from 10 to number one are as follows:

10- Jeddah Gate Development

Jeddah gate is a US $1.6 billion project under construction and expected to be completed in ten years.  The projects is comprised of constructing both new residential and commercial space in the vicinities of King Abdullah Street and Abdullah Al Suleiman Streets in Jeddah.

9- Haramain High Speed Rail Project

Haramain High Speed Rail is a US $1.9 billion project and expected to be completed in 2013.  This project is for the construction of a much needed rail link connecting the two Holy Cities of Makkah and Medina via Jeddah.

8- Jizan Economic City (JEC)

The Jizan Economic City is a US $3 billion project anticipated to be completed by 2020.  This is a massive project which will be comprised of residential, commercial and industrial zones.

7- North-South Railway

The North-South Railway project is a US $3.5 billion project already under construction and expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2010.  In addition to transporting passengers in Saudi Arabia it will also be used for the transportation of minerals mined at Az-Zubairah and Al Jalamid to the processing facilities located at Ras Azur Port.  Some Saudi residents along the new railway will have to become accustomed to hearing the whistles of passing trains.

6-  Knowledge Economic City (KEC)

The Knowledge Economic City project is a US $8 billion project which is expected to be built in phases over a ten year period.  The project is to build a Knowledge Economic City in Medina which will help establish a catalyst for knowledge based industries in Medina.  Knowledge Economic City Developers claim that KEC will generate 20,000 new job opportunities.

5-  Prince Abdulaziz bin Mousaed Economic City

The Prince Abdulaziz Mousaed Economic City project is a US $8 billion project which is start in 2010 and completed in phases by 2022.  The project is to build a city within Hail with 12 distinct components for trade and services in sectors such as agriculture and food processing, mining, education, housing and entertainment.

4-  Landbridge Project

The Landbridge Project is a US $10 billion project.  A BOT consortium consisting of Trabot, Saudi Oger, Bin Laden Group and Al-Mada will construct a 950km railway network.  The railway will connect Jeddah to Damman and King Fahd Industrial port with Jubail Industrial City.

3-   Princess Noura bint AbdulRahman University for Women in Riyadh

The Princess Noura bint AbdulRahman University for Women in Riyadh is a US $11.5 billion project and anticipated completion is the first quarter of 2012.  This project is construction of a new university for women north of Riyadh.  The university will include administration buildings, 13 faculties, 700-bed student hospital, laboratories, research centers and residential housing for both students and staff.  This university will accommodate 26,000 students.

2-  Sudair City Development

The Sudair City Development is a US $40 billion project which will be a mixed use development including residential, commercial, entertainment and educational facilities.  Sudair City will be located north of Riyadh.

1-King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC)

The King Abdullah Economic City is a US $50 billion project located in Rabigh.  This massive project is construction of a city which will be divided into Industrial and Residential Zones as well as a Sea Resort and Sea Port.

In addition to the top ten projects this posting would not be complete without citing another significant project under the jurisdiction of the Arriyadh Development Authority (ADA).  This project is the construction and implementation of light rail metro system within the city of Riyadh.  The metro will have two lines consisting of 23 and 13 stations respectively.  A metro system in Riyadh will be a real plus where the city streets are already over-congested.  Although there is some controversy on how well a metro system will be received in Riyadh due to perception of those who will use the metro.  There are factions of Saudis who believe using public transport such as a metro system is degrading and that the metro is oriented more for expats and foreign laborers who are already accustomed to mass transit systems like metros.  The announcement of a metro in Riyadh also does not address whether certain cars will be designated as women or women/families only.  Nor does the announcement state if the metro would close during prayer times.

However in my personal opinion all of these large and costly developments are signs of both reform and progress in Saudi Arabia and initiated by King Abdullah.  I see these plans as steps which will also lead the way to the time when women will be able to drive in Saudi Arabia.

Indonesian airline Batavia Air will commence flights to Singapore from Jakarta and Semarang from Wednesday, 25 November 2009. The airline will operate daily on both routes using an Airbus A319 configured with 144 Economy Class seats on a Jakarta-Singapore-Semarang-Singapore-Jakarta routing.

Jakarta-Singapore

Flight 7P 861 departs Jakarta at 0700 hrs, arriving in Singapore at 0935 hrs. The return flight, 7P 862, takes off from Changi International Airport at 1650 hrs and lands back at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport at 1720 hrs.

Together with other international carriers, 12 airlines now fly between Singapore and Jakarta with over 450 scheduled flights each week.

From Semarang, flight 7P 863 departs at 1240 hrs, arriving in Singapore at 1540 hrs. The inbound flight, 7P 864, takes off at 1035 hrs from Changi International Airport, landing in Achmad Yani International Airport at 1140 hrs.

Batavia Air is the only operator to fly between Singapore and Semarang.

The latest Indonesian airline to operate passenger services in Singapore,  joining Garuda Indonesia, Indonesia AirAsia, Lion Air and Sriwijaya Air, Batavia Air operates a fleet of 38 aircraft on routes within Indonesia and selected international services to Guangzhou and Kuching. The airline plans to introduce flights to the Saudi city of Jeddah with Airbus A330-200 aircraft.
