Bantam was the first “jeep” used by the Army. These are great t-shirts to show support for the little company that could–build the FIRST 1/4-ton vehicle that would become known as the “jeep”. These vehicles were built by Willys and Ford in large quantities during WW2 but it was Bantam that was FIRST.

Still looking for a last minute gift? Here are some suggestions any 4-wheeler would love to receive.

Handle-All Multi-Function Tool $142.95 (4-in-1 Shovel, Sledge Hammer, Axe, Pick-Axe) $142.95
The Hi-Lift Jack Handle-All is four tools in one. The Handle-All can be configured into a shovel, sledge hammer, or pickaxe, or axe. The Handle-All differs from other multifunction tools in two primary ways: (1) the Handle-All features full-sized, interchangeable heads for full function; and (2) the Handle-All disassembles into a very compact space for easy storage and transport. The shovel is actually a real shovel with bowl and rake instead of some ridiculous attempt at a shovel attached perpendicularly to an axe head. The sledge hammer is a real 6 lb. sledge hammer. The pickaxe is actually a real pickaxe with a pointed end for punching through rocky soil and a chiseled end for chopping through rooted soil. The axe is actually a real axe with bit, concave cheeks, and poll. When full-sized implements are not required, only one of the two handle pieces may be fitted to reduce the size of the tools. The Handle-All is the only tool of its kind that combines real function with compactness. All of the pieces store inside the provided storage/transport bag. One need not transport his Handle-All on external roof rack or winch bar brackets

Polyurethane Handle Keeper For Hi Lift Jacks $14.95
The Handle Keeper is a “must have” for any Hi-Lift jack owner. Made of Polyurethane, it slips over the jack’s “I” beam and jack handle to keep them parallel and secured together. In addition to securing the handle while in transport, it also acts as a “buffer” between the jack handle and the jack “I” beam eliminating clanging. Designed specifically to fit over the top of ALL Hi-Lift jack models without having to remove the Top-Clamp Clevis. This is very important so the Handle Keeper can be removed quickly and easily while using the Hi-Lift, so that it won’t interrupt the proper and safe use of the Hi-Lift (allowing the jack handle to be placed in the full upright position during use).

Hi-Lift Jack Lift Mate $32.95
Many trucks and SUV’s have larger tires and/or lift kits that require extensive lifting height ability from the bumper jack. The Lift-Mate is designed to operate in a manner that allows the vehicle wheel to be lifted directly from the wheel, greatly reducing the amount of travel up the jack bar needed to lift the wheel in an adequate and safe height

Do you have an interest in the USMC or a USMC jeep? Then you need a copy of the rare USMC WW2 Preventive Maintenance Manual. This would make a great gift for the guy or gal that owns a USMC jeep!
USMC WW2 Preventive Maintenance Manual (1943) reprinted (hey STILL not a CD for a change!)

Approximately 49 pages (8.5×11) of wonderful hand inked drawings and typewritten pages. Includes the rare USMC Lube Charts for the MB/GPW and the 2 1/2-ton trucks

You will learn the Marince Corp way of maintenance….

What should the fluid levels be in the transmission?

and how about the differentials as well? (Notice the text, evidence of having been typewritten and reproduced exactly as the original.)

Want to know how to double clutch? Well, the Marines show you how! The Marines cover the following topics:

Transfer Case
Transmission
Differential
Universal Joints
Clutch
Gear Shifting
Engine
Ignition System
Battey & Lights
Fuel System
Cooling System
Brakes
Tires
Lubrication

This manual was original put together by the Motor Transport School, Marine Corp Supply Schools, Supply School Battalion, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

The manual is designed to be useful for most WW2 wheeled vehicles. It’s a great little manual. The drawings may not be as sophisticated as those published in WW2 Army Motors but they get the job done.

Price of the manual is still $22.00 plus shipping. So if you are a Marine Corp vehicle driver and missed the first reprinting this just might be the ticket for you! Or if you just want to learn some WW2 maintenance tips! You can purchase a copy via www.cafepress.com/42fordgpw
The vendor will take credit cards, money orders or checks!

It’s a great volume to add to your collection, USMC Preventive Maintenance. You will learn a lot of useful information even if you are NOT into Marine Corp wheeled vehicles.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!
I have to admit, I am getting excited for Christmas to come. The holidays are such a wonderful time – a time to spend with family and friends, and snow! Off roading in the snow is so much fun and brings on a whole new set of challenges. It’s a good thing to be ready for those challenges and even if you live in a climate where there is no snow, as all off roaders know, there are challenges around every turn to be had. Here are a few gifts that can help your off roader with challenges they can face along their off roading trail adventures.

Yesterday morning, my husband was on his way to the grocery store to pick up a few things for Thanksgiving dinner. He had “Homer”, my 3 year old great nephew with him. “Homer” tends to unfasten the seat belt around his car seat. So when hubby heard a snap, he leaned over to check the seat belt. Which in turn ’caused him to swerve out of his lane. When he looked up, he seen a school bus (no kids on the bus), and hit his brakes … he slid sideways and the jeep hit the bus on the drivers side front fender. There were even red marks on the top of that fender. The school bus was being driven by his brother’s wife!

Other than being sore, everyone is fine. Just some aches. Homer is fine, and acting fine. Below are pictures of what’s left of our jeep.

The 83 page book contains the instruction manual for installing the Winterization Kits that were issued during WW2. Frankly, when I started 20 years ago in this hobby I didn’t even know WW2 jeeps could have had a heater. There is information here about the slave kit…this allowed one jeep to be used as a starter vehicle for other vehicles that were too frozen to start on their own. For a preview you can go to www.42fordgpw.com/book.html and down load a 4 MB pdf file.

Jug..jug..jug..jug..jug..jug……

Jug..jug..jug..jug..jug..jug……

Tuloy lamang. Ano man ang mangyari.

Actually, it’s a final destination scenario kung iimagine-nin..

May kalbong nakatayo. May magsyotang naglalambingan.

(A technical problem has occurred..)

“Next station: Betty-Go Belmonte..Ang susunod na istasyon ay Betty-Go Belmonte..”

For the 2010 model year, Chrysler Group LLC products make up nearly 15 percent of the total vehicles

For the 2010 model year, Chrysler Group LLC products make up nearly 15 percent of the total vehicles named Top Safety Picks by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Specifically, the IIHS selected the 2010 Jeep Patriot, 2010 Chrysler Sebring, 2010 Dodge Avenger and 2010 Dodge Journey for the awards. This makes two years running for the Chrysler Sebring, Dodge Avenger and Dodge Journey as IIHS safety picks. The awards are another example of Chrysler Group LLC’s commitment to both safety and quality.

“Chrysler showed the most improvement of any automaker for 2010,” said IIHS President Adrian Lund. “These Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge models are part of an elite group that afford the best overall crash protection and have electronic stability control, which can help keep drivers out of crashes altogether.”

In addition to ESC with traction control, all four vehicles include Brake Assist and Antilock Braking System, driver and front-passenger active head restraints, front seat-mounted side airbags and advanced multi-stage front airbags.

All four vehicles also include the company’s new active head restraint system for front-seat occupants. This system allows head rests to move forward with the seat occupant’s head during a rear-end collision, thus reducing the space between the head rest and the person’s head.

I love those moments where Nathaniel does something that makes me smile and/or makes me proud. But at the same time, I often find myself fighting back tears because John wasn’t here to witness the moment and share it with me.

Today, I gave kiddo an assortment of cheerios, puffs, and crunchies and a sippy cup of milk while I fed the horses. It was raining and chilly, so, he sat in the Jeep while I fed. Then afterward we went inside and I gave him some more cheerios.

I put them in a bowl and put it on the floor so he could sit and munch. I notice that he’s moved the bowl of cheerios to the chair. This happens to be perfect standing table height for him.

Then he disappears for a moment and comes back with his toy fork. He proceeds to do his best to eat using his baby fork. He lucks out and spears a few cheerios that then make it to his mouth! My little boy is growing up!!!! I smiled and fought back tears… it was a moment that John would have enjoyed more than I did. I can just see how proud he’d be and how we’d look at each other and smile. It made me want to cry that he wasn’t here.

Maybe John has the best seat in the house and gets to see all of Nathaniel’s special moments. I don’t know.

But I do know… he’s not here to share them with me. So, I bite my lip, think of John and smile to Nathaniel and clap and congratulate him. I don’t know if they’ll ever not be those moments that intertwine happiness and sadness.

Miss you, John. Love you always. You’d be so proud of your son.

Of course, I’m not a Chevy expert but the truck looks pretty neat. The Jeep isn’t really a 1941 as it would likely have been an MA or at the very least a slat grille. Still it’s a neat item to add to your collection.

Things started off fairly well last Saturday. The sun had set and the evening was going great. I m

Things started off fairly well last Saturday. The sun had set and the evening was going great. I met with some friends and went down to Blue Frog Cantina in East Atlanta to dig Quad Control and co’s Atlanta Bass Wars night. The place was rammed, and I was really feelin’ the old skool jungle vibes blasting from the system. I even had to politely reject a lady at the bar by telling her that I was not single and def had someone at home. It was a good laugh, nonetheless, until we decided to try to get over to an after-hours elsewhere in the city.

That’s when the trouble started.

After finding that the group of people we were looking to meet up with where not there yet, the doorman insisted that we leave the parking lot, and as I tried to get my Jeep moving, albeit hastily and fairly frustrated at the fact that it would not idle but instead turn off completely if I did not give it any gas, I threw the bitch in gear and BAM!! My drive shaft fell right out from underneath the m**F****.

To make a long shory stort, we took a cab 20 miles out of the city, I slept on the floor, and woke up seriously hungover. I made arrangements to have my vehicle towed 2 miles from the corner of Juniper and North Ave in Midtown over to a service station at Ponce and Moreland. It would have to wait until Monday. So it is, and now I’m waiting on a rental car to come pick me up from home so that I can sort everything out and get back in the mode for Thanksgiving.

Digital Tire Gauge $12.99:
As every off roader knows, a tire gauge is essential in deflating your tires to the right pressure for the terrain, and then airing back up before hitting the roads home. If your off roader is tired of trying to read the lines that are in 2 pound increments on those pencil tire gauges then this easy to read and accurate digital tire gauges in half-pound increments is for them! Lower the tire pressure for those off-road trips and then accurately re-inflate them to the safe recommended tire pressure for on-road use. These gauges save fuel and extend tire life. Made of high impact plastic. http://www.xtremeterrain.com/digitaltiregauge.aspx

Now, there have been plenty of recalls lately, Jeep recalling their Wranglers, Mistubishi recalling

Now, there have been plenty of recalls lately, Jeep recalling their Wranglers, Mistubishi recalling some Lancers, and Toyota soon to recall several of their models. Now there’s another one, but this one is quite peculiar.

First of all, it’s not just any car, it’s the 1995-1996 Ferrari F355 and F355 F1. Secondly, this issue was supposed to be fixed back in 1997, when Ferrari did a recall for a fuel leak/fire problem, but the NHTSA says “Independent automobile repair facilities may have improperly installed certain screw clamps that are located in close proximity to the fuel lines and that fasten the water sleeve to the thermostat connection. The improper installation of these screw clamps may damage the fuel supply pipes.” This could result in fuel leaking into the engine compartment, and causing smoke, or in the worst case, fire.

The NHTSA says that 2,356 F355s are affected.

For the new fix, Ferrari install fuel divider blocks to prevent fuel leakage.

If you happen to own a F355 or F355 F1 (Though I doubt you do if you’re here reading this), then contact your local Ferrari dealership, or you can contact Ferrari directly at (201) 816-2600, and arrange to get the fix installed as soon as possible. Try not to use your car until the fix is installed.

For those F355 owners who aren’t reading this (Probably all of them), Ferrari will begin notifying owners in December.

Jeep has recalled about 161,450 2007-2008 Jeep Wranglers with an automatic transmission due to a pro

Jeep has recalled about 161,450 2007-2008 Jeep Wranglers with an automatic transmission due to a problem which may cause transmission overheating.

The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) says that Wranglers manufactured between June 2006 and July 2008 with automatic transmissions were not fitted with a transmission fluid temperature warning system. If the fluid overheats, it may boil and come in contact with hot engine and exhaust components, which could lead to a fire.

To help stop this from happening, all the affected Jeeps will have a “Hot Oil” visual message installed in the instrument cluster, as well as an audible chime to go with it. Dealerships will start performing this service free of charge starting in December.

If you own a 2007-2008 Jeep Wrangler with an automatic transmission, contact your dealership about it and arrange to get the fix installed as soon as it is available. Also refrain from doing anything which could cause the transmission to overheat until you have the fix installed.

If you are interested in the history of the development of the jeep there is little substitute for the first effort done by H. Rifkind. This book was written from the Quartermaster Corps’ perspective but draws on numerous resources and documentation to put together a pretty good picture of what happened. What makes it even more valuable is that it actually lists the sources. So if you can figure where and how to find them, you find a gold mine of information to research. I know that I have used this information to track down at least one of the players in the jeep story–Major General George Lynch, Chief of Infantry. The Infantry was instrumental in development of the jeep project–they saw the need long before anyone or any other agency jumped on the bandwagon.

The current version available produced in the UK is an acceptable version but if you can find the original manuscript complete with handwritten notes—so much the better….but until then.
