Rihanna Rated R Universal 7/10 Before we begin, let’s get this straight :This is not a record about

Rihanna
Rated R
Universal

7/10

Before we begin, let’s get this straight :This is not a record about Chris Brown. It is a record influenced by Chris Brown, but it’s not about him. In a recent interview with Radio 1, Rihanna explained that going into the studio “it kind of was my peace and it was my place to vent.” See that possessive adjective? As the title suggests, Rated R is a record about Rihanna.

The lead single- ‘Russian Roulette’- sets the agenda. Rated R is an LP about the balance of power, and control. With only one other female songwriter apart from Rihanna (Ester Dean- ‘Rude Boy’) it’s a startlingly masculine record- in sound, and in attitude. Sexuality is represented as aggressive, or reflective- always passionate. On ‘Firebomb’ Rihanna sings of burning her lover to death- just so he can feel as she does. Meanwhile, the Justin Timberlake-penned ‘Cold Case Love’ is a melancholic and mature farewell to a failed relationship. ‘Wait Your Turn’ is an electric backstreet stiletto stab, where- eyebrow cocked- Rihanna sings ‘I’m such a fucking lady/ You don’t have to be afraid’, and on ‘Rude Boy’ Rihanna explicitly explains how she likes her men in bed. Even the ballad ‘Te Amo’ (which harks back to ‘Music of the Sun’) is sung from a male perspective, placing Rihanna as the male who can’t commit to love, rather than as the woman who is clinging to an unrealistic ideal. Though Jay-Z wasn’t involved in the production of the record, his influence is tangible. On ‘Hard’, Rihanna echoes his internal rhymes in her intonation- ‘‘Brilliant, resilient, fan mail from twenty-seven million’- and her swagger on tracks such as ‘Rock Star’ (featuring Slash!) owes a lot to Hova.

Despite the abundance of male influence on the record- from ex-boyfriend, to songwriters, to producers, to mentors- Rihanna makes the sound her own, and fights back. On ‘G4L‘ she calls for an army of women, in solidarity- “Girls, girls come on we ain’t done yet/ Gotta lot to handle/ We ain’t take over the world yet/ Guns in the air”. Never exploited, and totally in control, the sultry sexbomb of ‘Good Girl Gone Bad’ is now a siren on the rocks- dangerous, self-aware and with a clan behind her. Empowered but not embittered, Rihanna turns her back on love. Ailbhe Malone

Now, I’m not 100 percent certain on this. But one day, way back when, a guy heard something so ridiculous while walking past a pile of bull dong that he decided to call what was uttered the foul heap he had stumbled upon. Unbeknownst to the insightful stroller, he had given the American vocabulary one of it’s most enduring classifications for sheer nonsense. Granted, I was told this by my uncle, a 40-year drunkard. Nevertheless, if he’s right, whatever pissed that guy’s ears off that historical day had to sound a lot like 50 Cent’s Before I Self Destruct.

The former nine-shot taker turned Vitamin Water huckster hit the studio one last time for Interscope to let his ego run ass-out crazy. The album starts out strong enough with Fif offering his enemies a chance to “come get some” on the opening track, The Invitation. It’s set to a piano-laced beat Mr Jackson handles fairly well. Problem is, the lyrics don’t bring anything new. We’re basically being reminded of Fifty’s collection of weapons ready to be used against those foolish enough to step to him “in the hood.” Now honestly, no one, at least I hope, believes the 400-million dollar man is still hanging out on his old block squeezing off on rivals, which makes the whole hustler-on-the-rise thing almost comical at this point.

Never known for a solid flow or clever word play, his strength always relied on the low raspy tone of his delivery. It always lent a seriousness to his buildups which we all bought in the past. Here, it’s tired and worn. For instance, it’s utilized in Death to My Enemies, a sprawling mess of pop references and cliches where the former Queens hustler’s message is lost until the hook reminds you and it’s like: oh, he’s pissed at a few people.

We all know the diss track is to New York what the runing of the bulls is to the people of Spain. Fifty adds to his native state’s legacy with So Disrespectful. Old beefs are resussitated with Jeezy, The Game and Young Buck, three people no one gives a damn about anymore. Worse, nothing is being said to make you want to revisit those issues. Well, I don’t know…how do you feel about this ? It’s crazy how I make this shit look oh so easy. They say, 50, man don’t fuck with him, he’s oh so greasy. I know. Stop it, Mr Jackson, please.

Not being able to let go of the past aside, The rest of the album slowly morphs into a hacky attempt to grab ladies through dry R&B powered tracks, even managing to recruit fading Chicago crooner R Kelly for one of the most forgettable collaborations since Bone Thugs in Harmony and Phil Collins. Right, exactly.

After the release of Curtis, critics and fans felt Fifty was becoming soft, human even. Naturally, moving into your 30s will bring new life experiences and Curtis cracked a window for us to take a personal look at an artist revolving from boy to adult. Frightened of losing his fanbase after the experiment, BISD was a road map to guide us back to the “dark side.”

Well, we’ve seen that side before and it was fun for a while, but maybe it’s time to get back to growing up, Fif.

The Game talks R.E.D. album, 50 Cent, Jay-z and Interscope

Complex: Starting off, talk about the reasoning behind naming your new joint The R.E.D. Album.

Game: R.E.D is simply rededicated. That’s what R.E.D is, the r-e-d in red for me. And rededicated to what? My family, my craft, which is hip-hop, my fans, which are world wide, my children, my hood, my city, and what got me here—which is the color. I think that before I came out there was no red. There was Snoop, everybody was Crip walking. I came in, I took the color on as a whole. People just adapted to who I am and where I come from. I mean now, even Crips wear red.

Complex: How do you feel about other rappers who claim Blood and shout “Soo-Woo”?

Game: I mean, look what I did to Jim Jones, and look at Weezy, and look at Gucci Mane. I feel like I did that. It’s a free country. People can do whatever they want to do and if anything they’re just making me bigger and my legacy and where I come from and what I represent bigger.

Complex: I know Gucci Mane is on the album. What other collaborations can we expect?

Game: I got Rick Ross. I got Beanie Sigel, I got Jeezy. I finally did a song with Jeezy that’s fuckin’ crazy too. For the most part it’s me, with a couple of features from people I haven’t worked with yet—I always try to work with new people every album. But it’s people that I respect and that are also poppin’ in the world and that other people want to hear.

O, addirittura, in maniera gangsta come in G4L dove Rihanna canta: “I lick the gun, When I’m done, Cause I know, That revenge is sweet…“.

Vissuto. Ne sono un esempio l’intensa Stupid In Love, dove canta “I still love you, But I just cant do this, I may be dumb but I’m not stupid“, la sorprendente Cold Case Love, che recita “What you did to me was a crime, Cold Case Love, And I let you reach me one more time…But that’s enough” e The Last Song, che chiude degnamente questo ottimo album.

Tracklist: Mad House – Wait Your Turn – Hard” (featuring Young Jeezy) – Stupid in Love – Rockstar 101 (featuring Slash) – Russian Roulette – Fire Bomb – Rude Boy – Photographs (featuring will.i.am) – G4L – Te Amo – Cold Case Love – The Last Song

Well you guys, it’s time for the second installment of my hard-hitting, critically praised Playlistology series . Y’all ready? Of course not, you could never be ready for such greatness. It’s time to go anyways though. 6 to 10, it goes like this

6. Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds by the Beatles—> Would you guys believe that I have never listened to the Beatles stoned before? I know, I know it’s unacceptable and I really am ashamed. It’s on my list of things to do in the near future. And I think this is probably gonna be the song that I start with, because the woozy organ and tambourine action and Paul McCartney telling me about tangerine trees, marmalade skies, and girls with kalaidescope eyes make me feel like I’m halfway to Mars already. Supposedly, the song is about an LSD trip, so I’m gonna take that as John Lennon imploring me to listen to this song on a blunt of Afghan Kush from beyond the grave. I can’t fuck with LSD though. I’m not that hard core.

7. Weezy’s Ambitons by Lil’ Wayne—->Wayne is so frustrating sometimes. But whenever I get upset with his ear bleeding attempts at “rock” or his corny syrup crazed non sequiturs on his last 5 mixtapes, I just go back and listen to this song from the mixtape classic Dedication 2, and I’m back to fucking loving Weezy’s psycho ass. How could I do otherwise when he has lines like “The women say damn, the men don’t say a damn thing, boy I bet that shotty make you bounce like a bed spring”, and tells me to keep my bitch ass lines inside the margins? All this over Tupac’s classically dope “Ambitionz az a Rydah” beat. Oh, Mr. Carter, how you make me swoon. I’ll never let my bitch ass lines escape the margins, all for you.

8. Brown Sugar by The Rolling Stones—-> It might be slightly sick and disgusting, but I kind of have a crush on Mick Jagger. Like, even now when he’s older than the fucking grand canyon and looks a lot like one of those crunchy leaves that you go out of your way to step on when walking across your yard. I think my infatuation may have something to do with his filthy richness, giant lips, hard partying former rockstar ways, and most importantly the endearingly racist lyrics to this song. “Brown sugar, how come you taste so good, brown sugar, just like a black girl should”. Of course black girls should taste great! They’re scrumptious snacks, not people. Just knowing that Mick Jagger believes that I am morally obligated to have a delicious black girl flavor about myself makes me want to let him have a little taste. That was disgusting, please accept my apology.

9. Where is my Mind by the Pixies—-> One of my favorite songs, for sure. The lulling acoustic guitar met with the clashing rock chords? The haunting, ethereal wailing in the background? Black Francis’ tortured boy voice asking me where my mind is? Yeah, I don’t even have anything sarcastic or hilarious to say about this song. It’s just hella great. Sorry for saying hella.

10. What They Want by Young Jeezy—> When I tell you my love for Young Jeezy has no limits, I’m mostly lying because there is some stuff that he’s done that I deem unforgivable, like collaborate with Ciara. But whenever I want to hear witty, gritty wordplay about the making and distribution of cocaine, Young Jeezy is my go-to guy. A big reason why I love “What They Want”, from his magnum opus album The Recession so much is just so I can proudly sing along to the hook. “If Young is what they want, then Young is what they gettin! Ask me what I do, I tell ‘em teach it for a livin!” That’s what I yell out while bouncing around my living room and making various hand gestures whenever this song comes on, except I replace “Young” with my name. I try to do The Young One’s signature rasp too, but I already know I sound spectacularly retarded on that front. But yeah….the trademark Jeezy beat soaring strings and horns are all there. Also, each verse is a different extended sports metaphor for the drug trade! Deep shit you guys.

Well it looks like I’m done with my first Playlistism. I would like to thank the Haters, and also in the future my playlistisms will only consist of five each, because doing 10 at once is a lot of time and effort and the Kid is way too lazy for that shit. Tomorrow I’m gonna talk about tatoos. It’s gonna be a hell of a party. Run along now

Any opportunity to feature Rhianna here on the pages of this blog, we will take it.

If there is no reason, then we will create it.In this case on Monday November 16, 2009, Rihanna performed at the Brixton Academy with star-studded guests including guest rappers Jay-Z and the Young Jeezy along for the ride.

Rhianna’s rider included a very comfy multi-coloured arm-chair. At 11pm, on the way out the driver hadn’t closed the trunk of the van and Rhianna’s luggage spilled out all over the road.

After the luggage was locked away, Rihanna and her entourage headed for some sushi at Nozomi.

They then headed to the Royal fave Mahiki nightclub to party until 3am, where she was joined by Jay-Z and Beyoncé.

Here is the album review I promised on my twitter yesterday! Before I start, once again I want to thank you all for supporting my blog, both my music reviews and my personal entries. I really appreciate all the views and I hope that you’ll keep it locked here because I ain’t stoppin’! Thankyou.

You already know what I think of Russian Roulette, and the other 3 songs we’ve heard already from Rated R. Generally, they portray a darker, edgier side to Rihanna, both in the production (deeper, more menacing beats) and lyrical content that includes a bit of cursing, a lot of swagger and references to pain, trials and tribulations. ”Russian Roulette”, “Wait Your Turn” and “Hard” are more or less indicative of the album as a whole. In contrast to her previous smash Good Girl Gone Bad, it’s a lot less uptempo. The songs are mainly midtempos and ballads, which may alienate a lot of fans who want her faster, danceable material (though “Hard” and “Rude Boy” cater to these needs, and do so well with swagger lyrics – the latter seeing Rihanna come on to a ‘rude boy’ as if she were the guy who is gonna “put it on you”). However, the slower material allows for two major things: one, to prove that Rihanna can actually sing. Okay, she’s no Beyoncé, but she holds her own a lot better than many people might expect. ”Russian Roulette” and closing standout “The Last Song” don’t employ lots of vocal runs, but they emphasise strong, clear vocals that prove Rihanna’s got a voice as well as a body – btw. the artwork for this era is immense! – and also go well with the more emotionally searching and vulnerable material. Two, it allows for Rihanna to delve into her pain, and although it’s never made explicit that she’s referencing her love, abuse and love lost with Chris Brown, songs such as “Stupid In Love” and the epic “Cold Case Love” immediately bring that whole affair to mind.

Not every song is concerned with love lost. ”Te Amo” is about a girl who’s infatuated with Rihanna, and its undulating beats have been beefed up slightly on the album version to make it more hypnotic and possibly (along with “Rude Boy”) the song that would have slotted in nicely on Good Girl Gone Bad. ”Rockstar 101″ is backed up by Slash’s guitar work and like “Hard” and “Wait Your Turn”, it demonstrates Rihanna’s confidence in herself – something she perhaps wants to emphasise. She is fierce! However, compared to some of the other tracks, “Rockstar 101″ falls somewhat flat, as it doesn’t have as much depth as the emotionally-charged midtempos, nor does it ring as true as the harder-knocking songs. It does demonstrate that Rihanna is not an urban artist – she’s a pop singer who encompasses a range of music. On this album, she combines elements of rock, pop, R&B and melds them together to create a dark album that works for the most part. And credit goes to her for trying to improve on each album – like Good Girl Gone Bad, the amount of filler on the disc is fairly minimal (in contrast to her first two records) and she’s tried to do something different that has evolved as she has as a person. So I must applaud that.

A couple of the ballads such as “Stupid In Love” and “Photographs” (which benefits from will.i.am’s synthed beats that kick in midway) are perfectly solid, but pale in comparison to the best tracks. These are, in a nutshell, first single “Russian Roulette”, “Fire Bomb”, “G4L”, “Cold Case Love” and “The Last Song”. These all work because Rihanna is putting herself out there vocally and emotionally. The producers do a fantastic job (praise must go in particular to Justin Timberlake and The Ys’ work on “Cold Case Love”, which shows a gradual building of beatboxing, standard beats, guitars and strings to an epic climax that fades out by itself and underline Rihanna’s pain at a love misfired – “Release me now ’cause I did my time”) more or less throughout, but Rihanna herself carries the songs. ”Fire Bomb” has been compared to something by Kelly Clarkson, but in my opinion it knocks much harder and is a compelling contrast to expectations – most people would expect a club banger from the title, when in fact it’s a slow pop/rock ballad which essentially says “if I’m going down in flames, you’re coming with me”. ”G4L” is one of the darkest songs which shows Rihanna pledging to be “down 4 life”, ride or die until the end. The off-key tweaks at the beginning signal something mysterious, and the lyric “I lick the gun when I’m done ’cause I know that revenge is sweet” is one of the best opening salvos I can remember. The track brings to mind the tiny gun tattoos on the sides of Rihanna’s breasts, demonstrating that even if she may be a sweet person on the surface, she’s also a strong and determined one – her attitude is reflected in her music as much as her body art.

“The Last Song” was the track that stood out to me most from listening to the 30-second snippets, and it doesn’t disappoint – it’s a perfect closer to the album, not only in name but in texture also. It employs a soaring guitar and heartwrenching lyrics, chronicling the realisation of a breakup. ”The sad song ends up being the last song you’ll ever hear.” Rihanna’s spare vocals almost seem to cry the lyrics throughout the track, and the buildup throughout the song until near the end where all the instruments fade out is done perfectly. Rihanna said that she wanted Lil’ Wayne and Kings Of Leon to like her album, demonstrating her desired blend of urban and rock. The album is definitely a mélange of styles, but apart from “Hard”, I don’t see enough hip-hop for Weezy to connect with, and the rock elements are nowhere near as indie-pop as Kings Of Leon. However, the soaring guitars provide something edgier and deeper within the context of a pop album, and the hard-hitting beats and synths knock plenty – the combination of which provide something quite extraordinary and special within itself. Rihanna should be proud of this record.

Rated R has a focused aggression to it that rings truer than it did on Good Girl Gone Bad. Despite the lack of uptempo smashes, it’s a fantastic record that hopefully will have as much repeat-play value as her previous record. Whether it’s because of her personal struggles, maturity as a young woman or desire to experiment musically (probably a combination of all three), Rated R shows growth. I pray that her label doesn’t re-release the album, since it’s perfect as it is and comes across as something sincere, rather than designed to make money as a light pop confection. Why I’m impressed with Rated R, beyond the simple fact that most of the songs are solid or better, is because it’s cohesive. All the songs work together to make the album more than the sum of its parts. It has a big emotional impact, and it sets a musical mood (dark, edgy and yet heartfelt) that doesn’t let up throughout – in her own words, from “Hard”, “that Rihanna rain/reign”. I didn’t know if she had it in her to best Good Girl Gone Bad, but even if it doesn’t have as many number 1 smashes and addictive beats, Rated R is a musical step forward that I personally value that little bit more.

The wait is indeed ‘ova’…

I listened to Rihanna’s new album “Rated R” in its entirety yesterday…and was pleasantly surprised. I had my doubts about this whole ‘era’, but am glad to say that she delivers.

MAD HOUSE sets the tone of the album. Sinister, dark, sexy, hard.

WAIT YOUR TURN has got swagger for days. I love how she rides the beat and I personally think this is one of the stronger tunes of the album.

HARD is the song everyone has been like “damn, this should’ve been her first single”…but although I like its energy and hip-hop vibe, I’m pretty happy “Russian Roulette” was the first joint dropped from this album. Jeezy adds to the track and as a whole this continues on the strength of the first two tracks. “WHERE YOUR LIGHTERS AT?”

STUPID LOVE brings down the tone of the album. It’s probably my least favourite tune, but it’s good to provide variation and this is exactly what the song does. The lyrics are also quite deep.

ROCKSTAR 101

RUSSIAN ROULETTE lead single. A lot of people have mixed feelings on this song especially with regards to the message its apparently promoting. All I will say is, ever heard of a metaphor? Strong song.

FIRE BOMB Mid-tempo ballad. Sort-of skipped. I won’t even lie.

RUDE BOY

PHOTOGRAPHS Maybe my favourite track on the album. What can I say? Will.I.Am sure can make beats. Just hear this one out. Starts slow, but progresses and develops as it goes on. I like the layering of Will.I.Am’s vocals – they really compliment Rihanna’s voice. The simple beat also fuses well with the hook “you…”. Favourite part of the track is probably when Will.I.Am takes over on the bridge.

G4L This is a banger. I can imagine it blazing outta MAHOUSSIVE speakers. Bass shaking you up in the clurrrb.

TE AMO This track provides a very different feel on the album. It’s light synthy sound and tropical drums create a product, which is somewhat incongruous when standing against the rest of the album.

COLD CASE LOVE Written by JT, this track gets really good around the 4 minute mark. Sounding like a Timbo-joint, its actually produced by The Y’s (JT’s production team). A jam on the album.

THE LAST SONG

Definite standout tracks = Mad House, Wait Your Turn, Hard, Russian Roulette, Photographs and Cold Case Love.
