As they’re playing, Stan’s father walks in, asks, “You kids want to see something really cool?” and starts to play an electric guitar.
For a moment, the room is dead silent. Then, Stan asks, incredulously, “Dad, what are you doing?”
“I can actually play a lot of these songs on a real guitar,” the father responds. “Want me to show you boys how?”
Stan spits back, “That’s stupid, Dad.”
Well, maybe not, say guitar teachers. In fact, the immense popularity of the hit Guitar Hero franchise–the third iteration of the game, Guitar Hero III, brought in $115 million during its first week on the market–may be the best thing that has happened to the instrument, to rock ‘n’ roll, and to guitar instructors, in a long time.
“I have an overwhelming feeling that my business is safe for years to come when I see kids playing Guitar Hero,” said Dan Emery, owner of New York City Guitar School. “These kids are really enjoying playing Guitar Hero, and they’re really being turned on to old classic rock” via the game.
Emery said he actually sees Guitar Hero as perhaps the best recruitment tool his school could have asked for.

Credit: South Park Studios
In the South Park episode “Queer-o,”
Stan and Kyle entertain their friends
by playing Guitar Hero.
“I fully expect that (kids who play the game) will get into their twenties and they will have disposable income and they will decide to actually play guitar and they’re going to call us up,” he said.
Exact numbers of Guitar Hero-fueled converts to the real thing (kids or adults) are hard to come by. But something at work here clearly could be the most powerful advertisement for the guitar since the hit Richard Linklater movie School of Rock.
In that film, Jack Black plays a teacher who, through sheer passion for music, turns a class of rock-illiterate elementary school students into a head-bobbing rock band. After the movie came out, San Francisco guitar teacher Jay Skyler said his roster of young students exploded overnight.
“All of a sudden, I had 9-year-old students,” Skyler said, “because all of a sudden, everyone wanted a guitar.”
But now, with Guitar Hero turning into one of the most successful video game franchises of all time, Skyler said it’s not just kids who seem interested in playing the real instrument.
While some of his new adult students may not be willing to admit that the game drove them to him, he did suggest a definite cause and effect.
“My adult students, they don’t want to cop to it,” Skyler said of being Guitar Hero fans, “but they’re all, ‘Have you played the game?’”
The immense popularity of Guitar Hero does worry some of Skyler’s fellow guitar teachers, who fret that the game may deter kids from being interested in picking up the real instrument. But Skyler doesn’t share that concern, instead feeling that the long-term outcome will be positive.
“Basically, it’s getting more kids into guitar,” Skyler said. “So if you’re a guitar teacher, or a band, you have to love it. They’ll play with the toy for a while, but after awhile, they’ll want the real thing.”

“No! Try not. Do, or do not. There is no try.”
- Yoda
How often have we all said “I’ll try” when asked to do something? But the fact is, either you will do it… or you won’t. There really is no “trying” as Yoda has pointed out. Either you will pick up that spoon… or you won’t. Either you will make that phone call… or you won’t. Either you will learn that guitar solo… or you won’t. There is no “in between” which “trying” implies.

Joss Stone has grown up, to the extent that she’s reportedly willing to forfeit on £2million to leave record label, EMI, who appear to be annoyed that Stone, now 22, isn’t doing as she’s told as she did when she broke through as a 16-year-old wonder kid on The Soul Sessions. EMI even called the artwork for Colour Me Free! “offensive” and changed it in the US. The two years-plus leading up to this album have hardly been smooth. Stone’s third, R&B-style album, Introducing Joss Stone, got mixed responses and there was the backlash following Stone’s peculiar speech at the 2007 Brit Awards.

It’s difficult to say Stone’s cultural currency has fallen when she can call upon Jeff Beck, Nas and retro soul maestro Raphael Saadiq, even if the performances of the former two aren’t the finest. Beck draws out a flimsy funk like and generic classic rock solo on ‘Parallel Lines’, while Nas’ verses on ‘Governmentalist’ sound phoned in (although, he’s one of the few rappers to rhyme “dude” with “genetically modified food”).

‘Governmentalist’, a deep funk number with nods to Stone’s namesake Sly, is a stick out track rather than standout one, with explicit anti-war lyrics rather than Stone’s typical words about boyfriends being great/rubbish and peace-and-love hippyology. Trouble is, the message is lost among vocal acrobatics and the “thou shall not kill” line clangs.

It’s on the summery funk of ‘Free Me’ and ‘Incredible’ when she’s not being an X Factor-style, note-perfect diva that Stone has the most attitude and clarity in her voice. While on ‘4 And 20′, her huskiness complements the dreamy, lounge bar swing perfectly. Unfortunately, there are too many dull moments: an unadventurous cover of Ray Charles’ ‘I Believe It To My Soul’ (the nu-gospel reworking of ‘You Got The Love’ is great though); a break-up song devoid of any angst on ‘Could Have Been You’; and a 14-minute jam called ‘Mr Wankerman’, which makes Eamon’s ‘Fuck It (I Don’t Want You Back)’ appear a subtle put-down.

Stone’s voice, though, is always her own. She never tries to ape Dusty or Amy, as those who have followed her and Winehouse’s success have done. It’s just a shame the feistiness she’s shown in standing up to EMI and after the accent debacle at the Brits doesn’t appear on record. Originally posted at Daily Music Guide

Little Walter
Howlin’ Wolf
Miguel Botafogo (Don Vilanova)
Mississippi Blues Band
Texas Blues
Lester Williams

The photos were taken by my father in the ’70s and ’80s, and may have been done so less out of artistic desire and more as a reminder to what actually happened. (Obligatory “If you remember the ’70s, you weren’t really there” joke.) Some of the bands and musicians include Little Feat, KISS, Rory Gallagher, Jeff Beck, Jackson Browne, Renaissance, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Warren Zevon, Robert Palmer… the list goes on.

This one made me have to stop and think for a bit. You know how hard I tried to get some funk up in here, but then I said naw, lemme be good and do the thing right.

Besides, what could ever be more inspirational than Stevie Wonder’s Higher Ground?

And (just as a quick diversion) you gotta love what the Red Hot Chili Peppers had to say about this…

But now getting back to the meat of the theme of inspiration, this song by Sly and the Family Stone is, to me, one of the greatest inspirational soul tunes of all time…

And then, I mean, you can’t even begin to talk about inspirational music without talkin’ ’bout Curtis Mayfield!

But before we go, check out what my man Jeff Beck had to say about Curtis’ tune…

On stage, he looks and performs like a man at least two decades younger. But where does Guy rank with the other guitar stars making the rounds these days?

Backstage Blog from Laura Ingle

For a fan of Rock N Roll … it just doesn’t get bigger than this!!

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25th Anniversary Concert was the kind of line up that you could only *dream* of making up, just for fun to see who you could think of pairing up on stage to jam.

Who better to tell the story of Rock and Roll (the show’s concept), than the people who have lived it best, along with a little help from their friends.

The shows, featured Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, U2, Paul Simon, Metallica, Jeff Beck Band, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Friends, Simon and Garfunkel, Jeff Beck, Mick Jagger… Each band, had it’s own dream list of performers to bring up on the big stage. Stevie Wonder, jammed with Smokey Robinson, John Legend, and Sting. At one point, Stevie Wonder busted out a tribute to Michael Jackson and played “The Way You Make Me Feel” … the place went nuts. I was standing in the “stage right, house left” area and looked up and saw actor Michael Douglas, his actress wife Catherine Zeta-Jones, actor and concert co-producer Tom Hanks, and his actress wife Rita Wilson dancing in the aisles. They were really going for it… laughing, singing and had their hands up in the air. When I looked closer, I saw that Yoko Ono, Robbie Robertson, and Dennis Miller were in the same section (though Miller, Robertson and Ono were not partaking in the dancing in the aisle fun)

Another amazing musical moment; Crosby, Stills, and Nash with Bonnie Raitt, James Taylor, B.B. King and Jackson Browne. Hard rockers Metallica provided a heavy metal dream come true when they invited Ozzy Osbourne on stage. One of the more honest, and respectful moments came when lead singer James Hetfield admitted, “We’re not the most jammy kind of band, we’re kind of a tight little unit, we don’t usually let people in”. Hetfield smirked, then smiled, then asked Ozzy to come on out. One of my favorite things to see Ozzy do when he performs is that “frog jump” thing that he does – and he did it repeatedly while singing “Iron Man” and “Paranoid”. What a Rock moment that was. Look at the bottom of this post for Ozzy talking about his daughter’s upcoming wedding, he really sounds like a concerned dad! Metallica also had Ray Davies of The Kinks, and Lou Reed join them on stage. I mean honestly, isn’t this all enough to make your head spin?

So who’s idea was this anyway? Well, the team that put together the 2 day event is also quite impressive. Joel Peresman, the CEO of the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame pulled in the creative might of actor Tom Hanks, his producing partner Gary Goetzman, singer-songwriter Robbie Robertson, and Academy Award winning-screenwriter Cameron Crowe to produce and film the event for HBO.

When Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson came by the press room Thursday- Hanks talked about helping put this show together like a true music fan. He said he is just like the rest of us, “happy to be in the same venue as all these artists.”

As Tom Hanks was wrapping up his time in the press room, someone asked what his favorite song of 2009 is so far, and why… he cracked everyone up when he said “That Ring On It” song… Check out the video below … (he was referring to Beyonce’s hit song, “Single Ladies” (Put A Ring On It”)

The anniversary show will be presented Thanksgiving weekend on HBO — with lots of behind the scene interviews and unscripted moments. As Bonnie Raitt said when asked what it was like to be a part of the show and backstage with so many artists… she said “all I can say is… there’s a LOT happening in the hallways around here”. Indeed.

Can you imagine what it was like to hang out backstage with U2, while Bono was chatting up Bruce Springsteen, Patti Smith, and Fergie before they all went on stage?

Check out the slide show at the bottom of this blog from the second night (photo credit Kenny Kramme), and these select shots from Thursday. I wish you could have been there with me, but with this backstage blog pass, doesn’t it feel a little like you were? Rock on!

It’s sad how predictable this blog has become, eh? What was once a powerful conduit of the lab

It’s sad how predictable this blog has become, eh? What was once a powerful conduit of the labyrinth of forgotten videogame music lore has become just another YouTube middle-man. O! the humanitee! But maybe things will change around here for the better soon. *wink*

Ah, but Synth music! Yes, I seem to be bridging some sort of gap between cheesy-but-endearing, well-crafted catchy movie soundtracks from the 70s-90s and video game music from said same period. I’m sure there’s a scholarly analysis of it to be found in there somewhere, but don’t expect me to find it. Who the heck has that kind of time? What do I look like to you — some sort of trustafarian Portland grad-student in tight jeans and dyed hair, moving to Portland and inviting you to visit so I can string you along for a relationship that will never happen?!? *froth*

(Ahem…)

In the early ’90s, Jerry Bruckheimer and co. made the supremely awful film, Days of Thunder, the target of the later terrible spoof, Talladega Nights. But from all this badness came some fun music from Hans Zimmer, with the help of Jeff Beck. Unfortunately, the two only do a handful of soundtrack score pieces — the majority of the soundtrack being top-40 major label swill. So it goes.

I usually give Hans Zimmer a lot of guff. But he’s better than John Williams (Hollywood composer) realistically. I can jive with some of Hans Zimmer’s stuff, but he’s no traditional western musical-academic master. He’s not exactly a maestro of the modernist compositional school. He’s more like an epic rocker who has a good sense of scoring. Why, this is the difference between a good metal guitarist and Hans Zimmer: Hans Zimmer can score his music on a grand staff.

As I said, this music is a lot of fun. And it is yet more endearing when you realize it’s for a supremely douchey movie starring Tom Cruise, Lizardman, Esq. Really, this music is way too minimalistically epic to accomodate such a profoundly mundane and shitty story. I would almost call this music unintentionally ironic.* This music should accompany some kind of soul-changing mystical endeavor. But coming back from defeat to win a big redneck car race and finally impress all the shallow, macho assholes you surrounded yourself with in the first place? WAIT A MINUTE, THAT’S WHAT I CALL A STORY! (maybe you guys could ghost-write my bio-pic?!)

But check out Jeff Beck on the guitar, baby! Cool stuff, esp. since he’s using that over-the-top ’80s saturated guitar tone, and with tube amp to boot! No joking around here — none of that dialed-in, direct-in crap found in modern movies and videogames. And Beck is a tasteful little puppy, too. He can play some fun notes and uses his Stratocaster whammy bar for good measure and in good stead.

Anyway, just something to brighten up your otherwise mundane day in which you go through an estranged world interacting with a variety of products and establishments that bear none of your craftsmanship or personal imprints whatsoever. No biggie.

“…she was asked again to join Michael Jackson for his upcoming “Dangerous Tour“. In January ‘93, she joined Jackson to partake in Superbowl XXVII’s half time entertainment which aired to one-and-one-half-billion people in 80 nations.
“She completed her second solo record “Jennifer Batten’s Tribal Rage~Momentum,” just before she was again asked to join Michael Jackson for his 2 year world tour supporting his double album “HIStory” in 1997.”

“Love is Blue” was a single released in 1968 prior to Truth album release. The tune was an easy listening hit in the states for Paul Mauriat. ”Greensleeves” is a traditional English folk song found on Truth. HappyParts has been keen on studio performance these days. These two tracks are an awkward, yet shining tangential for captain blues rock.
